Got mine for work. Just went black screen and unresponsive yesterday. Samsung customer support sucks.

It was great! I often have 3 windows open at once and the curved 49” is perfect for that

I used it during law school (so almost exclusively text) and it was fine. The text looked fine to me. Not super sharp and the Dell ultrawides are definitely crisper for text, but for being half the price of a comparable Dell I was happy with the odyssey

This will handle anything reasonable. I’ve got a very similar setup with a Samsung odyssey 49 and have great performance. Getting 144hz at 1440p. https://www.samsung.com/us/monitors/gaming/49-inch-odyssey-g9-g91f-dqhd-144hz-gaming-monitor-sku-ls49fg910enxza/?cid=eml-ecm-trnx-OrderReceipt

I’m at 49 inch 1440P Samsung G9 ultrawide user and to be completely honest with you. The vertical height is borderline even at 49 inches. I can’t imagine using a 34 inch Ultra Wide. The vertical height must be not much more than a 20 inch monitor. So at that point I would just get the best 27 inch regular high 4K monitor that I could afford. The price premium on Ultra Wide is not really worth it versus the performance unless you’re going really, really wide. Now, if that monitor was OLED, then you might be onto something.

r/mac • I’ve taken the position that a nice 4K monitor with high refresh rate (or 34” Ultrawide) will provide me a great user experience, over 5K slow refresh rate alternatives. Am I being reasonable? ->

For G9? You do not need any apps.

I have Amazon Fire Stick which I plug into HDMI and PC connected to DP. Then you select PBP in the screen menu and that's it. The only thing is, at least in my first gen G9 that it then defaults to 60Hz refresh rate but this is due to the fact the Fire Stick works at 60Hz. I am sure there is more similar devices out there and some may work at 120Hz. I just am not that much bothered. If I need to play some FPS I just switch to full screen mode to get that 240Hz. If you play FPS you cannot watch telly anyways. I have it side by side 2x 2560x1440 but you can set it to one occupying 2/3 and the other 1/3 as well if you want/need more space. EDIT: Oh, one more thing, if you use Fire Stick the audio obviously goes via HDMI but G9 has audio out mini jack socket so you just need a mini jack cable going from the monitor into your speakers/soundbar or whatever else you use for the sound. Or maybe the newer G9s have speakers built in?

Apart from refresh rate, these monitors will perform very closely and I wouldn't pay a premium for Samsung. I'd go with the cheaper one. There's a MSI 144hz OLED which also usually goes cheap and it is essentially the same as Gigabyte and Asus. Samsung G9's fame for sim racing doesn't come from their 1800R OLED, it comes from their exclusive 1000R VA. Despite having a much inferior panel, the deep 1000R curve makes it more immersive for sim racing and provides a bigger FOV, so it's still an option I'd consider. But when it comes to OLED, all monitors in this size are 1800R, so they're pretty much equivalent across brands. For sim racing, IMO a 49" ultrawide is superior to a big TV. TV's are flat and usually you can't mount them as close to your face as you wish. Both these factors greatly reduce horizontal FOV. They also leave kind of a big footprint in the room. I like how an ultrawide is even more effective than a 55ish TV while also being more compact.

Triples are best, if you have the space. For sim racing, 49" 32:9 is much better than 38" 21:9, because, well, it's much wider. The most curved ones like the Samsung G9 (non-OLED) will have quite distorted edges when showing a single projection yes, but you can set them as triples with a shallow angle to counteract that. iRacing and ACC have native implementations to compensate for the curve, so they won't have this kind of distortion at all. BTW, tighter curves are preferrable for sim racing, the wrap-around effect feels more natural than having to squint to see the edges of a very wide and flatter screen. I would never consider paying triple the price of a 34" for a 38". There is a nice difference of course, but it's not massive enough to justify the massive difference in price.

I love my two G9s. My first one was a first Gen, second one is OLED. The first Gen has died, and like most back then, was fairly symptomatic through its lifespan. My OLED G9 has been trouble free and is a total badass. I expect it to live a much longer life. My old G9 (for my flight Sim) is being replaced by an Ark 2nd Gen. Love these monitors a lot!

I have the non-oled G9. I ended up getting the lcd version because I read lots of issues with burn-in on the oled version. Now please understand I’m not suggesting that they are accurate, or that the individuals that truly suffered burn-in did or did nothing to cause such burn-in. But, my habits include leaving games paused in the background, or having productivity apps with static banners, etc open for hours at a time. I’m the one that’s going to get burn-in if it’s an issue. That said, my first lcd G9 was returned within an hour of unboxing due to it having manufacturing defects out of the box. My second G9, which I’ve had for a year, developed the same defects about 3 months. One defect is a pattern of grey dots, that’s the best way I can describe it. Not dead pixels, oddly grey dots that don’t fully light up that are circular. The pattern seemed almost identical on both monitors, weird, but definitely make it seem more likely it’s a true manufacturing defect or just a terrible batch and I got unlucky. The second defect is electrical. It’s like the capacitors have an issue when the monitor goes in and out of sleep mode repeatedly. The effect is the bottom half of the monitor has a wave horizontal lines that glitch and freeze the image momentarily. The issue goes away by unplugging power for 10-30m. I am still using this monitor because getting it repaired in warranty means having no monitor for weeks to months. I am going to get it repaired or replaced right before my 2 year warranty expires in hopes they have addressed this issue. I will probably buy a newer unit and sell the repaired/replaced version. So do your research on if that model has issues. I absolutely love my G9, there are very few competitors in this space. It’s a ridiculously awesome monitor and would be 10/10 if it weren’t for the weird issues I’ve had with mine. Good luck, I hope whatever you decide works out best for you!

G9 oled is not even in the same league as the 5k2k IMO, the 45 inch totally blows it away The only monitor that you could compare to the 5k2k would be the 57 inch G9. I had the G9 oled and the 1800r curve really sucks for gaming. The original G9 with the 1000r curve felt way more immersive than the G9 oled

I would say so. I had the OG VA G9 and while it was amazing, I felt like it was too much of a periscope for gaming. The more balanced 21:9 ratio is both slightly better supported in games and the extra height of the 45inch setup gives it a much better experience. If you don’t want something that tall, LG is also releasing the 34 and 39 inch versions soon. 34in=27in 16:9, 39=32 and 45=37. Your G9 is the same as a 27in monitor right now in terms of height.
