i have run 3 marathons , NY, Chicago, Berlin - all streaming directly from my garmin Forerunner 265 NYC: Shokz open run pro - died after 1:45 despite working flawlessly for 3 hour training runs in the weeks before Chicago: JBL Soundgear Sense - lasted the whole race (3:15) with plenty left to spare. During areas of high crowd congestion there was some stuttering in the audio most likely from interference. It was short lived and recovered without any issues Berlin: Skokz open run pro - replacement set that was sent to me from the manufacturer after the failure in NYC - Powered down at 2:04:00 despite testing them the week before in my house to last more than 6 hours at full volume. I love the shokz because they have actual buttons vs touch controls which can get problematic when wet or when your hands get sweaty. I also like being able to sync the bluetooth to a new/different device in the field without having to have a case with me like some other models and brands. But at the end of the day, that is 2x that the shokz failed me when it really mattered. I am assuming that all of the bluetooth interference causes it to do some sort of internal processing that absolutely cooks the battery life. I should have just used my JBL which have been rock solid, but i was concerned that the high heat and excess sweat would cause issue with the touch controls (which does sometimes happen even on my training runs) Having talked to others that ran in berlin with shokz it is a mixed bag. Several people had the same issue as me, and several did 5-6 hours with no issues. A lot have people said the 2nd gen may be better, but even still i am a bit gun-shy about running a world major with shokz again. It just isn't worth the risk - i had a really dope playlist too :-(
Totally get it - I enjoy ear-clip style earbuds as well. I have probably sampled over two dozen models over the past year (sometimes I even get them for free in exchange for honest reviews) Personally, my #1 suggestion would be the Shockz Opendots One. I have yet to find any earclip that is "better" in terms of sound quality or call quality. Bass is quite impressive compared to most other earclips which sound "flat". Trust me, I've been looking HARD to find anything newer or better with no luck (not that I need better, but I consume 10+ hours of music daily, so I'm always on the hunt for 'better' ear candy) In fact as I type I'm rocking my OpenDots One. They're actually on sale right now for a great price. Funny thing is I just tested the brand new JBL Soundgear clips which are the same price as the OpenDots right now and was VERY disappointed. They were nowhere near as 'full' and lacked a low-end completely. Call quality was great and app features were awesome, but they were so disappointing I gave them to my wife to try out (if she doesn't like them, they're going on eBay lol). If you want to try ear-hook earbuds, I would consider the Shockz OpenFit Pro which have nearly double the size drivers for sound (11x20mm drivers compared to 12mm round), that get so insanely loud they literally tickle my ear hairs at max volume. Those also have a nifty ANC feature that doesn't eliminate voices, but does block out droning sounds (engine noise, car noise, road noise, fans, etc). But in terms of earclips, I have yet to find anything that compares to the OpenDots One. I hear the Bose Ultra Open also have great sound quality, but poor call quality. Which is a shame because I like the color and style choices of the Bose Ultra opens. I just can't justify the price since they're not a massive step up from the OpenDots.
The OpenFit pro have very strong bass considering they are open-ear. They have a large driver which helps it push more 'sound' so to speak which is needed for stronger bass. >My only worry with the openfit is if I don't like them I can't return them at Currys in the UK, where as I can return the open dots on Amazon if I don't get on with them So go with the OpenDots One unless you're certain you'll like ear-hook style earbuds. The OpenDots are plenty good enough for the average user and they have great bass considering all other earclips I've sampled. I'd probably start with the opendots one since you can return if you don't like them. Only consider the Openfit pro if you feel that you need more (and louder) bass than what the OpenDots have to offer. Note I wear my earbuds until the battery is drained. I find that the OpenDots One have a roughly 6 hour battery life (maybe 7 depending on usage) before I need to toss them back in the case for 15+ minutes to charge. The OpenFit pro of course have a larger battery so they last a lot longer before wearing out the battery (very rarely do I ever run out of battery because they always end up in the case for at least 10 minutes while doing something else like eating lunch)
Between the two, the Shockz OpenFit Pro win. They are more expensive, but the larger drivers move substantially more air which translates into more bass. Like I said, at max volume (which is almost too loud for me), it tickles my ears (of course at these volumes due to sound leakage a person 20 feet away will be able to clearly hear what you're listening to). My Shockz OpenDots One get loud (can be heard clearly from 10+ feet away), but they don't tickle the hairs on my ears like the OpenFit Pro. Added bonus is the ANC mode (which doesn't block out all noise, but does help reduce/eliminate engine and motor noise so it's better than nothing). And it has physical buttons which is nice (the OpenDots One have touch sensors that aren't bad, but different from a physical button)
Honestly, they were on my radar but I passed on them for a few reasons * I hated the c-clip bridge design. Something about the styling just felt 'cheap' and ugly to me personally. Earclips are a statement piece and those just looked cheap * Proprietary L2HC codec - without LDAC or AptX-Adaptive, you won't get any premium streaming codec unless you have a Huwaei phone which I'll never own personally. Can't even work around that with an external USB-C streaming chip because I don't think there is one available. * 10.8mm driver to produce sound is on the smaller side. For mids and highs I'm sure it's fine, but in my experience, those smaller diameter drivers don't push enough sound to produce sufficient low-end in open-ear designs (for in-ear it wouldn't be a problem, but open-ear clips benefit from 12mm drivers or larger). I have heard good stuff about them, but personally I have better specs in my collection so I haven't had a desire to grab the FreeClips2 personally
I have less experience with ear-hook style earbuds, but actually I recently acquired the Shockz OpenFit Pro (in exchange for an honest review) and they have blown everything else out of the water that I've tried (including some JBL endurance zone earhooks and some other cheaper models from other brands). They have a massive 11x20mm driver which produces a LOT of sound, plenty of low-end as well. Battery life is amazing (I have never been able to fully drain the battery, they always end up in the case for 10 minutes while eating lunch or something and that's enough to add 4 hours more to the battery life). In fact, I find myself wearing the OpenFit Pro more often than my collection of earclips simply because they are louder and have better dynamic range (thanks to the larger drivers). Of course if anyone thinks they have found something better than the OpenFit Pro, I'd love to know so I can try and test them out for myself.
Not noise canceling, but the sense pros are good.
I highly recommend jbl soundgear sense. I bought for running, but they very quickly became my favourite earphones for everything. They are oerfection. The fit is super secure.
The asking price for openfit 2 in australia is way too much for what it does. JBL soundgear sense is actually cheaper and few times drops to $100 when it goes on sale. The soundquality and feature set is insane.
If you don't care about passive or active noise canceling, I highly recommend my current favorite. JBL soundgear sense. They are super secure, extremely comfy that you forget wearing them, do not cause irritation and they have insane sound quality. It's like listening to music through some hifi quality stereo bookshelf speakers. They also have multipoint. I bought these for running and they quickly became my favorite that I am using them all the time.
I am using JBL soundgear sense. They are super comfy for me. The sound quality is insane. They fit well for light workouts i do. Give them a try. They have multipoint which i love. I don't need to disconnect and connect if working on my laptop.
JBL soundgear sense. They are not only cheaper but sound insanely better than shokz.
One to avoid are Jbl soundgear sense. Bought them 7 months ago and they are forever losing connection with Garmin fenix. Unbelievably annoying especially half way through a horrendous marathon. No part of their name is accurate.
I use the JBL soundflex earbuds and pair them with my Roku tv.
