"My Topos have lasted forever."
"I’m about 600 miles into a pair of Topos also- Pursuits. ... I’ve had a few pairs of Topos now, run some pretty rocky trails and am always amazed how much life Topos have in them."
"got about 700 miles out of each of my first two pairs (and they probably could have went a bit longer) ... My third pair are still almost as good as new after 300 miles, aside from some tread wear."

"the wide toe box concept was a life altering discovery for me. ... Topo makes durable shoes with wide toe box"
"I have wide feet and they are fantastic. ... roomy toe box."
"I have short but wide feet (I call them my hobbit feet) to the point where a pair of On Clouds once made my feet bleed on an easy 10-mile jog by compressing them so severely, and Topos are the only shoes I'll wear"

"I can’t do zero drop. ... I don’t like the lack of push off ... I’ve had plantar fasciitis in the past which is not suited for zero drop. ... I use Topo and Altra low heal to toe drop but not zero."
"zero drop allows you to adjust your foot quicker to terrain changes so I find it very helpful for technical terrain."
"low drop with a wide toe box ... Altras and Topos have less to zero drop and they don’t have this occur for me."

"They completely changed the way the shoes feel. ... I routinely hike 10 miles in them and feel great."
"The Topos give me the extra padding, more inline with an Altra Timp, but don't squish my mid foot like the Timps do."
"The Ultraventure have a bit more padding ... I am heavier than your average hiker and live in a rocky area."

"much more secure ... locked in midfoot and heel"
"I definitely rolled my ankles more in Speedgoats than I do in my topos or lone peaks. ... Just having a wider base helps a lot for the stability, for me at least"
"topos....stable"

"hate that the highest drop shoe they offer is 5mm. Not everyone is into the low drop trend. ... So basically for me it’s either a shoe that’s not quite wide enough but has a higher drop or a shoe that is wide enough but lower drop."

"Neither make shoes with a drop larger than 5mm ... wish they had an 8mm drop shoe with a rock plate"

"the midfoot was way too narrow ... The worst part was the awful midfoot. ... Some "normal" shoes have a wider midfoot."

"the high arch bothered one of my feet and gave me PF."
"I also got PF from dabbling in topos after being an Altra user for years. ... the arch just doesn't work for me."
"For flat feet, stay away from Topo - they have super high arch support that caused me major issues even with just low arches."

"Topo shoes gave me tendinitis in both Achilles on my first hike. ... They felt perfect in store and then mid hike it became a real issue. ... I honestly should have walked down barefoot because it lead to me not being able to hike for months. ... The backs of their shoes are very stiff."
"they feel a little long to me with heel slip?"
"Tried Topo Pursuits but too much heel rubbing."

"I currently have a 5” long opening on my Topo Pursuits because they ripped open after 185-miles on the GDT. ... My first pair I wore on the AT this year and they also started tearing in <400 miles. ... Very disappointed after the rave reviews. ... Yeah this pair only lasted me from Field to just north of Jasper and I didn’t even do that road walk out of town ... my main issue has been the uppers tearing on me. ... Tearing after 185 miles is on the shoe, not the trail. ... they both tore on two very different trails"
"this was after ~400miles MAX - probably less. Not all of it trail miles. ... The Pursuits 1 lasted me 700+ miles on the CDT and never failed as catastrophically as the Pursuits 2. ... Paying 150$+ for the Topos is hard to swallow if they only last a couple 100 miles…"
"the top of the shoes by the tongue was completely worn through, so that the plastic-y interior material was coming through ... both were split next to the tongue"
Topo Pursuit were my replacement. Curious how the Xero Ridgeway will perform (currently my side s[ho]e)
Topo Athletics are my favorite. Specifically the Pursuit, and I’m excited to try the Traverse sometime, too. I like them far better than Altras as they’re much more secure and durable. A lot of hikers have pivoted from Altra to Topo.
Yes I would, the Pursuits have a pretty wide toe box but locked in midfoot and heel.
2 pairs of the Superior 5, terrible traction when wet on limestone. 1 pair of the Olympus 5, much better traction but the midsole packed out around 200 miles in and that’s probably because of the inner flex thing because there’s less foam there. I’ve got some topo pursuits with 400+ miles that are great and Nnormal tomirs with 400+ miles that’s are also still great. I just don’t think altra makes a great shoe for me, especially because I have a narrow foot and would lose multiple toenails after marathon+ distances.
My Topo Pursuits are wide toe box and minimal cushion which you don't really need on trails like you do on pavement. They are zero drop so if you aren't used to that, take your time adapting. That said, zero drop allows you to adjust your foot quicker to terrain changes so I find it very helpful for technical terrain.
Have you looked at the Topo lineup of shoes? Same wide toe box, same 0mm drop options. I have a bunch of them. Some zero drop, some 3 and 5mm drops. The only thing I don't like about Topos is that I hate ortho-lite insoles so I swap in super feet insoles instead. But that is probably an issue in most trail shoes since they try to go lightweight.
I've had some issues with on my Topos I run in. I think its partially from my feet being narrower low volume. I'm going to try some different lacing to help keep the tension off the toe end of the laces to see if that helps.
So from personal experience, it’s most likely the zero drop. I only hike in zero drops (Topo Pursuits), almost every shoe I own is zero drop, with the exception of my runners. All of them, whether trail or road running are around 5mm drop. I tried to run in both the Pursuits and the Lone Peaks and I get the same issue as you.
Topo just made the mountain racer in a wide size. If they don’t properly refresh the Topo Pursuit then I’ll try those. The Topo Pursuit v1 was the best shoe I’ve ever seen.. The v2 was slightly tighter, a regression with the mesh and had STUPID colors. I really wish manufacturers would not mess with perfection. It’s like the designers have to justify their own existence every year. I hate it. When you nail a design you should stick with it.

I’ll second Topos, extremely durable trail runners. I trail run in Pursuit 2s (zero drop).

I loved the pursuits but the pursuit 2's have an issue with the plastic heel cup wearing through and causing Achilles issues. Hoping the 3's fix the issue. A dude on IG/YT has had them a couple weeks for review, so I hope they become available soon
In the Topo lineup the Pursuit is not the tough burly shoe. It has a very open airy mesh upper. The Terraventure has a tighter tougher mesh.
Yes the Pursuit is zero drop. The Terraventure is a 3 mm drop.
