[here's a great video what happens in turbulences. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxG0PXJBe18) From around 1:20 you can see a crash test with a lap child with the dangerous loop belt and a child in a car seat. That video is around 15-20 years old. We've always known that kids aren't safe in planes but profit before lives. A kid in the seat means less money for the airline. So even though they were on a good way of inventing safe solutions for children in the 90s flying got so cheap that it's not feasible for them. In Europe there's currently not a single seat for kids more than 1 year old that has a flight approval on the market. The inflatable and very secure Nachfolger hy5 is working to get flight approved with the new regulation that has been active since September 2024 in Europe. Most baby seats have flight approval. But it's also a hassle to book a seat for a child under the a year old. And lots of companies don't even have this option. And then try tell you to put the child on the lap for "safety reasons" under takeoff and landing and turbulences (which is bs) anyways or you have to fight a flight attentend to being able to install the approved seat in the seat you bought because the flight attendant has never seen a car seat on the plane... And people that say "we check the seat" - that seat is most likely trash after riding the luggage belt carousel. It has been thrown around and kicked and been dropped. The airshell bag is heavily padded, same goes for stokke prampack bag but a normal bag or nothing can't protect the seat. The cares belt is a great alternative for kids from 1-7 years old. We've had this, had never had problems and had a car seat at our destination (because we usually only flew to visit family). But as long as we still have to debate that rearfacing is safer, that kids need a car seat and that 3 year Olds can't ride a booster safely, that we need additional testing instead of only approval testing (Europe has shown that even approved seats can be lethal and dangerous), that kids (or every passenger) shouldn't be in a seat with a thick jacket, we're far away from discussing car seats on a plane...
r/Parenting • Do most parents not bring car seats on planes? ->It's because there has been almost no car seats safe for cars with a flight approval in Europe for kids more than a year old. The Nachfolger hy5 is working on a flight approval for the new r129 regulation (44/04 can still be sold in the UK though). Most baby seats have a flight approval. But car seat safety is not in focus in the first place. Too many parents turn their kids forward facing too soon and too many crappy or dangerous (mostly cheap) seats get the approval and are sold. So when car seat safety is taken more seriously and European law makers stop laughing at the Swedes that say rearfacing is safest and car manufacturers stop making slopes for back seats and stop making storage under the feet in the backseat, which is a death sentence for safe car seats with a load leg), then we can talk flight safety.
