Versatile road-to-trail, but struggles on wet, technical downhills.

I really struggled to replace my wide Speedgoat 4s, tried the Topo Ultraventure 2 but found the sole and the responsiveness lacking (other than looking distinctly boring). I ended up back with the Speedgoat 7, in wide, using heel lock lacing and that seems to have resolved most of my issues, but my toes still hammer the toe box on fast descents. I think I'll size up again next time. I also like the New Balance Hierro in wide, but had issues with the toe box after 20km or so. Definitely weird that there's not much choice here.
Thanks for this. I have 14 4E-6E, very wide mid foot, flat arch, nearly unobtanium. I've tried well over a dozen shoes and boots, most all too tight mid foot. Only thing wide enough mid foot so far are Lowa Renegade Wides, Hike Clifton 10 wide walking shoes and New Balance street shoes. Check out [https://runrepeat.com/](https://runrepeat.com/) they tear down and measure trail runners of regular width but I'm hopeful that the widest regular fit are also widest in wide size. In a trail runner, best bet from their list is Topo Ultraventure. It comes in 2E, did you try that or the regular D width?
I am still a baby trail runner. I have worn through asics Trabuco max 4. I sized up to get the width, but I'm having the issue of when my foot slides forward the laces cut off circulation and my feet go numb. I have gotten my feet scanned, but my issue is most stores don't carry wide or Extra wide sizes and my feet are too small to try on men's shoes in store. The Trabuco Max's don't have extended sizes. I ordered new balance hierros and the toe protection is too firm and rubs my big toes. I've tried topo athetics and I loved the toe box, but the wide were still too narrow in the mid sole. I feel like I'm stuck the nightmare of Cinderella. At this point I think my size is 8 or 8.5 Extra wide. Please help 🙏
I love their return policy! I think brooks are going to be the next try. According to the interwebs there are some in-stock at my local fleet feet. I'm thinking I'll try on in store and order from brooks directly so I can test them. I'm able to pinpoint when I typically have issues but it's not until after mile 2.
I tried the ultraventure standard in store and I was hopeful. I was curious how well the tread on them lasted on roads, because they're supposed to be a hybrid. I might order the wide from topo directly. They were great with my recent trials. I also want to look into altra wides. I bought a pair of altras and ended up returning them. They were standard width, so I'll look at altra directly.
Long time for me in Solomon’s and finally left them. I switched to topo ventures wide toe and have done both hiking, and trail running with some tarmac in between. My one regret is I had not found the Topos sooner and switched - highly recommend them
Not sure if this thread meets the UL reqs but I have the same issues with altra being too floppy for my large foot and made the bottom of my foot very sore within a few days on trail. My current favorite shoe is the topo athletic vistas or ventures because they are so comfortable and have the perfect amount of stiffness and plush feeling that I sometimes forget to switch into my flip-flops once I arrive at camp even after 15 mile day which is pretty wild. Also look at La sportiva they make great shoes that are very durable. The hokka speed goat are great and I’ve used 5 pairs now but the shoe tends to go flat and the cushion feeling is gone much faster than other plush cushion shoes I’ve tried.
The la sportive PRODIGIO max are a little wider at the tow box and the energy return is comfort amazing. I got them for trail running and day hiking but end up using them backpacking too. I still use the typos athletics although I think the build quality has taken a hit recently because the heel fabric has a hole with only about 350 miles.
My speedgoat rubbed the same way and never really was that comfortable long term. The shoe fabric tore around the top ankle over the first 300 miles from rubbing exactly as you mentioned around the ankle. I’ve got over 800 miles on that pair with about 500 backpacking and the grips are finally coming off. I advise you to imedialty return them and go buy a pair of Topo athletic shoes - ultra venture or vista if you want max cushion. There other models are super comfortable also.
Road shoes or a road to trail shoe. I rain a similar timed event with similar terrain wearing Topo Ultraventures a couple weeks ago and they were great.
I alternate between Topo's Ultraventure for less technical trails and the Vista for anything more technical or muddy. I like them both, but the Ultraventure with the same outsole as the Vista would be the perfect shoe.
