Miele and Sebo are the best for typical household vacuums, but if you don’t mind the noice you can also consider a shop vac. They are well respected on the construction vacuum market.
I suggest the Costco guard l1 cat and dog plus , it’s $499 though but comes with both a good hard floor tool and a turbo brushed Depending on how much area rug you have you and how thick the pile is the c3 limited edition at $449 right now is also a great deal In Canada they all come with 5 year warranty parts and labour
We've tried Dyson and Sharks but they're so hard on our carpets and rugs so we went with the Mieli Pro. It's a canister vac so whereas it does take up more space than upright and stick vacs, it's relatively maneuverable. What we like the most is that you can reach high up for vents, fixtures, ceilings and low/deep (under sofas, beds) with relative ease. You can also change the height of the beater brush for different length floors (hard vs low pile carpet vs high pile rug) and you can even turn the beater brush off if you have hand-woven or otherwise delicate rugs. You can even change the suction power depending on if you're doing floors or drapes or furniture.
Oh! And these things are made to be repaired. They use hard rubber parts that are standardized across the line so you don't have to just toss it out after 3-5 years.
Miele yes. Dyson no. I have a european market 240V that I run in the US on a NEMA 6-15 outlet. Love that setup. We initially did it because 20 years ago Miele were dirt cheap in europe. Since then I have found a few US spec Miele in the trash, and several of them have been repurposed for friends and such. They are solid machines and if you want to do serious work the corded model is what you want.
I pull vacuums from the trash all the time. I used to do Dyson uprights, often they would just need a belt and a clean and they were goo to sell. I have done some Dyson cordless sticks, they are OK for light use, but not at all BIFL. I have found 4 or 5 Mieles over the years, some with damage or whatever. I cleaned up and fixed and a bunch of them and either sold them or given them away. They work well, are nicely deisgned, there is parts availability. Change the filter and bag often enough and they perform great. Compact size is a plus also.
A VAX has been the best of the bunch here, so far, better than Bosch (an all-round failure) or Dyson (motor longevity). Yet to try a Shark. Regular maintenance is vital, given the lower suction power of battery models, I've found. None are as good in handling larger pieces of dirt as my corded, bagged, Miele cylinder, and the increased suction power means fewer tool changes for corners, etc. So, if you can find the space for one... I even keep the VAX stick running all the way back to the cupboard to reduce spillage, then use the Miele once in a while to clean out the cupboard :-D
Corded, bagged cylinder Miele. Wouldn't touch anything else.
