Best performing is objectively the Dyson Gen 5 Detect. There are.plebty of reports of poor customer service outside of the UK and quality issues for some. My V11 has done 5 years and is going great still. Avoid the Miele Tri flex thing, overpriced and doesn't perform on the same level. The latest from Samsung looks interesting but very expensive too

The best stick vacuum is objectively the Dyson Gen 5 detect, it's expensive though.

I’ve had the V8 for 4.5 years and was quite happy with it. It wasnt good enough though with our new house with carpet upstairs so decided to upgrade to a gen5detect.

Love mine. Folks comparing it to a plug-in vacuum is silly. I have a whole house vacuum that is nearly silent, has insane suction and moves dust to a completely different part of the house, but the Dyson is my better vacuum for everything that doesn’t require all that power. Buying a plug in Miele or Sebo would make no sense for my use-case but just like anything on Reddit, echo chambers are the endgame due to the upvoting mechanic.

I have the dyson gen 5 and hair gets wrapped around the tiny wheels very easily and it’s a huge PITA to remove. After about a year the wheels stop turning entirely. DONT BUY IT.

Gen5 doesnt have that issue. Turn it on, turn it off when done

I have the Dyson ball multi floor whatever from Costco. I think it’s a dc50. It’s like 10 years old. It works ok, but our gen 5, which is probably a year old, still kicks its butt on carpet. It surprises me because who’d think a battery vacuum would be better? It is. And it’s great on all surfaces.

Tineco is complete garbage compared to a Dyson. I've owned both

My Dyson works wonderfully, and didn't cost anywhere near $1000. I can vacuum our 1500sqft main floor on half a charge, and I see no real battery degradation after 2 years of use.

I have mostly hardwood and that thing licks the floor clean. It’s ok, You don’t have feel bad about spending more on a vacuum that’s inferior to a mass produced Best Buy special. Also spending $1200 on anything dosnt make a bit of difference to my finances.

Yeah our family just bought our fourth Dyson, not because of any failures, infact they're all running extremely well without any need for replacement parts or special maintenance (pulling all the hair out of rotating heads and cleaning filters is all.) The oldest i use in my workshop so I don't have to haul the shopvac around, works great for 90% of the vacuuming i need it for. All 4 are cordless, all implements are original. Batteries started to fade on the first one so I bought a 5$ mod to convert it to use my dewalt batteries, now it never runs out of charge. I'll just convert them all to dewalt as their internal batteries fade too much over time/use.

Honestly, don't buy the Dyson V16. I bought it and just sent it back. The new brush is terrible. It doesn't vacuum properly on hard floors or carpets. The Dyson Gen5 performs much better. Otherwise, the V15 is excellent value for money.

The suction was on eco mode too… I wasn’t a big fan of Dyson but they blew the roof off with this one, and tracking how much particles it’s picking up off the floor is surreal to look at when you have a floor like mine

You can slap a $20 laser on a toaster, it won’t make it clean like a Dyson.

My Dyson takes care of every single tiny micro particle on the floor it’s amazing

If you can get your hands on a decently priced Dyson outsize you will love it

I have the same vacuum and though the light is nice to see all the shit on the floor, the suction doesn’t work very well to pick it up. I find myself having to make several passes. And yes, I maintain all the parts and filters. I wish it worked better cause it’s nice looking and lightweight.

Gen5Detect but the soft roller really makes it a stick clean so much better. Relying on suction alone isn’t ideal since they don’t have as much as stronger corded vacs.

The chom chom roller is the best for couches. I never thought I’d be a Dyson person but I got the one with the laser hardwood floor attachment and pet hair couch attachment and it’s the greatest.

The laser head is so fun to use. We have 2 cordless Dysons and they get regular use with our 2 dogs and 7 cats. No complaints whatsoever. Had the V11 for a while now and the laser one is more recent. I think some people don’t realize the vacuums themselves need cleaning once in a while - like rinsing off the filter and taking the rollers off to clean them.

Honestly I'm perfectly content with the fact that my Dyson detect is just adequate at picking up dirt, what it outshines in is CONVENIENCE and I'm asking to pay the pretty penny for that

Dyson Detect is crap. Worst $1k I’ve ever spent. Get a Miele if you want to actually CLEAN.

Yes. I use my cordless Dyson daily for small messes and use it as my main vacuum. It’s so convenient. I love it. I also got it on sale at Costco.

Yes, being cordless and effective for what I need. They have HEPA filters, at least mine does. The no bag is a feature for some of us not a defect. It's all a tradeoff. For some the tradeoff for cordless, no bags, good suction, etal means we vacuum more than we otherwise would. I dont make a mess emptying it vs making a mess swapping bags - cause I overfill it. That's a me thing but it's a consistent me thing and I dont have to worry about it with the Dyson. I never would have thought I'd defend a near $1,000 cordless vacuum but I got one as a gift and will never buy anything different now.

I have the rechargeable #2 on the list Dyson stick and I LOVE IT! If you have carpeted stairs, it’s no challenge dealing with those. I live in a 2700 square foot cookie-cutter tract house. First floor is laminate with an office that has carpet. Then there’s the stairs which leads to 5 carpeted bedrooms, two tile bathrooms, a laundry room, and a walk-in carpeted closet. I can get all of that done one charge.

I would never buy a Dyson if it wasn’t for Costco and their lifetime returns. We’re on our third Dyson cordless. They work well when they work, and then eventually they break. Maybe Costco gets cheap ones.

Cordless Dyson if you have hardwood floors. If our girl was ever on carpet I’d get a corded version but the run time on the cordless is sufficient and not having a cord to mess with means I actually use it

We've a Henry pet that does wonders for pet hair on the carpet areas and would definitely get another but the thing just goes and as others have said they hold up to abuse from kids aswell We got a 2nd hand Dyson cordless on cheap a few yrs back - it's grand for a daily clean up on wooden floors - I wouldn't recommend one though if u have pets as it barely does anything on the carpets and I wouldn't go near them at the prices in the shops though.

same here for the Shark Plug in model. the amount of dog hair / ETC it can get out of the carpet vs the Dyson Cordless cannot be compared. For purely hard wood / laminate (or very little rug or carpet) Dyson cordless stick vac is IMO is plenty. Good enough run time, and not heavy or unwieldy.

Literally buy it for life. Sweeping is an everyday job and with the Dyson, we vac the hard floor everyday for a few mins and get on with life. Worth the $2xx after rewards.

Call me crazy but my Dyson is still super strong after 4 years. Once the “beater bar” stopped working in mine, called Dyson and they told me to bring it to the Dyson repair place down the street. They gave me a whole new vacuum after 10 mins because they didn’t have a matching color brush head and didn’t want to send me home with a purple and yellow vacuum. When my cordless Dyson stopped working they did the same thing. I’m pretty lucky having an actual Dyson store down the street so I’m sure my experience is better than most, but they have taken care of me.

The sharks are half the price at least and have nearly equal weight profiles as Dyson. Dyson warranties on cordless are just as garbage as everyone else's. Really need to talk to vacuum specialists that take care of vacuums and do maintenance for years. Not reddit consumers who never clean the filters, brushes, or tracks not to mention reviewing vacuums that have only been around for a few years

OMG I literally live and die by my Dysons. I have one mounted on my kitchen wall and another for the second floor. I literally use them like 3x a day bc it’s so easy. I will never use a corded again lol

I've had my cordless Dyson for 5 years now. I can never go back. You just need to make sure you take it apart and thoroughly clean it every 6-8 months depending on use. The ease of vacuuming with it makes me despise cord vacuums. I can never go back. Imagine trying to water your plants around your entire house with a hose versus a squirt gun that put out like a hose.

I’m sorry, the cordless Dyson isn’t that great for carpet/rugs so I wouldn’t rank it that high. The attachments are excellent for their specific uses like couch/mattress, the nozzle for corners but I have the old school Dyson Ball vacuum cleaner and it’s sooo much better for rugs. Vacuum’s with cords for the win!

I just took my cordless Dyson to the dump. Maintenance nightmare.

I work in shops, and Dyson cordless vacuums are revered. Need to vacuum up sawdust and aluminum chips and plastic shavings and metal filings? The Dyson will do it. Sharks and similar seem to break in a month or two. The power tool branded vacs are tougher but don’t work as well. The only downside is the batteries, but you can buy a DeWalt or Milwaukee adapter and never worry about it again.

My Miele corded vacuum has lasted for over almost 15 years. Some of the attachments look worn down, but they still work very well. I also have a Roomba and a Dyson cordless vacuum, but I don’t feel like it’s a fair comparison, since battery packs degrade over time. I’ve had to replace the battery pack for the Dyson, and my Roomba seems like it runs out of juice noticeably faster than before.

I did not have reddit before buying a dyson but signed up just to warn others. It's a beautiful machine.... that works for a year and then breaks (at least the cordless one) But what makes it worse is for a "premium product" the customer service is up there in the worst I have received. My vacuum broke a month ago (it's only a year old and still under 'warrenty'). \- I have been 30 days without a vacuum (it will probably be 45-60 by the time it's sorted) \- I have spent over 6-8 hours with customer service PS. I reached out on every other channel to give them an opportunity to rectify/ sort this out and they wouldn't do anything about it. Which is why I am here warning everyone else haha I would only every by one again at Costco where you can return it right away. I bought directly from dyson and there is no honor or care for customers when working directly with them .

We have Dyson, Miele and Henry. Dyson cordless is the best for daily convenience but not so good for a deep clean and it's quite high maintenance with all the charging, emptying, filter washing, getting hair off the brushes etc. Miele is solid and the suction is bonkers but I wouldn't use it for building work etc as I want to keep it nice. Henry is the work horse for cleaning the log burner, mud, brick, sick. You can chuck anything at him but he falls over a lot.

Har ikke hatt samme kvalitetsproblemer med min Dyson etter 3 år. Har den stående lett tilgjengelig for kjapp støvsuging av gang, kjøkken og spisestue. Så setter jeg ut ordentlig støvsuger når det skal ukesvaskes i hus. Pluss en Roomba som surrer rundt av og til og setter seg fast i lekene til de små (2voksne-2barn-200kvm)

I feel like I must be the only person who loves their cordless dyson. I have a toddler and a baby and I have to hoover like three times a day.. if I had a big chunky corded thing, I definitely just wouldn't bother.

We have the shark vacuum others have mentioned, a Roomba, and a cordless Dyson 😅 I still feel like I'm struggling to keep up with dog hair. We just got a new Dyson, but the shark vacuum is 6 years old and still working fine. I do have to replace or clean the filters pretty often though. Edited to add the shark one we have is the navigator.

100%. Pretty much veryone hates Dyson on these forums. I’d hate to lug my large Miele around with me everywhere I go to clean. I worked as a service tech on Miele and probably won’t ever buy one now. They are both designed for different situations. But the Dyson in my house gets used the most.

Yeah I worked as a vacuum tech for years and sold Miele, Sebo and Dysons, But Mieles were in for repair probably the most. All the service techs including me hated them. Way over priced and a royal pain to work on/get parts. The Dyson cordless that that I’ve owned for six years now has worked flawlessly and still gets 40 minutes on charge easily. And also for all the Dysons I’ve recommended to people through the years have all worked amazing. Dyson blows the competition away when it comes to innovation, and the overall product experience, especially the cordless game. Will never go back from Dyson. I do really like Sebo! Just expensive and hate bags/low portability.

Miele is the best but for ease a dyson cordless is good - maybe the pet hair one. I have both- dyson for small jobs and Miele for big jobs. After i upgraded the dyson battery it works better than ever after 6 + years.

They are dotted around the house: One Shark, one Dyson cordless (on its way out), one Dyson corded. I think there's a second Dyson somewhere, but I use that to suck up spiders and gravel. And a Eufy robovacmop thing. Edit: and a Vax carpet cleaner.

I have a cat and she sheds a lot! 😹 I used to have a Dyson but I hate to hold pressing the power button all the time. I love my LG.

I really wanted to love the Dyson cordless vacuums, but I couldn’t get over having to press the button down the entire time vacuuming. Plus, the stick vacuums are a bit top heavy as well so it just felt super awkward to maneuver. It could just be because my hands are super hypermobile and so it’s ridiculously uncomfortable. I’m researching other cordless/stick brands.

I love mine, a Dyson. It lives in our pantry and I use it multiple times a day. It’s definitely not meant for heavy duty vacuuming, I still like a regular old plug in one. But it’s SO nice for a quick clean up with two toddlers and a dog.

I’ve got a Dyson cordless and a Miele corded. The Dyson is great for everyday cleaning up after the kids as it’s a pain to drag the other one out all the time. But I wouldn’t want to rely on the Dyson as the Miele is so much more powerful. I think all cordless ones will be limited unless you don’t have any carpets or rugs.

I bought a Dyson cordless vacuum in 2018, so far no issues but then again it’s only been going on 7 years. But I’ve been spoiled by cordless vacuuming, especially since my house was built in the 20s and has few options for outlets.

Ik raad echt alleen maar Dyson aan, van klantenservice tot product krijg je waar voor je geld. Helaas kost t wel belachelijk veel geld. De bedrade Dyson die ik 15 jaar geleden had gekocht ( pfff das oud ... ) was 5 jaar geleden door een defect stuk gegaan en heb kosteloos een nieuwe gekregen. Ik woon inmiddels 20 jaar op mezelf, heb voor de Dyson 2 andere zakloze zuigers gehad, welke duidelijk duurkoop waren. Draadloos ook een Dyson gekocht en hier niets over te klagen.

I bought a Dyson cordless a few years back and the first week I had it i new it was a mistake it will only stay charged long enough for me to do one room I call Dyson and they said that was the way it was the battery  only last about 15 minutes  a waste of money I bought a sharp I can leave it off the charger for one day and go back the next day and it is still charged amazing how much a Dyson cost and not worth a dine and a sharp half the price and ten times better  I would never recommend a duson

Cordless Miele is worse compared to cordless Dyson. I have both.

Running out of battery while you're vacuuming it so frustrating

4 years for a vacuum is terrible value for money ae. Expectations are so low these days for product longevity. Dyson are supposed to be the most premium vacuum, and it lasts about a year before it starts going down hill. After that you have to buy cheap Chinese battery adapter's to even use them. The filters are impossible to wash, and suction is below average.

Yeah I had a piece crack on my cordless Dyson when I dropped it, and they sent me a replacement no problem. While I was on the phone with them, I mentioned the battery was draining pretty fast and it wasn’t sucking as well as it used to, and they sent a new battery and filter as well. Also, it was outside the warranty period, so I was pretty happy with the customer service.

I agree. We went through two cordless Dyson vacuums in 4 years and that’s not cheap considering they were $600+ each

I agree. We have a Dyson and it gets used every day for little spills here and there. Occasionally it’ll take it out to the car for a quick vacuum because… kids. The battery life is abysmal though. I’ve heard great things about the Shark cordless.

hahah not sure how acurate that analogy is, but I love it. as I love my dyson, never in my life am I going back to corded vacuums

I literally just finished vacuuming with our Miele. We have 3 kids, 2 cats and a dog and this thing is the goat. I also have one of those cordless Dysons, which are good for spot cleaning here and there, but if I run the Miele immediately after the Dyson, it still picks up dirt! They go on sale sometimes, too. I bought ours from a small local vacuum place in BC called Big Gary’s Vacuums. They were matching the sale price at Costco.

I think you have had some trauma from older vacuums regarding batteries. Modern vacuums will last double that without losing too much power. It is no different than laptops. Those batteries used to die or be useless in 3-4 years but these days 5-6 is easily achieved, same for phones, and vacuums aren't discharged and recharged nearly as often. To illustrate, my 4 year old Philips vacuum has lost 0 of its charging capabilities. And while I agree that Dyson has good suction, they are reliability nightmares. I had two. I replaced the first after 3 years because it just stopped performing and no amount of cleaning did anything to change that. The second developed the same issues in about 2 years. I managed to convince support to send me a new motor but by then I was so pissed off with the brand (expensive and unreliable are a hateful combo) that I will never buy Dyson again (much of their stuff looks fancy but are outright scams). My Philips 8000 is as mentioned 4 years old and it has lost some of its suction power but will run about 40 minutes on a charge, same as when I bought it. Not super enthusiastic about the suction performance going down in 4 years but it has been better in pretty much every way compared to the Dyson (which refused to hoover up any of the cat litter on the floor eventhough it had much better suction, and it was FAR quieter too). Never again Dyson. Look up Dyson and Scam on Youtube and watch a few vids before you buy anything.

My cordless Dyson lasted 3 years. Recently got a new corded vacuum not worth having to replace every 3 years vacuum cleaners should last 20

I know vacuum fans/experts hate Dyson, but my Dyson has been working great and it actually makes me want go vacuum. I don’t like dragging a cord around. It’s easy to use, my kids can use it too, they love it and take turn to do it.

I have a lower end Miele as my main vacuum and have had it for 10 years and it is like new... however I did supplement with a Dyson cordless for awhile and it went through a battery every year and I had to replace several broken plastic bits on the cannister.... also those make a mess when you try to empty them..... No cordless vacuums are BIFL.... HOWEVER we did get a Samsung Bespoke Jet cordless vac 2 years ago and I love that thing. Pricy for a cordless but it is way better quality than the Dyson and has a charging base that also contains a vacuum/bag that sucks the dirt out of it into a bag... so completely mess-less. It also has two batteries that can be swapped in seconds like a power tool. The second battery mounts to the dock in a second charger. It is also quieter than the Dyson and the Miele.

Get yourself a quality bagless stick vac. Super convenient to use, you'll find your house way cleaner because you'll use it way more often. Dyson would be my choice.

I'm on year 5 or 6 of my Dyson... biggest complaint is the battery seems to not last as long... plenty of use with pets.

We’ve had our cordless dyson for 5 years but it’s honestly not the best compared to a rainbow or other brands at this point in its life.

Vi har Dyson batteri til daglig bruk. Lett å ta fram(viktig), og tar det meste. 114 kvadrat ville gå greit på ein lading. Men når bilen skulle støvsugast blei den for svak. Då måtte eg fram med eit godt gammalt kabla beist. Så vi ville uten tvil kjøpt igjen, men hatt ein tradisjonell til dei vrange punktene.

I hate my cordless Dyson and had to use the warranty 3 times in the first year. My corded one is fine. 

I pull both Mieles and Dysons out of the trash. These days I only grab the cordless Dyso9ns, but in the past have done the upright models. They are usually work after cleaning up. Maybe half the cordless examples I get need a new battery.

I got Dyson and I love it. she does hard and soft floors, she’s light enough for cob webs, car cleaning, you can lower the suck so if you spill crumbs at night it’s quiet. you can get unbranded acsessories so I got alsorts of things to help clean cars, keyboards, I got clips for the tube to hold more nozzles, I got a big bendy tube so stairs is a breeze. the filters are washable, I got a load of unbranded so I can swap them out more often. any breakages you can buy most spare parts online which is super handy also you just twist the end and the rollerbar pops out which makes long hair cleaning so easy. I used to hate sitting on the floor with sicciors cutting hair off the bar. I don’t miss trailing cables or the bulk of the Hoover.

In another life I was a Kirby service tech and I serviced machines on a number of occasions > 40-50 years old. At the time they had parts available for all machines. They ARE expensive (and the sales process leaves a lot to be desired) but are generally built like tanks. If there's a weak point, it's the fan. Even if it is Lexan, hard/heavy enough debris (eg bolts) can shatter the blades. The nice thing about the design is that instead of putting the bag inline with the fan, the bags fill from the top so it's able to maintain airflow. We have one (though it was a gift) but generally use our Dyson cordless day to day.

Honestly as an ex appliance engineer, the cordless Dysons are great for use but terrible when something goes wrong. We used to just write them off if it was anything more than a blockage. Dyson are also very difficult to deal with to get parts etc.

I didn't mean consumer end I meant b2b they were difficult to deal with i.e. sourcing the parts for the customer and general support.

I’m surprised to see you say Dyson is difficult for parts. I’ve been buying their cordless vacs for 10+ years and any time I need a part they either overnight for free or they charge a fair price.

I’ve only had 2 over the 10+ years. Someone broke my first one and then I replaced it with a newer model.

I have a cordless dyson for 7 years. The battery crapped out halfway through but the batteries for powertools(which we have) also fits. So we use those. Now I dont know if the original battery is shit or not because I dropped the vacuum mulitple times so that might be my fault. But hey after dropping it so many times, it still works!!

There’s no single vac that does it all except for maybe a super heavy super expensive traditional canister like a Miele. For an everyday hard floor vac (and light carpet vac) the best is Levoit on Amazon that's about $200. It's a Dyson-like machine that overcomes a lot of the longtime design issues with Dysons (such as, it can stand up by itself -- what a concept). But we also keep the Dyson around for a more aggressive carpet vac when we need it. We also have a Eureka boss -- powerful and dependable small canister vac. And a monster shop vac in the basement. Dysons are great but they're really expensive and their air filtering system is overly complicated and tends to lose efficiency. If you own a Dyson, watch all the available Youtubes on how to clean it with pressurized air so you can keep it running. Given the competition from newer manufacturers like Levoit, I think it's going to be harder for Dyson to justify selling floor vacs for close to $1000.

I just asked about how often I’d be buying bags for a sebo with two high shedding large dogs, (similar probably too a gsd and 3 (if long hair cats) I would probably be replacing the bag every week. (Actually more than that because I didn’t tell people I also have 3 cats haha) Someone with a husky commented that they replace the bag 1.5-2 times a month. Calculating that cost for two dogs is another 210 a year in bags (probably more for me) I am taking that into account with  replacing a vacuum that died (Dyson) but it doesn’t have a bag or a Sebo that has a 10 year warranty but I will have probably bought 2-3 dysons in that time period with the amount I’d be spending on bags. I haven’t decided yet 🙃 but thought I’d share the numbers.
