This is my opinion also! When I tried a pair of VJ's (ultra 2) I could never go back to the peregrine's
How would you compare the VJ Ultra 3 and the Speedgoat 5? I wasn't too impressed with the Speedgoat 6, so the VJ Ultra 3 seems like a better replacement. I have experience with the VJ Ultra 1 and its great grip. For shorter distances I'm happy with the Kjerag and for ultra races with the Tecton X 3, but I'm missing a shoe for long training in the mountains....how long do you estimate the lifespan of the VJ Ultra? Thanks, and I look forward to the review
La Sportiva Prodigio Pro - for faster training in technical terrain and for Ultra races in technical terrain Hoka Tecton X 3 - for long training in less technical terrain and for Ultra races in less technical terrain Nnormal Kjerag - for shorter fast runs in the mountains and for shorter fast races (up to 50 km) where there are not many rocks VJ Ulta - for training in technical terrain in wet conditions Hoka Speedgoat 5 - for catching up in less technical terrain VJ Xante Sarva - winter mountain spike boots
I don't remember if you're the only other person on r/trailrunning besides me who is also a VJ fan. I rarely see people post here about them, which is a shame because it's a good brand. I really like my Ultra 2's. They're not perfect, but they're pretty good. I have the Maxx and they're honestly a bit too thin for the sole unless I'm only doing short distances. Did you ever use the original Maxx?
I think you will be happy with the Ultra 2s. I was also nervous about the stack height... I almost never wear my Maxx now though. I want to try the Ultra 3, but the cost is holding me back for now.
I find it superb on technical routes, I have quite large feet (Uk13/EU48) and used to use the inov8 Roclite for technical trails as it had a rockplate, light feel to it and a precise fit, I feel the Maxx2 gives me all of that. Put simply, I find I run and race with more confidence in this shoe because of its grip, feel and close to ground comfort. If they ever discontinue it, I'll buy a good handful to keep me going. I had always heard about VJ grip but after trying their Spark/Ultra 2 that were too narrow I ruled them out, but thw Maxx2 feels amazing for me atleast. Regarding the below comment, not every shoe is right for everyone and all that.
okay, one brand no one has mentioned - Inov8. The mudclaw and mudtalon are great, althought rubber on the X-Talon Ultra wasnt great for wet obstacles or rocks in my experience. but if you want the best grip on the planet, buy some VJ Ultra / iRock / MAXx shoes. they are epic.
I'd say VJ ultra instead of Lightspeed. The Lightspeed is not for power hiking, it's a carbon plated race shoe.
VJ ultra are the best shoes I've ever worn coming from Mafate.
I have been using the VJ ultra and really like them.
+1 for VJsports. I have a pair with spikes that I keep boxed up to come out on the odd icy / snowy run. When they do come out, they’re great. Would recommend non spiky ones for the mud also, they do some good shoes.
