We just got a Shark Cordless Pet Pro (or similar maybe slightly less model) with a self-empty base and charging station. It has made a HUGE difference for us in being able to vacuum frequently and easily. The vacuum lives on the base so it is always charged and the self empty is so helpful in keeping things contained. Also the brush roll doesn’t get caught up/tangled with hair.

If you were to purchase one of these (which I wouldn’t recommend) it would be either the $149 one or the $175 one.
Personally I would stretch to something like a shark power pro which should be under $300 on special although you will have to compromise on bin capacity.
I love my Shark Pet Plus. I used to have a Dyson (don't remember which model) but it was always clogging up, so I decided to try a Shark. Easy to empty and does a great job on both carpet and hard wood.
I have recommended it to several people, who have also purchased. I think my only complaint is it is little large and heavy for carpeted stairs, so I have a cheap-o, lightweight stick vacuum for that.
Another thing I just remembered that I love about the Shark is the light on the front. I actually often vacuum in the dark lol because it highlights the dirt and dust that you can't see in normal light.
