Older here, galaxy watch 4 44mm, max 2 days battery life with most of its features off. Needs factory reset after each update or becomes so slow it can't show time.
You just said all the reasons not to get it lol meanwhile i have that one and the new ultra and i can tell you the ultra is a whole different world.
I went from the 44mm Watch 4 to the Ultra. It is big and sometimes gets in the way, especially with certain long sleeve cuffs. I have gotten used to it, but it was a big change at the time. I wanted the Ultra primarily for the battery life. It was also nice to have LTE built in as I wouldn't have paid extra for it if I got the non-Ultra. Mine doesn't get as good of battery life as some claim, I still charge mine every morning, but I have continuous HRM and track my sleep. I don't use AOD, but do use raise to wake.
The real checkbox is 24/7 sleep detection. If the watch is built around a “bedtime window,” it’ll miss day sleep no matter what. GW4 often behaves like that depending on your sleep schedule or bedtime mode settings, so I’d tweak those first and make sure HR tracking is always on. If you’re staying on Android, Fitbit-style sleep tracking tends to be the least annoying for shift work. And if you’re open to other brands, KOSPET has sleep tracking on plenty of models
I went from Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 44m to PW3 45 mm and I love it. Of course some features are lacking and locked behind the Fitbit premium but they don't make me regret it. Generally better, smother and prettier UI experience on the Pixel. I just never liked the One UI. And my phone seems to have less battery drain after the switch but that can be unrelated. I miss the body composition sensors but I always knew they weren't accurate anyway so no big deal. EKG and Pulse loss detection is locked behind a 22 year old mark so be aware of that. Fitbit doesn't have dark mode in their app but we talk about it for like 5 years now. The battery is amazing, and charging is better for me as the charger is a bit slimmer and has USB-C. I keep AOD on, something I wasn't able to do on GW4 as it drained the battery like a monster. Better integration with phone calls, Bluetooth switching for headphones and Google app updates their apps regularly in contrast to Samsung. That's it. It's worth it. If you have any questions I'm willing to answer
You can obviously use swimming activity outdoors but it's more designed to be used indoors where you can set the length of the pool you're in. Galaxy watches eg. Have "Outdoor swimming" exercise which tracks your GPS and calculates rates based on that
Check out the Amazfit GTR 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 if you can find it on sale - both hit most of your requirements and actually look like proper watches instead of those chunky fitness tracker things. The GTR 4 especially has insane battery life and the health tracking is pretty solid for the price range
