I live in a 1,700 square foot townhome - first floor is hard flooring and the second floor is all carpet. The carpet in my house is a typical contractor grade carpet that you find in the US with a low to medium pile and low density. I also have a Siberian Husky, so I have to deal with a lot of dog hair pretty much year round. I have both a Miele C1 Classic Turbo and a Dyson Ball Animal Origin. The Miele really excels at cleaning the hard floors, furniture, stairs, and tight to reach areas. Where as the Dyson really excels at cleaning the carpet, especially in the bedrooms where space is a bit tighter than the open floor plan on my fist floor. The Miele C1 Classic Turbo comes with the TurboTeQ head which can be used on carpet. And I find that it actually works really well - maybe even better than the Dyson in some ways. That being said I find that they Dyson is just easier to use on the carpet and in the bedrooms. Given your budget of $850 I would suggest that you purchase a Miele Classic C1 Pure Suction (hard floors only) for $319 on Amazon and a Dyson Ball Animal Origin (carpet only) for $329. Neither of these vacuums are perfect IMO, but together they make the perfect combination as you can use each for the task that they excel at. If you wanted to you could go with the Miele C1 Classic Turbo and the Dyson Ball Animal Origin which is the combination that I have. The C1 Classic Turbo comes with TurboTeQ head so you could use it on carpet if you wanted to. Price for that would be $399.
I was lead to believe the same thing you were. I purchased the Miele C1 Classic Turbo with the understanding that it would more or less be useless on the carpet. But I decided to try it anyway and really do not see what the issue is... If you had really dense or high pile carpet I could foresee it being an issue. But that is really not common in the US. I think that the folks that are pushing that powered head are vacuum sales people that are dealing with a different client base. And I could foresee that client base having very dense or high pile carpet.
Ok so firstly, never buy a shark. They’re some of the worst vacuums in the long run and break easily also shark bins are super small. If you want a Dyson corded, they sell the ball origin and the ball animal (discontinued on Dyson’s website) for £250-£300 so a little over budget. I personally prefer Dysons as bagless uprights as they’re super powerful and easy to use. The only downside is that they’re a little heavy compared to most vacuums. If there is anything else specific or of your not willing to get the Dysons because you don’t like the reviews or design or price just let me know in a reply.

Canister vacuum: Dyson cinetic big ball (no maintainance) / Dyson big ball (filter to maintain) Both have hygienic bin emptying (your finger doesnt go near the waste disposal area) It’s easy to reach around due to the extendable wand. Upright: Dyson ball upright vacuum (any) theyre easy to maintain, they have hygienic bin emptying, and they have a long wand on the back thats easy to use with the on board tools. Cordless: Dyson v12 (it’s small and uses a button power system, easy to manoeuvre) / Dyson gen5 (it’s normal size, uses a power button system and had a built in crevice and dusting brush combo). Both have hygienic bin emptying
Plug in Dyson Animal that's got to be at least 15 years old. Just keeps on suckin'! Had to replace the hose on it last year, but that's it. We have three cats, a golden, and I shed a fair bit as well. We have hardwood, tile, and rugs. I like that it just seamlessly goes from one to the other.
100% It was tough to justify the new price, but no regrets now. It's such an odd vacuum in that it feels so... rickety? It always feels like it should fall apart, yet refuses to die. Still pulls animal hair out of carpet like nothing else. I see mint condition ones on the local classifieds for $100 all the time. If ours died, I'd replace it with the same one without a second thought.
I have the Dyson Ball Animal 3. I've had it for about a year and a half and it replaced my previous Dyson Ball Animal 1 which lasted me just shy of 6 years. I vacuum at least once daily because that's my preference but we really could be good with vacuuming once or twice weekly. We are in a two bedroom apartment with two long-haired cats, one short hair cat and my partner who has long hair and sheds like crazy. It's great for couches and cat trees too as the attachments it comes work very well! I also like the extendable hose as it helps get cobwebs from the ceilings and light fixtures. This has been hands down the best vacuum I've ever had. My one and only gripe with this vacuum is that its pretty heavy so if you need to lift it, make sure you or someone in your life has a bit of muscle to help! :)
I joined the sub to see what you're talking about. I love my Dyson vacuums (10yo Ball Animal and 1yo V8).
Lovely! I really appreciate the HEPA filter. I nearly bought a newer model instead, but that sold me.
I have a dyson ball from 2020. I got the “pet” version, but i forgot the model specifically. But i’ve had it for 5 years. And have 2 short haired cats and a wife. I vaccum every other week. It works well and the carpet definitely feels cleaner after the round of cleaning i did. I’m happy with it and i hope it keeps working sell. I do keep up with cleaning it as much as i can to keep it in good shape. There may be alternatives to dyson, but i’ve enjoyed them so far.
Yes, newer makes a huge difference. I purchased a prior gen Dyson Ball Animal vacuum, and hair would get caught in the bearing of the motor and burn. Fortunately I caught a warranty replacement right before falling outside of the window, and because they no longer had that model in stock, replaced it with the Dyson Ball Animal 3 vacuum. The same issues are completely resolved on the newer model. Now, is it really BIFL? Doubt it, but I prefer bagless for the cost savings long term.
I have 2 broken shark lift away navigators one so far is just the head replacement and the other is the hose to the vacuum elbow connector but I can't tell if it includes the hose. Then I have an orange ball dyson I can figure out how to engage the beater bar. I bought the navigators refurbished. One lasted years the other more recent 1 lasted maybe a year. They keep making them so much less quality it seems. What can I do with these vacuums? I literally got a vacuum graveyard growing in my living room.
Hardwood floors here. Dyson upright lasted... 9 years, I just looked up when we bought it. It just failed, and it basically outlasted our cats. I was using it a few times a week, sometimes quite heavy use. It's the ball one, animal something. I used it to vacuum up stray litter - I'd fill the receptacle area twice in a single vacuum, 11 litter boxes in one area, 3 in another, so lots of litter got scattered on the floor. Most of our house is hardwood or tile or whatever, not a lot of carpet. Warning - it pulls in so hard that it doesn't move on carpet, except commercial welcome mat type stuff which we have under the litter boxes. What was nice about the Dyson was that I could leave the vacuum at the bottom of the stairs and do the entire stairs with the narrow nozzle because the hose tube thing was so long. Also no bags. Was a bit noisy, and heavy to lug around. We only had to wash it out every now and then. Seems like motor burnt out, or something. We have a Miele canister now, but I haven't had to deal with 8 cats worth of hair, just 1. We got it with the single use bags but got a reusable one, and I've emptied it twice now (from one vacuuming of litter and such). It's very quiet - I often turn it off by accident when it's running - and lightweight. 2 filters and 1 bag, so lots of stuff to replace on a regular basis. It was so quiet I was worried it wouldn't work well, but I've been pleasantly surprised with it. It's on par with the Dyson. Hate the Shark. Used it at work (almost 5 years), virtually useless, and we don't have cats there (lol). Two locations, 4 vacuums. They just don't pull up stuff, don't do anything. They were rated really good by Consumer Reports, but my experience with them was extremely poor. Two failed at the places where I worked, so I ordered 2 more, hoping that the bad ones were just one offs. I'd have to run over the same bit of leaf or whatever a few times to pick it up. I overhauled them etc but no better. New ones that I got for the store (I bought one for one location, then another for the other), same experience. I told the store management not to order them, to find something else. Had bagless Bissels. They burned out after about 5-6 months. I worked for a while at a place that sold them so I bought them somewhat regularly. Felt like a waste of materials and landfill so went for the Dyson after going through maybe 6-8 Bissels. Normally I'm a "buy it once the right way" kind of person, but for some reason I went through a zillion Bissels. The Dyson was a "buy it once the right way" and I hope the Miele is too.
We’ve got a Dyson Ball Animal upright vacuum that works well, and a Bissell Pet Hair Eraser portable for the couches.
