We've had the dcl180zb for over 5 years now and wife always has been happy with it. Recently our little one broke it (put little plastic balls inside it somehow and started smoking) and we ordered exactly the same model.

We use it at home and the house it's pretty clean maybe that's why 😁.

I have 2 of these 18v models, the dcl 184 and the handheld dcl 284. The best of them is the handheld dcl284, it has good power, enough accessories, etc. I also have the Bosch that is 20v that has a double cyclone and is much more powerful but it does require frequent cleaning of the filter

What do you want to achieve? I have 2 Makita and for home use I do not recommend any Makita that makes workshop and work machines. For home maybe the dcl180 and I don't see it as the best option there, maybe a dyson or something more comfortable

I have the one I told you about that is made of wood and it does work but it is not that powerful. Definitely look for something cable or a dyson

I'm not recommending any particular model, only that if you do have one, the cyclone adapter makes a huge difference. I use the cheapest, crappiest, weakest and oldest stick vac Makita makes, the DCL180 (had for 7 years), essentially every single day to clean up in the house on a hard floor, and I honestly find it ok. Not great, but ok, but it was almost unusable without the cyclone. Using the HEPA filter on it is pretty hopeless, it really does not have the suction for it, so I just use the standard cloth filter and coarse mesh filter. I also have a DCL281FZCB, that's the DCL281 with the cyclone adapter included, but I barely ever use it because the noise from the motor is so high pitched and horrible compared the old brushed DCL180, so it gets used elsewhere.

The 180/181/182 are basically the same, just different switch designs. It's fine for quick cleanups in the kitchen, but it's not that powerful. There's a cyclone attachment you can get for it that makes it work better and doesn't clog up the filter as fast, but it adds girth to the whole unit and it's pretty shit anyway because it's friction fit attachment. It doesn't attach too tightly so eventually it works itself loose and falls off while you're vacuuming. The low tech solution is to duct tape around the pipe so that it's a tighter fit. Don't need to tape both parts together. Pony up for the 280/282/284/286 brushless and you'll be much happier in the long run I only got my 180 from a Christmas sale deal last year because I didn't feel like spending too much money on it. I kind of regret that choice. Don't make that mistake I did

I tend to use an 18v makita stick/handheld vac.Decent suction, good for the car/skirtings,silly little kitchen spills, top of cabinets, spider webs!etc. But I have loads of their batteries, tools etc.So the bare tools aren't usually that expensive and usually good quality.

I tried the "New LXT" next to the XGT before buying. The XGT has a considerably less annoying sound profile... this is way more significant than it sounds, especially for wife/gf approval factor The LXT is kinda whiny and annoying sounding. According to your numbers, the XGT has 17% higher suction and 20% higher airflow. In practice I did find this extra power significant. u/trickster2, you say Dyson is better but I dont agree. (I DO have a Dyson v11), the power head fell apart after a year and if you are using it on high the battery lasts a pitiful \~6-8min then takes forever to charge. (and the battery & motor are unreliable POS, requried several replacements) With the Makita you can cycle batteries and clean continuously. In practice I have several batteries but only need to cycle 2 for vacuum use.

I have both Makita 12V and 18V vacuums. They are awesome, especially if you already own other Maktia cordless products.
