Go for Dell u4923 or LG 49wq95. Both are IPS. VA is trash for doing any work on that screen. The other posters here are clueless. Oled is also fit only for gaming.

My use case is similar to yours, I went with the Dell U4924DW and I’m fairly happy with it. I have my laptop, gaming pc (and C64) connected to it, and switch between them with kvm. But the curve is definitely not as strong as you would want. Also the 60 Hz refresh rate is a bit meh.

Similar boat, needed one mostly for work (sw dev), and for some casual gaming. I went with the Dell U4924DW, just arrived a week ago. I agree that it is not curved enough, but other than that I really like it. No complaints about image quality, and most importantly I don’t need to babysit it like an oled. Love the usb hub and the kvm, I have my work laptop, my gaming pc and my C64 all plugged in, and can switch between them easily. Love the little pop down usb hub in the front as well, very handy when you need to plug in some random crap. Probably my only complaint is that the audio out is for speakers only (line out), there's no headphone jack, so I have to plug my headphone in and out all the time when switching inputs.

I went from a Dell 34" UW to a Dell 49" UW and honestly the 49" is too wide for productivity. Now admittedly the curve on the Dell is not as aggressive as some of the Samsungs, but the edges of the screen are out of my field of view and require too much rotation of my neck to be useful to me. When I bought the monitor, I thought I was going to make greater use of the picture-by-picture feature to run a customer laptop and my work laptop at the same time but turns out that was not a scenario I really needed (most of my customer's would rather give me a VDI than send me a laptop). I like it for gaming, but I am considering moving to a 38 or 40" 21:9 monitor after tax season.

M2 Mac mini pro with 49" Dell gaming monitor (way cheaper than two massively overpriced Apple monitors) is the best setup I've ever had. You will need menuwhere, though. https://manytricks.com/menuwhere/

Yeah, I just looked up the Dell IPS 49". Price is around $1400. The color accuracy, built-in KVM, and USB-C hub seem great for visual work. I'm guessing the Picture-by-Picture mode helps when switching between devices?

I have a 49" Dell and if I'm honest, I spend 99.9% of my time using the 27" LG Dual Up monitor that's off to the side of it. The 49" is too squat, short. I just bought a 40" curved Dell and the Samsung 57" (that's basically two 49's stacked on top of each other without the bezel.) I'll try them both on the desk for a few days then send the one I don't like back. I'm learning towards the 57 because I love the width, it was just the height of the 49 that I couldn't live with.

Hi, I don't know if this will help you but I use a 49“ ultrawide from Dell 5120x1440 at home and a Lenovo 40” with 5120 x 2160 at work. The text is not blurred on either of them. But i have to say, i also use the native resolution, so there is no scaling

I love my AVP, and with the included strap that goes over the top of your head it makes it much more comfortable for those long sessions when you’re using your AVP as your monitor. I have 2 49” dell ultra wides stacked vertically for my office setup, and I use my AVP at home to get my close to that same feeling. Ultra wide screen support with your Mac is just fabulous! It’s worth the money. And If you’re a dev, you’ll get more use for your money out of an AVP vs a single function monitor. Just IMO from a day one AVP user and someone who was just thinking about buying an ultra wide for my flight sim setup I just built. Then I remembered I have my AVP and now I’m flying in VR which is wayyyy better than the monitor I would have bought.

Yes. For creativity work, in North America and 49”, the Dell IPS panel is the best. LG used to make a nice one with higher refresh rate, but not currently available. Image quality on the Dell IPS 49” is way better than the Samsung VA panel, though it is pricey.

Yeah. It’s really sweet for productivity and design, and the PiP and KVM work great. Only downside is sides is I wish it had a more aggressive curve and was faster than 60Hz refresh. But apparently we can’t have everything with an IPS panel this size since OLED is taking over the market. Side note, I had an OLED first and returned it due to horrible text fringing. Games looked great, but text and pictures suffered.

I just returned my Alienware OLED 21:9 due to fuzzy text fringing making work terrible. I’m replacing it with the Dell IPS 49” monitor and it will arrive within the week. I also tried the Samsung Neo G9 49” and the text was better on the Samsung VA panel than thebOLED by a long shot. My other monitor is an Asus IPS which is superior for text clarity, hence why I switched to the Dell 49” IPS. As far as I can tell the Dell 49” IPS is one of the only remaining IPS panels in the 49” format, with the ones from LG no longer available in my area.

I just got rid of my OLED widescreen that was 109ppi. If you go OLED make sure you go 140ppi or higher with a 4k2k monitor. I went with the Dell 49” IPS display. It 100% kicks butt on productivity compared to the Samsung VA panel. Text is crystal clear. Text fringing on OLED was not tolerable for me.

For productivity, the Dell with IPS display is one of the only IPS 49” monitors still in production. Only downsides are 60Hz refresh rate and very shallow 3800r curve. Everything else in NA is VA (OK for productivity) or OLED.

I would try it yourself first before getting a new monitor. What it is is that Apple removed some sub pixel text antialiasing from macOS a few years ago, so monitors under a certain pixel density can display text “blurry”, but often this isn’t noticeable I used a Dell ultrasharp 49” 5210x1440 ultrawide (it’s the equivalent of 2x 27” 1440p monitors side by side with no center bezel) and the text has always been fine for me. It’s obviously not going to be as sharp as something like a 27” 5K monitor or other “retina” screen (like the MacBook built in display), but it’s not an issue whatsoever

I had two 27". Now only one 49" Dell Ultrawide+MacBook screen. If you have to do a lot of demos and screen sharing it might be easier to have two separate screens. I noticed that having the Ultrawide forces me to share windows/tabs, rather than full screen (which is what you should do anyway).

I have been running a 49 inch curved Dell monitor for like 5 years. Love it and have had BetterSnapTool for most of that time. I think there is a way to set snap spaces in the new OS but haven’t messed with it since The snap tool I’m using is working fine.

Sorry for the late reply. At first, the strong curvature takes some time getting used to. Less so when gaming (that looks fanatical and you don’t really notice the curve at all). But when working, it does take some time to adjust. That can take a few days. I sit about 95–100 cm (3–3.2 ft) away, which should be about the limit for this kind of curvature and resolution (LG recommends 80 cm / 2.6 ft). Speaking of resolution: I’m using a Mac mini M4 Pro at the native resolution of 5120x2160. Some text and labels do appear a bit small (and I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore ;D). Sure, I *could* lower the resolution a bit, but then the image becomes a bit too soften for my taste.. I’m still experimenting with it a bit. That said, I’m very happy with the text clarity on the LG. Before this, I had a Dell 49” (5120 x 1440) with a lower pixel density (109 ppi). But honestly, I don’t notice any major difference now.

I have a 49 inch dell. Its curved, but still too flat (screen corners are very, very far away). I believe samsungs are better in this regard. I love the monitor for gaming, but I hate it for office work. In CAD you will never use the full screen, and managing the window arrangements is a pain in the ass. I do a lot of WFH, and screen sharing is annoying as hell. You basically can never share your screen because no-one will be able to read anything. And when sharing window instead of screen you will be switching around endlessly. Im thinking of strapping the 49 to a sim racing rig and going back to dual 27 1440p monitors or dual 32 4k for the desk setup.

I use a 5k2k ips daily for work, it offers so much utility with the vertical space, ppi, etc. It's such a great size for immersion that I tried out (but returned) the Dell ips black version to see if I could game too. I own the g9 oled, and it's an awesome monitor. Has Samsung qc issues, but I've gotten used to rebooting once in a while if there are glitches, etc. I love the glossy screen, and immersion is great on a lot of games with great 32:9 support. As a pure gaming monitor the 5120x1440 vs 5k2k will be subjective. You can make either immersive, and it's different types of immersion. For productivity the 5k2k is better, but you could do the g9 with a 4k 27" ips or similar easily. I assume you got the G9 for about half the price, so that's a big pro for it. Since you are in the return window, a few thoughts from a G9 owner who has thought about the 5k2k oled a lot: -How is your lighting in the room, do you ever use it with lamps or windows facing the screen? I'm big on glossy but it will be a mirror in those situations -Is this your only monitor or do you have room for a secondary? This is the big one. 5k2k is best of both worlds. -Have you had any issues with the screen? Waking up from sleep, artifacts or glitches when starting windows, black screens during gaming? A lot of these are tied to the crappy bundled cable. You can use a better dp cable or ideally a good hdmi one to fix most. There are still some inherent issues with the panel (I believe a part overheats) that I see once in a while with an upgraded cable -Can you try both? Seeing what type of immersion you prefer (wider field of view vs more vertical) will be key. This could be just looking at the 5k2k in a store at the same distance you would sit. I'm not planning to upgrade my g9, but I also use it upstairs just for gaming. I wouldn't use it downstairs for work and gaming, but it would be a toss-up between the 5k2k vs g9 and an ips 4k (and the blinds closed).

I’ve used different models across Dell, LG, Samsung, Lenovo, and Cepter for 49” IPS. I don’t think 57” is realistically anymore viable than 49”. Might be better to just double up (or more) on 49” if you need the real estate. The Dell Ultrasharp was definitely my favorite, but I recently picked up the Lenovo ThinkVision P49, and so far it’s giving Dell a run for the money. Albeit it is more expensive.
