get it throw a belt on it and use it for 10 years
Thank you! After this comment I decided to go for it. The belt looks good (they must have replaced it at some point) and the vacuum works pretty well. I just spent the last hour cleaning the house without worrying about a battery running out or emptying the canister every 5 minutes (I was using a Dyson V8 previously). It also came with the original manual and 19(!) bags, so I should be set for a while.
Great vac in it's day, great for a collector, but that vac is over 30 years old and I wouldn't really advice someone buy it as a regular workhorse. How handy are you at doing maintainence and repair? It'll need a new belt and clean up at minimum. Other parts aren't avaliable for these anymore either so if something is missing, broken, or worn you might be out of luck.
I bought a Panasonic upright bag vacuum about 15 years ago from Amazon. It has an automatic cord reel, picks up every and because my wife has bad allergies, I needed something with a HEPA filter and the bag vacuum really outclasses our Dyson Ball Animal. The Dyson ball gets used when we vacuum out the cars. The Panasonic replaced the Dyson and cost less than half the price.
Miele or Sebo. I have a Panasonic upright that has been going strong for 14ish years, that's pretty good too.
Henry. He just does the job perfectly and looks all cute and smiley as he does it. Honorable mention to Panasonic, though. I had one and it was just the best. Nothing fancy, just a regular upright vaccuum. But a great machine.
Wow! Very nice! This was a golden age of these Panasonic upright vacuum cleaners. They were light, powerful, and super easy to use and service. Bags and belts are still available, as they take a generic belt size and HEPA bags for Kenmore uprights (the Panasonic designs) can fit in this era of Panasonic upright. It does have some age on it, so be mindful of any noises or vibrations that seem abnormal. When in doubt, get it checked at a local vacuum cleaner shop. Most will be more than willing to look at this unit. I would love to see a customer bring one of these for service.
