DisastrousFlower 1.0i’m 5yr into the carseat game. the UB mesa was awesome/easy and we’re on our second graco (slimfit and now the big kid one). it’s under $200 and very safe. kept my kid RF until after age 5!
thehelsabot 1.0Gate checking is the happy medium. It’s going to be hard to find a seat that they’ll allow in an overhead and even if they do there’s a good chance there will not be enough room and they’ll have you check it anyway. For my older kid we have a [very light weight booster](https://www.target.com/p/graco-turbobooster-2-0-highback-booster-declan/-/A-86874077)for travel that’s unrelated to our regular car seat. It’s cheap and easy to install so if it does get damaged after a trip I’m not too concerned. I wouldn’t rent a car seat because they don’t really have a good selection and don’t always have what you request available. The upkeep of the car seat is also in question at the car rental places.
