I got the be58 go when it was on sale for $99. Supports Merlinwrt. It has a physical network mode switch, I set it to swap between aimesh when is at home vs. wisp when travel. If you already had a Aimesh setup at home then this is a no brainer. Low power, run cool (~54-57c at vertical position and 58~60c when laid flat) and very reliable. One more thing: I tested it with protonvpn wireguard and got ~ 860mbps. This is much faster than Slate 7. So far I have no complain.
I upgraded to a mid-tier Asus RT-BE92U a few months ago. This is a Tri-band router, which I really don't make much use of the 6GHz band other than our cellphones when we are in the same room. Other than one bad FW upgrade it has been solid. Like someone else said, they pack a lot of security features into the router that I was not aware of. They have their own AImesh that let's you add additional units either wired (preferred) or wireless and it has been very easy to setup. I picked up a travel router (RT-BE58 Go) and configured a VPN client on the travel router and server on the home router so that when I am away I can securely use public/hotel internet. A flip of a switch on the travel router and I plug it into my LAN at home to improve coverage in the basement as a mesh point. I have been really pleased. The only issue I had was that using the USB port with a thumb drive to create a cheap NAS really slowed down the router. I caved and got a proper NAS instead.
Spectrum used to provide a modem for no extra charge as a part of the service. But routers are pretty much universal and will work with the cable modem. No need to get a combo modem/router unit. I’ve had good luck with ASUS routers. The ASUS WiFi 7 BE3600 is fairly recent and at a good price.
Asus typically still makes some of the highest performance routers, at least from what I have seen in the last few months. They are also very easy to set up. I bought the ASUS BE3600 a few months ago. Was able to set it up within 10-20 mins and it has performed flawlessly even tucked away in a cabinet under the living room tv
Recently got an Asus BE3600 and it's working great. Had a TP-Link before that and I would say that the Asus app is way better, more intuitive, user friendly.
I picked up an ASUS BE3600 from Best Buy back in February after getting tired of restarting my old router several times a week. I was going out of town to celebrate my Birds winning the Super Bowl so I didn't need my cameras offline while I was away. I haven't needed to restart it even once since I purchase it and I have coverage all over my 1500 sqft home. I do unplug it for a few minutes once a month by choice since that's a good practice.
Basic wifi7 mesh routers form asus handle 100 devices. The gtbe98pro alone can do 200 devices. Im sure the new AI wifi7 router with AFC (incredibly important for 6ghz spectrum which most broadcasting routers and AP have been built without this main feature) can do more.
Why not spring for a new ASUS WIFI 7 router? WIFI 7 is 2-3X faster than WIFI 6.
No really. I am seeing about a 80% increase in speed from WIFI6 to WIFI7.
Buy a ASUS WIFI 7 router and add a Mesh ASUS WIFI7 extender or 2. You can create a ASUS Mesh network, theoretically at 95% of Ethernet speed with modest ping. Cost thru Amazon or Best Buy should be under $400. Good luck!
