Maybe it's a good idea to get your own dashcam and even if your car gets the functionality in the future it's good to have a second one for failsafe and redundancy. If on a budget, the [VIOFO A119 Mini 2](https://dashcamtalk.com/viofo-a119-mini-2/) is a great option. Otherwise, I'd get the [VIOFO A229 Pro](https://dashcamtalk.com/viofo-a229-pro/), which is the one I have. It's been recommended as the best 4K dashcam for a while now. There is a new model that does 60fps instead of 30 but it's a little overkill and very expensive. This one will still produce better quality video than other dashcams, including the fancy 4K ones some cars come with now. It even comes as a 2 or 3 camera setup for adding a rear and an interior camera. As a bonus, they also have an external rear camera available for it, for pickup trucks or cars without a rear window, I guess :) Both of these have buffered parking mode recording with event detection. You can get them on [Amazon.se](http://Amazon.se) or order directly from the manufacturer's website (a little cheaper but it takes a couple of weeks).

I installed a VIOFO A229 Pro 3 Channel 4K HDR Dash Cam (amazon) with inside and rear cameras in our 2013 RX450h and have been happy with it's operation. It has voice control, parking recording and impact recording. Get the VIOFO memory card with it. I tried a cheaper card but it was not "fast" enough. The install was not easy although there is a "Victor" on YouTube that goes through how to remove all of the panels to run the cable to the rear hatch. Either that or find a competent installer. These days, it is hard to imagine not having a video record every time we leave the house! Good luck and happy driving!

Blackvue is probably the most discreet (has no screen and takes up the smallest footprint). You use an app to view the lens angle, download footage, etc. I personally have the Viofo A229 Pro which is front and rear cams. I love it. I bought one for two other family members and thinking about installing it in my other vehicle as well. It’s a little bigger than the balckvue because there is a rear mounted screen, but it sits pretty flush against the window (wedge style) which I like. I think the wedge style squeezes a little more picture quality out of the lens because the lens sits closer to the windshield glass but that is just my opinion.

Sorry this is happening to you. I have two Viofo A229 Pros (2 channel) and just bought a third for another family member. I really like them and the footage is crystal clear. You can buy a 3 channel version for not much more. As for storage needs, I can record 8 hours of 2 channel footage shooting 4K front and 2k in the rear cam (Viofo 256gb SD card). A 3 channel will take up a little more space which will result in a smaller amount of footage saved. Or you can get the 512gb storage which would save somewhere around 12-14 hours of 4K footage if I had to guess.

Similar to this I have two Viofo A229 Pros and love them. Have been thinking the 4K might be overkill, so the plus is a really great choice for the price. I’m not really sure 4K is necessary when you can just say the license plate out loud.

You’ll be fine with either. The only difference is 2K 60fps (Plus) vs 4K 30fps (Pro). Both are great cameras and will accomplish the same thing. It’s best practice to say the license plate out loud anyway so I don’t know how much of a difference 2k vs 4K will make in practice. If I were to do it again I’d probably just get the Plus and save some money.

Thinkware, Viofo, BlackVue I have a Thinkware u3000 with a dedicated backup battery. I wanted an awesome parking mode and 4K. it will last 30 days with the backup battery in radar mode. Expensive as hell. Camera was $550 and the battery was $200+ If you don’t need or want radar activated parking mode then the Viofo a229 pro 3 channel is probably a better option. 4K Starvis 2 sensors like the thinkware but I think Viofo has better quality video for some reason. It’s $280-$300 on Amazon. BlackVue has been around a while and makes good cameras from cheap to expensive. Under $200 I’d get a lower end Viofo. Try and get a 2 Channel system. All the camera apps are garbage. Buy a high quality sd card.

Yea, cops nowadays are not the best when it comes to actually investigating stuff. From what you said I think the best bet would be the **VIOFO A229 Pro 3-channel,** the same as I installed for this guy [**https://dashcamssd.com/dash-cam-projects-dario**](https://dashcamssd.com/dash-cam-projects-dario) **It will have all the features you mentioned.** But, there is one thing that you should know about parking mode, which almost nobody is talking about. The cam may drain your battery. Whether the hardwire kit has discharge protection or not, there is always a chance. You can take a chance and have the parking mode enabled, but there is a risk to it. Also, even if the harwire kit is working properly and cutting off power if the battery is discharged to some level--it puts a strain on it. Which means it wears out quicker. If you want a true parking mode that can work up to 72h without the need to start the car and not drain your battery--you need to install a dedicated battery pack. It will connect to the camera directly. This way your car's battery is not in the equation.

I can back up what a few others have recommended. I have the 3 ch VIOFO A229 Pro in my FL5 and it’s a great camera. More importantly the app actually works. Get the hardwire kit with the low voltage cut off and take your time wiring. Routing the wire through the hatch for the rear cam is a little tricky but 100% worth it for a clean install.

Visit one of the Dashcam subreddits. You can learn more, and view video from different cameras to get an idea of quality. This subreddit's "More info" is a short wiki of recommendations, it does seem to be a bit outdated. https://www.reddit.com/r/Dashcam/s/ZZZtdkLaCf I have been very happy with Viofo. 4K options, image quality is high. No cellular option, but that means no subscription/cellular plan needed. They sell on Amazon. I have had A129 Pro Duo for several years, it works great. I just bought a new car yesterday, and bought a new Viofo A229 Pro 3CH from Amazon yesterday around 4:30pm and Amazon delivered it around 8pm, the same day. I don't even have prime! Install is pretty straightforward. They use double sided tape to adhere to glass. The hard part is "hiding" the wires. It is not hard, it just takes a little finessing of body panels to tuck wires out of sight. That will let you use the 12v cigarette lighter or USB output with included hardware. A cleaner look is a "permanent" install kit. That just uses a fuse tap from the fuse panel in the passenger compartment and run the wire to there. It is super easy, you just have to find a fuse that is powered from the battery and not switched (by the key) to get parking mode recording too.

A229 Plus/Pro family of cameras are great. We have had great success with their lineup. 3ch camera systems definitely have their place. the A329 is for a niche group of clientele. There will always be individuals who seek the latest and greatest. No 3 channel support, but the ride share market often gravitate to budget options. SSD is pretty cool if you really want to save lots of video footage. For the average commuter, a 128GB-256GB is plenty of video recording. We're in the process of planning the testing road map. I am looking forward to seeing what this new device has to offer as well.

The A129 Pro is considered a legacy camera in 2024. Sure, it doesn't have the latest Starvis sensors, but if you are happy with the A129Pro then stick with what you like. Hard to say if the A329 is worth the upgrade as testing has just begun. Upgrading will ultimately be your choice if it will suit your needs. For the A229Pro, we have well over 150 units out in the field and have not had reports of any poor video quality on the front camera. When it comes to any mass produced electronics there's always a chance that something goes wrong. Wouldn't hurt to reach out to viofo tech support and have them review some footage.

Both the A229plus/ Pro and A329 use the HK4 usb C hardwire kit. A229Plus/Pro rear camera cable is USB-C to C. A329 IS COAXIAL. Upgrading from A129 pro to either of the above would require rewiring entirely. This unit uses the HK3 and Mini usb rear camera connection. The 229 family of cameras is a solid performer. The a329 dos have the upper edge. Should it fall within your budget, the a329 is worth the extra buck. Unfortunately, there is no saving pennies here. Thr a129 rear cam won't work with the a229 or a329.

The A329 is a 2channel camera only. For the A229 Pro the bit rate is not affected in front/rear configurations. With the addition of the Interior IR, the bitrate does drop for the front camera (marginally) Robert from RetroCarGuy530 has in depth bitrate testing on DCT (dashcamtalk),and has a wealth of knowledge far surpassing our more simplistic testing.

We carry the major brands, as there is no such thing as the perfect camera. All depends on lifestyle and what you need It to do. Example: viofo a229 pro is the highest video quality out there. Others will probably agree. While great video, their parking mode is decent. Draws too much current, so 3h of video recording is the average, without killing your battery. Thinkware U3000 has radar mode. With this technology, the camera draws very low current until something enters the radar zone. It wakes up and records. The daytime video is good, struggles in the night. As mentioned, if only there was one camera we could sell everyone, it sure would be much easier.

[dashcam comparison ](https://youtu.be/tJeK03JIOGA?si=KfL3PSV34nMCmXLV) That may help solidify your choice. I like the better video quality that viofo offers. However, the thinkware performs really well for parking mode, and the app is really polished. Btw if you are using a battery pack, you alleviate the recordtime hurdle from viofo. The powercell8 is ancient in terms of tech. What vehicle is it going into?

If you believe the Wirecutter, go for a Viofo or a Miofive (budget pick; I tried one; it was junk). https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-dash-cam/ This recommendation was published before the A329 came out, or I believe they would recommend it. I’ve had both the A229 Pro and the A329; I find the latter to be a better dashcam, mostly for its SSD support.

For me the SSD is a major win on capacity and durability alone. The max supported capacity is 8x over max microSD. SSDs are designed for more write cycles, they have better wear leveling, and they tolerate heat better, so better durability. And if you frequently offload your video, as I do, the speed increase is wonderful. 60 fps video and faster WiFi are other benefits of the A329 over the A229 Pro.

Why I swapped? Was looking for better video quality and dash cam with front and back camera. When I start to research I saw that Viofo had a pretty good (top of the line) sensors when Rove still offered first Sony Starvis sensors. For now I’m happy with video quality and clean look of the install. What I’m not so happy is the phone app and UI as Rove app much more seamless and intuitive. Also WiFi need to be manually enabled on the dashcam to access files on the phone

I do uber and live in Texas so I had bought a vantrue n4 3ch back in 2020. The cam lasted me a little over 2 years before it started to crap out on me. When it started to go it would just bootloop or the screen would stay black. I don't know if it was the heat or that the camera would run 6-8 hours daily that killed it. Right now I am running a Viofo a229 pro on one of my vehicles and so far it's been working good. I like that it has 3 separate cameras that way if the main one breaks I can just buy that one and connect the others without having to buy the full set again.

I owned the N4 non pro version and liked it so I am sure the pro would be better. Now I run the viofo a229 and also like it. A good thing about the viofo is that all 3 are separate cameras so if one breaks down you can just replace that one. With the N4 I believe you have to buy the whole package if the main camera goes down. Have you taken a look at the E360 from vantrue? I got that one recently for my vehicle I do uber in and so far it's been good. Easy to setup since it's a single camera and it has touchscreen. The touchscreen part isn't a huge deal since you can control the N4 and a229 from phone apps but it is a nice feature to have. I think you could also setup a rear camera and an LTE module to it.

Another recommendation for Viofo A229 Pro from me (perhaps the newer A329 as that has recently been released). The only issue I have is my rear window has a very dark factory tint. The night time quality is quite poor (compared to the very good daytime quality). Of course that's not really a fault of the camera but just something worth considering.

I have the A229 Pro, 2 channel. I would highly recommend it. Unless you are a uber driver or really have a need for an interior cam I wouldn't bother as it will just fill up your SD card quicker and I think it also reduces the resolution of the front cam if you use all three channels (not 100% sure if that's still the case tho). Both the front and rear cams can have the lens rotated so there should not be any issues with a 90 degreee mounting. Also the front screen turns off while driving so I never really use it however it is very useful when installing to see the cam view as well as the rare times you want to modify any of the settings as you don't need to connect to the app or pc etc. One additional recommendation from me would be to get it hardwired using the hardwire kit. Installation was easy, just a little time consuming with routing wires etc.

All of the ones mentioned above have the latest Sony Starvis2 image sensors which are industry leading. If you’re after an easy to install and OEM looking dashcam, FITCAMX could be an option. I have the aliexpress 4K version in both my cars as it piggybacks power off the dimming rear view mirror and it slots under the ADAS sensors near the rear view mirror, took 5 min to install. Why would hardwiring void your warranty? You're not changing any stock components, just tapping into an existing circuit and adding a fuse. And it's dead simple to undo it, you just unplug your add-a-fuse... Anyway, the A119 Mini 2 is excellent. I installed one on my girlfriend's car and will be installing one on my mom's car this weekend. The A229 pro front+rear is what I run in my car, attached to an external battery that is hardwired into the fuse box. I would just hardwire yours, and if you think you want front and rear later on just go ahead and get it now. But, you can hide wires pretty well even just using the 12V socket. It's just a matter of popping off interior trim panels.

Viofo A229Pro 2ch. Excellent resolution and very easy to use. Lots of You tube videos on it. Check out project farm for a very good comparison review. I've had Rexxen, Blackvue and Kenwood before but the Viofo is the best I've had. Good luck.

I buy dashcam with the expectation that it will die from summer heat (Texas). I have Viofo A229Pro for 2 years and a half. No issue so far. I can almost guarantee you that there is no perfect dashcam that can capture nighttime driving with crystal clear image 100% of the time. Dashcam is meant to indicate the historical event or proof who's at fault.

My EV6 dashcam was my 4th install over the last decade. I looked long and hard at the Fitcamx, but was ultimately dissuaded by reviews mentioning internal battery failures with a soldered cell. The sensor is also not a Sony Starvis 2, which is the most recommended sensor on DashCamTalk. I went with the Viofo A229 Pro Dual. 4K front, 2K rear, with Starvis 2 sensors, and a supercapacitor rather than a battery. Supercapacitors definitely have a longer lifespan when exposed to the heat of the sun. Sure, it's not the sleek look of the FitcamX, but with the Viofo behind the mirror, it doesn't obstruct my view, and I've had one of my Viofo cameras running flawlessly for 9 years! Best of luck!

I installed the Viofo A229 Pro 4k 2CH w/256gb Viofo SD card and hardwired it for parking mode with the optional kit. I set the parking mode for 24 hours(garage kept) and will hook up a Noco Genius 1 trickle charger after 24 hours if I won't be driving for over a few days. The 4k with HDR and polarizing couple give an incredible clarity. Someone has tested car battery degradation with parking mode enabled and it shows about a 20% percent quicker over the average battery life of 4-5 years. So average cost of new battery times .20 will be the cost to run a hardwired dash cam. I haven't had an trouble not having an additional battery for the dashcam. Hope this helps.

Its pretty easy, if you want a good quality rear camera, the Viofo is your only option as they offer 2k vs FHD of their competitors. If you are satisfied with 2k at the front, the Viofo A229Plus, if you want 4k front view A229Pro. Now if you dont care about having the best rear view quality, VanTrue has great offerings. It all comes down to how many channels/cameras you want, which you left out in your post.

Not sure if you made your choice yet but my Viofo stopped working right after 1 1/2 years. Customer service offered to replace if I paid shipping but I declined. I picked up the Viofo A229 Pro 2ch, and the hard wire kit. I love everything about it. Super clear. Install very easy. Used some youtube videos on pulling the panels to hide all the wires behind the air bags. I used these for the install: [https://youtu.be/EC2aNPOkh9U?si=GDPdSaboWRwU3nj5](https://youtu.be/EC2aNPOkh9U?si=GDPdSaboWRwU3nj5) and this one: [https://youtu.be/JxCcEb1wUbI?si=2nWkRvJ6qLQndLhU](https://youtu.be/JxCcEb1wUbI?si=2nWkRvJ6qLQndLhU) The first one is better, the second one is a little excessive in panel pulling and wiring but at least gives you ideas on the panel. Zip tie method to run the rear wire through the rubber sleeves it best, not a drill bit or pen. Right (passenger side) rubber tube has less wires. Just be very careful....or it will be an expensive repair. You do NOT need to cut the rubber grommit/tube at the rear gate. For A-Piller I used this civic video, the CR-V is the exact same. You don't need to remove the speaker, just zip tie the power wire behind the airbag to the fuse box (if that's the way you are going to wire it) [https://youtu.be/fPHJtrrWx7s?si=dLKTy2l6xh5ZXNH8](https://youtu.be/fPHJtrrWx7s?si=dLKTy2l6xh5ZXNH8) Mats, I just bought the Weather Tech HP mats for the front and put them in yesterday. WAY better then factory and awesome coverage and nice rubber feel. They are fantastic. I feel the rear seat factory all weather are good enough coverage. For an EXL, the Honda App doesn't have much use.

FitCamX is obviously the best if you want OEM style fitment but I hear about too many issues with them. The hardwiring for parking mode is a bit weird as well as the picture of the wiring harness they suggest for it doesn't look like it works with the FitCamX made for the Polestar 2. Apparently customer service is good and they'll help you Flash your dash can to a different recording setting where it will actually keep your files (can't remember the details but NO IDEA why it's not shipped like this as default 🤷🤷🤷). I wanted ask the bells and whistles and was looking at the ThinkWare U3000 then realized it can't use HDR even though it has the best sensors that are able to use HDR in many other dash cams 🤷🤷🤷 For the price they charge this is an unforgivable omission. I was ready to pull the trigger but why get a dash cam that can't take good pictures at night? Amazon has a flash sale on a VIOFO A229 Pro 2 channel. I checked the reviews and they were all really good so I pulled the trigger. It came with a CPL lens filter already and I also bought their SD card, hardwiring kit, and fuse box connectors. Really easy to install and video and picture quality is very good so far. If you look at my profile I posted some stuff about it. Right now still pretty happy with the purchase and would recommend.

Mounted the front unit on the passenger side behind the rear view mirror near the top so it's not very intrusive and had power easily available. I have a a229 pro and it's pretty good. Any cheapo dashcam (with front and rear recording) is enough to prove liability. Reading plates is pretty useless unless the other guy has insurance and the cops are bored enough to go find him, and he admits to being the driver. Honestly the a129 and a229 are very close image wise, the a229 does a bit better at night though.

I've had a few different brands, currently have three viofo cameras in our vehicles. A129 is plenty good enough, a229 plus/ pro has a better sensor for night at a pretty steep price. I don't feel high dollar dashcams are worth buying, even a fuzzy picture with front and rear coverage is enough to prove fault. Having a license plate be legible is hit or miss even on the fancy ones, and rarely helps ya deal with insurance or nor will the cops chase down a hit and run in a city. I recommend a front and rear cam (the viofo records two videos, not one video with the rear overlayed) and something with either voice activation or a remote "emergency" record button. Viofo has a remote record button for 20 bucks that works on a few of their newer cameras.

Cool that there is a threaded m6 hole behind the headliner clip. I am trashing my a229 pro and replacing with sony dr900x. To OP: I would recommend avoiding viofo. Literally the only two times I needed to pull videos, it didn't record, I could not believe it. The first time I needed, I reviewed clips after parking 30 min later, and for some reason the 1 minute clip I needed just didn't exist. Every other clip was there, but not that specific one. Triple checked every clip before and after the event and it just wasn't there... The second time I witnessed a huge crash on the freeway that I very narrowly avoided. Pulled over so I could pull footage for the "victim". Red button was on showing it was recording, but no buttons were working at all when trying to pull up, recording light was clearly on. Had to unplug and turn it back on to find out it wasn't recording for the past 2 days.... Very unreliable.

I have the Viofo A229 front and rear dash cam on my 2014 Odyssey, and the video quality seems really good. The main benefit is that if you’re in a crash, you have evidence—but that could backfire if the accident is your fault. I’m a noob when it comes to installing this stuff, and I’d say it was of medium difficulty. The hardest parts were removing the panels to ensure the wires don’t interfere with the airbags, finding the correct fuse that allows the camera to turn on in accessory mode, and routing the camera wire from the rear hatch into the main cabin. There are plenty of videos online about this. I also found CR-V and Pilot installation videos helpful since their setups are pretty similar.

I just ran the cable behind the glove box and up the passenger A Pillar. Install took about 20 mins. Really easy. As some have stated the cig light will only pull power when the car is on so you won’t be able to run parking modes if you want to do that you would need to hardwire it and or use a battery pack (look up blackboxmycar) to supplement more power as to not drain the 12v battery. I bought mine here: https://www.viofo.nl/ Make sure you get the CPL filter, but buy a 256 card at bol.com. The one at viofo.nl is only 128. Some great reviews at dashcamtalk.com. They have an active forum as well.

I got the Viofo A229 (front and back) and wired it myself to the fuse box with their hard wire kit. First time I've removed/routed wires through trim and it wasn't that bad. Routing the two wires properly through the A pillar (behind the airbag) did take me an hour or so and a little improvising but the rest was smooth. I ended up bending a wire hanger into a C shape, tying the cable to that, and pulling the wire hanger up and behind the airbag. Would've saved me thirty minutes or so if I had planned on how I would snake the wire through the A pillar before hand. Only visible cables are where the power cables come out of the headliner trim/rear hatch trim into the dashcams. If you only care about a front cam, I know I looked at some that are wired into the rearview mirror power cabling that looked almost 100% stock. Would've gone for that if I didn't want a rear cam. u/thisisinput has an awesome video there showing almost exactly what I did. I probably watched that when I installed mine. I decided to put the camera on the right side of my mirror (which does leave more cabling exposed) because I prefer the dashcam out of sight while driving. But that's just personal preference.

Crazy part is, found from AliExpress that on some 90 degree type c type c cable commented that works on golf 8. Immidiatly ordered 2, just in case. None works for my viofo A229 pro. Gave to a colleague, who has ddpai mini 5, and both cables work. He has 2025 octavia. Have an idea to test his dashcam with that cable in my kodiaq. Will edit later the post.

I am pretty happy with my front Viofo A229; it is unobtrusive but accessible if needed, and taps into the lane assist camera power so no dangling wires (other posts / comments in the sub explain this already). I am waiting for a warmer day, to install the rear cam, since that is more involved.

I literally just got my Viofo A229 Pro installed into my 2017 Honda Civic. The dash cam has great reviews for its price point and has dual cameras. The hardwire kit and SD card are sold separately. I also paid to have the dashcam installed with a company. The installation cost can be a bit pricy depending on what companies will charge you nearby where you live.

Whatever you pick, I’d recommend against a camera that dangles off a mount unless it’s very small. I tried a Thinkware Q200 but I had to take it off immediately bc the Tacoma windshield is so small, it distracted my view no matter where I tried mounting it. I got a Viofo A229 instead and like another commenter, I mounted it in the black dot area of the windshield next to the mirror and I hardly notice it.

I've been using it with rideshare for a few months now. The quality of the video is top notch with the Starvis 2 sensor even at night. Fast Wi-Fi, good app, decent microphone, voice commands and that great "low profile" wedge shape for which Viofo is known. I'm using a Samsung card just fine. It sees a bunch of use with my work, and I check the card and format on a schedule. If I have any complaints, it is probably about the interior camera. It just feels cheap compared to everything else. The quality, even for 1080p, looks subpar to other interior camera combos I've had, and the exposure is just "weird" in that it doesn't exactly flatter anyone sitting in the car. It also has an IR cut filter (or something similar) so every time a set of bright lights hits it at night, you hear the audible *click* of the IR turning on/off which is annoying. I thought dash cameras were moving away from this. Lastly, while the IR coverage is fine, the scope is narrowed so that anything out of the cone/"periscope" of light coverage isn't lit nearly as well. My previous camera (Coxpal), while it had its own issues, did all these things better with its interior camera. Otherwise, it is a really solid camera. Have it hardwired for parking mode, and it's given me no operational issues whatsoever.

In my interpretation and opinion as a current Viofo owner (A229 Pro for passenger driving), the video quality of the latest offerings is industry leading. The Starvis2 sensor integration and HDR looks great and night footage is the best in any dash camera I've ever owned. When the original comment questions quality, I think it has more to do with little random things like bugs and other design choices. For example, the interior camera quality is rather poor and unflattering to people, and it uses an audible IR cut filter. Anytime a lifted car with its lights pulls up hitting the camera, you get the *click* as the IR turns off momentarily; I haven't had that in an IR dash cam in years. If you have the format reminder on, it keeps flashing and literally soft locks you out of doing anything on the camera. I recently updated the firmware and the front camera became inverted? The only fix was to reset (through settings, not the hard reset button) everything. I just changed cars and moved the Viofo and a piece of the outer cover on the rear cameras just fell off. This is all off the top of my head and shows rushed/sloppy design and development. That said, the camera works when I need it and the video quality is superb. (I personally haven't had any overheating issues but others have and that should be noted.) I haven't really been a fan of Blackvue for awhile. Their video quality is rather mid these days, in my opinion. Where they really outshine others is in stuff like external battery and cloud integration. They are one of the only dash cams I know of with sim card integration and cell connectivity for remote access. Pretty cool. I haven't needed this though and haven't purchased a Blackvue since they were the only game in town to offer interior cameras with IR lights. They are one of the most expensive options yet I personally feel they are overpriced for what you get unless your needs are very niche. No personal experience with Thinkware to comment in a helpful way other than to say they've been around as long as Blackvue and their camera quality always seems to look very good in videos/reviews. When it comes to dash cams, in my opinion, there really isn't a clear cut "best" but rather what is best for *you*. Just stay away from the no name, sub $80-100 LiPo things that look like an early 2000s camera. They'll more than likely be useless after a year or two. Still blows my mind to see stuff like Ssontong still out there on dash cam videos in 2024.

I've had good luck with the viofo a229 4k. Their cheaper model, which I think the a119, seems to be pretty decent as well though not quite as good video quality. In either case, I'd keep the microphone turned on, and if you witness an accident instinctively shout out loud the license plate number. Odds are it's going to be difficult to read on the video, especially at night Ditto and not cheaping out on the SD card. In fact, I probably just buy the viofo card. The heat and constant rewriting tends to kill the cheaper cards

I've had good luck with the viofo dash cams over the years. Some of the more expensive viofos have the Starvis 2 sensor, which does get a slightly better image (which might help if you are reading a license plate). Buy a really good high-endurance SD card, no matter what you buy And if you are ever in a collision, read the plate out loud so the mic can pick it up. Just in case the camera doesn't quite pick it up.

I also have a Viofo A229 Pro front/rear, only had it for about 2 months but so far it's good. I'd get a dashcam with the newest Sony Starvis 2 sensor in it. It has the best Dynamic range of any current sensor so you can have a better chance of reading the license plates of the vehicles in the video when recorded at night. That's the most important thing in my opinion. Others may have other priorities. I have a Viofo A229 Pro that records in 4K and has a Starvis 2 sensor in the rear camera. If 1440p is all that you need, then the A119 Mini2 would be my choice. I would not go with the 4 year old Viofo A119V3 recommend by others today since it's got the outdated Starvis (not 2) sensor which was the best until 2023. Here's a recent summary of what's recommended from April 2024 from blackboxmycar. These guys actually test these dashcam side by side. If you judge "best" by most integrated features and system from one manufacturer, I'd say it would be the BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE PlusDR970X-2CH LTE Plus with their extended use battery pack and data plan. It has the new(ish) Starvis 2 4K sensor for its front camera, so is among the best in PQ and if you subscribe to a monthly BlackVue plan you can access the camera at all times. because it has its own cellular connection. [https://blackvue.com/product/dr970x-2ch-lte-plus-na/](https://blackvue.com/product/dr970x-2ch-lte-plus-na/) [https://blackvue.com/product/blackvue-ultra-battery-b-130a/](https://blackvue.com/product/blackvue-ultra-battery-b-130a/) [https://blackvue.com/sim-card/](https://blackvue.com/sim-card/) It's too pricey for my budget and has features that I don't require, so I personally chose a Viofo A229 Pro about 1 1/2 years ago. Hey! So I have a dual cam setup. I use the Viofo A229 and I had it professionally installed for $300. The guy messed up the wiring because he rushed through it, even though he "ensure he was a professional". I recommend the quality of the dashcam, despite their "chinese" off brand name, they make great stuff (not sponsored lol). Viofo has different cams as well, the one I posted has 1440p front and rear and is very clear. Anyway, take it to a reputable shop and TEST IT before leaving. Like test the parking mode works (when the car is off does the dash cam still turn on?) especially if you have an external battery configured. Also, go 256GB storage card or more. Good luck!

There are others, but my perffered brand is the wedge shaped Vofo's, such as the A119 V3, A119 Mini 2, A229 Plus, A229 Pro, etc. If used with their GPS mounts, the power cable is plugged into it, allowing easy removal without dealing with any cables whatsoever. These mounts can be purchased separately, allowing a single camera to become a multi-vehicle use camera. Add in an additional power source for the other dash cam(s), and you are set.

Front: 3ch Voifo A229... Just that does what you want. But... If you want USEABLE footage consider substituting their telephoto lens (used the rear port)... Then buy a separate standalone 1ch A119mini2 for the rear. If you wanna go nutso... Buy a 2ch A229+ for the rear and another telephoto for the rear two. That gives you telephoto and wide angle for front/rear... And inside camera too. (Probably cost $750ish with cards and hardwire kits).

This video was helpful for figuring out a clean routing for the rear camera cable: https://youtu.be/UdbjC-Hu47A?si=UiUqXrbI4nghw-3B Only thing I did differently than the video was use a fishing tool and some lithium grease to pull the cable through the rubber grommet on the hatch vs. trying to finesse it through by hand. It is TIGHT in there and I didn’t want to mess with it forever.

I have the Viofo A229 Pro hardwired, but I would consider the A329 because it connects to a hard drive, allowing for more than 84 hours of continuous footage. The A229 Pro supports a maximum 512GB microSD card, which limits storage capacity. While the camera was in parking mode, we were able to capture footage of one of my coworker's cars being stolen. I strongly recommend connecting it to a hard drive; otherwise, it’s only useful while driving, not when parked. That's the quality in park mode. https://preview.redd.it/gw8sc96yi8ae1.jpeg?width=2340&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65aac800a43a8aaf86c58a33f5e7e1aa5c304fe4

Go to the dashcam sub. Better resource than here. Tl;Dr Is that you can use your dashcam video to avoid those "he said she said" bullshit things when an accident happens. Get a 2 channel, minimum (front and rear). There are even 4 channel units out there but they're hella complicated to install. 3 channel isn't super important unless you're doing like, Uber or something. Get a Viofo A229 (plus or pro) dual channel. I forget which one is better.

Haha, same model here. And the same model I recommended on my response. Damn good camera for the price. Could also rig up an old GoPro or two with a little work if you've got them lying around. Oh and as far as "backfire". I mean, data gets corrupted by police departments all the time. Who's to say your dashcam was even working?

Even hardwired to use the parking feature, dashcams won't drain your battery. Most have an inline switch so you can choose at what battery level the cam would stop working should your battery get that low. Others do it automatically at a preset level that is still above the needed amount for starting. The power draw of dashcam is really low also. Cost can vary greatly but so can the quality of the images. Even good cams may not pickup moving license plates clearly but the vehicle will be clear. Night images can be crap in lower priced cams also. I have a Viofo A229 Pro and it has been awesome. Watch Amazon for bundle sales. checkout r/dashcams

I've had the A229 pro installed in my '24 for a year now and haven't had any issues with the eyesight. Mine is mounted just below the black shroud for the eyesight cameras and is behind the rearview mirror so that I can't see the screen when driving. The only times my eyesight acts up is when I'm driving towards the sun or the windshield is icy in the morning.

Another vote for the Viofo A229, but the pro model here. I got the 2 channel, so front 4K and rear 2K, they also offer a 3 channel if you want an interior camera in 1080 with IR. If you're in the GR86, there's a cable that can be used hidden above the glovebox, or you can also use the one for the fake engine noise, with a plug and play kit from Hachi Electronics. It's the easiest install ever, i just had to remove one panel to get to the connector, then tucked all the wires into the sides of trim pieces and the headliner.

There are no good ones, including the Escort one. Escort detectors are kinda problematic (slow response) even in their highest end Max and Redline 360c models, and the camera one is even worse. Better off sticking to a Viofo or Thinkware camera + a good detector like a V1G2 or R4/R4W or R8/R8W (though I'm not happy with Uniden's business practices now, so my recommendation is V1G2). Or if you want the least expensive RD that works reasonably, the RAD 700i. Viofo is having a Black Friday sale that starts on 11/15 I think. Other brands probably will too. I intend to get an A229 Pro when the sale starts, myself. If I were going for Thinkware I would probably go for one of the U1000 models but Vortex seems to recommend Viofo mostly so that's why I am going with them.

Another vote for VIOFO, I installed the A229 Pro front and rear and it’s been rock solid with amazing quality video. Easy DIY install. Btw, to OP: don’t be intimidated by maintaining the R4P. It’s a RAV4 after all and most of the same maintenance you would do with the gas version. The hybrid part is very well engineered and requires very little maintenance. Out of all my cars, I find the R4P to be one of the easiest and lowest cost to keep maintained.

I used to run BlackVue, but when cams started getting cheaper and smaller, I started using VIOFO. I’m currently running the A229 Pro 4k, I’ve put them in a few cars recently. Use a good/fast SD card (Sandisk Max Endurance 256) and it should take the heat and years of rewrites. Quality (can see plates better) is good both front and rear. The app is hit or miss with connectivity, you can plug in a pc direct to the camera for downloads, or just pull the card and pop it into a computer to pull files. A329 is out, only diff I would think is nice is ability to add an external SSD for recording, which could be useful if someone actually takes the unit.

There is a video on the Garmin mini where you use an adapter that plugs in to you mirror power and has a USB port on it. Garmin is one of the few that can use USB. It's very clean and easy. But the resolution isn't 2 or 4k. I just got a two channel Viofo A229 Pro and will hard wire it for the parking mode. I'm in the middle of an argument with the dealership about a bent steering knuckle and I know they bent it. But I don't have the proof. I have been researching cameras for our Counties truck fleet and am going to recommend the Viofo line. But if you just want a nice easy setup, go with the Garmin

I've been using the Viofo dashcams for over 10 years. They're as reliable as any other brand, affordable, and I have no reason to switch to another company. I put tens of hours into finding the right kind of dashcam. Viofo A119, or the A229. Since the market crash of 2009, auto insurance scams went up 1200 % within 2 years  and with the increased cost of everything now, I can only assume that number has gone up. Even organized crime is involved, staging multi-vehicle crashes. EVERYONE needs a dashcam. If someone calls the police on you and it's their word against yours, you might lose in court. And not just traffic court. You can be charged criminally ( depending on that person's "story" ). If that happens, it will be months of stress, thousands on a lawyer  and you still might lose. No license to get to and from work, thousands in fines, sued civilly, and angry for 10 years with much higher insurance premiums. This is a worst case scenario, but it happens everyday, all over the world. ## Whenever there's an incident, save the recording on your PC incase someone tries to blame you etc. Dashcams re-record once the SD card is full, so buy the largest SD card that the dashcam can handle., and format the SD card in the camera when you first put it in and reformat the SD card every couple of months to stop any bugs from popping up. No dashcam is "very" reliable, which is why I run 2. 2 out the front and 2 out the back. I recommend fishing the cord through the headliner at the top of the windshield, then down the side inside of the rubber seal by the hinge, then under the dash and back towards the engine, all the way left, then have it come forward. That way it's not too susceptible of getting snagged on somebody's bag etc. There are tons of YouTube videos showing this method. This is all I've ever used.

**Make sure** whatever dashcam you buy has a **capacitor and NOT a battery.** In the summer the interior of cars can get well above 120° and **cook the battery**. A capacitor will survive, no problem. The same for the winter, the **batteries fail in the constant, deep cold,** capacitors don't. **Viofo A129 Plus Duo, or A229, or A119 are all very inexpensive but quite reliable { as far as dashcams go }** \- I've done a lot of research into dashcams. **EVERYONE should have them. They can save hundreds of thousands of dollars, years of stress and keep you out of prison.** Insurance fraud has sky rocketed since the 2009 economy crash. Elaborate schemes can cause injury and death, but it can also net the fraudsters a ton of money. I have been using Viofo for about 10 years. I replace the camera's every 3 years or so, just so they can be as stable as possible. I replace the SD cards every 2 cameras { 6 years }. **Make sure you get the biggest SD card the camera can hold { so you can record many hours, in case a complaint is made against you the following day etc. }. AND get a SD card manufacturer that Viofo recommends**, or you can have problems with recordings. { I never have }. Also, if an "incident" happens, even if it's minor, copy the few mins before, in case a police officer shows up a week later { your footage would have overwritten that footage by then } **Make sure you reformat the SD card INSIDE of the camera once in awhile.** Sometimes dashcams jam up and fail to record or shut off during recording and reformatting the SD card can keep this from happening.

Easy enough instal, no splicing into factory wiring etc. If you instal yourself, just be careful when removing trim around airbags and be absolutely certain that any cable does not go between a passanger/driver and an airbag. If the airbag goes, the last thing you need is a cable whipping around the cab.

It lasted the longest but it's too big for the windshield. Most of the above beep or talk way too much (RedTiger model chatters way too much), not to mention two of them died within a year. All were hard-wired. I'm going to try the Garmin because I don't want a screen but I've heard the resolution isn't great compared to some others. It shouldn't be this hard to find a dashcam with no screen, high resolution (front and rear) and a product that lasts longer than 10 months.

None of these cameras had a Sony Starvis 2 sensor, yet if you pay a little extra, you can step up to the newer version of the Viofo A119, the A119 Mini2 which does, and which would beat the Viofo A119 V3 that won this test in the same way that the V3 beat most of the competition! Having stepped up to current generation Sony Starvis 2, you can then step up to the 4K version, which is another significant step, and then you get a bit stuck on image quality and going for a far more expensive Blackvue or Thinkware is currently a step down in image quality relative to the 4K Viofo A229 Pro, only reason you would take that step is to get cloud access to your parked car, but that is an expensive choice, both in cash and in license plate readability. Best image quality currently is the Viofo A329 series, which not only has Sony Starvis 2 sensors, but has also moved to the next generation of processors, which is bringing quite a few advantages.

Have a Viofo A229 Plus. 2k front and rear. If you want 4k you can get the A229 Pro model. If you’re installing it yourself, just make sure you put the wires behind the airbags. Or pay $100 to have Best Buy install it for you.

I recently installed a VIOFO 229 Pro. It takes some time, but it’s not difficult. Hardwiring is easier than it sounds and is the superior option, especially if you want your camera to record when parked. Someone mentioned battery drain, but most cameras come with a voltage cut off that you adjust (e.g. 12.4, 12.2, 12, and 11.8). I have mine set to 12.2v and it usually records 4 hours post parking at a low bit rate. I did a ton of research before buying, so if you have any questions, send me a DM.

I second the VIOFO, ought mine on Amazon, hardwire installed it myself in 15 minutes, comes on and records when the car comes on, shuts off when car is off. You can buy it online and any local car stereo shop can install it in minutes if you aren’t comfortable hiding the wires and using a fuse tap yourself.

I hardwired a VIOFO 229 pro into my wife’s Rav, the power block comes with a switch you can set to a voltage where you want it to stop drawing from the battery to ensure it doesn’t drain it too low when in park mode. If you’re going to use the cig lighter adapter then it will only work when the vehicle is on so no concerns on battery drain.

Viofo A229. I got a fast 64g mini sd card for it. Front only. I wired a 12vdc-5v usb little box, into existing wires when I pulled the glasses & two lights compartment out. Lots of harnesses there. So the usb box is hidden in roof. Viofo usb cable connects to it. I bought from Amazon the converter box and a bunch of various male Toyota harnesses that end in wires. Took pics of the females that give power. One I got was for powered rear view mirror. Use a tester to find more than one live wire when car is on, and can power the converter and camera. One was just a signal +12v not enough power, another was fine. Camera has a capacitor to power save memory to the card when you turn off the car. This was like a 2 hour job taking my time. 3/10 difficulty.

Highly recommend the VIOFO A229 Pro, I personally own this after a lot of research, it was between this and if I recall a Blackvue at the time almost a year ago. Installed it in my 2024 Telluride. I went with the 3 channel system, however if you don't care/need/want the indoor camera, you can just save the money and get the 2 channel system. It was an easy DIY installation, and I bought Auto Trim Tool Kit off Amazon that made it even easier to run the wires in the trim.

I'm in Belgium as well, have been looking into dashcams a lot lately... If I'm not mistaken, they simply offer the of the shelf pioneer dashcams. From what I read/saw, those are fine, but better ones are around... I ended up going with the Viofo A229 pro, which seems to be very good... which skoda do you have? as of the new octavia upwards, they habe a usb-c in the rearview mirror console. (Disclaimer, I haven't been able to test it yet myself). I have heard people recomending against the nextbase dashcam (which you get from Auto 5), as it has a lithium battery installed, which can get damaged by direct sunlight (not very advantageous for something sitting on your windscreen). Viofo and many others use capacitors, which are supposedly safer? I myself ended up getting the dashcam from the following shop: https://www.dashcam-shop.com/ (I'm not associated with them, but had a good experience.) It's a german shop, but free delivery to Belgium. Should you go for it there, little tipp: code DDG5 gives you a 5% discount :)

The camera records to a micro sd card that is installed in the main camera module. Footage from all cameras is stored on the card. To access the footage your camera creates a wifi hotspot that your phone connects to in order to facilitate the data transfer. This model uses 5 ghz network which is considerably faster than previous 2.4 ghz models I have used. Normally I used pop the card in my computer and copy all the files for easier processing but if you need a quick copy to share in the moment then wifi transfer allows for this. The wifi connection also allows you to remote view the cameras. I don’t want to type a bunch of unnecessary info so just ask me questions if you’re curious. I’ve had 2 different cams in 2 different cars so I’m pretty well versed in the space

Yes, I bought them separately. Viofo camera from Aliexpress (a bit cheaper there) and Dongar adapter from their website or amazon. Based on my own research, I found more and favourable reviews on viofo cameras and at the time fewer on fitcamx. The biggest one was Viofo's great performance reading license plates in overcast and night conditions. If you want to save a buck here and there, aliexpress sells the viofo cameras cheaper (make sure to buy from viofo merchant on aliexpress) and amazon is starting to sell no name brand powered mirror adapters too. For anyone else interested...the powered mirror adapter is able to power front and rear camera.

I had two Viofo A119S dashcams and they would write corrupted files every few days or so. Tried working with Support, changing settings, memory cards, etc. and nothing helped over nine months. Went to Street Guardian SGGCX2PRO+ and they've been super reliable for over seven years in our three Subarus. Each has a rear camera. I would recommend getting these (and similar SG models) used, because they are cheap and still high quality. Now I'm back to try Viofo again (A229 Pro) for my new car, because Street Guardian is essentially a legacy brand by this point. Hoping for the best.

The A229 streams easily to my iPhone, much easier than my older A129. So, older cam got put in car that isn’t used as much, and new A229s live in the household’s daily drivers.

I use a Viofo 4K unit off of Amazon. Works great. Using a fuse tap kit I hardwired it to a fuse that's only hot when the truck is on, but it has a separate connection that's always hot and provides constant power. So when it senses that the truck is on it records consistently. When it senses that the truck is off it goes into a monitoring mode that will only record when there's motion detected or the gyro is triggered. It has a battery monitor that senses the battery's voltage and will disable monitoring mode if the battery voltage gets too low. Works perfectly. It has a rear camera too. Records to an SD card but has Wifi to beam video to your phone via their app if you want. Was in an accident a couple months ago and had the video footage on my phone before the cops even showed up. Saved my ass with the insurance.

The Powercell 8 runs the camera when it's parked, and the car charges the powercell when I'm driving. As long as I drive the car every day for at least 30 minutes, the powercell always keeps a charge. Dropping the headliner and running all the wires wasn't that bad. I have the Viofo A229 Dual dashcam installed with a hardwiring kit in my car and in retrospect I feel I should have gone for something cheaper. So to you I would recommend something like the 70mai A510 dual dashcam. I feel it's better to have a dual dashcam in a country like ours. It helped me just recently in my insurance claims process when a 3 wheeler driving on the opposite side of the road rammed my fender and took off my front bumper as I was making a U-turn. This model sells for 14k on Amazon, has a Sony Starvis 2 sensor and basically all the features my Viofo dashcam has plus a lot more. I would recommend going through some reviews to know if you can turn off the "ADAS" features of this camera as I can see those being quite annoying. And yes I would recommend hardwiring for a nice factory finish. That way the front socket can be free to plug in a high watt mobile charger to get fast charging on your phone. Hardwiring will enable you to use parking recording. To be honest there are no cons to hardwiring except the knowledge and some skill needed to do this installation. I feel there are enough tutorial videos on YouTube to help you do the installation yourself but if you're not comfortable doing it, you could pay a professional installer for it. You can buy the hardwiring kit and a CPL filter (if there is one) for the 70mai A510 and still be nowhere close to the budget you'd need for the Viofo A229 whose sensor is now last gen.

I don't even have a 4k TV or computer either, I just use the interactive zoom feature on VLC Player. 256GB is enough for more than a whole day, even with front and rear cams like the Viofo has. I have the next step up from the one they tested and the Viofo is great, the 2 channel was easy to run, and I used a dongar pro, so power was super easy. https://preview.redd.it/fy856ri9mope1.png?width=1440&format=png&auto=webp&s=5afc3127ef5ff91ab75ebfce0f5e4b6e6f553df4

I just installed my A229 2-channel cameras yesterday, I highly recommend using the ASC connector that you can buy off of Hachi Electronics. Makes it so much easier to hardwire than messing around with the fusebox.

Yup, it's been great so far. I need to find a slightly more elegant way to route the cable for the rear camera, given that it's way too long for the tiny 86 interior. I currently have most of it coiled and shoved inside the right rear C-pillar trim panel (which is a great place for it, I just need to clean it up so the panel can actually close).

VIOFO is a really popular brand. The front-rear one I installed in my cars have caught some interesting parked moments. The cameras look like TEMU junk but they are not. They work really well and are well respected among car enthusiasts.

Viofo front and rear. With all dashcams, hardwire them for 24 hour recording.
