I got the Shark Detect Pro cordless and it actually works. I was skeptical too, but you can genuinely hear it ramp up when it hits my rugs vs. hardwood. I'm lazy so not having to mess with settings constantly is a huge win. Picks up my hair/fur without issue and the battery life is good too.
I had a Dyson. I did have it for about ten years and two battery changes. So actually not bad at all, but it became unusable recently so I bought a shark. I have one of the ‘pro detect’ ones. I think I got it for about £250 on sale. It’s a bit more clunky and heavy than the Dyson, and for some ridiculous reason they’ve made the head unit too big to go under beds (???) However I am still happy with it cos it really does pick up so much dust/dirt. I am havin renovation done so to avoid ruining the shark I go round with the classic Henry first to get all the rubble and big bits, it’s actually crazy how much more the shark picks up even though I’ve just vacuumed
Shark Detect Pro or Dyson V8 (Fluffy head) are solid picks. No beater bar, good for hard floors. Both usually in that price range if on sale. EU stockists have ’em!
We just got this from Amazon about two months ago. It seems to only work well on low profile carpet. I took a video of it going over and over again on a small pile of pine needles on a tile floor and it picked up nothing. I had just cleaned it all out, as well. Removed hair, cleaned the brush, emptied everything. The other problem I had was the hose keeps getting clogged and its a pain to unclog it. We do have two labs, so there's a lot of hair - but thats why we bought this one! I hate it.
I have the Shark Detect Pro and really like it. I got it for about $250 with a promo code.
This is why I buy one with a long warranty. No product, even the most overengineered or “time-tested” vacuums, will last under every condition. I look for at least five years. A Shark Detect Pro vacuum broke with an electronics error, we called, they did a quick test over video call, and they sent us the upgraded model for free and it arrived the same week. The new one has worked well since. They even let us keep the old one (which is nice for double the accessories, haha). The mixed reviews may be because of how differently people use vacuums; their carpets (or floors), what debris / dirt, ergonomics, cleaning, power, speed, etc. But there certainly are “tiers”, but within one tier, yeah, there’s a lot of trade offs between models. What’s easiest for me: pick 1-3 features you really will regret if your vacuum can’t nail them and then let the rest be easy enough to work around. You can usually buy and return if it misses your expectations.
