The U1 is a significant step up from your bagless model. I have a used U1 and use it for our carpeted bedrooms on the upper level. The brush roll, bags, filters and attachments are all readily available.

The Henry is going to be more durable and reliable, although Miele aren’t bad in that front, they have become more fragile recently. Spare parts and bags are more expensive. In the UK, a Henry like this can be had from £100, which makes the argument for it far easier. Miele tend to be far more complicated to repair than a Henry or Sebo which are both derived from the commercial sector.

Not compared to anything Numatic or Sebo which are by their design, serviceable. I can only speak from experience but the S7 upright Miele did a few years ago was the most complicated vacuum I have ever worked on, including modern dysons. Horribly complex.

When I was shopping for my own pet vacuum, I actually asked my vet if he had any particular recommendations. He told me to go for a model that has “pet” right in name, but couldn’t help more than that. I ended up find [reddit user's comparsion research ](https://www.reddit.com/user/lacking_foyer48/comments/1lj76h3/vacuum_cleaners_compared_comprehensive_datasheet/) to be extraordinarily beneficial. You can sort through all the options out there by brand, type, attachments, and more. I ended up going with the Miele brand because I needed something that would be easily carried up and down stairs, and my old upright felt cumbersome.

For $50, and if it’s clean, I’d probably jump on it. It’s a much better cleaner than anything else for $50, and is a step up from your Hoover. However the U1 is discontinued, and trying to find a recline lever to replace my broken one was time consuming and expensive. And there was another part missing so mine still didn’t recline perfectly after dropping $$ on parts. Miele seems to have stopped making parts so they have to taken from donor vacuums. And this vacuum is a bear to disassemble, it seems it was made only for service centers to take apart. So heads up.  But if it’s in good shape and working, I think it would be worthwhile upgrade for a few years!

Miele U1. The amount of features and the quality that machine offered for it's price was IMO one of the best values on the vacuum cleaner market. Started at $399, right in Dyson and higher tier Shark territory, and for that you got a very well made German bagged upright vacuum with sealed filtration, a separate brush roll motor allowing you to properly clean hard floors, a nice onboard stretch hose with an aluminum wand, access to Miele's very good attachment ecosystem, and the swivel neck design making it very maneuverable for its size/weight. I have a Cat & Dog variant and it's my favorite upright vacuum. I swear half the people who come in here looking for machines a U1 would be perfect for their needs and budget if it was still sold. Why Miele discounted it is baffling to me as it seems like it was a fairly popular machine especially in the upright-oriented U.S market. The other would be the Riccar 8000 series/Simplicity 7 series and the Hoover Windtunnel Max bagged (the red/burgundy variant) for similar reasons to the U1: they were good quality bagged vacuums that offered dual floor cleaning ability at a very good price in their respective tiers.

I got mine off Goodwill's auction website almost 2 years ago for not as cheap BUT I swear it must've been used maybe a handful of times if that: its absolutely immaculate. It's a later model too (2018). The bag with the manual and turbo brush was unopened and it also included about 16 genuine bags so I'm set there! lol. I swapped the charcoal filter out for a HEPA and it's my go to upright. I'm a collector so I have several machines as well and while I favor canisters anymore because I have 50/50 carpet/hard floor the U1 is such a wonderful all around package that can do all the cleaning anyone would ever need. It's one machine I'll absolutely never get rid of, with the only exception to that being if I ever found a either a S7580 Swing or a late model U1 Homecare still new in the box haha!

I would only consider corded and bagged. I am repairing my (now discontinued) Miele Dynamic U1, I like it so much and am not sure what else in the current market compares. It just needs a new power cord so should be an easy fix.

Oh yeah the Miele upright is bulky and heavy. When people ask for a lightweight vacuum my first thought is an Oreck. They're 9-10 lbs and good on carpets. Not great on hard floors and they can be loud. Also no hose or tools. I think you should check out the Kenmore Intuition$150-180. It's a small lightweight upright vacuum. It's as narrow as a stick vacuum. It uses hepa bags and a hepa filter. Most of the models have liftaway. The Intuition BU3040 does not have liftaway and it's 12 lbs. The models with liftawa are 14 lbs. Downsides are a short hose. The Simplicity S60 Spiffy $129 is a small bagless upright stick vacuum. It has a hepa filter but it isn't a sealed vacuum. It has no brushroll so it avoids all hair wrap. It's great for hard floors and does pretty well light cleaning carpet for a vacuum without a brushroll. I'd use your Miele to deep clean the carpets every 1-2 weeks. Downsides are it has no hose and the crevice tool isn't easy to use. Also you'll need to wash the primary filters regularly. Thoughts?

That's definitely just a you thing. I've compared a few of the modern dysons, lg cord zero, and Samsung jet vacuums and they don't hold a candle to a Miele even on the cordless vacuums highest setting. None of the cordless vacuums have ever sucked up stuff beyond their cleaning path like my c3 or u1 have

I love love love my U1. Got if for $10 used as it was clogged. The brushroll motor needs to be replaced now, so it’s in storage currently, but it was my daily driver for 2 years and I have well over 50 vacuums. The true auto-adjustment, motor speed adjustment, ease of use, LED lights, attachments, all just perfect. Bags and filters are expensive though, and it could have been more sturdy.

I’m a collector too, I have at least 60 machines and have used a couple hundred in the past, and nothing beats my overall scoring of those Miele uprights for mixed flooring like I have. It is a NIGHTMARE to take apart to the motor though. I had to do it to clean out the fan on mine since it was a little noisier than it should have been. There is this pivoting gear thing that you have to line up perfectly or else it won’t recline properly. It took me hours to get it back together. But when it’s working, it’s my favorite to actually use.

My recomendations would be to get a compact bagged canister vacuums. they are very light weight, easy to use and have far better suction than any of the stick vacuums. If you really want something similar to a stick vacuum, get a sebo dart, or sebo felix, or miele upright. U wont miss with both of these brands.

Agreed, We've had 2 Miele uprights for over 10 years now. They stand up so well that if you put either 1 side by side blindfolded with a brand new one, I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference if possible at all. Their suction is fantastic and easily as good or better than our old Rickar, which at the time they told us had the best suction of all the vacuums available. Actually, there was 1 problem..... our housekeeper vacuumed our entire house without a bag. I found the bag compart maybe 1/10th full and cleaned it out entirely, dismantled and cleaned all the ducts and vaccuumed every bit of fine dust I couldn,t shake or wipe out. A few weeks later, the primary motor started making a realy high pitch noise like a bearing starting to go. I took it in immediately to the local hole in the wall vaccuum guru. Get this, Miele sent out an entire new $400 motor and paid the shops install/cleaning fee, as a courtesy for free, saying it's still under the 10 year warranty and to be careful(this reset the warranty on the new motor too. That's above and beyond compassion and customer service if you ask me. I doubt from talking to other owners that have had their Miele vacuums (and other products)that I'll ever "need" to buy another vaccumm. Their built like a tank, steering is smooth and tight like a sports car and vaccuum under anything the bottom fits under with the upright part able to be reclined to almost on the floor before it lifts the front up a little bit. Miele, for us is a Buy It Once Buy It For Life Appliance and if God forbid it was stolen or destroyed by an act of God, we'd buy one again in a heart beat.

I have a Miele upright and HATE it for my home. Also had a canister that was beyond infuriating to use in the house. I have a Henry that I use for basement and to clean my cars. I don’t understand how anyone can tolerate a canister machine in the house. It’s like taking an overweight cat for a walk with the added bonus of cracking corner beads on walls. I actually just ordered a shark not 10 minutes ago to replace my Miele for home use. I’ll take it to work where it’ll probably do better. Miele designed the brush roll in a very poor way. We don’t have carpet, just a few runner and if you don’t constantly have the brush roll running hair will bind up in the belt drive system and start to strip out the belt. I’ve replaced countless belts, the entire housing and the motor when my kids didn’t realize what was going on with the god awful sound it was making. I contacted them about it and their solution? Take it apart and clean it after every use. Are you kidding me? That involves pulling the bottom plate off (6 torx screws of 2 sizes) unclipping a flimsy plastic latch on the belt housing that has about 10 uses before it breaks and if it’s bad enough unmounting the motor. That is in no way feasible to do daily or at times several times daily depending on how anal I get. I salvaged a Shark 2 years ago from the trash, pulled it apart and cleaned the heck out of it. And it’s used in the finished portion of our basement several times a week. It’s been great. I like the general quality of the Miele and the design of how the rotator head works is great. But gosh they missed the mark on overall design. To further take points off it’s very very very unfriendly for repair. People like to say the higher end machines are repairable. Ok… I guess. But when I’m shelling out nearly $100 on a replacement hose every 3 years in addition to belts, and brush rolls I can just buy a “disposable” one every few years and when it breaks I can usually hobble it by for another few. This is my 3rd Miele and probably my last to be honest. My first served me fairly well in a house with carpet until it took a fall down the steps when my wife lost grip on it (because let’s face it they aren’t light). The cost to fix it was going to be more than it cost new. And that was just in parts for me to do it. Rant over. Sorry. Just read this at the wrong (right?) time.

Unfortunately I think it depends on the carpet. I used to have a cheap pet Vax vacuum and it did an excellent job. Then I moved to a house with thick cheap carpet that was full of static and everything stuck to it. I ended up getting the pet meile but it was was still a lot of effort. The turbo head is good and sometimes I used the wood floor head instead as the brush dislodged fur from the carpet. It could be worth looking into one of those steam clean vacuums? Good luck

Have you tried washing or replacing the filter? We actually went from a Miele for pets to a Dyson and it's miles better. Have had it for a few years now and the suction hasn't really gone down at all. We just rinse the filter every couple of weeks, it's amazing how much crap comes out. Takes forever to dry properly though. With regards to scratching the floors I think it's just a case of making sure to use the right attachment and position on the brushes?

Could you do a similar comparison for mattresses, please? Just a heads-up: Reddit is an international platform, and there’s a significant difference between EU and US vacuum cleaners due to the voltage difference (220V vs 110V). Also, keep in mind that the 2013 Ecodesign regulation limits the maximum power and annual energy consumption of vacuums: 1600W and 62 kWh/year from 2014, and 900W and 43 kWh/year from 2017 onwards. I own both an older and a newer Miele Cat & Dog vacuum. The older model is noticeably more powerful, though both are similar in terms of noise.

Miele is amazing. We got a pet fur specific one last year on an awesome Black Friday sale via Amazon. We have four pets (two dogs and two cats), and three of them are crazy shedders, so I was specifically looking for a good vacuum for fur. This is the best vacuum I've ever had. If you are in the USA and can hold off a month, you might find a great sale for Miele over Thanksgiving weekend. If you are interested in the model we got, let me know and I can look it up. I think we spent about $400-500 USD and it was probably typically an $800 vacuum. ETA: Sorry, I should have mentioned that, in my experience, the pet fur Miele is also great for dust/allergens, which is why I mentioned it!

Thank you for your reply! I did try a corded Miele in 2017, which was allegedly the most powerful vacuum they had at the time (within the 900 W limit, of course). I was not impressed, at least not enough to actually buy it, even though it was much cheaper than they are nowadays. I'm sure they have gotten better over the last 7 years, but by how much? And is it really enough to defend the insane price tag? I understand that this price level is "the new normal", and therefore by definition not "insane" anymore, but still – I'm having a really hard time dishing out all that money without getting something absolute premium in return. And nowadays, I don't.

When they were new to the market, the rep would try and 'sell' it to the staff, but we knew that it was a bunch of malarkey. Miele vacs use bags, yes, but they're clean, easy to replace and suck harder that ...well, that part writes itself. Buy a Miele Also, their claim was 'no loss of suction' like the bag vacs did, but if they bagged models start with 20 and drop to 14, but the Dyson stays perpetually at 10, who has the better unit? Aaaaand also, if there is no loss of suction, but then you fire up an AIR-DRIVEN motor head, you lose suction. It was all a bag of doodoo that a Dyson couldn't even suck up. Marketing will always trump a sucker.

i buy vacuums constantly for work. dyson is hands down the worst value. i'd say i put a 5 year beating on a vacuum in about 6 months. you'll find shark and meile to be the best value at each end of the price point.

I own a cleaning business and have had as many as 3 labs at once and only use a shark pro model.I had a meile for when my daughter lived at home because she was allergic to dogs.If you have anyone with allergies then the Meile is the way to go. If you just want max suction for dog hair get the shark rotator models, not navigator

Love ours. We have the Cat & Dog. There is a learning curve to all the settings but once you get that down, it's pretty painless. It's over ten pounds lighter than our old Orec canister and it fixed the traffic wear patterns in our bedroom carpet. I was going to file a complaint about the carpeting until we got the Meile. Now I know the old Orec wasn't cleaning worth a \*\*\*\*.

Doesn’t exist. If it is powerful, it will work for one month and never the same again. An old royal hotel vac, Electrolux, or meile are what actually work in my experience.
