Eureka Specialta? Edit to add that I personally am staying away from made in China stuff as much as possible. Eureka makes excellent grinders and have been making grinders for coffee for over 100 years. I have a Mignon Filtro that I use for filter coffee and I'm extremely happy with it. The Specialta has 55mm burrs and is very durable and well built. I also enjoy the flavor from the Eureka burrs that I've tasted. And I absolutely love their adjustment knob.

Eureka Filtro I think is probably the best affordable coffee grinder. It won't be $100, but it'll be less than $200. I have heard that the Bodum burr grinder for $39 is surprisingly good, though I wouldn't expect it to last forever. General consensus though is the Baratza Encore for around $100, and you can upgrade the burr set for like $30 at some point in the future

Eureka Filtro. Flat burr grinder, around or even less than $200, produces minimal fines and makes a very clear and flavorful cup of coffee. Highly recommend

Eureka Filtro, Perfetto, or similar options. Excellent uniformity and better build quality. In my experience, Fellow products, while sleek, often suffer from poor quality and customer support.

Think about your workflow first, single dose, timed grinding, gravimetric, manual, etc., and take it from there.  You should also consider that you want from a grinder, clarity for light roast, body for darker roasts, etc. Different grinders (and burrs) excel at different things.  If you don't want to think too much about it, get whatever Eureka Mignon grinder fits your preferred workflow and call it a day.

Niche Zero is the best at this, but as you know, out of your price range. Maybe the answer is saving up a little while longer, or buying used. Any eureka mignon grinder you can find in your price range/preferred workflow would be next best. Check espressocoffeeshop.com/en/ for deals. Despite what you heard, that they have flat burrs has no bearing on this. I just brought back some beans some Palermo and they taste pretty much the same as they did in the caffe with a Eureka mignon zero. It'll take a while to switch back and forth for pourover though. You'll find this on a lot of espresso grinders though - small dials and worm drives are slow, but steady, for making small adjustments when dialing in espresso. Also important is that you buy dark roast coffee, preferably with some robusto mixed in. You won't be able to make Italian style espresso with med-light roast beans...

This is my set up and I can vouch for it. Its not super consistent but for milk based drinks, it works great. I have been, touch wood, getting some tasty expresso lately but that was after I did burr alignment using shims.

Hey folks, long time lurker here. Tried to lay it out there as well as possible in the title, but I'm really interested in a new electric grinder. Tldr; * Electric * Hopper * Timed * Common burr size * Filter/pourover and french press * Roughly $600-$1000usd budget. My use case is for virtually exclusively pourover and french press. I actually switch between these two pretty frequently, so that's worth consideration. Because of the multiple people in my home using the grinder, and the volume of coffee that we go through, I'm very much interested in something with a small hopper (200-300g), simple automation, etc. I have no interest in a single dose grinder, and despite there being many extremely high quality options in this range, this becomes very limiting in the modern grinding scene. I'm also not interested in all of the tubular shaped form factors out there, but that's mostly eliminated by avoiding single dose focused options. Budget isn't a massive concern, but I'd like to keep it somewhere in the $600 to $1,000 USD range. It feels like the Eureka Mignon series is really my wheelhouse here but reviews seem pretty mixed. Especially the grind size dial, when I'm expecting to be going between filter and french press often The Mahlkonig x54 is an alternative, too, but seems to struggle in the filter range. What am I overlooking? I'm moving up from an old baratza and would love some new perspectives, but 98% of the reviews I run across are for super purpose built single dose options and those just aren't for me. Feel free to just link me to other posts...Ive tried to do some searching but have little faith in reddit's search quality. Thank you! E: Thanks for everybody's input. I ended up going with the x54. It did seem to have the best combination of things that meet my needs, especially since I'm not going to be single dosing daily. I have a sense that while there are probably slightly better moderate upgrade picks in terms of grind consistency, it's going to be a huge leap over where I'm at today and that overall it will be a good balance for the dollar. It's also nice that it's currently on sale for around $510 USD, which feels like a pretty solid value to feature set. Especially considering that this was $750 a year or two ago.

Awesome, really appreciate that perspective. I think one of the things that might be working in my favor at this point is that my old baratza is so staticky that almost anything is going to feel like an improvement, or at least a parallel move. Between the x54 and the Eureka, I prefer the form factor that the Eureka offers, but everyone pretty much unanimously says grind size dial is a total pain in the butt if you're switching between filter and espresso on a regular basis. I don't expect to use it for espresso at all, but even going between French press and pour over is probably enough movement to feel that pain.

If anyone wants a eureka mignon that can grind espresso for around $200, I just bought a filtro from Seattle coffee gear for $150. Then I bought some Eureka 50mm replacement espresso burrs off Amazon for $33. Took 10 minutes to put the new burrs on. I’ve been using it for a month and I love it. It was on sale when I bought it, it’s back up to 189 now.

If you want to grind on demand with a hopper, then one of the Eureka Mignons. They are great grinders for someone who goes through a bag of beans at a time. If you like to frequently switch beans and want to single dose, then DF54 or DF64.

No, different grinders serve different origins/roasts, there is no one size fits all grinder. DF and Eureka flat burrs (both of them w/out the clump crusher, generally any flat burr type profile) produce grounds which you can use across light/medium/dark roasted espresso and v60's. That's not to say they don't have their cons, they're less forgiving and your medium/dark roasts won't be as sweet.

I picked the Eureka Mignon partly because it seems like a solid BIFL product. Very easy to take apart and service with nothing but a screwdriver. Made with excellent materials. Priced to compete with grinders 4x the cost. I have no regrets and would not hesitate to recommend it. If you're grinding anything other than espresso, the Filtro line starts at under $300 and is the same as the other models but with slightly smaller burrs (50mm vs 55mm). It has no problem grinding finely, so I would imagine you could get a decent espresso grind from this model too. Also, you can always purchase the larger burrs, install them, and turn it into an espresso grinder.

Get a eureka mignon filtro and swap out the burrs to espresso burrs (and 3d print a bunch of tools to make workflow a LOT simpler for single dosing).

I was seeing a lot of coffee left behind when I used it too. I did see more clumps but because I would WDT afterwards anyway, it seems be a non issue for me (I prefer lower retention to no clumps)

Wow thanks for the details. I think I should consider the Mazzer, though I really love the aesthetics of the sculptor. I’m planning to budget for a grinder upgrade maybe a year from now, who knows what new grinders are going to be available by then 😂 For now I’m really enjoying my eureka mignon and not going to let the idea of a new grinder ruin it for me

The eureka mignon filtro is $190, it can in theory do espresso (it can definitely do it if you swap it out for the espresso burrs ~$30), but could be a very good filter coffee grinder. I would recommend that over a hand grinder, simply because I strongly dislike hand grinding

I currently have the eureka mignon filtro with espresso burrs. I also ended up making a few mods (tilt base, bellows, upgraded dial) to make it more useable, but that also meant spending as much as the df54, to make it work pretty much like the df54

I have the $189 filtro with espresso burrs. I almost exclusively use this for espresso (though sometimes I do enjoy some v60, maybe once every two months or so). Going back and forth works, but only if you have the dial mod (something like: https://aroespresso.com/products/grinder-setting-dial-for-eureka-mignon ) The filter burrs could work, if you’re only using darkish roasts (and not decaf). Though you tend to get a little more range with the espresso burrs

Glad you’re happy with the smart grinder pro - but I would caution OP with this option; many haven’t been happy with theirs, consistency of grind, uneven shots, breaking down, stalling etc. a home Appliance grinder versus other options that are prosumer grinders. But, I’m super happy you’ve had continued success with yours :) The eureka mignon line is fantastic and will likely be your best bet

I'd personally get a filter-only grinder. Wait for a sale, grab an Ode Gen 2, and buy an espresso grinder when the time comes (DF54 is insane value). The best grinders for double duty are medium-high clarity conical grinders like Comandante, K-Ultra etc IMO. The Femobook A5 and Lagom Casa are a couple electric grinders that are in the same category (I haven't tried either, but they're well reviewed). I previously used a Lagom Mini for both filter and espresso and it was fantastic. The DF54 and 64 both do a decent job at filter, but it's not great. The 64 mm SSP MP burrs are often recommended as a do-it-all burr set, but they are for a very specific espresso profile and they are not beginner friendly for espresso. I didn't enjoy the espresso with them. SSP Cast are supposed to be decent for both, but you're giving up the clarity everyone is always seeking. A couple other decent options that I've tried are Ditting 54mm steel burrs in the Vario+ and Eureka's 50 mm brew burrs in an entry level mignon. The UX is not ideal with either of these setups compared to a grinder designed to single dose. If the Ditting burrs fit in the DF without crazy mods it would be a great option. Edit: I forgot to mention that there are now brew burrs available for the DF54. I'm planning to grab a set to try out once they're available in Canada.

The Svart will grind better, but it's not the most reliable grinder IMO. Mine barely lasted a year, and if I go by reviews I'm by far not the only one that had issue with it. See the other comment I posted below. If you want a simple conical burr grinder, you can probably get that for less than the Svart is in Europe. And if you're willing to spend a bit more you can get the cheapest Eureka filter grinder, which is a bit quirky but a very noticeable step up not only in terms of grind quality but also in terms of build quality.

You can decent and basic electric conical burr grinders for way less than 100€ if you shop around. At that price point it's usually just OEMs anyway, you don't gain much by spending closer to the 150€. That's not far from a Eureka Mignon Filtro, though.

Espresso is an expensive hobby so if you want to get into it, make sure your really into coffee. Beginners machines start at 500$ and grinders start at 200$ anything below those price points are not capable of making actual espresso. Beginner setup would look something like this. Bambino plus, paired with DF54, or Eurka mignon grinder. You of course can spend more, but that's just an example of the most "budget friendly" setup. Because it only goes up from there lmao.
