I have similar situation in my zone and personally find pretty convient the use of mixed terrain shoes in this situation. Currently I use Salomon Ultra flow and they're fine for me
I’m curious to hear what everyone is running in at the moment — which shoes are in your active rotation, what you use them for, how many kilometres they have, and which pair is currently your favourite. Here’s mine: **Trail rotation** * **Hoka Challenger 7 – 517 km** * **Salomon Glide Max TR – 396 km** * **Salomon Ultra Flow – 180 km** * **La Sportiva Prodigio Pro – 57 km** **Road rotation** * **Puma Deviate Nitro 2 – 257 km** * **Mizuno Wave Shadow 4 – 424 km** * **Hoka Bondi 8 – 163 km** * **New Balance Rebel v4 – 136 km** **Current favourites:** * **Trail:** *La Sportiva Prodigio Pro* — insanely fast and capable, basically brings road-shoe speed into the trails. The bounce and responsiveness are on another level. * **Road:** *Puma Deviate Nitro 2* — a super comfortable daily trainer that can still pick up the pace thanks to the carbon plate. Very closely followed by the *NB Rebel v4*, which is ridiculously light and fun for everyday runs. What about you - what’s in your rotation right now, which pair are you enjoying the most, and are you currently considering buying any new shoes?
Hello, here my feedback based on my experiences with trying on these shoes in store: Altamesa: I found it had good cushion except for where my toes were and it felt like they wouldn't soften no matter how many km's I put into them. Speedgoat 6: toe box felt weirdly roomy for a narrowish shoe and they didn't quite fit right. Hierro: I was able to try on the v7, v8 and v9 models all at one store. The v9 we're the best out of the 3 but I still didn't like the v9. It just felt oddly bulky which was a shame as I love NB shoes. The 1080's are my favourite. Stinson 7: I just bought a pair from MEC yesterday and they felt so good on my feet as soon as I put them on. I'm a little used to heavier shoes so that doesn't bother me. I really want a max cushion trail runners that doesn't need to be super technical trail focused. Salomon Ultra Glide/Ultra Flow: i really wanted to like these but they were a little narrow and just didn't have the comfy impact I was expecting. Altra Timp 5: I think these shoes are awesome except for the way the upper material bends at the toe box. It just feels weird and I can tell it will create problems for me a few km's into a run. I also have the Topo Ultraventure 4 which are great but I don't know how well I would enjoy them past 30km. I have Columbia Ecolite (the ones that look like they infused golf balls into the form) which have been great but just aren't on the same level as other trail shoes. I had the Brooks Caldera 6 which were okay and had great traction but they hurt my feet and caused blood blisters on the outside of my big toes so I was able to return them when I got the Stinson. I've tried on many other runners and I have the believe that you should go with the shoe that fells the best on your foot. E: forgot to add that I also tried on the hoka mafate speed 4 and I almost bought them as they were don't in the toe box compared to the speed goats 5 & 6 but I wanted slightly more cushioning. I think the mafate is a great comparison to the topo Ultraventure 4
Salomon ultra-wide, I have them and they are not a total zero-drop. My favourite shoe ever despite the price point
I have used Zamberlain, Solomon Ultras, La Sportiva Prodigios, Arc'teryx Norvan, Topo Ultraventure, Altra Lone Peak, and I am currently using Kailas Fuga EX. Zamberlain - sole delaminated La Sportiva Prodigios - most comfortable yet not durable Solomon Ultras - too hot, heavy, fit was bit sloppy. Decent traction Topo Ultraventure - good toe box but not durable Altra Lone Peak - not for me Kailas Fuga EX - Best Grip, most durable, one of the lightest, took a bit of break-in and is now very comfortable (La Sportiva still is most comfortable), great on mud yet durable on pavement, runs narrow but they have a wide model with plenty of room. https://preview.redd.it/6l8apbqae0gg1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3631376751409ad88a8d3d4b91bc11f1133c8e6 sum of the attributes make it my current favorite I am a westerner living in Asia so availability may matter depending on your location. Most use cases are softer trails or mud with roots. Some pavement. Have used them in Southeast Asia and Nepal.
The downside of trail runners to me (Solomans) was I would sometimes get foot bruises on sharp rocky ground. I switched to hiking shoes (Merrell's) and I feel it's a better compromise between trail runners and boots. Pretty light and more comfortable.
My Solomans had a rock plate (thank you for pointing out my omission), but I feel a big difference with my Murrell Moab's. To each there own, I know trail runners are the favorite, the Moab works better for me (I have dainty feet, I guess).
