Don't buy a Makita, but from a vacuum manufacturer. If you want something in a backpack variant try a RSV 150, it's light, quiet and corded (probably not ideal for your environment but if that's what you want then this is probably the best in the category).

They’re really quite cheap / offer excellent value for money in the UK. My mains powered Numatic vacuum was only £150. And the Henry Xtra cylinder machine has just been on offer for about £130.
