So I have a rug similar to this and even my tuned Kirby G4 struggles on it. It’s high pile microfiber shag and air does not flow through it. The few machines I’ve found that do work on it are turbo nozzle canisters and surprisingly, Shark Navigator Lift-Away with the brush on and suction bleed valve open. My Miele H1 with an SEB-236 nozzle does not work, neither does my SEBO Felix or Oreck Classic or XL21 platform. Oreck Magnesium/Discover supposedly does work because it’s very light so the machine doesn’t burry the nozzle. I’ve found you’ll want a lightweight nozzle so it can float on top of the pile. My rug is so thick that height adjustment doesn’t really work. The best way to deep clean these rugs is to flip them over and vacuum the underside with a machine that has lots of agitation and vibration. That will cause the grit to fall onto the floor. Carefully remove the rug and clean up the grit.

Whatever you end up buying, also consider buying a small shop vac from a brand like shop vac or rigid. * Perfect backup for if the upright fails * A small one is perfect for corners and stairs. * They are also wet/dry which will come in handy when you have a spill or a flood. * They are built like tanks. Practically BIFL. * Relatively cheap. <$50 for a 1-3 gallon model * Unlimited and universal attachments and additions * Optional bag or canister (I suggest bag for dry though) * Swappable filters for different jobs, including HEPA * For a little more you can buy a battery operated one, with good swappable tool batteries instead of built in batteries that fail. ##Besides that: **Overpriced, but worth it** * Miele (if you want top of the line consumer) * Dyson (if you want more attachments and canister style. Mixed reviews, but I have had my DC 65 Animal for 11 years now and the thing is going strong, so long as you do annual maintenance. I bought it because my ex took our DC41.) **Pro Options** * Sebo (Best) * Sanitaire * Riccar * Windsor Versimatic (Best value, it's a rebranded Sebo at half the price) **Lightweight Option** * Orek XL commercial (underrated brand, easily serviceable, very lightweight, relatively quiet, built to last, cons, no hose or attachments, but that's what the shop vac is for)

I used a Shark Rocket when I lived in a 600 square foot cottage for 5 years. It was excellent for that purpose but now that I’m in a 2500+ square foot home I’m back to my Oreck XL21. I wouldn’t trade it for anything and it’s probably 15-20 years old now

> thinking I wanted a Dyson. > > The repair guy set me straight. From what I've seen of Dyson products in general, they sell replacement parts but you won't want to go through with the repairs because of the time and parts cost. > bagged is superior longterm IMO. Oreck Commercial upright traditional corded is the vacuum that impressed me most recently, after having been an Electrolux canister user for much of my life. We used to go out of our way to get the Electrolux bags, and I think that was the thing that people were trying to avoid at one point with the bagless -- getting locked into some particular bags.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The best sub-$300 vacuum is an Oreck Commercial model. Used all day every day in hotels, etc., lasts a lifetime, designed to be repaired, replacement parts available and cheap.

Check out the Oreck XL, better filtration and still in your budget. Bagless machines all leak dust and require more maintenance than bagged models.

We checked some of the hotels that we stayed at and ask housekeeping what vacuum they were given. Based on that, we got the Oreck XL Commercial. We figured that they went through a lot of vacuums and probably got ones that were reliable. It was not expensive. It looks very utilitarian but isn’t heavy. It uses replaceable filter bags instead of weird containers requiring manual cleaning. It’s worked well for us for at least 10 years with no problems.

Oreck XL Commercial. Doesn't have attachments if you require, but it handles a German Shepherd shedding like a mofo. Suction is incredible and it has lasted a bunch of years. Very, very light. While not truly a stick.

Like someone else mentioned, vacuums like Oreck XL or Riccar Supralites are pretty much the best at fluffing up the pile and leaving vacuum lines like that. The reason (I've always assumed, anyway) is because since they're lightweight and have smaller motors, they rely more on the brush agitating the carpet rather than just having boat loads of suction. The result is they actually do a pretty killer job at erasing pet hair and they make those nice carpet lines. These days I would opt for the Riccar Supralite model R10E or R10S(if you can swing it) over the Oreck. It's going to be a lot more serviceable. The Riccar will also run circles around an Oreck if the carpet isn't super low pile. Barely anyone deals with Oreck anymore but Riccar is pretty ubiquitous at vacuum stores.

I’m curious to see where this post goes. I’ve got a sensor S12 in one house and an old oreck XL in the other. The Oreck is loud as hell, but I guess that’s normal for a direct air machine.

Same, 😂. Seriously, pick up a classic used Oreck. They're #1 in hotels and dirt cheap. Bags are $2 each, and you can replace the brush roller and belts in a minute for little money. Around here in Nashville I always see a dozen or so for sale locally for $20 or less and once my Dyson finally kicks the bucket. I might get a couple of them just to have one upstairs and one downstairs.

The most common is the XL. I think all the wear parts and bags are interchangeable between models. Is it the best vacuum? No. But it's super light and cheap and easy to fix. Which is kind of very satisfying. It has a wooden roller brush that goes nice and deep into carpet.

If you are using an hour straight prob need a good capacity bag as well Oreck XL leaves those lines and such and they are a solid unit. Not lightweight to pick up but easy to push around Not super popular on this sub but oreck has been a staple in vacuuming offices and churches

My dad had an Oreck XL. What I loved about it was the versatility on floors. We had hardwood floors in the main living areas with area rugs, and semi shag (med-high pile) carpeting in the bedrooms. It handled all of these floors without complaining. It didn't fling much dust around on the hard floors. Maybe because they were initially used by hotels, which typically have very low pile carpets. I loved that machine. We both collected and repaired vacuums, so dad had a stash of vacuums like a Rainbow, Shark, a vintage Panasonic canister, I always tended to reach for the Oreck. Then I used the Rainbow for the deep/detail cleaning and the things above the floor, but that machine was a cumbersome beast!

We have 4 pets. We have an Oreck XL. Dyson filters have to be cleaned and all that, while my oreck has bags, so basically, no maintenance. You can lift it with one finger until the bag starts to fill, and it takes months before it's full. I use it on the carpet, tile, and vinyl with no problems. Edit: there's no handheld attachment, but we have a handheld that was inexpensive that we use for crevices and whatnot.

The Bissell 3313 is pretty light at 12 lbs. I agree with u/Flat_Direction1452 there aren't many vacuums that are lighter and good at cleaning carpets. You could try an Oreck XL. They're lighter. New ones are around $150-170 but you can find many used Orecks for $50 or less. They don't have any hose or tools. There's the Vacmaster UB0402 $111. It's a copy-cat of an Oreck XL but actually has a few improvements like led headlights, hepa bags standard, and a 2 speed switch. I don't recommend a cordless stick vacuum. They don't deep clean carpets and since you hold the bin, battery, and motor at the top the handle weight is actually heavier than an upright vacuum.

The Oreck Commercial XL is ok. It's lightweight and good on low to medium carpets. Like you said no hose and no tools. They do last a long time but the Commercial XL has the old bag dock, so you'll need to install one of the new bag docks so it can use the hepa. I'd choose the Karcher Ranger over the Oreck Commercial XL. You can find the Ranger for $199-212. The Ranger has carpet height adjustment. You won't need to change any bag dock and it has a lifetime belt. The Ranger is made by Sebo and it will have the best reliability among these options. I'd also choose the Sanitaire Professional Tradition SL635B $159 over the Oreck Commerical XL. The Sanitaire has carpet height adjustment. There are F&G Hepa bags available. You can get to the belt and brushroll without any tools. If you are willing to trade a little reliability for features I'd highly consider the Sanitaire Professional SL4110A $159. It's a traditional upright vacuum. It has carpet height adjustment. Generic hepa bags are available. What sets it apart from the Oreck is it has a hose and tools. I'd choose either the Karcher Ranger or either of the Sanitaires over the Oreck. What do you think?

For a light weight bagged vacuum to clean carpets I think of the Oreck vacuums. They're light weight around 9-10 lbs, they have large hepa bags, and they're pretty good on carpets. They don't have any hose or tools. The non-swivel models actually put less stress on your arms and back then swivel steering because the swivel you have to control and stabilize your arm to steer it. The Oreck XL is outdated, the Oreck Elevate series is improved. The Oreck Hepa $299 on amazon is the same as the Oreck Elevate Command but with a shorter warranty. The Karcher Ranger $212 is a new take on the Oreck from an established German brand. The Ranger is made by Sebo it's also a lightweight upright vacuum with no hose or tools. But the Ranger has carpet height adjsutment which Orecks never have had. The Ranger also has a liftetime belt and belt protection and the brushroll is removable without any tools like the Sebo Felix. Downsides are an odd foot power switch. There's also a much cheaper copy of Oreck the Vacmaster UB0402 Commercial Vacuum Cleaner $109. I have never used one and it looks to be better than the old Oreck XL but it's still built to a price to be affordable. The Kenmore Intuition is a small lightweight vacuum but the swivel steering might make the handling more stressful. I'd try a Karcher Ranger first and the Oreck Hepa second. There are lots of used Oreck XLs out there but it uses stretch belts and the old bag dock, I'd try to find the newer Oreck Elevate models on the used market.

Orecks are lightweight vacuums that are made for low to medium pile carpets. They aren't very good on hard floors because the brushroll is always spinning and it will fling stuff backwards. They have no hose or tools. They're pretty simple vacuums that are not too hard to repair. If you just want a vacuum for carpets they are very light to use. If you get a used Oreck you'll probably need a new brushroll, belts, and bags. I'd also upgrade the bag dock so that you can use the purple hepa bags. Since they use stretch belts they will need regular belt replacements around 2-4 belts a year depending on use. This Oreck XL looks clean and $10 is almost free. So as long as you only need it for carpets and you are willing to buy the needed parts it's a good deal.

Depends on your budget really. My fave was an upright Orek, when that died after 10 years of cleaning up after five cats. I then got a Miele which again lasted a long time (about 12 or 13 years). Got rid of a Dyson after six months - useless! And still are... At the moment I am using a Henry Quick Pet combined with a Roomba I7. The robot does surprisingly well on our rugs and hard floors.

My upright Oreck vacuum cleaner has finally bitten the dust. Until I decide what to purchase next I am looking to rent an upright vacuum cleaner; not a carpet cleaning machine. And not something for construction work, just an ordinary residential vacuum cleaner. Has anyone heard of this or am I just out of luck? Thanks for any input😎

Thank you I will look into that. I had a bad experience with Dyson - to me it was a piece of junk; only lasted a year. I really liked my two Orecks. In my dreams I want a really powerful robot vacuum but I don’t know if such a thing exists. They seem to be made for hard floors.🙄

I have had my Oreck serviced 4 or 5 times Day Cin Vacuums. They are great. But at some point I have purchased a new vacuum in service fees.😊 I like upright vacuums but as I get older it’s harder to use it on my two flights of stairs 😹. Bought a Dyson stick vac a couple years ago - big mistake. They are not meant for people with carpets or pets and I have both.

My parents lost me borrow a oreck bag Vacuum that's been in our family as, long as I can remember when I bought my house. A couple years ago I found a Dyson dc14 at a yard says for $20, replaced the clutch and it "worked" but never well, but I just properly cleaned the rollers of all the hair again, unclogged the small hose from the shroud to the ret of the unit, and it's sucking like a dream now. I've never pulled this much dust out of my rugs in my life and now I want to puke. Anyway, moral of the story is use what you have, and fix what breaks. Searching for used Dyson is a great option. Also rtings.com started doing vacuum reviews and I highly recommend rtings the anything they write.
