I switched a month ago because of this exact reason. My Apple watch would last 12-14 hours tops. It shut down during one of my runs and that was it. Bought the Garmin Forerunner 570 and haven’t looked back.

Forerunner 55 for the absolute basics. Forerunner 165 is the cheapest with a AMOLED screen. Forerunner 255, 265, 955 and 965 are just discontinued. In my opinion 955 is the most value for money as it includes mapping. 965 is the same watch as the 955, but with an AMOLED screen. If you don’t need mapping, then go for the 265. It is the same as the 965, but without maps. So if you can find a 955 that would be your best bet in my opinion. Forerunner 570 and 970 introduce unnecessary features, such as microphone & speaker, sapphire glass, shiny metal bezels all of which add nothing to running but do increase the price.

I've got a Fenix 6s Pro and I'm looking for a replacement now. Top of the list at the moment Forerunners 970, 965 and 570. I got the Fenix for Triathlon and now it seems that the Forerunners have caught up. I don't really use the music or maps I always have my phone. Same goes for most of the sports. I just want running, cycling and swimming, DSW, sleep tacking and training readiness.

Excellent. I'm in a similar boat moving on from my Fenix 6s Pro and choosing between the 570 and 965. I have no need for maps on my watch as all my runs are local or planned. Similarly I don't have a use case for an ECG on my watch. I've had music storage and Spotify on my watch for 5 years and I've used it twice as I always have my phone or race without headphones. I found a 570 on eBay for £330 compared to most asking £400 for a 570 or 965 so I snapped it up. Should arrive tomorrow.

The reason I like my 570 is mainly the sizing options. The 42mm is perfect me along with the fact that I got a 25% discount code that expired after 10 days. My fitbit sense 1 just completely died on me. Essentially, it came down to the 265s or the 570. I went with the updated version.

Just got a 570 (after trying the 165 and really liking it). I'm a diehard Apple user, but after a few days with the Garmin I can see the appeal (hence my upgrade). I'm not sure I'm ready to wear two watches considering my other is an Ultra 2... we'll see lol.

I bought and returned a 165 (realizing I LOVED the Garmin system, coming from an Apple Watch) and got the 570 for the coaching, recovery and additional training metrics... But, before I jumped to the 570 I strongly considered the 265 Music. Music on the Garmin has been better for me than using my iPhone (using the Garmin Spotify app).

You’ll really love the 970, but you’d probably be happy with the 570 or I’d suggest looking at the 965 also. I loved my 965 but handed it down and got the 970 because as dumb as some people will think it is, I really wanted the flashlight and bonus strobe light for night runs. I miss the extra battery of my 965 but it’s not less enough that I care.

I have a 570 and would say the evening report is useless at least for me. I get the message 1.5 hours before bed time, and get the morning report right after I wake up. Also the skin temperature feature provides nothing to me. I am female but it doesn't even do anything for my cycle tracking. However I would go for 970 if I was a runner. It's light weight & future proof, perfect for runners. I like the new UI, it's still sometimes glitchy but in general the design is really good and the screen is beautiful.

Still one of the best when it comes to performance/price. Performance is super nice, long battery time, many functions. But ofc if you have enough money, go for a newer model like FR 570. I dont know much about swimming. Probably the FR 9xx is better for that.

I also have a Samsung watch6, and it has trouble with the heart monitor because of my tattoos, so I have to wear it like you do when run for the same reasons. I recently got the forerunner 570, and that does a lot better on the outside, but it has to be positioned right.

I had the FR570 for 3 weeks and yesterday it died (won't turn on) for some reason. I took it off to wash my hands, placed on counter and when I went to put it back on minutes later, it was off. Tried to turn on to no avail. Tried the hard reset option and nothing. Tried plugging it to power and turning it on, resetting and nothing.. Garmin support is helping me out but for only 3 weeks old, not sure I'm trusting the quality on a replacement going forward.. Could it be first year bugs? Should have gone with the tried and true 265?

they are fairly different devices, Garmin is over 2x the price, and has features that the Suunto Run doesn't have such as 3rd party apps, incl. spotify etc., nfc payments, live tracking, plentiful support for bike sensors (Suunto Run only works with power meters), and then the coaching features you mentioned. Suunto does have a (pretty basic) coaching/training plan builder, but that's not compatible with the Run. Full comparison on DCR's site here: [Product Comparison Calculator | DC Rainmaker](https://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-comparison-calculator?type=watch&ids=163117%2C162960#results) I guess all depends on whether these differences are important to you and worth the big cost difference?

first, you won't run any faster or better with a new garmin, so what do you expect from a new watch? I would go with the fr 265 as sombody wrote the 255 is outdated. But I have to admit, every Garmin is outdated after release because of their policies, you won't get any funcional updates after release, only bug fixes. So the 265 was followed by the actual 570. BUT, the only FR with maps and navigation (which was essential for me) is the fr 970 [Garmin Running Watch Comparison | Which Watch](https://www.garmin.com/en-US/which-watch/running/compare/) even the 570 lacks maps and navigation. You could go with the FR 965 which is the previous model to the fr 970... if you don't need navigation check with the 265 (cheaper) or 570 (newer one, mor features)

agree, as a runner preparing for half marathon I wouldn't go without training metrics such as training readiness [Garmin Running Watch Comparison | Which Watch](https://www.garmin.com/en-US/which-watch/running/compare/) The FR 570 is the successor of the 265 (which should be cheaper now), in my opinion the newer sensors are a plus for the 570, the phone functionality is more a feature to ignore as you still need a smartphone paired and connected.

I’ve tried both and have to say that the Instinct 3 is probably the better deal for most people. It was heavily criticized after release, but among the more recent models, it offers excellent value for money. The advantages of the Forerunner 570 compared to the Instinct 3 are music storage, the newer heart rate sensor (with skin temperature tracking but no ECG), the brighter display, and the ability to take calls or use voice commands. On the other hand, the Instinct 3 is more rugged, has a built-in flashlight, and even in the smaller AMOLED version, offers significantly better battery life. Most people don’t make calls with their watch, the older heart rate sensor has never caused me any issues, and the Instinct 3’s display is bright enough. That leaves music storage and skin temperature tracking. The latter isn’t very well integrated and can’t even be viewed on the watch itself. The lack of music storage is definitely a drawback, but if you can live with that, the Instinct 3 offers almost the same functionality, has a more exciting look, the incredibly useful flashlight, and insane battery life.

Hello everyone, when the FR570 was released a few months ago together with the FR970, there was already plenty of criticism. While the FR970 became noticeably more expensive compared to the FR960, it was largely praised for its immense range of features and positioned itself as a cheaper Fenix 8 with only minimal compromises. The FR570, on the other hand, was simply missing too many features, so almost every reviewer emphasized that the $200 premium for the FR970 was worth it. With the release of the Venu 4, the situation has become even more pronounced, and I honestly wonder what justification the FR570 even has anymore. The Venu 4 offers virtually all the functions of the FR570 for the same price and additionally provides: - LED flashlight - ECG - higher-quality stainless steel casing - slightly longer battery life - additional health features like Health Status (which the FR570 will probably get eventually) - training suggestions not only for running & cycling but also for fitness and walking - generally more sport profiles The only advantages of the FR570 compared to the Venu are: - physical buttons - a few more swimming functions - slightly lighter weight (though this is probably hardly noticeable) Am I missing something here? Garmin’s product strategy often just seems totally inconsistent.

The price difference between Vivoactive 6 and FR570 is similar to that between FR570 and FR970.And somehow the surcharge for the FR970 seems more reasonable than that for the FR570.

Hu there fenix is strong, i wish i had bigger wrist. My foreunner 970 is already big so cant imagine fenix on my tiny wrist lol. But both fenix and forerunners trully have real running metrics. I cant believe the venu 4 does not even have daily suggestions based on pac and only has them based on heart rate. A big no no for a runner targetting an specific distance and time. I have been rethibkibg to sell my 970 for a 570 due to the size of 43mm. But i may miss battery, flashlight, running tolerance and impact load more than size lol. Like my wife says you need to give up on something.  4 years ago i used to train daily on hills and fast runs too, so i injured myself like crazy. Thus the reasoning behind running tolerance as it would guide me to increase mileage in a safe manner.

I was in a similar position and just ordered the 570 in the 42mm size. My Venu 2s was great, but it was time for an upgrade and since the 570 is brand new, it should be future-proof as well. I don’t have any data yet as it's on its way, but I noticed my Venu 2s would sometimes lose my pace when I was in wooded areas. It would also occasionally lose my heart rate, so I’m excited to try the new HR sensor in the 570. I’ll try to update you in a few days once I receive it. I know some people have recommended the 265 or Vivoactive models, but the vivoactive lacks a lot of running features and an altimeter so it can't track any change in elevation. The 265 is fully made of plastic and does look quite cheap. The forerunner 570 has a ton of running metrics so you would be good in case you ever do start running. I suggest using the garmin comapre feature on their site. It's a great tool to check the differences in feature.

r/GarminWatches • Which Forerunner to chose? ->
Reddit Icon
EPICxNITRI • about 2 months ago

A Forerunner will give you training readiness and DSW, which are big additions to help keep you conditioned for upcoming races. The Vivoactive also doesn’t have an altimeter, so it can’t track elevation changes if that matters to you. I recently upgraded from a venu 2s to a Forerunner 570, and it was a huge upgrade since I started running a lot more. You also would get access to PacePro with a newer Forerunner which is nice to help you keep pace during races. If money doesn't matter, it's worth it. Otherwise, your vivoactive is fine for just tracking runs.

Just got a FR 570 to replace a Fenix 7 - WAY more comfortable to wear because lighter weight and less chunky profile, also maybe the lugs sit different relative to the back of the watch, so it lies flatter on my wrist than the difference in thickness might suggest. Probably less durable/beatable than a Fenix long term, but so far so good. Excellent choice for your use case. Note that if you want maps you’ll need the top model.

With the 570 it’s probably tracks it about 70-80%of the time that I’ve noticed so far. Although my tattoo on the wrist isn’t fully filled I have a lot of skin break. So it reads decent. On my girlfriend’s vivoactive 5 it reads like 30% of the time I had hers on. 570 just has better sensors.

Sounds like a good plan. I can't remember which Fenix was the first to be a dive watch but the only other is the much more expensive Descent. If you don't need the additional features from the Descent and the Fenix replaces a dive computer, it seems like you end up getting a really good value. It's worth comparing to some of the Forerunners if the dive aspect doesn't look that strong to you. I think the 255, 265 and 570 do everything you need for actual training functions. The 955, 965 and 970 add maps and the 970 adds a running tolerance function that might be helpful for marathon training. How much do you run now? Do you have a training plan picked out? While Garmin has all of Daily Suggested Workouts, adaptive training plans, and fully pre-set training plans, they all have their issues for a marathon. I actually quite like DSW but more for filling in the gaps and helping maintain balance. https://lifehacker.com/health/what-its-like-to-train-for-a-race-with-garmins-training-plans

DC Rainmaker has some pretty good reviews, including of Amazfit et al. Generally people who like smartwatches generally find Garmin just ok at being a smartwatch. I feel like they're good enough to find out I really dislike them in general without spending extra money, but my wife and daughter both wear smartwatches most of the time. As a sports watch, I think the bottom-tier Forerunner is pretty disappointing. The 200- and 500-series models give you a much broader feature set, though of course it comes at a price. I think the 255 is probably still peak value since the 265 got a nicer screen and price hike without a lot of new features and the 570 came out earlier this year and is the current model. The Instinct 2 could also be a good pick. There's a comparison tool on Garmin's website. DC Rainmaker too, I think, and he'll let you compare across brands. When I came back to running in like 2011 or so, I just wanted an interval timer. Since then I've really appreciated pace and heart rate feedback and tracking and lately training load/load focus and Daily Suggested Workouts. Also lactate threshold auto detection because that field test sucks!

So one always thinks they need a touchscreen on Garmin, and everyone really feels they need it, but after just one month, almost everyone I know, says they almost never touch the screen, the ui is so obviously made for the buttons and that also saves the battery. The exact same thing applies to amoled, everyone’s (except those with serious eye sight issues), I’ve heard say they would have loved mip cause it’s always on without consuming battery - so you can always keep experimenting with watches faces without fast battery consumption. Thus I don’t know whether you should get the 965 or not, but you could consider it on all these metrics. If you asked me which one, I’d say enduro 3, and if you can fork up more money Fenix 8 solar. 965 has the older 4th gen sensor and that’s the heart of the watch. If you’re on absolute budget, and are ok with older sensor then 255 and if you need a new sensor but don’t have the budget for enduro 3 then 570. But that’s cause I am very biased to forerunner.

If you need the better heart sensor then 570, else 165, but if you need 570’s features but 165 price and can live with mip (which is better battery wise imo) plus the older sensor (same in 165) then 255. Btw the evening report is total bs so 255 doesn’t miss anything in that way.

Those buttons matter for runners, trying to touch screen in the rain or bad weather is horrible. Also I prefer the larger screen size to the venu4. The 570 is widely available in my country so much so that getting retailers to price match is much easier. I got a retailer to price match and beat by 10% my 570 from a Garmin 25% discount, effectively the same price as a 265 rrp. Would I pay full rrp for a 570 hell no!

If you want a mic and speaker your cheapest option is the venu 3, whith likely best option the forerunner 570 (there is also the more expensive and fully featured FR970 and the top end fenix 8 or the multi-use venu x1 if you want rectangular). If you can live without mic and speaker your cheapest option is the FR165 Music, however I personally think you get way more by going for the Vivoactive 5 or 6 as it offers more in terms of other recreational leisure activities, or if you want more training metrics and fitness features around running, cycling and swimming then the FR265

Just swapped from an Apple series 9 to a garmin 570. There’s a couple things that Apple does better: - just a hey siri to start a timer vs needing to hit a button for the garmin - Apple health visualizations are generally better - notifications are less annoying with the apple, why does it take up the whole screen and show for 30 seconds garmin? - much easier to change bands What garmin does better - actual buttons, main reason for me to change, needed for running in the rain for me - more health stats (am enjoying body battery) also prefer how they calculate some stats (like hrv and resting) - way more customizations for you watch face while running, can fit 7 widgets and I don’t know how many faces. Apple can only customize two, with something like four widgets.

If you ever see yourself running in the rain needing to do any manual lapping feature or use the touchscreen quickly, don’t get an Apple Watch, it’s not very usable. If you are in long sleeves in the rain, you need to lock the touchscreen to prevent accidental touches. But that prevents you from using the touchscreen without holding to unlock for a few seconds. So if you are doing intervals, it can be hard to end the interval quickly. If you do run in the rain, get a watch with buttons, Ive also had issues with digital crowns not working well with wet hands. 165 is a great value, hard to top it. Does pretty much everything you need a running watch to do. Buttons, accurate heart rate monitor, manual lapping, more than enough watch faces for activities, good gps. Started with this before springing for the 570. 570 is double the price for not a lot more unless you’re deep in the running game. The differences that stand out for me are the metal buttons, more customization for watch faces during activities, better screen. Voice command for timers. Overall better build quality. There’s some additional training features that I don’t find very valuable. Despite what it sounds like I really like the 570 so far, just wish it was a bit cheaper.

Those are basically the same (including 965,570,970). However, I hate 265/965 curved screen which can get scratched easily and only worked with plastic screen protectors.

Venu 3 likely won’t get the advanced training features in updates. Venu 4 adds them and keeps the sleeker look, while the 570 leans sportier with better buttons. Stick with 3 if you’re fine as is, go 4 for style + training metrics, or 570 if performance matters most

Since you’re running 10–20 km almost every day, the FR570 or FR965 make the most sense. They’ve got the latest sensors, the most accurate GPS, and all the running metrics that actually help you keep pace, watch your cadence, and avoid injuries. The 570 is the straightforward runner’s watch, while the 965 gives you the same tools but with a sharper AMOLED screen and a bit more of a smartwatch vibe. The 265 is fine if you don’t need every advanced stat, and the 165 works for casual use, but for the long haul the 570 or 965 will serve you best:)

Hey Folks! [Forerunner 570](https://preview.redd.it/26hy2p8l225f1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=78f1c1fa8da39122549b99d0fd756a44a4d401bd) [Battery Comparison](https://preview.redd.it/bxaut11x925f1.jpg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f68f6bdada6d9ab2c3186be58fb0bd1d9e2daa9) I'm Chuanyi, a programmer who loves diving into new tech and running marathons (PB 122 half / 254 full). I recently got my hands on the Forerunner 570 and, after putting it through its paces alongside my experience with the new Forerunner 970, I wanted to share my thoughts. There's been some confusion about where the 570 fits in Garmin's lineup – is it just a 275 that never was, an upgraded 265, or a "lite" version of the 965? **First Impressions & Design (Drawing from 570 script & 970 review comparisons):** At first glance, the 570 does resemble the 265 with its 22mm Quick Release bands and how the "Start" text and other markings are printed on the inner black bezel area, rather than etched onto a metal outer bezel like higher-end models. However, on closer inspection, it shares a lot of DNA with the 965/970 family. The overall silhouette, similar thickness and weight, and the addition of a refined aluminum alloy bezel really elevate its feel. It’s not just a simple rehash. **Key Highlights of the 570 (from 570 script, with parallels to 970 observations):** * **Super Bright Screen:** This was immediately noticeable. The AMOLED screen is significantly brighter than previous models, making it incredibly clear even in direct sunlight, similar to what I noted with the 970's best-ever screen. Compared to the 965, the 570's brightness is very impressive. * **Latest Elevate V5 Optical HR Sensor:** The 570 features Garmin's newest Elevate V5 HR module. My tests (comparing with a Polar H10 and the 965) showed that the V5 and V4 HR performances are very similar overall. The V5 (on the 570) seemed slightly more responsive than the V4 (on the 965) during sprints/accelerations. * **Important Note (ECG):** Unlike the "full-blooded" Elevate V5 in the Forerunner 970 which will support ECG, the 570's module lacks the surrounding conductive electrodes. So, despite the metal bezel, ECG functionality is not possible on the 570. * **Refined UI:** Garmin has paid more attention to UI details. When you switch to the widget glance view, the watch face background is still subtly visible with a frosted glass effect, giving it a premium feel – a touch I also appreciated on the 970. Font size adjustment is also more granular than on the 965. * **Triathlon Coach Function:** This is a welcome addition to the 2-series line, offering adaptive training plans based on your performance, recovery, and health status. * **Microphone & Speaker:** You can now issue voice commands, use your phone's voice assistant like Siri or Google Assistant, and, most practically, answer and make calls directly from the watch (though your phone needs to be in Bluetooth range!). This is similar to the 970's new mic/speaker capabilities. * **Garmin Share:** This is one of the most impressive new software features I’ve seen in a year! It allows wireless sharing of training courses, tracks, etc., with other Garmin users nearby – very secure and convenient. **Performance Testing (Focus on 570, with 970 data for context):** * **Heart Rate:** As mentioned, during a 10km tempo run, the 570 and 965 (both optical HR) showed some initial delay compared to a Polar H10 chest strap, which is a known limitation of optical HR. However, overall, both watches were very close to the Polar H10. * **GPS Accuracy (Multi-band GNSS & SatIQ):** The 570 supports multi-band and SatIQ. In my 10km test, the 965 recorded 10.08km and the 570 recorded 10.07km – an incredibly small difference, especially considering the inner/outer track variance from wearing watches on different wrists. Overlaying the tracks showed very high congruence. This mirrors the high accuracy I found with the 970, 965, and 570 during a 30km run, where differences were minimal and mostly occurred at water stops due to per-second refresh accumulating slight errors. * **Navigation & SURPRISING Battery Life in Navigation Mode**: * The 570 doesn't have built-in maps like the 965/970. However, **it CAN still do track navigation** if you import a route file. You can load and follow the route during your activity. Directional prompts might be less sensitive at sharp, small forks, so you need to pay attention. * Now, this is where my [Forerunner 970 review's](https://www.reddit.com/r/Garmin/comments/1l0pdtu/comment/mvzayvz/?context=3) battery test provides interesting context. During a 12-hour hike on Wugong Mountain, testing the 970, 965, and a 570 for extreme battery life, I had the **screen always on and a 22km track imported for navigation on all devices**. While the 970 didn't meet its official 21-hour claim under these tough conditions, the fact that the 570 (even without full maps) can handle such prolonged navigation with a track is impressive for its tier. The Forerunner 570 impressively concluded a demanding 12-hour extreme test with 26% battery still remaining. While I hadn't previously pushed the 570's battery to full depletion in that specific scenario during my Forerunner 965 review, it's worth noting that the 965's own two-year-old battery performed shockingly well under those same conditions. The 570's ability to handle extended navigation, even if just breadcrumb trails, is a significant plus. Furthermore, drawing parallels to the 965, whose flashlight feature proved invaluable during a dark descent on that hike (as highlighted in its review), the 570 would likely offer similar utility if equipped with an LED. **So, what IS the Forerunner 570?** * It’s **NOT** just a simple 265 upgrade. The addition of Triathlon Coach, the aluminum bezel, and voice functions are significant steps up. * It’s **NOT** just a 965 Lite either; it has unique software/hardware combinations and carves out its own niche. * **It's a competitive triathlon watch that can go head-to-head with the 965, with wins and losses on both sides**. The brighter screen, refined UI, flagship-level HR (minus ECG), and improved build quality make it compelling. **Regrets for the 570 (from 570 script):** 1. No built-in maps. 2. No ECG capability. **Who is the 570 for?** If you're a dedicated road runner, train for marathons, want high-accuracy data, and appreciate good aesthetics and daily user experience, the 570 is more than capable and very good to use. If you're a hardcore trail runner or have specific needs for offline maps, then the Forerunner 965 or the new 970 (with its full map capabilities ) would be better choices. The Forerunner 970, for example, has the added benefit of Step Speed Loss (SSL) when paired with the HRM-600 heart rate monitor, a new metric for running efficiency. This isn't a feature on the 570. The 970 is also positioned at a higher price point, especially if you want to unlock SSL. **Final Thoughts on 570:** The Forerunner 570 carves out a very interesting spot for itself. The ability to handle track navigation for extended periods, combined with its upgraded features, makes it a serious contender, even if it doesn't have the full map set or the absolute top-tier features of the 970. What are your thoughts on the new Forerunner 570? Where do you see it fitting in? This 570 discussion is based on my video [Forerunner 570 review(Chinese cc can be auto-translated)](https://youtu.be/zWcWY7FtnIk) and comparisons to my 970 findings [Forerunner 970 review](https://www.reddit.com/r/Garmin/comments/1l0pdtu/comment/mvzayvz/?context=3). I made an app GameraSnap, with which you can control your smartphone camera directly from your Garmin watch—perfect for workout selfies, group shots, or capturing your training achievements. Compatible with both iOS and Android, GameraSnap makes hands-free photography simple and fun. FYI:[https://garmintakephotos.com](https://garmintakephotos.com/)

I had the 265 it was great I loved it. Was my first Amoled and it worked so very well. You would be totally fine with this one. I'm only running halfs and fulls here and there so I chose the 570 because I don't need mapping. I will upgrade to one like that later if I decide to try Ultras or something, but the 570 has a beautiful screen, it's insanely bright, Evening Report, which might come to the 265 as well ,and better sounds as well as more training options. I am very happy with it. I also bought the HRM 600 to go with it too. I am selling my AWU2 but keeping my Series 10. Garmin does not make a great smart watch. Though they are getitng better all the time. And of course battery life for days unlike our Apple Watches. Good luck and let me know what you end up doing!

The most basic forerunner will be great for running,it has all you need in that respect. If you want to add music storage then the 265 will accommodate that. If you want to make calls via the watch you need a 570 as a minimum. You won't get the features of a pixel watch watch so just decide what you really need out of your watch that you can't just achieve with having your phone with you too.

I went from the Venu 2 plus to the 570 a few weeks ago. I had been waiting for the 4 to come out, but got impatient. I don't have any regrets. They did add a lot of the features I wanted to the 4, but it doesn't have auto max HR detection, and it only has HR based DSW, not pace based. The auto max HR detection was a must have, so I made the correct decision for me. I didn't really have an issue using the touch screen except sometimes after my swim and before I dried my hands, I couldn't scroll down to see my data. I'm just getting used to the 5 buttons, they are quite convenient.

Just got the 570 this weekend, had been waiting for this to come out but got impatient. I'm happy with my decision though, because I really wanted auto max HR, and the Venu doesn't have it. They are very similar in many ways though. Venu has flashlight, 570 has more buttons. 570 has DSW both pace and HR based, Venu only has it HR based. If you go on the Garmin website you can use the compare function to see them side by side.

Those are wildly different watches, price points and use cases. If this is what you are comparing I would personally go for the best watch I could afford. If the Fenix 8 is in your options go with that. Rather than buy something that will be obsolete soon, or fits your needs today go with the option you can grow into and will last you a while. I have personally gone the other way and every 2 years I have upgraded to a new watch that fits my needs. That is until this year when I bought a 970. Previously I have owned the vivofit, vivoactive, and Venu 2 Plus. What meets my needs today is the 570, what I will grow into is the 970. So if you can afford the Fenix 8 do that.

I'm an iOS developer. In fact I have an app, MyBodyWatch which tracks recovery. I'm a diehard Apple Watch user. I'm an avid gym goer and casual runner (15 miles/week). I recently purchased a Garmin Forerunner 165 to test the data received from the Garmin and sent to Apple Health to see if the data was usable for my app. Long story short, no. The Garmin is missing daytime HRV and evening HRV does not sync to Apple Health. However, I decided to keep the Garmin and in fact I upgraded to the Garmin 570. There are some insights and features of the Garmin which are quite nice. The built in workout coaching features are great and the detailed running metrics and charts while slightly dated looking are actually quite useful. My intention is to take inspiration from the Garmin and incorporate into MyBodyWatch where it makes sense. Other notes: Having physical buttons to control functionality over a touchscreen during a workout takes getting used to but I see the benefit. Spotify on the Garmin worked flawlessly once songs were downloaded contrary to my experience with the Apple Watches and downloaded music (both Apple Music and Spotify). Apple Pay is superior. Garmin Pay only worked with one of my cards. It did not work with Capital One or Amex. The ability to edit distance run on a treadmill after a workout with the Garmin is quite nice although Apple sometimes gets this close enough. Which will I keep? Good question! But it's great inspiration for MyBodyWatch. AMA

Personally, I’d just go with the 570. It’s newer than my Enduro 3 and can do pretty much the same things (except ECG and maps, I think?), and my Enduro 3 handles activity switching within the same session. Just this morning, I ran intervals, so started a HIIT Free activity. Then, when I got to the nearby park, I changed activity and started a Strength activity because I used the free outdoor gym (just chin-ups, pull-ups, and tricep dips). Just 2 sets of each. After that, I changed back to HIIT. This is easy with the 5 button setup. Not sure how quick or easy it is with just 2 buttons.

It records it as a single session, but you can look at the stats separately. Today, it created the following “activity legs” for me: - HIIT1 - Strength Training - HIIT 2 - Walk (cooling down period for me). It also creates something called “Multisport” that I can click on, and shows me a map of running I did in HIIT1 and HIIT2 onto a single map, (not 2 separate maps), plus stats for each activity leg.

Even the 570 basically has the same features as the Venu 4. Just no ECG. The 970 gives you sapphire face, and maps. The maps are useless for me, but the sapphire is something I’d want. Also, I think the 970 is a great looking watch as well. It’s only that it’s not formal or dressy at all.

## Why is the Forerunner better for running than the Instinct or Fenix? The Forerunner series is specifically designed for runners. It offers precise running metrics, a wealth of training features, and specialized performance analytics like Running Tolerance, Running Economy, and even biomechanical values such as pace decrease on ground contact (Forerunner 970). Forerunner models often have better screens (touch, higher resolution) and detailed training suggestions for runners. The Forerunner 265, for example, has a bright AMOLED display that is easy to read while running. Instinct models typically use older sensors and are more geared toward outdoor adventure than pure running performance. The Fenix is also excellent for running but is positioned more as a hybrid multisport watch with a focus on outdoor activities and rugged design [9][10][11][12]. ## In what way is the Forerunner less suitable for hiking/backpacking? Forerunner models are less rugged and lack some of the outdoor-specific sensors and navigation aids of the Fenix or Instinct lines. Battery life is generally shorter, which is a disadvantage for long trekking tours. Features like a barometric altimeter, special navigation functions, and inReach compatibility—which are crucial for hiking—are limited to higher-end Forerunners or are better represented in Fenix and Instinct models. For hikers, map quality on Forerunner watches is also limited or only available on premium models like the 970 [10][13][14]. ## How useful are animated workouts and training suggestions? Animated workouts (yoga, strength training, etc.) are easy to follow on Garmin and motivating, especially for learning technique and form. For runners, the suggested training programs on newer Forerunners are highly useful. They provide daily personalized plans that factor in your fitness level and recovery status. Users report that these features simplify planning and improve training consistency, as the watch dynamically adapts the training [15][16][17][18]. ## Are maps on the watch actually useful for running or hiking? For anything else? Full watch-based navigation and mapping features—found particularly on the Forerunner 970 and Fenix series—include offline maps, turn-by-turn navigation, and visual guidance. For everyday runs on familiar routes, they matter less, but for trail running or hiking where orientation is crucial, they’re invaluable. Maps offer extra value for safety, route planning, and are also popular among cyclists and those exploring new routes [19][12][20][14]. ## Does the Forerunner 970 passively monitor heart rhythm to trigger an ECG? Yes, the Forerunner 970 is the first in its series with an integrated ECG feature, which uses case sensors to record an ECG for issues like atrial fibrillation in about 30 seconds. While the function is always present, the ECG is only triggered manually and does not replace a doctor’s visit. Heart rate is constantly measured, but for a full ECG you must actively launch the function [13]. ## Smartwatch features: Can you read texts or see who’s calling? Does Garmin support RCS messages? Garmin supports push notifications for calls and text messages, and (on Forerunner 570/970) you can answer calls directly from the wrist using the speaker and microphone. However, full support for Rich Communication Services (RCS, e.g. Google Messages) is not yet widespread; Garmin generally handles SMS/MMS, and you can reply with pre-set responses. RCS compatibility is under development and not guaranteed [21][22]. ## Is the speaker/microphone on the 570/970 useful for anything besides answering? How playful is it? The Forerunner 970 has improved audio hardware to make phone calls and use voice assistants (Google Assistant, Siri, Bixby) directly from your watch. The speaker is for calls and notifications but not for music playback. No particularly playful functions are supported; it's aimed at practical uses like telephony and voice commands. The 570 offers more limited audio features but still allows basic call management [23][24][25]. ## What makes a Garmin better than competitors Coros, Suunto, Amazfit? Garmin is regarded as a market leader due to its extensive ecosystem, powerful sensors, wide variety of sport profiles, and detailed analytics. Garmin watches generally provide robust navigation features with maps, access to third-party apps (Connect IQ), precise GPS/heart sensors, and strong accessory support. If you don't care about new features and you are budget constrained, get the 955. If you are budget conscious but want the current gen OS look at the 570 (which is the forerunner version of the new venu 4) If you have the room to invest in the 970, i'd get the 970... "buy once cry once". The 955 is on maintenance mode - still getting fixes, but won't get new features. The 970 is flagship watch - tied with the HRM 600 it brings in flagship metrics. Do you need it? only you can decide. The 570 - comes in much more affordable and is the forerunner option of the new Venu 4. If budget is a constraint, i may recommend the 570 over the 955 simply because the 570 will see more new features, have the latest code and be future compatible. if you really need full fledged maps, it's best to plop down on 970 I'd weigh more on the 970 too if you are into endurance running - marathons/ultras or trail running or getting into activities where the maps could prove useful for pacepro and such

I have just retired my sense 2, it thinks I've gone up 3p flights of stairs while I'm in bed. It's broken af. Bought a Garmin forerunner 570 which whole being very expensive (for me at least) it's so much better in pretty much every aspect.

Forerunner 570 slate grey variant is on a huge sale at Walmart right now for $400. For the price, I'd say it's the best Garmin has to offer, but if price is no object, get the 970 for $750, much less than the Fenix line and has pretty much every useful feature you'd need.

The 970 is 40% more expensive in my country and doesn't have any extra features a normal runner needs. If you're upgrading from an older forerunner model the 570 is going to be better than what you have.

The *55 series is only a year older than the *65 series and has the same generation HR sensor, GNSS chipset, etc. The software is almost the same between the two, including a lot of the recent updates like a meditation activity, passcode, and auto lactate threshold detection. Arguably the FR *55 is more up to date than the Fenix 7 series which is a sore point for Fenix owners. So 955 vs 965 isn't really that big of a difference besides the much higher resolution, much brighter and more colorful screen. Some of the other reason people are recommending older devices is because the difference between high end and mid range is bigger right now than the difference between generations, so for example battery life is better on a 955 vs a 570, or the number of running metrics is higher on a 955 vs a 570. The screen is better on a 570 vs a 955 though so technology advances have brought some good updates to mid range.

Most people don’t have time to get a coach. The forerunner is target for the people who want to run road and trail races. This population is slightly older than the one who do track and field. Meaning they have a career and a family, so less time to dedicate to a coached session. If you do mainly track and field then you already have a coach, you are young and have the time to train for hours. As a device you just need a HRM. Your coach is doing the rest for you.

Just switched back from Apple Watch to Garmin, the forerunner 570, 42mm. I’d say it honestly depends on your needs. Going to try and give an objective stance here so it’s a bit long. Other than the obvious battery life, Apple Watch is a smart watch that can do some health and activity measuring. Garmin is a fitness watch that acts somewhat as a smart watch. What is your need? I was paying for an app on Apple to get me 3/4 of the information I get with the Garmin and needed that last 1/4 as my goal is more fitness oriented. The GPS tracking for hiking and the bike tracking were pretty lacking with the Apple Watch. I will say that Apple still wins on sleep, but Garmin gets there enough to tailor my workout day based on recovery. As far as the UI- it’s like anything, get it set up to your specs and it’s great. Hands down I get more data on how to maximize my fitness with Garmin than I ever did with Apple. The morning and evening reports are pretty fantastic and there is nothing that beats the readiness score and having your training day built based on it. Things I miss? Siri activation from the watch for home set up and lights, easy voice activation for other things, honestly that’s about it. The battery life was irritating with Apple so the small conveniences just don’t tip the scale enough even if you aren’t looking for a better activity watch. Yes, Garmins UI isn’t as polished feeling but it gives you more data and options for personalization and use becomes second nature. ETA- haven’t had any issues with it sending texts while working out. For the time while working out you can change the display screen to show the data fields that you want for each specific activity. I’d say Garmin takes time to set up the way you want but after that it’ll import all your settings as you upgrade watches. It still had my old 255 settings from back in the day I could bring forward. 570 is a big improvement and I noticed the overall handling on the newer watch is better so may be worth checking out if you’ve been away from Garmin for a while.

For most people the 'midrange ForeRunner' has always worked well, which had been the '200 series' for many years until the new released 570. Pricing is pretty wild, looking back: \- FR255 - bought in 2022 for $349. \- FR265 - bought in 2023 for $449 ... and now the FR570 is $549!

Weight/size of it is pretty good! Nothing too recognizable in terms of bulkiness. I have a 6.5" wrist and wearing the 47mm version so I hope that helps! It didn't feel much different compared to a Forerunner 165 that I had returned when I ran a 5K test route.

Oh god, I'll try and not make this too long lol. I just ultimately really don't like that it emits light. It just makes them feel a bit toy-like (to me). I'd dismiss this feeling as just me overthinking it, but Garmin somewhat validates it with their stock Amoled faces being very toy-like too.  This new Amoled experience has just made what once felt like a understated, reliable timepiece now look like (**to me**) something else. Like a Fitbit, or an Apple Watch. Capable brands too of course, but it wasn't the original appeal of Garmin to me.  I get that you can help alleviate this by having it activate only through a gesture, and turn down the display brightness. But brightness is still brightness, and it's not something I look for in a watch.

There's an app that after a few hours of games and surveys it gives you a 20% off MSRP code. It's been verified for many users over the years and still kicking. I for the life of me can't remember the app tho. Not sure if that'll help you with your purchase. I wish I could it before spending MSRP on my 570 lol

I have the 570 great little watch. I don't go anywhere without my phone and if I'm running I'm not staring at my watch as my arm swings for topo maps to be of any help. There are a few map 'apps' you can install from Garmin that will allow you to download a smaller map of your area you're going to run / hike at if you simply need the visuals.

FR570 fits your wrist better. Unless you wear long-sleeve shirts of a more formal type, wearing the larger FR970 shouldn't matter. A regular routine of Zottman curls will thicken up your wrists and forearms if you want to grow into the larger size.

Apple Watch definitely has its strengths — super accurate heart rate, seamless iPhone pairing, and all those nice health insights like sleep tracking. But honestly, I was struggling with its GPS accuracy, especially when running around tall buildings or under trees. The pace readings would sometimes be off, and that really bothered me. So, I decided to give Garmin a try. At first, I was eyeing the Forerunner 265, it was heavily discounted — but sadly, no stock. The choices left were 965 and 570, both almost the same price. I know, 965 seems like the obvious pick — it has maps. But in the end, I went with the 570. The display is incredibly bright, and when you see it side by side with other models, the difference is huge. Plus, I can answer calls directly from the watchsuper helpful because I do get calls mid-run. I’ll admit, I haven’t fully moved on from not choosing the 965 (those maps are tempting), but I’m loving the 570 so far. Since 99% of my runs don’t need maps anyway — maybe that 1% will, when I start trail running — I’d say this is a win for now. Building the base first, maps can wait.

No, they are well overpriced for what you are getting. Outdated, laggy, buggy software, with watches that for the most part are made of plastic/resin and look cheap. The Connect app is a disaster. You will need a chest strap if you are interested in accurate heart rate data for activities. The bluetooth antennae range is short and has issue connecting for many - android and iPhone users alike. Yes they give you a great deal of data, is it fun to look at, absolutely, is it needed, absolutely not. There is so much of it that folks either don't understand or don't know what to do with it so they never action it. Further if the heart rate data is not accurate or consistent is any of the data valuable anyway? Garmin is falling behind its competitors, changing its focus in an attempt to add more smartwatch feature - doing so poorly it seems - and not staying true to being a great fitness tracker. They are relying more and more on their reputation and their prices are going up and up for watches that are going down in quality and usability due to software issues/bugs. Just have a look at all the issues that occurred when the Fenix 8 was released, the FR970/570 and VenuX1 are currently having software issues too.

I second this. Exact same use case run 3x/week and weight train 3-4x/week. I found the epix pro gen 2 sapphire to be best utility and bang for buck. I tried the FR but was too run focused and I preferred the more tactical look. The fenix 8 was nice but at double the price with same sensor technology it didn’t felt worth it. You do forgo the mic and voice features but I didn’t need it and didn’t want a true smart watch but prioritized a fitness forward watch. 3 months in and I love my Epix pro gen 2 47mm
