Topo for life. I switched from LPs in a wide to normal Pursuits (though a half size larger) and will never go back. You lose a tiny bit of responsiveness Ill admit, but the tradeoff is a substantially more durable shoe that performs far better on rocky terrain.

Weird, ive been through 4 pairs of pursuit/pursuit II and have gotten around 900km from each. When I retire them its just because the tread is a bit thin but theyre still runnable.

Topo Athletics are my favorite. Specifically the Pursuit, and I’m excited to try the Traverse sometime, too. I like them far better than Altras as they’re much more secure and durable. A lot of hikers have pivoted from Altra to Topo.

Yes I would, the Pursuits have a pretty wide toe box but locked in midfoot and heel.

My Topo Pursuits are wide toe box and minimal cushion which you don't really need on trails like you do on pavement. They are zero drop so if you aren't used to that, take your time adapting. That said, zero drop allows you to adjust your foot quicker to terrain changes so I find it very helpful for technical terrain.

Have you looked at the Topo lineup of shoes? Same wide toe box, same 0mm drop options. I have a bunch of them. Some zero drop, some 3 and 5mm drops. The only thing I don't like about Topos is that I hate ortho-lite insoles so I swap in super feet insoles instead. But that is probably an issue in most trail shoes since they try to go lightweight.

I've had some issues with on my Topos I run in. I think its partially from my feet being narrower low volume. I'm going to try some different lacing to help keep the tension off the toe end of the laces to see if that helps

Been out for a few years. Very durable, I wear them for off trail routes and scrambling. Slightly more cushion than a lone peak

Altra Lone Peak+ for trail hiking, Topo Pursuits for off trail and scrambling 🤘

So from personal experience, it’s most likely the zero drop. I only hike in zero drops (Topo Pursuits), almost every shoe I own is zero drop, with the exception of my runners. All of them, whether trail or road running are around 5mm drop. I tried to run in both the Pursuits and the Lone Peaks and I get the same issue as you.

Sadly the Timp is too narrow for me. The Topo Pursuit 2 is on the list and I will try it as soon as I get my hands on a pair. I tried several Altras (Timp 6, Olympus 6, Mont Blanc, Olympus 275), but none was a match.

Have you tried Topo? Their soles felt as cushy as concrete to me, with pronounced arch support compared to Altra LP. I can’t recall if the toe box was as wide on the Topo Pursuit, it’s been a while since I tried them.
