I currently use the BE220 for Wi-Fi 7 purposes. Tho not as a router but as an access point. Performance is good. no MLO aggregation tho (all Wi-Fi 7 routers in the market are not capable of MLO aggregation yet)

The router from the addon would be yours to keep. Sort of instalment plan. Nowadays, the fibre ONT device is not required to return back to the ISP.
Depends on your needs. If you need 6ghz, go for tri-band. If you have supported device (2.5/5/10 GBe) to plug in network cable to the router, then consider the one with those network port. Those router without 2.5GBe port would have capped output of 1gbps

You may consider M1 3mbps plan as it has a lower UP of $65. Early termination clause for M1 is UP rate multiplied by remaining month. Otherwise, go with MyRepublic as their contract price and off-contract price is narrower.
that's straight out misinformation. I'm using a tp-link b220 and all my IoT devices are working. It won't connect to newer bands, but there's an option to set up a 2.4ghz band for IoTs.
Honestly, for that application a simple TP-Link WiFi 7 router would be fine... Like $80-$100 at Walmart for the BE3600... My son has had one in his apartment for months and it's been flawless, has never had to reboot it once. Very avid gamer, PC and every console you can think of made in the last 20 years
Not sure what model you had, but are you certain you weren't trying to set the WAN DNS instead of the DHCP DNS? I've used Pi-Hole with the TP-Link AX1500 and currently TP-Link AXE75 with no such issues.
Additionally, I've set a friend up with a TP-Link BE3600 which also allows for setting the DNS server.
