I'm in an 11 in the Cloudultra Pro and an 11.5 in the ultra 3's. I have odd sized feet though, where I'm either between an 11 and an 11.5 and can seldom find that perfect fitting shoe (thank you Salomon s/lab Genesis). I was initially in an 11.5 in the Pro's, but was kicking so many rocks and catching my toes I had to go down a half size. I don't find that to be the case in the Cloudultra 3. I feel like the 3's have more volume in the toebox and are more spacious than the Pro's. They also feel more stable than the Pro's as well.
I switched from the lone peaks for probably 6-8 years after a bout of planter fasciitis. Pt recommended On clouds. I have been in the could ultra 2 and 3 with no issues. I also tore my Achilles while on Team Altra but never correlated the two.
Seven weeks in to my first Ultra training block and all has been going well. Heavier runner at 90kg and currently running in On cloudultra 3’s which have been great, but after stepping up effort on some of my longer runs I’ve found a bit of achilles trouble creep in. Not sure if this shoe geometry / foam related or just a case of starting to hit the hills a bit harder for longer. I have stuck to the no more than 10% increase on mileage rule, with every 4th week a deload. Elevation has increased significantly more than that though on a weekly basis. Decided to have a week off running and just hit the bike for a few steady sessions in hopes the achilles troubles passes. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance
Thanks, I should have said that I have been working with a running specific physio to work on my weakness. Been doing a running strength work out 3x per week which includes calf raises but I had concerns that might of been causing too much fatigue with not enough rest before runs. This being compounded with increased running frequency of 5x per week I didn’t know if a change in shoe might be able to give some relief
Thank you for this, I will edit the original post now with the info you suggested. I have been following a Runna plan, which is based on best efforts as an opposed to actual running experience. For background. I have been running around 10 months, but only consistently 4/5 times a week since the start of December. Started a Runna plan 7 weeeks ago for a 50km race at end of May, but was treating that as more of a training event for a 100km event im doing at the start of July. Background is combat sports (10 years) so my cardio is fairly strong - I think this has tripped me up (and the Runna app) at thinking I can do more than I can as my heart rate / pace date is ok for my weight and Inexperience. Injury history is a few knee ligament injuries but nothing thats impacted my running. Saw a running specialist when I first signed up to these races to do a strength and gate analysis, highlightd my glutes and core were strong and mobility good, calf strength was lacking. I do one hilly long a week, sometimes supplemented by a hill related session if I can get to hills earlier in the week. I have a 8 mile/1750ft - 12 mile/2000ft and a 16 mile/3500ft loops I use. This pain was caused by the 12 mile loop but hitting it at more of a race pace (if you can call it that) Basically I think me fitness is good it physical conditioning for running is lacking
My Cloudultra 3 are brilliant, serving me well for comfortable trail runs when I'm not in Norda. Was wondering why CU 1 & 2 hadn't been on my radar!
The fit is very similar to the pro, moderate heel leading to a more narrow midfoot and a wide toe box. There is a nice amount of volume in the toe box as well, so it should accommodate moderately wide feet well. The ride is solid, responsive and stable with the foam being softer than past versions. I’ve enjoyed the 3s for the 30 or so miles I’ve put on them, love the pros though
My first real trail shoe and I wanted something that I could use to attack our muddy, mushy and a touch of rocky terrain trails. Had heard first impressions about that they feeling stiff and not so cushioned, my feeling is the opposite. they feel perfect on muddy trails, responsive, fast and balanced. Almost to soft and unstable sometimes, but might be due to heavy rainfall that has affected the trails. Can’t compare to other trail shoes, but Uses evo Sl and Mach x2 as road shoes and feel that the cloud ultra 3 is the perfect trail companion.
