I'll add my 2p to this.. I recently went OLED (Dell Alienware AW3225QF) and have returned it due to eye strain, headaches and green/purple fringing on text. Im about 80/20 productivity gaming and instantly knew it was OLED due to it 'feeling' different in a bad way. I noticed when looking at it from screen to where my head is \~60cm. It was most evident on block white text on black background. I'm back on my Acer X34 original (100Hz) but am uprgading to a second hand LG 34GP950G. The 4k, 240hz was fantastic in gaming, but even in games I noticed the text and it gave me eye strain. The extra hz/fps was however fantastic. Moving to another higher refresh rate IPS seems like a better option for me as must be sensitive to QD OLED. I might look at mini / micro led in the future.
r/ultrawidemasterrace • Ips ultrawide 34" for 2025 ? ->Ultrawide slaps. I've still got my 2017 Acer Predator X34 (3440x1440 100Hz IPS) and it's lovely. Feels like you're playing a movie
r/pcmasterrace • Gaming in 16:9 or 21:9, what’s your thoughts ? ->I have 2, 21:9 monitors. An old Acer Preditor X34 which is an IPS 100hz and a new Samsung Odessey G8 OLED which is 175hz. The Samsung is the same panel as the Alienware that everyone recommends as the best monitor, but also doubles as a smart TV effectively. (I don't use any of the TV functions, but they're there if people want them) Personally I've found majority of the games I play support the 21:9 display no issue, Skyrim requires modding, but newer titles all natively accept the resolution. Some games, FFXIV, Minecraft etc I've had to adjust HUD sizes and stuff to make it more ledgible and manageable, but that's just in game settings, I haven't used a 4k monitor, but I have used a 4k TV as a monitor and it requires the same adjustments. Titles out in the past year such as Palworld or Black Myth Wukong, you can just open and play, full support and correct scaling straight on opening. All in all I ld recommend the resolution, it's great for gaming, and it's wide enough that doing a 50:50 left right split allows 2 very usable windows so makes it great for productivity / Web browsing etc
r/ultrawidemasterrace • I wanna try 21:9, convice me please. ->Used an Acer Predator Z35P for about 3yrs; 34" 21:9. Fast lost it's novelty as an upgrade from 4k 16:9s. Got the Samsung G95SC, had for 1yr so far; 49" 32:9. Major upgrade, love the image quality and responsiveness, issues I have include not enough height, annoyance at not enough curve (edges feel miles away) and those damn finger marks (from the kids, honest). My use case is as a software dev, gamer, and light design work. I run 2 27" 2k monitors at the sides in portrait, pretty much facing each other and provide that immersion when working, they're redundant when gaming. Games I love it for; WZ, LoU, CP2077, WoW, DaysGone, Civ6.
r/ultrawidemasterrace • What is the best 32:9 monitor now also compare 21:9 which one you would chose and why? ->I had a 34 inch (acer x34) ultrawide for a few years and always thought it was too small. When the first 38 inch (Acer x38) ultrawides released I got one. It was a significant upgrade. This is the sweet spot for a 21:9 screen. It practically fully covers my field of view without losing detail from it being too big. I've been waiting for 5 years for something worthwhile to upgrade to and I don't see it coming. 45 inches is just too much. I also don't like the aggressive curves on them.
r/ultrawidemasterrace • Which size to chose for 21:9 monitor? 45" vs 39" vs 34" ->So far for me the sweet spot was 34'' 3440x1440 with my acer predator UW. But I am happy to be proven wrong if I get to try the 5k2k 45''.
r/ultrawidemasterrace • [Real-User Invite] LG UltraGear 5K2K GX9: The Ultimate Sweet Spot of UltraWide OLED Gaming Monitor ->I've never had an issue with text legibility on an ultra wide, I've used both an Acer Predator X34 and a cheap and cheerful Kogan 34" 3440x1440 UW without problems after the Predator blew up. Currently rocking a Dell U3818DW 38" at 3840x1600 and it's crystal clear.
r/mac • An ultrawide curved monitor suitable for a Mac – does this exist at all? ->I know you said 49, but the 57” neo g9 is the move. I have a x34 predator, a 49” G9, as well as the 57” G9. I wfh as a SSE and I sit in front of my 57” all day. Productivity is insane on that thing and it’s a beauty to look at.
r/ultrawidemasterrace • trying to decide on 49" monitor for productivity, light gaming, movie watching ->You’re not bothered by the fringing? I can’t decide if I’m waiting for the 39”, or just go with the 45” now. I’m in your situation now. My OG x34 predator is going to the wife. Do you have a 4090/5090 for it?
r/ultrawidemasterrace • Which size to chose for 21:9 monitor? 45" vs 39" vs 34" ->I went for 34" (3440x1440) pretty early in ultra wide history. My Acer Predator X34 is 7 years now. I will replace it soon (because it's only 100Hz overclocked), but I will definitely go 21:9 again. that format is so immersive, I love it. For the games you play, you could go 4K for a prettier picture, but ultra wide is more immersive, and you will get a lot more frames on 3440x1440 compared to 4K. Are you used to more than 60Hz?
r/OLED_Gaming • Gaming on 34" 1440p ultrawide or 4k 32"? ->Been gaming in 21:9 since the Predator x34 came out. Can’t imagine gaming in 16:9 ever again.
r/pcmasterrace • Gaming in 16:9 or 21:9, what’s your thoughts ? ->I play daily on a 34" 3440x1440p monitor. It's been supported since 2015 lol
r/leagueoflegends • 34 inch ultrawide monitor ->I actually haven't played arena. I did get to Diamond 5 back in the day (Season 7 or 8?), so you can still climb. I've even gotten to LE in CS:GO playing on ultrawide, and my ultrawide is one of the first ones to come out back in 2015, so it only goes to 100hz. It's definitely worth the trade-offs imo. The immersion is amazing. Played the BF6 beta, and it was awesome. I'll eventually upgrade to an OLED ultrawide, but this X34 is still trucking along, so I'm going to continue to use it until it dies, lol
r/leagueoflegends • 34 inch ultrawide monitor ->I love my 34" 3440x1440p monitor. It'll be 10 years old this December (original Predator X34 from 2015). I want to try a 4k display, but I just love my ultrawide.
r/pcmasterrace • [16:9 vs 21:9] Those who have both, which one do you prefer personally? Am I wrong to conclude after month of research that ultrawide is slightly overhyped? ->I can’t go back from 49’. I bought a MacBook to work when I’m away from my desk but could not gel with the small workspace and so much scrolling…. I started with 34 on the path of Ultrawide with the predator x34 and the all the Samsung odyssey monitors. I look forward to LG’s 5k2k monitor.
r/ultrawidemasterrace • Is 34" ultrawide.. dying? ->It was the acer predator x34
r/Monitors • Curved monitors have to stop ->I’ve been rocking an Acer Predator 34” for a while now, and honestly, it’s been great—but I think it’s time for an upgrade. The sweet spot for an ultrawide, in my opinion, is still 34” at 3440x1440. It’s the perfect middle ground for immersion and performance. Can’t wait to switch from 120Hz to 330Hz—now that’s a serious jump!
r/ultrawidemasterrace • [Real-User Invite] LG UltraGear 5K2K GX9: The Ultimate Sweet Spot of UltraWide OLED Gaming Monitor ->What a great opportunity. Thank you, LG, for reaching out to the community and for giving us a chance to try out this beast. To begin with, I have been a fan of ultrawide monitors since some of the first flat panels to hit the market - I owned an Acer Predator X34 for about 7 years, for which time it served me very well. About only a year ago I purchased Samsung’s 34" Odyssey OLED G8 (which has the same panel as the Alienware’s widely popular AW3423DW/ AW3423DWF monitors) and it has been my main monitor since then. On the TV side, I also own several OLED TVs (my first one was a LG 65” C6, which still serves me to this day - the last OLED 3D TV generation by LG and the only generation to be OLED 4K while supporting 3D and Dolby Vision). I also have a LG 77” C1, which has insane picture quality (I’m sure the newer ones are even better), though I still miss the 3D features since I still own a rather large 3D movies library. I researched extensively OLED TVs before I got my first one, so I knew their pros and cons very well - and despite loving the infinite contrast and the pure blacks in movies and games, I was very much afraid to get an OLED panel for a PC monitor as there are just so many static images, like the bars on browsers and other applications, the HUDs in games and so on. Since I got Samsung’s G8 monitor, I have changed a lot the way I handle monitors - I have my screensaver set to start after 1 minute of inactivity and be pure black, my wallpapers also change every 1 minute, I have hidden my Windows desktop icons and made my task bar hide automatically as well. This, so far, is working well and I love that panel, although the weird quirks this particular monitor version has, especially with the DisplayPort, can be very frustrating at times. Even after many firmware updates, it still does not recognize, for example, the BIOS screen on startup, which was extremely frustrating when troubleshooting PC issues. I am not a professional reviewer; I’m a tech geek without an endless budget, so I usually research purchases based on a lot of reviews, both written and from YouTube before I get anything, and I usually try to get the best thing for a good price and don’t upgrade too often - I get a new GPU every 2-3 years, a full new PC every 5-6 years, a new monitor every 6-7 years, and so on. This is actually the only reason I am not actively looking to purchase LG’s new 45” 5K2K GX9 monitor, which I love so much on paper - it is finally a meaningful upgrade for the Ultrawide 21:9 community with a larger resolution and display size to stay in **that sweet spot** in terms of PPI while providing a larger screen size and more pixels compared to the heaps of 3440x1440 34” monitors, while having an OLED panel with more Hz than my eyes could (probably) ever notice, but as I got my current monitor just a year ago, splashing out on a new one so soon is not something I usually do. I am reading and watching a lot of reviews though, to make up my mind on whether to have it on my bucket list for the next few years. In addition, I have a Z790 PC with EVGA 3080Ti FTW3 GPU and I am in the process of picking up a new GPU for my build, I also own an old-ish MacBook Pro, an Apple TV 4K, a PlayStation 5 and a lot of games for console and PC - [my Steam library is over 4400 games](https://steamcommunity.com/id/mm3n/), though I wish I had more time for gaming as I am working full time from home as a Software Quality Assurance specialist, and I am also studying for an Undergraduate Advanced Diploma in IT Systems Analysis and Design at the University of Oxford. Movies are my passion, and my love for them made me stick to the 21:9 Ultrawide format that my Acer X34 had, instead of get a wider screen option at 32:9 AR like Samsung’s G9, because it would only be useful for productivity and gaming and would be moot for movies. Many games don’t support that aspect ratio out of the box, and productivity for an OLED monitor is not the main purpose to drive me into getting it – if I was spending the majority of my day on that monitor for work, I’d rather it wasn’t OLED as it would significantly shorten its lifespan for the gorgeous picture those panels otherwise have. On the other hand, movies in 2.39:1 format look like they are made to be watched on a monitor in this aspect ratio, and games are still widely immersive – pun intended. I’d be very interested to test out how 4K movies look on the new LG 5K2K monitor, which sports a higher resolution than the 4K discs specs, and also see how many frames I could squeeze on some popular games out of my current 3080 Ti GPU, though I realize for a proper gaming experience on over 11 million pixels, I’d probably have to upgrade to a 5080 or 5090 to run everything well. Last but not least, I love taking photos and I own a decent, albeit old Canon 7D Mark II along with an iPhone 15 Pro and tripods, so I can take some good pictures of the monitor if I am lucky enough to be able to try it out. :)
r/ultrawidemasterrace • [Real-User Invite] LG UltraGear 5K2K GX9: The Ultimate Sweet Spot of UltraWide OLED Gaming Monitor ->This screen needs to be bendable, as is that is quite too curved - agree with the article. Too bad I dont game enough to justify the upgrade from my original edition Acer x34, otherwise this would be an absolute massive upgrade
r/hardware • [Tim from Hardware Unboxed/TechSpot] LG 45GX950A Review: The Ultimate OLED Ultrawide? ->I’d like to share some information about my new favorite monitor in case there is someone who will benefit from my experience. # Background I’m a professional Mac & iOS software engineer, amateur video editor, and avid PC gamer. I spend 70% of my time on my MacBook Pro using Xcode, productivity tools, and Final Cut. The remaining 30% of my time is spent gaming on the PC. I prefer games like Tomb Raider, The Talos Principle, Half-Life 2, Defense Grid, Portal, Stray, Command & Conquer, Battlefield, Deliver Us the Moon, and Kingdom Rush. In other words, I play 1st-person adventure, 3rd-person adventure, RTS, tower defense, and FPS games. # Monitor Priorities These have always been my top priorities for picking a monitor: * Ultrawide * As big as possible * The highest pixel density possible (PPI) * Good for coding, productivity, and video editing on the Mac * Good for non-competitive gaming on the PC * Frame rates above 100, preferably around 120 or more * Very clear text * G-SYNC compatible * No burn-in issues (unless the monitor is so amazing that it's worth it) # Acer Predator X34 I started with the Acer Predator X34 in 2015. This was a great monitor for the time! It was a 34-inch IPS display with a resolution of 3440 x 1440. It had a fast pixel response time of 4ms (fast for 2015), and it refreshed at 100 Hz. I loved that monitor for PC gaming, and the text was super crisp for coding and productivity. However, I wanted more vertical space for coding. # LG 38GL950G Later on, I upgraded to the LG 38GL950G. This was a 38” monitor. It had a resolution of 3840 x 1600. It was basically like my previous X34, except it was larger, had more space for productivity apps, supported HDR for gaming, and had a faster refresh rate (144 Hz) for gaming. It was better than my old monitor in every way (both for gaming and productivity). # LG 40WP95C Then in 2023, I got the LG 40WP95C for productivity use only, and kept the LG 38GL950G for gaming. This was a great combination. The older LG 38GL950G was great for gaming because of its large size, fast refresh rate, fast pixel response, and HDR. Meanwhile, the newer LG 40WP95C was perfect for productivity. It had a large 40-inch display, and it was a 5K2K monitor. This means it had a resolution of 5120 x 2160. It was essentially a 4K display that had extra space on the sides to make it an ultrawide. It was perfect for coding and productivity, and it had a much higher pixel density than all of my previous displays. Text was nice and crisp! Unfortunately, the 40WP95C wasn’t good for gaming at all. Its max refresh rate was 72 Hz. It was just a productivity monitor. That’s why I kept the 38GL950G for gaming. # LG 45GX950A Ever since I got the LG 40WP95C, I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for a 5K2K gaming monitor that would double as a productivity monitor. It was a long wait, but LG finally announced the 45GX950A at CES last year. Whoa! It looked amazing! It was a 45-inch monitor with 5K2K resolution! The 45-inch size sounded amazing, and it had the high pixel density that I was hoping for. It had a high refresh rate for gaming, and it was an OLED, so I knew the colors and brightness would blow me away. I was starting to wonder if this would be my ultimate monitor! Well, I bought one, used it for a few days, and… I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it’s too big! I always wondered if I would reach a size limit where a monitor felt uncomfortably large, and this monitor definitely did. Here are my thoughts after using this monitor for several days… First, here are the pros: * Gaming is super-immersive and engaging. * It almost makes games feel 3D, and it takes up most of your field of view. * It’s similar to wearing a high-resolution VR headset. * It makes games intense, beautiful, and brilliant! * This was my first OLED display, and damn…it’s impressive compared to IPS displays for gaming. Here are the cons: * It’s way too much immersion for productivity use. * It requires much side-to-side head movement to see everything. * It requires much up-and-down head movement to see everything. * I don’t feel comfortable when it’s 24” from my face (my typical viewing distance). I wanted to move it at least 30” from my face for productivity apps. * It has an aggressive curve, so straight lines appear very curved. * Using it for a few hours made my eyes feel tired, and even gave me a hint of motion sickness. There was another problem with this monitor on the Mac: Text was too small when using the native resolution of 5120 x 2160. I ended up changing the Mac to a lower resolution of 3840 x 1620. That made the text large and very sharp, which was great. However, it meant this monitor had the same usable space as my old LG 38GL950G. Hmm…so I had the urge to push this monitor further away from me, and it had the same usable space as my 38” display. What did that mean? The monitor was too big for me! I thought about it for a few days, spent a lot of time comparing it to my other monitors, and eventually returned it. I was sad to do so, because I loved it for gaming. However, it just wasn’t comfortable when using productivity apps. # Dell U4025QW Now that I ruled out the LG 45GX950A, what was left as a possible upgrade? The Dell U4025QW looked very appealing. It’s a 40-inch 5K2K display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, supports G-SYNC, has HDR, and it’s an IPS display. This monitor sounded perfect for my needs of mixing productivity with gaming. I also knew from experience that I would like the 40-inch size. Well, I just bought it a few days ago, and I’m loving it! This is the ultimate ultrawide monitor for a mix of productivity and gaming! Here is what I like about it: * 40” is the perfect size. I wouldn’t want anything larger. * It has a very subtle curve. It’s almost flat. * I can see all 4 corners with minimal head turning. * It has a 5K2K resolution. * On the Mac I use a scaled resolution of 3840 x 1620. It’s the same usable space as my 38”, but everything is much sharper. * This is the best PC gaming experience I’ve ever had on an IPS display. It’s much better than the 38”. * The built-in KVM switch is lovely. I have my MacBook Pro and gaming PC connected. It switches seamlessly between them. It handles switching for the video input, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and headphones. With all that connected, I still have 3 available USB ports. * There is no power brick. * Color uniformity is great. There are only a couple of cons: * This monitor is no match for the super vibrant and immersive gaming of the LG 45GX950A. I’ll miss that intense gaming experience. * All 5K2K monitors require a beefy video card. Gaming performance is good if you're running a 5090. In short, if you need a large, high-resolution, high-quality, ultrawide monitor that is good for productivity and gaming, the Dell U4025QW sits right in the sweet spot. I would highly recommend it. The LG 45GX950A is great, but only for gaming. **Regarding pixel response time**: I saw many comments and reviews online that slammed the Dell U4025QW for having a slow pixel response time. That was my biggest concern when purchasing the monitor. However, I don’t notice it at all. I suppose it’s because I play non-competitive 1st-person adventure, 3rd-person adventure, RTS, tower defense, and FPS games. I frequently have the quality maxed out, and even have some motion blur enabled. Pixel response times don’t seem to be an issue with those settings. # What's Next? Now I want something just like the Dell U4025QW, but as an OLED (or maybe a MicroLED one day)! That would be a powerful combination!
r/ultrawidemasterrace • The perfect ultrawide for productivity and gaming! ->I'd love to try a 38 but I'm still rocking my original Acer predator x34 from years ago. IPS 100hz. I've tried 32:9 ultrawides for testing and we have them at work but at home it's just too much screen for me. I have an LG C1 48" next to me that I got new for $600 a while back and I already have 2800 hours and no burn in. So content viewing and certain games on the 48, and everything else on the ultrawide. I'm actually looking for 34 alienwares or the new MSI only because I'm gunning for a 5080 and I feel I need a better monitor since mine is nearly ten years old.
r/ultrawidemasterrace • Is 34" ultrawide.. dying? ->I use Predator X35 which is VA, but I also have X34, I think X35 is way better than X34.
r/ultrawidemasterrace • Do IPS Ultrawide still exist? ->Obviously the sweet spot is 45 inches at 5k2k *wink* I think the sweet spot is probably this resolution at on a 40 inch panel, with a higher refresh rate, but that doesn't exist yet. I bought one of the OGs of these gaming screens back in 2016 (acer predator x34) and have only used this aspect ratio since. Actually I still use that monitor today for work still. Excited to see the panels step up in resolution finally.
