Go with Ubiquiti Unifi ecosystem, but get a different router/gateway other then the Express 7. It is a very basic system and low powered. If you want a basic router go with the Cloud Gateway Ultra. If Wifi is why your Thinking on the Express 7, go with the dream router 7 instead. or get a wireless AP to go with the cloud Gateway Ultra.

Get a Unifi gateway and wireless ap. They work great.

If you're near a Microcenter, this is going to be the best you can get within that budget: [https://www.microcenter.com/product/692536/ubiquiti-unifi-dream-router-7-desktop-10g-cloud-gateway-with-integrated-wifi-7,-poe-switch,-microsd-storage](https://www.microcenter.com/product/692536/ubiquiti-unifi-dream-router-7-desktop-10g-cloud-gateway-with-integrated-wifi-7,-poe-switch,-microsd-storage) Also, if you have coverage issues, the Dream Router 7 is compatible with Unifi access points to expand your coverage. If you want to save a couple bucks, don't plan on needing extra Ethernet ports, or don't plan on using Ubiquiti's other features such as security cameras, and go with the UniFi Express 7. I wish this sub would stop recommending Unifi to everyone. If you don’t have networking experience you don’t want unifi. You’ll get better out of the box performance with something like a BE550. I manage a ubiquiti mesh at work and even I don’t use unifi at home. Just stick to something that’s plug and play like eero or tp-link

It’s not good out of the box though. Even after a quick configuration the dream router wasn’t performing as well as other options that are plug and play. It’s really hard for me to recommend their prosumer products. When B2B companies try to cater to household consumers the often miss and in my opinion ubiquiti is no different

bufferbloat / sqm mangement is kinda awful on the asus routers [https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat](https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat) even on their higher end models with SQM enabled you still get pingspikes to 30ms for no reason and memory leaks P.S ux7 is not very good at routing despite having the same hardware as ucg ultra, would be better off with a ucg ultra + whatever AP

Yeah, with smart queues enabled you still get +25-30ms bufferbloat on UX7 instead of +1-2ms like on UCG ultra, may be firmware issue or just intergration issue. I tested in November 2025. both max out the speed at 300/300 with QoS because they have the same CPU/ram configuration, but at least on the UCGultra you get no ping increase or packet loss in games etc when you download stuff or stream video. My current setup is UX7 + UCG-fibre, I've found the UX7 actually outperforms the U7-pro / pro-xg when used as a dedicated AP.

Yes, but it's mostly a CPU bottleneck, smart queues is literally just fq\_codel. On the UCG fibre I can get +1ms and maintain full gigabit speeds with smart queues, the help article guideline was written for older stuff. Even on mikrotik models with a completely different protocol like CAKE or Omada stuff with Diffserv, generally the the older dual/quad core A53 stuff is limited to \~300mbps and the newer quad core A73 stuff can route 1000mbps+ QOS, it's just a hardware speed issue. The main reason is because enabling SQM disables hardware offload, so the CPU gets slammed and becomes the bottleneck instead of the internal switch for overall routing throughput. Still a small price to pay to avoid having pingspikes, especially with background network activity :) on my gigabit FTTB line I still get measurable jitter in CS2 without some form of QoS, even when up/down is nowhere near saturation. https://preview.redd.it/5vthfjvuohng1.png?width=1493&format=png&auto=webp&s=90492d3e0855c830d760ed78fbc60d286e714c87

Unifi Express 7 if you have a switch, Unifi Dream Router 7 if you need just a few ports. If you plan many cameras, you'll need a PoE switch anyway. Unifi Network is by far the best web UI on the market, outstanding monitoring. And their cameras integrate into the application suite excellently. If it can be placed somewhat central-ish, one AP should provide decent coverage. If not, more access points can be added to it, wired or wireless backhaul.

It's just ridiculous that the default recommendation here is always UCG Fiber (and I have one myself) with 0 context about his LAN, how many and how fast wired clients, area he needs to cover with wifi. OP look at Unifi Express 7 first, and think what is it missing.

It would be multiple products and it's very customizable based on your needs. Going to be comparing to the Pro Deployment which is $699 No Wiring but only need WiFi? Dream Router 7: $279 2x U7 Pro + 2 POE injectors: $408 Total: $687 Need at least 1 ethernet ports near the mesh AP? Dream Router 7: $279 2x Unifi Express 7: $398 Total: $677 Have at least 1 ethernet port wired and need both multiple ethernet and wifi? Dream Router 7: $279 Unifi Express 7: $199 U7 In-Wall: $149 Total: $628 It's a whole ecosystem of devices meant to work together and you can continually expand or replace as units get old. Eeros and Orbis would require replacing the entire stack when it comes to upgrading. With a Unifi setup you can pick and choose which components you want to replace, usually you keep the gateway/router and swap out the Wireless Access Points.

You can go with ASUS be86u/88u/92u/96u or unifi dream 7 and unifi express 7. These are expensive models tho, but you get what you pay for! Especially asus routers with the ASUSWRT Merlin firmware!

Pretty much any consumer router made in the last 10 years will work, but id recommend the unifi express (149.99) or unifi express 7 (199.99), I would go with the unifi express 7 as its a bit more value and is more future proof, Unifi routers also have great IDS/IPS. And then an 8 port unmanaged gigabit switch, pretty much anything will do the trick as long as it says gigabit and has at least 8 ports.
