You are probably right. Common sense isn't that common. I just installed an AXE5400 and it took me a grand total of about 5-10 minutes. They make it REALLY easy. An application directs you step-by-step. It's not like it was before, that's for sure!

It's legit. I'd look into the AXE5400. But yeah, Kevin is not a joke (I thought it was too, lmao)

r/oculusUsing everyones recommendations, for a router, virtual desktop, and some googling on how to properly set it up. I can ACTUALLY Play VR Games and record them at 60fps. Zero Caliber was laggy as balls whenever I tried with just my modem. Thanks all, I can enjoy vr finally :)

r/HomeNetworkingWifi 6E vs Wifi 7 Router Purchase Question - Help appreciated

Hey! If you’re mainly using it for VR right now, the GXE75 (WiFi 6E) is probably your best bet. That dedicated 6GHz band is usually super clean and makes a noticeable difference for PCVR, with less interference and smoother gameplay. Wi-Fi 7 is cool and future-ready, but unless your devices actually support it, you won’t really see a huge jump in performance yet. The BE6500 is solid, but if you’re thinking long-term, maybe hold out for something like the BE550 or whatever comes next,t it might give you better value later... And yeah, your quest will work on WiFi 6. Hope that helps!!

I had good experience with AX55 (wifi6), AXE75 (wifi6e) and AXE95 (wifi6e with 2.5G port). AXE95 does provide 2.5g port, but just 1. If your ISP is <= 1G, you can probably use 1G port as WAN and connect 2.5G switch to 2.5G port for 2.5G internal network. My 1000 sqft apartment did fine with a single AX55, was more than enough. Even recently moving to 3000 sqft SFH, AX55 at dead center of the house covered entire house.

r/OculusQuestWireless PC VR Gaming Pt. 2: Best Routers, Setups, PC Specs
3 months ago

Hi r/OculusQuest For any one wanting to do **Wireless PC VR gaming** on a **Meta Quest 3, 3S, 2, 1, Pro, Pico 4,** or really any VR headset that's capable of it... I'm posting literally every single thing I know in one interlinked resource here on reddit so you don't have to scour the net for bits and pieces. It's 13 parts and covers the major setups, router specs and settings, networks, PC specs and settings. As well as complete guides on Virtual Desktop, Steam Link, Airlink \[working 100%\]. **This is part 2** and is about understanding the **best routers, setups, and PC specs.** It's to help you decide which router to use or buy to setup a high quality, smooth experience every time. I'll post twice each week and link them all at the end of this post so you can find them once they're live. **You don't need to read through every single part.** They're designed as a 'pick a path'. When we hit the end of the 3rd part, I'll tell you when to start skipping ahead based on the setup you have/want. [Start at the first post](https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality/comments/1ov38in/wireless_pc_vr_gaming_pt_1_router_specs_networks/) and you're good. If you have questions about anything wireless PC VR related, feel free to ask at anytime. I hope it helps.. **- VR Headset + Wi-Fi Specs** These are the types of routers you'll need to get the most out of your specific VR headset... **The Quest 1** is a **Wi-Fi '5' headset,** and the max speed \[for VR\] you can get out of Wi-Fi 5 is 866 Mbps when it's connected to a 5 GHz frequency band. So if you have a Quest 1, any Wi-Fi 5 router with 866 Mbps on the 5GHz band is all you need. **The Quest 2, or the Pico 4,** are **Wi-Fi '6' devices,** and so a Wi-Fi 6 router with 1200 Mbps on the 5 GHz band is what you're looking for. For example, we can see online [this ASUS AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 router](https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-wifi-routers/rt-ax1800s/techspec/) has 1200Mbps on the 5 GHz band. It's worth noting here that you should **avoid** any TP-Link or Huawei **Wi-Fi '6'** routers, as they have known issues with wireless VR gaming. [ASUS AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Router 5 GHz Speed](https://preview.redd.it/yzwrl1hs4f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b11c239043a7b390b4a8da7597dc98c213370887) And finally, **the Quest 3, 3s, and Pro** are **Wi-Fi '6e' devices,** so a Wi-Fi 6 router with a 160 Mhz channel bandwidth option on it, and at least 2400 Mbps on the 5 GHz band, or a [Wi-Fi 6e or Wi-Fi 7](https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-axe5400/) router with the additional 6 GHz band on it is what you'll need to get the fastest speeds out of these headsets. [TP-Link AXE5400 \[AXE75\] Wi-Fi 6e Router 6 GHz Speed](https://preview.redd.it/7rorejou4f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee0c408371b811ecdec27129448db5f9f4f47644) All Wi-Fi 6e routers have that 6GHz frequency band, but not all Wi-Fi 7 routers do, so keep that in mind. [VR Headsets + Wi-Fi Specs](https://preview.redd.it/jfp3pd9w4f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b09713ae2665eac1680c256eb4d0c289db9f0f99) The reason I say a Wi-Fi **'6'** router is also fine for these Wi-Fi **'6e'** headsets to get the max speed out of them, is because the Quest 3, 3S, and Pro cap out at 2401 Mbps data transfer speed between your PC and the headset, and you can **get that speed** on a Wi-Fi **'6'** router if it supports **160Mhz wide channels** on it, like an [ASUS AX58U a.k.a AX3000 router.](https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-wifi-routers/rt-ax3000/) I strongly advise against using a 160MHz wide channel on a Wi-Fi 6 router if you live in an apartment or have neighbors close by though, as that 160MHz channel width will pick up way more interference from their Wi-Fi networks, which is bad. In this case, just stick to a narrower 80 MHz wide channel on the 5 GHz band, and just run with a 1200 Mbps connection speed, which we'll get into later. **- Do You Need The 6 GHz Band and Wi-Fi 6e/7 router?** And that's where the 6 GHz frequency band on Wi-Fi '6e' and some Wi-Fi '7' routers really starts to become of benefit. This separate 6 GHz band can be clear of interference from other devices, particularly your neighbors devices, which means a smoother VR gaming experience for you. **But to benefit from the 6 GHz frequency band,** you'll need to fit both **these 2 criteria** at a minimum: * You have a Quest 3, 3S, Quest Pro, or other Wi-Fi 6e VR headset * You have a clear line of sight with nothing between you and the router, so no walls or major obstacles blocking the way. **You'll also need to fit at least one of these 2 criteria as well:** * You live in an apartment block and have neighbors close by * You can't or don't want to get the other Wi-Fi devices in your home, like your flat mates or parents phones, tablets, and TV's, to all switch over to the slower 2.4GHz band, so your VR headset can be the only device using the 5GHz band. If you 'do' fit **both** of the first 2 criteria, **plus** at least 1 of the last 2 criteria, you will benefit from, and I would recommend a Wi-Fi 6e or Wi-Fi 7 router with the additional 6GHz band on it. [When Do You Need Wi-Fi 6e?](https://preview.redd.it/gejfxepy4f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=532fca05c8fe8ff0e483336fcbbe0ff51a4ba55f) If you don't fit that criteria, you can use a Wi-Fi 6 router instead. **- Which Router To Buy** These are the tried and tested routers from the [Virtual Desktop Discord community](https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbjhMbzZFUVdGOXRJdFhyV3B5cmh4Z25UQjZvZ3xBQ3Jtc0tsX2l0V0ZIWVNZTEpuT3l1NWp5VWptRlVWRFFjekg2QlMyMndGbGhyUGRGTmFrd19KVTMtM05VY0N5Ukl0V1FWSnI0TEpGajBtdE9uQ1JHN0VsWExGZ0FCY1pvVkJ0YkdiZ3VtRkROOFRWLWp3SWllOA&q=https%3A%2F%2Fdiscord.com%2Fchannels%2F564087419918483486%2F767976061476405269&v=0LZonD-uzBw) for wireless VR headsets. In one of the help channels, type /routers in the chat, and hit enter to see the most recently updated list. [Virtual Desktop Discord Recommended Routers](https://preview.redd.it/ksruzgj05f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=32fa7d8bacf64b738f07b3deccb309db06a1f10e) In addition to these I can personally recommend for the Quest 1, pretty much any Wi-Fi 5 router. For the Quest 2 or Pico 4, an [ASUS AX1800 a.k.a AX54HP, AX55, or AX56U,](https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-wifi-routers/rt-ax1800s/techspec/) and for the Quest 3, 3S, or Pro, either the [ASUS AX3000 a.k.a AX58U,](https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-wifi-routers/rt-ax3000/) or if you go with Wi-Fi 6e, the [TP-Link AXE5400 a.k.a AXE75.](https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-axe5400/) You should avoid mesh routers, and network switches between your PC and VR router, as well as Wi-Fi 6 routers from TP-Link or Huawei as I mentioned before. And you can of course use any lower spec'd router for any Quest headset and it will work, but you won't get the best results, and that's not what this course is about. Just as importantly, whatever router you are buying or using, make sure the **LAN ports** on it are rated for at least **1 gigabit speeds.** Anything less than that, and you'll want to pick up a new router. To sum all that up, take note of your VR headsets **Wi-Fi standard**, and the **frequency band** that's best for you to get the max speeds, then buy or use a router that has those specs at a minimum. [Which Type of Router to Buy for Each Headset](https://preview.redd.it/1hy1o8725f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2650211f69cab036639544091b905cd1423e0e72) **- Wireless VR Setups** Now you know which type of router to use or buy, from here, there are 7 major setups you can have in your home, and each one depends on how many routers you have, and whether or not you can run cables throughout your house. I'll cover all 7 possible setups now, then show you how to connect them all up in the later sections. **Take note of these setups and pick the one that's right for you,** because from here on out, I'll be telling you when to skip ahead based on your specific setup throughout this course, and **it's important you get this right.** [The 7 Major Setups for Wireless PC VR Gaming](https://preview.redd.it/3ew01gk45f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ca4e3028809e506452147525fd2c8ac72cf333e) **1. Standalone Router** First, there's a standalone router setup. For this setup you'll need to run an ethernet cable from your standalone router, to your gaming PC, or your PC's USB C to ethernet adapter if that's what you're using, to send your VR game and internet access to your PC and wirelessly to your VR headset. If you can't run that cable from your standalone router, then you'll have to go with one of the other setups instead. [Standalone Router Setup](https://preview.redd.it/vxmudeh65f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9061b91c978ca3b339650f63972c9c06840e9356) At this point, if you're using a standalone setup, you can now skip ahead to the 'Recommended PC and Laptop Specs' section of this post. **2. Main Home Router + Dedicated VR Router \[fully cabled/powerline/MOCA\]** Second, you can use a fully cabled dedicated VR router setup, and this is hands down the best setup you can have. For this setup you'll need to run an ethernet cable from your main home router to your dedicated VR router, and another ethernet cable from your dedicated VR router to your PC's ethernet port or PC's [USB C ethernet adapter](https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/computer-accessory/ue300c/) for your VR game and internet access. [Best Dedicated VR Router Setup](https://preview.redd.it/da7daoz75f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=239fd2a76d7f51d2668aca9c967b6b5ad4860edd) If you can't run that cable from your main home router, for example if you're in another room, the other option you have is to use [Powerline](https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/powerline/tl-pa9020p-kit/) or [MOCA](https://www.amazon.com.au/Actiontec-MoCA-Network-Adapter-Ethernet/dp/B088KV2YYL?th=1) adapters. These types of adapters act as an ethernet cable from your main home router to your dedicated VR router, and they only impact your internet speed, because your VR game is handled separately by your dedicated VR router and PC. **Powerline adapters** plug into a wall power socket near your main home router, and then a wall power socket near your dedicated VR router and PC, and they send your internet signal through the electrical wiring in your walls. **MOCA adapters** do a similar thing but with coaxial cable ports in your walls if you have them. These send your internet signal through coaxial cable in your walls that's been **designed for transmitting internet signals,** which is why you can get better results vs Powerline adapters. Make sure that if you use either of these, they are rated for **1 gigabit speeds at a minimum.** [Powerline or MOCA Adapters for Separate Rooms](https://preview.redd.it/oq6dyfz95f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f943b783a262671fcef1d8f6e794e4b5e2031a9) MOCA adapters will add a small amount of latency versus a straight ethernet cable, but can actually be really good. Powerline adapters can have mixed results and almost never reach the advertised speeds as it all depends on the electrical wiring in your home, which wasn't designed for internet signal. And because of that, **before you go out and buy a powerline kit,** if your gaming PC is within Wi-Fi range of your main home router, I'd recommend first trying one of the **3rd or 4th setups** I'll cover next. If you are going a fully cabled, or Powerline or MOCA setup though, you can now skip ahead to the 'Recommended PC and Laptop Specs' section of this post. **3. Main Home Router + Dedicated VR Router \[separate rooms\]** Third, if you don't want to run a cable, or Powerline or MOCA adapters, from your main home router to your dedicated VR router, you can instead connect your PC to your main home router via Wi-Fi to get internet to your PC and VR headset. [Main Home + Dedicated VR Router \[Separate Rooms\]](https://preview.redd.it/kaffo1vc5f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44d13a38c220447f19f3c9d3e865a017469a1cb7) In this setup, your PC will need to have Wi-Fi on it, either built in, or from a [Wi-Fi network card](https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-PCE-AX58BT-802-11ax-external-antennas/dp/B07Y2BNRHZ) or [USB Wi-Fi adapter,](https://www.amazon.com.au/TP-Link-Extension-Archer-TX30U-Plus/dp/B0FJ1DHN73) and be within Wi-Fi range of your main home router. If you're PC is not within Wi-Fi range of your main home router, or you don't have a main home router at all, you'll need to go with the forth setup I'll cover next. Ideally the network card or USB Wi-Fi adapter you get will be the same Wi-Fi standard as your main home router so you get the best speeds out of it, for example if you have a Wi-Fi **6** main home router, get a Wi-Fi **6** network card or USB Wi-Fi adapter. With this setup, you'll need to have a solid internet connection from your main home router to your PC's Wi-Fi if your playing games online, like Population One, Contractors or Pavlov. For games that are played offline, like Skyrim or Half Life Alyx or whatever, the speed of your internet connection doesn't matter. You'll also need to setup internet connection sharing, a.k.a ICS on your PC, and I'll show you how to do that in a later section. If this is the setup you're going with, you can now skip ahead to the 'Recommended PC and Laptop Specs' section of this post. **4. Mobile Hotspot + Dedicated VR Router** If your PC's Wi-Fi is out of the Wi-Fi range of your main home router, or you don't have a main home router at all, you can instead go with the forth setup. Here, you'd simply use a mobile hotspot on your phone instead of a main home router to get internet access to your PC and VR headset. [Phone Mobile Hotspot for Internet Access](https://preview.redd.it/yifn1rpe5f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee1cd27c8a5ff20f968e5de02810ba87e8f816f4) Again, you'll need to have Wi-Fi either built in or added to your PC with a Wi-Fi adapter like I mentioned in the third setup, and you'll also need to setup internet connection sharing, a.k.a ICS, for this one. Again, this setup will only impact your internet speed, and still gets you solid results. If you're going with this setup, you can now skip ahead to the 'Recommended PC and Laptop Specs' section of this post. **5. Dedicated VR Router Only \[no internet\]** Fifth, if you're PC doesn't have Wi-Fi at all for whatever reason, you can go with a dedicated VR router only setup for VR gaming. [Dedicated VR Router Only Setup](https://preview.redd.it/kcmvficg5f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11ab36051a3a8fbd35ede9100e365b229849d0e2) This means you won't have internet access to your PC or VR headset and it'll just be you, your PC, your dedicated VR router, and your VR headset. This setup is used if you'll only be gaming offline. Just keep in mind, you'll still need to download and install some software on your PC for any of this to work, so at some point you'll need to connect your PC to the internet somehow, at least for the initial setup. If this is the setup you want to use, you can now skip ahead to the 'Recommended PC and Laptop Specs' section of this post. **6. PC as a Mobile Hotspot** Almost last, and definitely least, you can use the mobile hotspot on your PC and connect your VR headset directly to that via Wi-Fi. This is easily the worst setup, but if you literally have no other option, it is possible to do it this way, and some including me have gotten some solid results. For this one, your PC will need to have really solid Wi-Fi built into it. To check that, hit the windows key on your keyboard, type cmd, open a command prompt, and type netsh space wlan show drivers, and hit enter. [Finding Your PC's Wi-Fi Network Card Details](https://preview.redd.it/6o8ejm9i5f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1fa797d12a26b70a9bb313ec3556d2cae5587027) In this list, you'll see your PC's Wi-Fi adapter. You can search that online and see if it's any good, or just take your chances to see how it pans out. Just be aware, your Wi-Fi will have to support the 5 GHz frequency band at a minimum, you'll get mixed results at best, and even a $40 dedicated VR router will be better than this. [Finding Your PC's Wi-Fi Network Card Details](https://preview.redd.it/uaivhyqj5f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9811c7433ee60ad4b6f40831d7594635ac488ec4) **There's 2 ways you can set this up** to get internet to your VR headset, one is to get internet from a mobile hotspot on your phone. [Using a Mobile Phone for Internet Access](https://preview.redd.it/zabmxxgl5f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cb529e1b5a38a1b1ce8a6770a6fe088be7a7f30) The other way is to get internet access from your main home routers Wi-Fi network. [Using Your Main Home Router for Internet Access - RECOMMENDED](https://preview.redd.it/ettme47n5f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f86d0765b5ea1bc2e0a04f242887d9fe7ee69269) If you have a **main home router** and you're within Wi-Fi range of it when you're gaming, **this is the way I'd recommend,** though I'll show you how to set it up both ways in this course. If this is the setup you want to use, you can now skip ahead to the 'Recommended PC and Laptop Specs' section of this post. **7. Puppis S1** Also worth mentioning is the Puppis S1 Wi-Fi 6 router from Prism XR, which just plugs into your PC and gives you a private Wi-Fi network ready for VR gaming. This is actually a really solid option. I still prefer a good Wi-Fi 6 router, or particularly for my Quest 3, a Wi-Fi 6e router, but you can get good enough results from this router. I won't cover how to set these up in this course, as you just follow the simple steps in the manual, and you're good to go. [Puppis S1 Wi-Fi 6 Router Setup](https://preview.redd.it/whgxexwo5f1g1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de95405cdad30595b21ac35cbadd8014a0a122a7) **RECOMMENDED PC / LAPTOP SPECS:** With that out of the way, let's talk gaming PC and laptop specs. For the graphics card, you can get anything from an Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD RX 580 GPU, up to an RTX 40 or 5090 or AMD RX 7900 XTX. My recommendation would be something with an RTX 3070 or higher, peak would be an RTX 4080 or 4090, or Nvidia's new 50 series graphics cards, or the equivalent AMD card if you can fund it. The better the GPU the more demanding games and mods you can run. The CPU just needs to be able to keep up with the GPU. Stick with 16GB RAM at a minimum, ideally 32GB DDR4 or DDR5. Thanks mate :] Thats a similar setup to what I'm running performance wise. Only difference is I have a Wi-Fi 6e TP-Link AXE5400 as I live in an apartment block full of people so was getting a choppy signal on a Wi-Fi 6 router. The Wi-Fi 6e sorted it right out for my situation. 600-750Mbps is flying though! Nice work.

Really enjoying my AXE75/AXE5400, but I paid about the same price for that through Amazon as this. Should I return and swap? I'm already satisfied with the 6GHz performance to my VR headset.

TP-Link AXE5400 (Archer AXE75) here for about $150 currently. On 6e (I turn off 2.4 and 5 Ghz) I get a consistent 2400 bps on my quest 3 and pro. Nothing else in my house uses 6e so there's zero competition for bandwidth. Only problem is the headsets struggle to connect sometimes. Toggling wifi on and off in the headset usually does the trick. There's good data on router performance over on the virtual desktop discord. Edit: typos

I've been having great range with the TP-Link AXE5400 (Archer AXE75). Not sure about long term use though with issues around TP-Link, and the potential removal from the market in the US.

TPLink AX5400 or AXE5400, done. Those are around $100/$150 on Amaz right now, I did a quick check I am using AXE in 1800ish. The big thing on routers, be sure it has multiple CPUs in it, different class ARM stuff, but you want more than 1. /cheers

The S1 connects through USB. It doesn’t have ethernet. You can connect to the S1 and your WiFi at the same time. You might have to disable automatic metric under IPv4 properties for the S1 and your WiFi adapter. Otherwise your PC can have problems trying get to the internet through your S1 instead of your WiFi. I had to set interface metric for the WiFi adapter to 10 and the S1 to 500 to make the PC prioritize WiFi for broadband access. Also make sure there is no gateway for the S1 under IPv4 and IPv6 properties. I ended up returning my S1 though. It kept having random disconnects. Using a TP-Link AXE5400 that I got from CostCo for $130. Works great and no disconnects. Same IPv4/6 tweaks for networking.

Yep. Got a TP-Link AXE5400. Costco online had it for a good price. Running it with a Lenovo Legion Pro 5i. No problems now.
