We've used a V12 for 4 years, which has been more than adequate for the hardwood/tile floors in our 1600sq house. But we do have a lot of thick area rugs, which we use a bagged upright vacuum for (a Hoover Tempo purchased for $40 on clearance). The Dyson doesn't have the power or battery life to properly clean those as there is no substitute for the Hoover's 1400W motor. But it shines as a convenient way to clean the hard floors before mopping. A two-vacuum solution may be better for people with mixed floor surfaces in many cases. There are likely cheaper stick vacs that perform as well as the Dyson these days. But one feature that can't be understated is a detect light so that you're not missing spots. It's also satisfying in an OCD sort of way.

Here's my take ... A vacuum cleaner has only a few necessary parts: a rolling brush to agitate carpet and loosen dirt/dust, a motor to drive that brush and suck up the dirt/dust as it loosens, and a bag/bin to contain the mess. I think some specialized attachments (such as crevice tools, extensions, and handheld brushes) are nice, but anything else is unnecessary. I have a 2400sf home. The entire upstairs is carpeted, and we have two large area rugs on the hardwood downstairs. I vacuum the rugs weekly and the upstairs monthly. We also have two dogs, one that sheds and one that doesn't. They stay downstairs :) I've made it through the last 20 years with two identical vacuums, both the exact same model: The Hoover Tempo Widepath. When I purchased the first one, I bought some extra belts and bags on Amazon. Those are the only parts of the vacuum that need replacement somewhat regularly, and I can do both on my own with just a Phillips-head screwdriver in about 10 minutes. To replace the belt, the brush must be removed, so I'll clean that up with each belt replacement. In 20 years, I think I've spent less than $300 on all that (<$100 for the vacuum new x2, $12 for 9 bags, $6 for 2 belts). The first one was ruined when some contractors used it to clean up a drywall demo job :( The second one is still going strong. I think the simplicity and ease of maintenance have made this a setup I'm very happy with. On a Black Friday a few years ago, we purchased a cordless Shark stick vacuum to clean our cars and rugs without having to get out the big vacuum. So, the Hoover doesn't do most of the weekly tidying anymore.

Co-sign. We got a Hoover in 2010 (I think it's a bagged WindTunnel) and it's still goin' strong. Vacuum shops will service them and give them tune-ups. When we took ours in to be serviced (it was something really minor), the guy literally said, "They don't make them like this anymore" and that this would outlast all the sharks and dysons etc. they are selling these days.

I’ve used the Hoover Windtunnel, then the Dyson Ball Animal 2, before finally settling on the Sebo X 7 Premium. It’s the best vacuum cleaner I’ve ever owned, and it’s my final upright for the foreseeable future.

We have hard surfaces on 1st & 2nd floors, Our Dyson stick V8 & V10 (one per floor, oldest is like 8 years?) is great for those; but I'd never rely on it for carpets. For that I have a 25 year old Hoover Windyunnel bagged that is repairable and running well.

I still have a Hoover Windtunnel from 2001 or 2002 I think. I haven’t been using it much because I need to replace some bearings. Those things were incredible, and this is coming from a guy who never thought he’d be the least bit interested or excited about a vacuum cleaner.

We started getting problems with moths after using cordless for a few years so we bought a corded Hoover upright. As a test I vacuumed a large bedroom with the dyson cordless and then used the new corded upright on the same room. I filled up the container 1.5 times. One room! Ditched the cordless now. Considering their price too they just don’t perform.
