When we had our first in 2021 we bought a travel system that came with a Britax b-safe gen2. It was a very good seat and overall we liked it, but in hindsight I wish we'd gone with a Graco or Chicco carseat because they're not as heavy as our Britax. Then we probably could have kept using the infant seat a bit longer. We switched him to a convertible at 10mo because his weight + the carseat was getting too heavy for me to life in and out of the car. I definitely recommend an infant seat to start off with, especially if baby is measuring small. Convertible car seats don't always fit newborns well, and preemies/smaller babies are even trickier to get a good fit for.
For car seats, while basically all infant carrier are safe in crash tests because they all have the same basic concept, not all are supportive for newborns and especially tiny and premature babies. They can put babies in a chin to chest position which can restrict my their airways. And some seats have really bulky inserts which fit a newborn well but have an awkward transitional stage where they’ve outgrown the inserts but don’t fit properly in the seats. Some of the more supportive ones are Avionaut Pixel/Cosmo; BeSafe Go Beyond; Britax BabySafe; Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix; Cybex Cloud Z. You can sometimes get these seats in bundles.
We started out with the britax travel set up. Came with a jogger stroller and infant car seat that popped in the stroller. Can be placed in a car with a seat belt and no base if necessary. Its lasted us 4 kids, still looks great. I still use the jogger stroller for my 1 year old. But also I had purchased the britax double stroller since it was all compatible and I had my kids close together. And I have a decent umbrella stroller for tight spaces and easy grab and go. But, the jogger stroller is definitely the most durable, good quality and still glides quiet and smoothly after 7 years.
Highly recommend Britax One4life. They also make a slim version. Was in a head on crash when someone crossed the median on a highway and hit us head on. We’re so lucky we survived and my daughter who was 14months at the time had no injuries. I only use Britax car seats now.. expecting my third and got a Britax infant seat.
Love Britax! We did the infant seats (they fit our strollers) & then switched to the All4One (which I think is being phased out for a different one.) So easy to use - installation, adjustments, day to day use, genuinely dummy proof.
