The Hoover Windtunnel XL. I have one for just because but it proved its mettle when we moved into a rental home that, we were told, had been professionally cleaned and the carpet was new. Nope. Previous occupants had two Great Pyrenees who spent a lotta time indoors. The carpet was such that it effectively hid the fur until I got busy with the vacuum. ASTONISHING amount of fur and dander collected. This unit also has a washable double filter that makes a huge difference in maintaining the level of effectiveness. Also, I have a commercial-grade, body-carried cannister vacuum (also Hoover). It works miracles on hard-surface floors and upholstery, and carpet edges and baseboards.  The cash outlay is an investment ($130 for the cannister, $100 for the upright) but there's a lot of comfort in knowing these two can tackle almost anything.

I’ve used the Hoover Windtunnel, then the Dyson Ball Animal 2, before finally settling on the Sebo X 7 Premium. It’s the best vacuum cleaner I’ve ever owned, and it’s my final upright for the foreseeable future.

We have hard surfaces on 1st & 2nd floors, Our Dyson stick V8 & V10 (one per floor, oldest is like 8 years?) is great for those; but I'd never rely on it for carpets. For that I have a 25 year old Hoover Windyunnel bagged that is repairable and running well.

I still have a Hoover Windtunnel from 2001 or 2002 I think. I haven’t been using it much because I need to replace some bearings. Those things were incredible, and this is coming from a guy who never thought he’d be the least bit interested or excited about a vacuum cleaner.

I have 2 Hoover Windtunnels. Work great very old. I have 3 working Shark Robot vacs. Oldest is 12 yrs old. Still using all 3 on each level of house.

I would NOT recommend any of the cordless vacuums, stick or otherwise.. I spent $500 on a Dyson V11 cordless stick and it lost suction after a couple of months. Consumer Reports won't even recommend a cordless vacuum because of the power loss. I have a Hoover bagless upright that works well.
