Dell U4924DW uses Dell Display Manager software for easy switching and has to be installed on both machines. It’s only 60 Hz so not really for gaming. I use its sister model Dell U4025QW which is 120 Hz, more vertical height but smaller. Switching is good via keyboard.
The Dell U4924DW is a good monitor productivity. I only exchanged it for the Dell U4025QW because I wanted more vertical height. Personal taste.
I have the U4924DW, I tried a G9 and an OLED, for productivity the Dell U4924DW is a hands down superior winner. LG used to have a 165Hz IPS panel 49”, but that’s discontinued. Regarding the Dell, KVM works great. 60Hz is OK, but the screen still looks great for gaming. The curve is pretty shallow, I much prefer 1800r for a screen this size, but the clarity from the IPS panel is amazingly superior. I searched for about a month and the market is now dominated by OLED and VA. This Dell may be the last IPS panel to be offered in 49” configuration.
I tried OLED for work, it sucked for text rendering. I caved and got Dell IPS Dark 49”.
I also threw in the towel for OLED and productivity. Mini-LED was nice, but still a VA panel. Dell 49” IPS is the only mainstream 32:9 right now. I love it, amazing text clarity and image reproduction. The IPS panel is almost as amazing for colors as a good OLED, but with perfect text and image reproduction. Only two downsides are shallow curve (I would prefer 1800r) and 60Hz. But the response rate is great enough that I don’t mind the crisp 60Hz since it’s productivity first, gaming second. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-ultrasharp-49-curved-usb-c-hub-monitor-u4924dw/apd/210-bgtz/monitors-monitor-accessories
Dell 49” IPS. Perfectly replaces 2x27” and is the best for productivity. Gorgeous IPS Black display, perfect text and photo rendering. It’s what I have after I tried OLED and Samsung. Great productivity monitor. Only downsides are I wish it had a stronger curve (has 3800r and I prefer 1800r) and it tops out at 60Hz. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-ultrasharp-49-curved-usb-c-hub-monitor-u4924dw/apd/210-bgtz/monitors-monitor-accessories
I really like the dell’s text quality, but it is a 1440p display. I compared it to other 1440p OLED and VA panels and it was superior to them.
If you’re on the fence remember you can return to Dell if you don’t like it. Under their “Consumer use policy” they cover return shipping and do not charge a restocking fee. In the US Dell is currently the only available IPS 49” monitor, I wish the 165Hz LG was still available. My only gripe with the Dell is the curve is not aggressive, and the 60Hz refresh is a bit slow. Every other monitor I’ve tried had very noticeable text fringing, but it’ll be up to you what’s tolerable. These were my in-home, extended trials. The Asus I’ve owned for a couple years. https://a.co/d/fMk2S6P https://a.co/d/5f0rORu https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/alienware-34-240hz-qd-oled-gaming-monitor-aw3425dw/apd/210-brrk/monitors-monitor-accessories I also have an LG C9 55” OLED and B3 OLED 65”, but since I sit 10’ from those screens the text fringing is only noticeable at close range.
Yes. For creativity work, in North America and 49”, the Dell IPS panel is the best. LG used to make a nice one with higher refresh rate, but not currently available. Image quality on the Dell IPS 49” is way better than the Samsung VA panel, though it is pricey.
Yeah. It’s really sweet for productivity and design, and the PiP and KVM work great. Only downside is sides is I wish it had a more aggressive curve and was faster than 60Hz refresh. But apparently we can’t have everything with an IPS panel this size since OLED is taking over the market. Side note, I had an OLED first and returned it due to horrible text fringing. Games looked great, but text and pictures suffered.
I just returned my Alienware OLED 21:9 due to fuzzy text fringing making work terrible. I’m replacing it with the Dell IPS 49” monitor and it will arrive within the week. I also tried the Samsung Neo G9 49” and the text was better on the Samsung VA panel than thebOLED by a long shot. My other monitor is an Asus IPS which is superior for text clarity, hence why I switched to the Dell 49” IPS. As far as I can tell the Dell 49” IPS is one of the only remaining IPS panels in the 49” format, with the ones from LG no longer available in my area.
I just got rid of my OLED widescreen that was 109ppi. If you go OLED make sure you go 140ppi or higher with a 4k2k monitor. I went with the Dell 49” IPS display. It 100% kicks butt on productivity compared to the Samsung VA panel. Text is crystal clear. Text fringing on OLED was not tolerable for me.
For productivity, the Dell with IPS display is one of the only IPS 49” monitors still in production. Only downsides are 60Hz refresh rate and very shallow 3800r curve. Everything else in NA is VA (OK for productivity) or OLED.
I just got the Dell 49” IPS and it is beautiful for productivity, text, and images. I had to return an Alienware OLED and a Samsung G9 Mini-LED VA panel because the text fringing was pretty bad even on the Samsung. I’ve never used a 5k2k, but apparently the higher ppi mitigates but doesn’t eliminated the OLED text fringing. If your productivity I’d stick with an IPS panel,
My use case is similar to yours, I went with the Dell U4924DW and I’m fairly happy with it. I have my laptop, gaming pc (and C64) connected to it, and switch between them with kvm. But the curve is definitely not as strong as you would want. Also the 60 Hz refresh rate is a bit meh.
Similar boat, needed one mostly for work (sw dev), and for some casual gaming. I went with the Dell U4924DW, just arrived a week ago. I agree that it is not curved enough, but other than that I really like it. No complaints about image quality, and most importantly I don’t need to babysit it like an oled. Love the usb hub and the kvm, I have my work laptop, my gaming pc and my C64 all plugged in, and can switch between them easily. Love the little pop down usb hub in the front as well, very handy when you need to plug in some random crap. Probably my only complaint is that the audio out is for speakers only (line out), there's no headphone jack, so I have to plug my headphone in and out all the time when switching inputs.
I really want it and I'm considering pulling the trigger, but I find it interesting our different thought processes. For me, it just needs to look really good/sharp and I don't really care if it's 6k technically or not. It makes me wonder if you're wanting super crisp gaming, video editing, or dual use for home theater or something? For myself, I want it purely for productivity when writing code and building systems. I currently have a dell super ultrawide (49") and a dell ultrawide in a vertical stack and I'd rather one giant screen. I can use FancyZones or something to place everything I'm working on and there'll be more screen real estate closer together without having to look up so much because of the way the screens are mounted/gapped. I also like the hub too. It seems like I can get more done in a better workspace. I just noticed your edit where you don't want to game and it's for productivity. My 49" monitor is good, but I wouldn't say better than a product like this because I need more space and it's not easy to add any more space except above it. It also means my windows aren't as tall as I'd like them in some use cases.
I went from a Dell 34" UW to a Dell 49" UW and honestly the 49" is too wide for productivity. Now admittedly the curve on the Dell is not as aggressive as some of the Samsungs, but the edges of the screen are out of my field of view and require too much rotation of my neck to be useful to me. When I bought the monitor, I thought I was going to make greater use of the picture-by-picture feature to run a customer laptop and my work laptop at the same time but turns out that was not a scenario I really needed (most of my customer's would rather give me a VDI than send me a laptop). I like it for gaming, but I am considering moving to a 38 or 40" 21:9 monitor after tax season.
Same. 49" Dell and it's not very curvy so the far left and right don't get used as much since it's hard to read stuff that far away. It's good gaming on though.
I have both rigs. 2x32” 4k displays that I 100% enjoy and a 49” dell ultra wide that is very uncomfortable for me. Too much back and forth neck movement. I bought the ultra wide first and had to change. Now it gets little attention
Yeah, I just looked up the Dell IPS 49". Price is around $1400. The color accuracy, built-in KVM, and USB-C hub seem great for visual work. I'm guessing the Picture-by-Picture mode helps when switching between devices?
I have a 49" Dell and if I'm honest, I spend 99.9% of my time using the 27" LG Dual Up monitor that's off to the side of it. The 49" is too squat, short. I just bought a 40" curved Dell and the Samsung 57" (that's basically two 49's stacked on top of each other without the bezel.) I'll try them both on the desk for a few days then send the one I don't like back. I'm learning towards the 57 because I love the width, it was just the height of the 49 that I couldn't live with.
I love my AVP, and with the included strap that goes over the top of your head it makes it much more comfortable for those long sessions when you’re using your AVP as your monitor. I have 2 49” dell ultra wides stacked vertically for my office setup, and I use my AVP at home to get my close to that same feeling. Ultra wide screen support with your Mac is just fabulous! It’s worth the money. And If you’re a dev, you’ll get more use for your money out of an AVP vs a single function monitor. Just IMO from a day one AVP user and someone who was just thinking about buying an ultra wide for my flight sim setup I just built. Then I remembered I have my AVP and now I’m flying in VR which is wayyyy better than the monitor I would have bought.
