I really like the Topo Athletic Trailventure.
I am still a baby trail runner. I have worn through asics Trabuco max 4. I sized up to get the width, but I'm having the issue of when my foot slides forward the laces cut off circulation and my feet go numb. I have gotten my feet scanned, but my issue is most stores don't carry wide or Extra wide sizes and my feet are too small to try on men's shoes in store. The Trabuco Max's don't have extended sizes. I ordered new balance hierros and the toe protection is too firm and rubs my big toes. I've tried topo athetics and I loved the toe box, but the wide were still too narrow in the mid sole. I feel like I'm stuck the nightmare of Cinderella. At this point I think my size is 8 or 8.5 Extra wide. Please help 🙏
The topos I tried were the mtn racer 4, Terra venture 5 and the aura for a road option. Loved the toe space, but were too restricting in the rest of the foot.
Topo Atheltic makes some great shoes. But sizing seems inconsistent between models. I used Altras before, but road shoes from them are way narrower than trail models. I started with MTN Racer 3 for trail and Cyclone 1 for road. Both fit fantastic in 12. I typically size 12 for all shoes/boots. But later on, I got Terraventure 4, Traverse, Trailventure, ST-5, Magnifly 5. Now I'm going to try Ultrafly 5. All the shoes I got in 12 except for Magnifly 5. All trail runners are good length wise but fit drastically different in width throughout shoe(I made a review post about it). Boots are tad snug for 12, but probably too loose in 12.5. Cyclone 1 is good in size 12. St-5 runs 0.5-1 size too small, which sucks since I usually wear midweight/padded socks. Magnifly 5 I got after ST-5 and half sized up because I assumed it rain the same. It would have been too narrow/short in 12, as it feels about as wide/long as my size 12 trail shoes. But the midfoot and heel are not as narrow and snug for my liking, so I have to tighten it a lot. I hope that the Ultrafly 5 is a good fit in 12, Otherwise, the actual material quality is great, and the balanced and responsive labeled foams are great while running, walking, and hiking. The outsoles on any trail shoe with Vibram megagrip are immaculate, with great traction and grip. Running in Cyclone/ST-5/Magnifly 5 is great.
I am about the same size as you and wore the same Salomons for years — bought several pairs in a row. Now I am fully converted to a cushiony trail runner and wear Topos for most hikes, except where there’s likely to be mud, snow, wet or off-trail walking, in which case I reach for my GTX boots. My feet are much cooler and happier in cushioned trail runners. I’m about the same size as you and can carry a similar load in trail runners no problem. In fact, the cushiony soles save me from the metatarsal joint inflammation I sometimes got when carrying a full pack in Salomons. For the best of both worlds, you can also get something that looks more like a boot and has waterproofing with cushiony soles — I have the Topo Trailventure and Salomon Elixir. Both look a little like clown shoes but the ride is so squishy and nice!
Have you tried topo athletic? It sounds like you're describing the terraventure, which I love for the reasons you described
Hi, I sell shoes at a local gear shop close to the PCT. You need to give me more information about your feet, your size and width. Chances are your shoes are too small. I personally hiked with the Topo Terraventure and love them, and I’ve also hiked over 1000 miles on the Ultraventure. Mainly I like their durability compared to Altra and HOKA. But again, it’s whatever shoe works for your foot and you’ve given zero info on that.
I’ve gotten 500+ miles on several Topo models, though I hear Norda 001 last even longer.
Terraventures have better grip and stability. They are less cushy but have a rock plate so it balances out, unless you need the extra cushion.
Topo Terraventures. But I’d avoid the WP version unless you’re running in snow.
In general, not specific to that shoe. As the other commenter said, they fill with water and don’t drain. They also make your feet hot. I only use them in snow since the warmth is a bonus at that point and snow melt will freeze your feet.
Topos have definitely been more durable in my experience, but they do try to split the difference between a true foot shaped toe box and a traditional pointed toe box, and that can be a bit uncomfortable compared to a true foot shaped shoe. I do still find them more comfortable than traditional trail runners though. They also have better tread than altras imo, especially for mud and loose dirt or dusty ground
