I just got one from Costco, it was their cheapest available but after reading reviews on all their vacuums this one seemed like it was the best. It works great on my carpet, I have 2 cats and 2 of the 3 humans in the house have long hair (and we old so its always falling out). I paid around $100 for it, maybe less. It's a "Bissel clean view power edge rewind pet upright vacuum" and here is the link for it (if you don't have a Costco membership you can buy it on amazon) https://www.costco.com/bissell-cleanview-poweredge-rewind-pet-upright-vacuum.product.4000270403.html
Maybe the same one you had, but I think this one works great (I have 4 shedding dogs): [Amazon.com - Bissell 2254 CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet Upright Bagless Vacuum, Automatic Cord Rewind, Swivel Steering, Powerful Pet Hair Pickup, Specialized Pet Tools, Large Capacity Dirt Tank, Teal](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F6MXJ9X/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1)
I do not recommend that bottom shark one at all. Worst vacuum I’ve ever owned/used. I currently have the bussel clean view swivel rewind and I absolutely love it. This is actually my second one in 10 years. I enjoy vacuuming because I love seeing all that it sucks up! lol
I have two golden retrievers. I love my Bissell Cleanview Swivel Rewind Pet. I’ve had it six years, great at dog hair, doesn’t clog and easy to take apart and clean. I had Dyson Pets before that and they cost twice as much and both failed after two years. I also have a cordless Hoover Revolve Pet I use on the level I have hardwoods and while not as heavy duty as the Bissell it does a great job. The best thing I have used to get dog hair off couches is a pet hair removal glove I got off Amazon, it’s like an oven mitt, you scrub at the couch with it and the hair just balls up and comes off.
I would go for a bigger heavy vacuum like a Bissell power force helix with that budget. Usually heavy vacuums are my go to since they are powerful and you have kids. The one I bought was in 2013 however and at that time it was so good. Not sure of the new Bissells since I havent bought them. However i had a cleanview cord rewind a couple months ago and peformed well. Again it's a vacuum that is found at walmart so it's cheap but works very well for its price. However there might be better options I'm not aware of.
If at any moment money is a concern you can get a good Bissell vacuum at walmart for like 150 bucks. Something like a powerforce helix, cleanview, or anything in that style. I remember I bought one in 2013 and it was amazing for the buck. However not sure how is a powerforce helix now a days. I had a cleanview a couple months ago and it worked quite awesome but ate a ziptie and lost suction. However, great vacuum still should last you around five years. If your apartment is in Miami I'd choose dyson animal since they are in fact powerful. However they are at the 400-650 dollar price range. I have a Dyson DC24 used (old) which I recently got and its awesome. Dosen't pick much as a heavier vacuum but the ball technology is awesome and its fun to use so I can imagine how the new ones would be. I'd stay away from cordless vacuums. They are weird and when you use one it feels weird and it feels like its gonna die for some reason and are not as powerful. The heavier the better I feel tho.
I know they are worse, but the odds of me running out of bags and then not vacuuming for three months are significant. I just had a second hand Bissell Rewind die on me. It was functional if annoying. I'm hoping there are better bagless vacuums in the world, preferably under $250. I have cats and carpet, and I don't want to walk on crumbs. ETA: The things that were annoying about the Bissell were that it was heavy, the roller brush wasn't that good, and I couldn't turn the roller off. The crappy roller led to me setting it too low, which eventually caused damage to the roller, which I cannot find a replacement for anywhere online. It survived 8 years of abuse, but I'm hoping there are better options. Also edited to spell the name right.
I hear you, but if I get one more goddamn appliance that I have to think about when I'm not in my house, I'll scream. I have hand washed dishes because I was out of dishwasher detergent. The Bissel lasted me 8 years, which is acceptable to me in terms of lifespan. Its failure was because the part that needs replacing isn't sold anymore. If all bagless vacuums are equally trash, so be it. I'll close my eyes and buy the cheapest one that Good Housekeeping could be paid to recommend. If there's any reasonable difference in the category though, I'd prefer to get a somewhat better one.
Tbh I'm glad I'm not the only one that monitors my end product of vacuuming so closely. I have a Bissell pet pro with the retractable cord and it works very well and the freaking cord rewind is my favorite feature. If and when I ever replace it the cord retraction is pretty much a non-negotiable
I used to have the bissell pet purple one with retractable plug
