"You need raw power to effectively clean a rug like that. Sebo G-series upright. Riccar upright. Etc. ... Almost any premium level upright will accomplish this task without issue."
"Literally one of the best household tools I’ve ever used. ... QOL improvement over the vacuums I grew up with was night and day."

Riccar r10e wife loves it with our 2 huskies, works great on carpet and out vinyl plank, I own a vacuum store and this is her fav
I own a vac store and my wife loves riccar r10e , we have 2 huskies
No, it spins like mad we use it on. Our luxury vinyl works great most flooring is very durable and the bottom does pop off for cleaning the brush roll.
yes I use riccar lightweights at home
I assume the two kids are toddlers, not yet old enough to assist in cleaning chores. The Riccar Supralite weighs 8 pounds and is a bagged model. It's a basic model though so no attachments. Is a visit to a vacuum store an option? If yes, take the time to explain your preferences and challenges then try out the lightweight uprights from Riccar, or the Sebo Felix. Then try the canister models to see if pushing the wand and power nozzle will work for you.
Sounds like most of your surfaces are hardwood vs carpet. If the carpet is low pile, you might be able to get a suction-only machine with a turbo floor tool. I recommend limiting your search to bagged models, none of the bagless models will provide the HEPA filtration you need. Are you in or near a city that has a vacuum dealer? If yes, they will assess your needs and work with you (discounts, demonstrations, etc.), its possible to get an entry level upright or canister in your budget and HEPA needs (Riccar Superlite, Miele C1). Most dealers have used models they refurbished at deep discounts from new/MSRP and have HEPA technology. Riccar, Filter Queen, Rainbow, Kirby, Sebo, Miele U1 and many others will meet your budget as a refurbished option.
For your office I would recommend something like the Riccar Supralite Entry Upright Vacuum R10E. More than sufficient for hard floors and is certainly a better machine than your Oreck.
Classic that’s been around for 20+ years with minimal changes. It’s going to clean carpet with the best of them and last you a really long time with little maintenance Update. I did not realize what thread this was and want to add that even though the r10e can use a hepa bag, it is not the best for filtration. It is a workhorse though and that’s what I was trying to state in this reply.
Yeah, when I moved to another state last year I left the $80 upright with my roommate because she has carpet and my new house doesn’t. And that meant I could justify buying a new Riccar canister. They’re both quiet and lightweight, easy to maneuver. And yes, the new canister was $$$.
If you can only buy one vacuum right now, get a canister. Sticks are convenient, but they don’t clean as well as a canister or upright (more of a concern for carpet than the hardwood). Years ago I bought a refurbished Riccar upright off eBay for $80 and it’s still going. If you don’t need one RIGHT NOW, definitely look for a refurbished Miele or Riccar.
In the world of vacuum cleaners, buy a Riccar and the money stays in the US.
Taiwan, but the R10 series is partially made and fully assembled in MO. Riccar is constantly trying to move more manufacturing and assembly to US. At least the $ stays in US.
See a local dealer. If they are too far, check Riccar on the web then hit me back. Riccar is best by far. BAGGED ONLY.
No cordless, no bag less. Riccar makes the best. All with warranty over a year. Great quality. Last forever plus decades.
Riccar? That’s in my top 3.
Real vacuum dealerships will not sell Dyson any longer. Many other traditional brands either because those companies have decided to produce in Asia and change designs super fast. It is the OPPOSITE of sustainability, it is planned obsolescence at an incredible level. Vacs should not be bought online and a big box stores, these machines do not clean carpet/air, are designed to fail, can’t be serviced and are literal fire hazards. Man the stories I can tell you about “brand new” machines. Most were manufactured years before they reached the consumer. CAVEAT EMPTOR. Dealerships sell quality machines, built to last, serviceable, at great competitive prices, with warranties that do not cost extra. You can’t find service like that anywhere! Find a dealer and buy Riccar or Sebo.
Never consider Shark. Bagged is best. Riccar is top of the line if you’re willing to spend. See a local dealer.
I speak from experience. I experience many vacs daily. Bagless all leak. The brush rolls are weak at best. Shark puts out models with no or very little support. The bagless vacs are designed to be replaced in 5 years. Bagged especially Riccar and Sebo are designed to last 20 years and create a MUCH cleaner space than any bagless. Shark and all bagless can afford advertising and reviews because it costs nothing to make the trash they sell. See a local dealer, learn what it takes to be a real vacuum.
Big fan of the riccar supralite. I’ll take that and an old school elctrolux any day.
If you don’t need a hose the Ricaar super lights are pretty good. We have 7 of them in service for about 3 years now.
Riccar Supralite and a Mighty mite is all you need. Depending on where you are Quaility Sewing and vacuum or Redmond Vacuum. Jonathan at Redmond is one of my favorite people. Use to work at Issaquah Sewing and vacuum 25+ years cleaning professionally
I love my Riccar Supralite for carpet and a Mighty mite for everything else
A supralite Riccar for carpet and a mighty mite for everything else. Miele is expensive and the canister is uncooperative.
Sorry but I dont think such a thing exists. In 25+ years of cleaning. In fairness hardwood floors aren't what they use to be. I love my Riccar Supralite for carpet. You need a good brush roll for carpets. That would scratch a hardwood floor and throw everything around. Actually had it happen years ago. For every thing else I use a Mighty Mite. With the softest floor brush they make on all hard surface floors. Also great for cobwebs and dusting walls.
I have a few ideas, I think an upright might be simpler because there is no canister to maneuver and there is no floor head to change. I think a bagged vacuum is simpler because you don't have to remember to empty it after each use and put all the filters back in. Many expensive vacuums won't close if they don't have a bag. A vacuum with no height adjustment is also one less thing to switch. I really like the Sebo Dart $649 because it's a durable vacuum has strong suction. The Sebo Felix swivels and has a suction slider so that might add complication. The Sebo Dart does not swivel and it just has an on/off switch. It looks very minimal which might reduce the visual stimulation. One downside is the brushroll switch is on the powerhead. You won't hurt the vacuum by having the brushroll on hard floors but it may fling stuff behind it. It also is top heavy and has a short hose. Simplicity S26 Allergy Upright $349, this is a new cheaper version of the Riccar R25/R27. It is an upright vacuum with less bells and whistles than the Riccar versions. It has no height adjustment knob. The one switch turns the vacuums on for carpet or hard floors (turns the brushroll off). Similarly you won't damage the vacuum if you use the carpet mode on hard floors or the hard floor mode on carpets. Oreck Elevate Command $499, this is a super lightweight upright vacuum. This version has no swivel steering and that makes it simpler to control. It has a simple 2 speed switch on the handle. The low speed is for hard floors and the high speed is for carpets. It won't hurt the vacuum if used on either speed and flooring. The biggest downside is it has no hose or tools. This makes the vacuum very simple but if you do need a hose and tools you'll need a small canister or cordless vacuum. The Oreck Hepa Upright Vacuum Cleaner $369 is the same vacuum on amazon but with a shorter warranty. The Riccar Supralite is a similar simple lightweight vacuum, it's more expensive but might be worth it if you don't have Orecks near you. Local vacuum stores sell all three of these brands, Sebo, Simplicity/Riccar, and Oreck. I highly recommend you and your wife try these in person first, they all move and feel very different. If you don't need a hose on the vacuum I think the Oreck Elevate Command will be refreshingly simple and easy to use. The Sebo Dart would be my first choice because of its higher durability and I like to have a hose and tools available. Thoughts?
