Based on 1 year's data from Mar 18, 2026 How it works
I had a $500 TPLINK AXE 16000 high end super crazy router provided by my fiber company, the thing was a piece of garbage and dropped connection for a few seconds every 10 minutes after about a year. Made gaming impossible. I went on Amazon and bought [this $90 WIFI 7 router](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DC99N2T8) and have had zero issues and just as good coverage in my home (1650sqft). It supports mesh, although I've never used it so can't comment there. My main point is that buying the expensive router doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be any better.
Keep looking, I recently snagged a TP-Link axe300 for $175 and I probably won't upgrade again for a very long time. It's not even possible to describe how fast my connection is compared to my Netgear RS100 that I stupidly "upgraded" to. Ping? Good luck measuring it, it floats around 9-13-17ms in our home we bought 2 years ago which is all brick and wood with a standing seam metal roof and a million miles of trash lead conduit and wires from previous owners' remodels. If you designed a stress test for wifi signal you'd stop short of how much of a nightmare my house is because it would seem unrealistic for anyone to deal with and yet this brute SINGS signal throughout my house. Don't settle for good enough, take your time and get the best. I promise there's another fool out there switching to WiFi 7 right now who's about to sell a beast of a router on ebay for a fraction of it's worth and that's your time to shine homie. Best of luck hunting
Based on your OP and previous posts, I am going to taylor my recommendations around that context. Assuming you're going 1G or 2G fiber. Seem to be OK with single point router but yes.....your current one is old enough to get a drivers license next year. Security risk and poor performance too. You do NOT need to look at modem, ONT, etc of any kind. You only need a router/wifi combo or router l/separate AP's or mesh system. Since you current setup is single point...lets start there. If buying new, I would recommend some asus products that are wifi 6 or 7. Lots of options and you can ad hoc a great mesh/ap experience with add on units if needed in the future. You could also go to link but be careful when you select your main unit, they have a couple of competing mesh ecosystems that do not interchange. Used/older/wifi 6 etc i would be all.pver something like a tp link Axe300. 6ghz, tri band, 10gb wan/lan, Spanish combo port, 2 5ghz streams, cheap now, mates well with fiber, etc. Some 6ghz asus fall in this category. I do not really like mesh systems. In my opinion, unless you spend a fortune on really good ones, they have too many compromises. But If you do, i recommend the asus line, the nicer tplinks and some of the eeros. Unfortunately, even some of those brands, newest is not necessarily best.
WiFi 6 has lots of features that deal with congested networks. Very worthwhile. WiFi 6e was worthless to me as you have to very close to the router to achieve the faster speeds. WiFi 7 is still very uncommon. Get another TP- Link router with 8 big external antennas and WiFi 6 (or 6e) and you will be good for quite a while.
I had good experience with AX55 (wifi6), AXE75 (wifi6e) and AXE95 (wifi6e with 2.5G port). AXE95 does provide 2.5g port, but just 1. If your ISP is <= 1G, you can probably use 1G port as WAN and connect 2.5G switch to 2.5G port for 2.5G internal network. My 1000 sqft apartment did fine with a single AX55, was more than enough. Even recently moving to 3000 sqft SFH, AX55 at dead center of the house covered entire house.
I have a tp-link wifi 6e router. Was 100 euro. 2400.mbps connection.
Just get a wifi 6 E router to replace the main router if it isnt already a wifi 6e not sure a dedicated VR router is necessary at all seem to be snake oil sales to me if I'm honest iv got 2.5gig fiber Internet in the UK and I have 1 TP link wifi 6e router that supply's my whole house with no issues I get 1200gig both ways via WiFi on most devices and the full 2.5gig on my desktops that's on ethernet and internal connections for example i use Sunshine & Moonlight to game stream to my living room TV or my bedroom projector and I get the full 2.5gig speed test to my desktop from the tv, projector and my phone that are on wifi Iv uses TP link for years there a good brand I also worked in IT & Telecommunications in the military for 7 years so iv got a good grasp on networking
That's like the best possible router for quest3, I've had mine for a good few months and it's been flawless both with quest3 and galaxy XR. 6ghz band absolutely shits on my previous 700$ ROG AXE11000 despite being like half the price
This specific tp-link absolutely fucks for 6ghz VR streaming, prismXR is also good but only does 5ghz unless they recently released a new one. I have both, as well as a ROG AXE11000 and the tp-link is the winner
