My HONEST review of the 5 MG. So to start with, I'm not an athlete, I go to the gym every now and again, and try to stay fairly active. What I am... is a tech guy, a stats guy, someone who loves data. Last year, I discovered the Whoop 4 after seeing ads for it on social. I spent most of the year wearing one until I had some health problems in December. I had to have some tests, and one critical piece of information that would have been useful was a baseline ECG reading. I couldn't provide it, and it actually hindered my recovery. That was the day I stopped wearing a Whoop, and bought an Apple Watch. Fast forward to today. My MG arrived a few days ago and I'm now back to all the data I used to love with the addition of an ECG and BP. I'll start with the BP reading. We have a blood pressure machine at home so it was straight forward for me to calibrate the MG. Initial results suggest it's pretty accurate, but time will tell. I'll do comparisons over the next few months. Not onto the ECG. Look.. it's ok, it's not as good as Apple's. It's harder to use, seems to be fairly accurate but can give some odd results if not held very specifically. It does the job for me. Let's talk about the quality of the band and device. The device feels premium, the band and clasp feel cheap AF. Because, let's be real with ourselves, they ARE cheap. The material is cheap. The finish isn't particularly amazing. When third parties produce an MG band I'll be first to try them. The packaging felt cheap, it didn't feel expensive at all. I often keep my tech boxes, I won't be keeping this. As for everything else, the app, the functionality, well yeah it's what I loved before. Now... price. I pay monthly. I pay £39. Is it worth that? No, that's pretty ridiculous in my eyes. Am I willing to pay it? Yeah.. because no other device gives me the distraction free data I crave. Do I agree with all the moaning here and concerns? Yeah, you're all valid, Whoop took the piss and have moved the goalposts. But I'm a sucker for tech, and most of you are too, so even though I disagree with their practices we're all going to fall in line and consume. Let's be honest. Short version: It's a good device, new features are decent, it's overpriced but unique to the market.

I can’t stand my Apple Watch. It always turns off during my workouts and counting “exercise minutes” is literally pointless. I bought an Ultra 2 because I wanted to have the best shot at success with it and that thing is a POS for health tracking. The whoop is so much more comfortable and consistent at tracking with better data analytics. I have the 5.0 and the band is fine. Idk what everyone is complaining about. Is it something you would wear to dress up an expensive outfit? No, but that’s not really what it is intended for. Personally, I would wear it with a suit without thinking twice because I don’t really care what other people think.

One of the main reasons I choose a whoop over an Apple watch was due to the free hardware upgrades. Conveniently my 12 month subscription is up around the same time the Apple watch is released. The cost isn’t the issue, it’s them changing what’s promised.

Tried whoop, Fitbit, and now am on Apple Watch. I loved whoop but I couldn’t justify the monthly subscription. So if money isn’t an issue, I recommend whoop. Fitbit sucked. At least for me it did. Loving my Apple Watch the most. It’s easier to see how my heart rate is going and it keeps me motivated during the day outside of working out. Plus it has the find my phone feature which helps my flakey ass.

Whoop might work well for you. It can be worn in multiple places on your body (wrist or bicep straps are most common, they also make clothing / underwear designed to hold the device). Main advantage for me vs. Apple / Garmin is I can wear it on my right arm while wearing a normal watch on my left wrist.

I was pretty pissed off but it looks like the new device IS free, the wording is just super bad - I need to confirm with customer service, but it looks like if I can upgrade to the 5.0 for free and my subscription will renew again in January at the same price, *or* I can upgrade to the Mg and then renew at the higher price. If they want me to pay all that shit up front, then it's a hard pass. And all that said, it's still nickel-and-diming bullshit. I'm struggling to articulate this via text, but like, I am confident that making two devices and multiple apps have associated costs. They could have kept their costs down by making one device and then recouped it by making the app slightly more expensive, right? I think most of us would have been fine with the Mg being the only device and "hey, we've made the app and the device track all these extra things and it's going to cost an extra $5/mo or $25/yr or whatever from here on out as a result" versus the absolute mess of a rollout we got.

I think converting the remaining months to fewer months for MG is wrong (we already paid for that time, 18 months in your case, and it does seem like breach of contract since they said upgrades are free). That being said, if they want to increase the membership cost for future not yet paid for months that we may opt to buy, they're well within their right to do that and the hardware is still free. But the converting our existing months to less time feels icky and I'm not sure what the point is because this is just annoying and it's a temporary source of cash for them at best.

I don't think it's Will who's driving this, it's SoftBank lol. If it'd been up to Will, everyone would have gotten the MG. That was OG Whoop vibes, the best data for all. Tiered approaches are a classic private equity play because they allow for capture of more of the market.

12€ shipping is such a scam. In no way in the world does a small package like the whoop cost 12€ to ship. Btw if you upgrade you wont have 14months anymore. 25% get deducted for the higher subscription cost. you left with 10month

It’s really unfortunate that WHOOP has decided to take this route — not updating devices for existing subscribers with active plans. For example, I cancelled my subscription yesterday and don’t plan to renew it. It’s disappointing to see this approach from WHOOP. And I especially feel bad for people who just subscribed. Like my boss, for instance — I recommended WHOOP to him, he purchased a yearly subscription, and received his new device only three weeks ago. Now, every time he opens the WHOOP app, he’ll get a reminder that a new device is available — but to get it, he’ll have to pay an extra fee. Sadly, this will be the case for all new users who joined at the last minute. They’ll constantly be getting follow-up prompts: “You’re not using WHOOP to its full potential,” or “Discover more – upgrade, subscribe, pay extra.” As for me, I’ll stick with Apple Watch, a one-time purchase, paired with an app like Athletic, which costs significantly less. I’m confident this combination will cover 90% of my needs. And if one day I feel that I’m missing something, I’ll just buy an Oura ring — and even then, it’ll still cost less than WHOOP.

I got my MG yesterday and don't have any issues with the band and clasp. It locks into place just fine and rotates smoothly when removing the whoop. I guess they had some QA issues for the initial batch. I went for a treadmill run yesterday and used my Polar H10 to compare HR tracking to the MG. It was pretty much in line with the H10 and while I did get some cadence lock at one point it corrected itself in like 10 seconds, which is better than what I was experiencing with the 4.0. It was only one run though so doesn't prove much...

I purchased the whoop and after several days I returned it. While wearing it was convenient, I am a side sleeper so having something on my arm just hurt as a slept. I am a women and I was looking for a little more data about my body. The whoop is probably best just for athletes not casual wearers. I am thinking about switching to oura ring cause it just looks better. If I am in a formal setting wearing a dress the original band is not appealing and I feel like you need much of a commitment to the whoop before buying all the accessories. I also don't like how it cant track when you start ya activities or how many miles you walked. It just give you too many data points without really any significance.

Having had my MG for a couple of days and run, cycled and lifted weights with it, I can say confidently that it's ability to measure HR on the wrist during activity is just as bad as the 4.0 was. The 4.0 was excellent with a bicep band and I am desperately awaiting my bicep band for the MG. I do think forcing everyone to buy new bands was cynical by Whoop. It would have been incredibly simple to making it compatible with existing bands. Apple have with their watch for 10 iterations.

This is my perspective as someone who uses Whoop and wears an SMP or a Speedy that I rotate according to how I feel. Also, I've tried Oura, and liked it, but it wasn't for me. And I have an AW Ultra that I use when running and hiking, and this is after a few years of using a Garmin Fenix. Most people think of Whoop as simply a fitness tracker, which it is, but it is much more. What seperates Whoop from other things is how it shows you the impact of your behaviors. Yes, I think Whoop was less than honest about their upgrade policy with the new 5.0 and MG release, but I still can't find anything like it. The "magic" of Whoop is that it allows you to pre-select certain behaviors that will appear in a daily journal. Each morning you take 30 seconds to check yes or no on these items, e.g. Did you consume added sugar yesterday? Did you eat a late meal? There are endless options. As times goes on, Whoop continues to show you how these behaviors are impacting your sleep so that you discover how far before bed you should stop eating, or what's the latest time of the day you can drink caffeine without it impacting your sleep (even though you may think it doesn't because you fall asleep quickly). I'm not trying to sound like an advertisement for Whoop, but I think most people evaluate Whoop without knowing what it really does. So when I run or hike I use my Ultra for reasons that don't overlap with Whoop. But the rest of the day, when wearing my SMP or Speedy, or when I sleep, I wear Whoop because it is providing overall health insights that I find valuable and have led to lifestyle changes that I may not have made otherwise--even as a person in great shape who works out six days a week.

Honestly, main reason I consider paying 100€ to get the MG right now, is that it will shorten my remaining subscription from 15 to 10 months. After that, I will most likely terminate. Was really, really looking forward to today and I am completely disappointed

Same here. No upgrades on sensors, but ridiculous upgrading cost makes this launch a huge disappointment for me. And I was really, really looking forward to it. Would even have accepted the annual price of the MG, if it would have received an entirely new set of sensors. With Garmin and others, every generation gets new, improved sensors while Whoop uses the same ones as in a four year old device

Same here... I was absolutely pissed about the 89€ fee (when everything is far cheaper anyways in USD). Still decided to do it - and lose a third of my remaining subscription - only to see on check-out that they charge 12€ on top of all this to ship this tiny box? Ridiculous... I aborted the order. Need to think about what to do with my 15 remaining months. In any case, Whoop lost all the (substantial) sympathy I had for the brand

Currently running a dual band with AW and whoop. Dropping both for a Garmin Epix 2 Pro is my plan. Currently doing 75 Hard, running in the AM and lifting at night. All other times primarily strength train and mix in some cardio. For me - AW - only use because I bought one for my dad and it lead him into working out for first time in his life, is now on day 475 of 5k with a goal of 500 in a row. No real desire on my end to use it as a smart watch so most of the pro’s here just aren’t what I’m looking for. Got a whoop due to the strength trainer. After a year, getting very sick of it. Customer service is awful. Consistent issues with it tracking properly. Tired of inputting every rep and see twice as I already use and prefer the Strong app for several years for that purpose. Btwn that and the $20 per month cost that never stops I’m ready to go to 1 device that handles it all. On top of that, the $20 per month is allegedly due to the consistent innovation. In the year I’ve had it virtually nothing has changed, minus the ability to undo a lifting set, which is nice. Biggest concerns for me is how the sharing works btwn family / group whatever they call it on garmin, and how best to track weighted runs on there while awarding badges and not skewing V02 max and running times as from what I can tell garmin has no ruck / weighted run specific workouts. Any inputs into if I’m going the right direction with the garmin?

let's face it. the piece of HW itself, if sold as HW would be at around 150eur pricepoint (see Polar verity sense as a reference - 100eur, it has accelerometer and a serious HR sensor). If I upgrade to 5.0, the worst case scenario is that whoop makes around 120eur (60 eur one time fee + 60eur for the bicep band which is a must to have as the wrist is shit to take pulse during activity - they will claim the sensor is better and stuff, but it's just marketing... see Polar/Garmin/Suunto again, they've been improving their sensors for years, but wrist is intrinsically bad for taking pulse) on top of the subscription. I mean, it's overpriced, period. The MG really doesn't make sense. I have the electrocardiogram on my polar v3, is useless. You run it and then? You can print it and send it to your doctor... for what? The blood pressure even more useless... it's an estimate. How accurate can be estimating blood pressure from the wrist HR sensor when it's not accurate in tracking HR itself? I'm not price sensitive too, but I don't like wasting money too. The only real upgrade here is battery life.

Is anyone else pissed about the fact that none of the bands are compatible with the new 5.0 or MG? I agree, Garmin Epix 2 and Whoop owner here. Garmin is pretty shitty at sleep… I’ll be awake for an hour in the middle of the night and it will tell me I had continuous sleep all night. Whoop captures all those wake-ups, even the little ones to roll over. Whoop is convenient because it auto detects activities. It just thinks my heart rate is way higher than it is. No, Whoop, I’m not in Zone 4 playing pickleball. Garmin with its 6 lasers (to Whoop’s 2) is more spot-on (like within 5-10% of wearing my Polar chest strap), but you have to remember to start your activity manually if you want to look at graphs and stats. Garmin is a good watch, with flashlights and altitimeters and compasses and other useful things. There are a lot of customizable watch faces, so you can make it as useful as you like. Whoop is just simple and easy. So far I can’t get myself to get rid of one!

I woud go for Life sub if it weren’t a full year upfront, I am particularly interested in ECG and arrhythmia detection, but no way I’m throwing 400€ upfront for a device I don’t own. I would even pay 35-40€ a month for it, but having to unload 400€ upfront just feels bad. I will stick to WHOOP 4 and my Withings Core.

What do you do in the gym? What are your goals? Generally speaking, no, whoop is not the best for the gym. \- Sleep, and HR/HRV \*during sleep\*: there are studies to support whoop sleep assessments (identifying pretty well that the user is asleep and not that well in which sleep stage) ( [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32713257/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32713257/) ) and HR/HRV measurements *during sleep* ( [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36016077/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36016077/) ). I think whoop sleep and recovery data and metrics can be quite useful, together with the journal insights, to help improve habits that affect sleep and recovery. But in the end what I've learned from whoop about my habits is that "the basics work" - which doesn't require a whoop (I can elaborate on this if you'd like). \- Whoop sleep-recovery-strain “loop”: I do think the *idea* of the whoop strain target and sleep planner is brilliant: based on your recovery, the strain target would advise how much you should train that day, and based on the strain from the day, the sleep planner would advise how much you should sleep that night. But none of that has been validated; the whoop strain metric was never validated, and the same is true for the strain target and the sleep planner “sleep need” calculations. Ie- it seems like a good *idea* (hypothesis) in theory, but it hasn’t been *proven* (demonstrated) in practice. Currently, I see no compelling reason to believe that following whoop strain recommendations would be *better* than simply following a science-based training program (or simply following the physical activity guidelines for health - if that's the goal). Similarly, currently, I see no compelling reason to believe that following whoop sleep recommendations would be *better* than simply sleeping \~7-8 h per night (or enough to wake-up feeling well rested) with regular sleep/wake-up times (\~1 h window). \- HRV-based training (and therefore whoop recovery and day strain recommendation): even if we wanted to buy into the idea of the whoop sleep-recovery-strain “loop”, that wouldn’t really work if the main goal was to maximize strength (and/or muscle growth). The strain target is based on whoop recovery, which is heavily based on HRV, and HRV isn’t a reliable metric of readiness for strength training, to adjust your strength training sessions on a daily basis, based on the current overall body of research (eg- [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6835520/](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6835520/) and [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32079921/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32079921/) ) (and hard strength training can cause a decrease in HRV – that’s not necessarily an issue if the goal is strength and/or muscle growth). \[For my strength training, I'd basically ignore HRV (and whoop recovery / day strain recommendation); I'd follow a science-based strength training program and use auto-regulation to adjust my strength training sessions on a daily basis. I think this point is always worth mentioning because whoop themselves don’t make it clear, they usually just say “training” when discussing HRV-based training (and whoop recovery / day strain recommendation), and I think that can be misleading for users with strength / hypertrophy goals.\] \- Strength trainer / muscular load: like I wrote, the whoop strain metric was never validated, and the same is true for the strength trainer / muscular load; they say it was “developed at whoop labs”, which to me sounds like “trust me bro” :) I started using the strength trainer when it was released, hoping improvements would come soon; but the muscular load, the cardio/muscular split, and the intensity didn’t match my perception at all; and it doesn’t show history/trends per exercise or velocity; I stopped using it completely, waiting for them to release improvements (which never came - then I cancelled my membership). Currently, I don't see how the whoop strength trainer would be *useful* for strength / hypertrophy. \- Calories: whoop estimate of calories burned is admittedly inaccurate. From my experience, it isn’t even reliable (“consistently inaccurate”), so even the trend isn’t useful. To the best of my knowledge, there’s no science-based way to accurately estimate calories burned using a wearable; that’s why generally wearables do a poor job at that. Are you interested in calories burned to manage your nutrition / bodyweight?

Agree the MG band feels cheap (I thought it feels more premium coming from the standard 4.0 band). Only having it for two days but the BP is very accurate for the two days where I compared it to my clinical BP device. What I still need tif I gute out is how accurate the new sensors are. When doing a workout I get around 50% more calories burned according to my Apple Watch compared to the Whoop MG. Like 200kcal on Whoop but 300kcal with the Apple Watch. So one of the devices is noticeable off. I think it’s the whoop given the sensor quality on the 4.0 but the numbers in the Whoop make more sense given the intensity of my workout session.

I have a Whoop (obviously), Oura Ring 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 (+ Bevel App) in daily use. If I would need to remove one device it would be the Whoop. If I would need to remove two devices it would be Whoop + Oura Ring. In my use the Whoop is the most unreliable in terms of data collection. It regularly detects workouts when I do nothing. Recently had a „workout“ of Yoga that moved my strain on that day from 4.1 to 17.3 in just 20min. Problem was I was sitting on my chair doing office work. This stuff happens every few weeks and definitely lowered my trust in the accuracy of the device. Apart from that it is more comfortable to wear than the Apple Watch but less comfortable than the Oura Ring (especially for sleep tracking). What I like is the customization options with different bands (I have a black and a blue one) which you can use to make it fit your outfit better. I thought about getting a biceps strap but I‘m not paying the ridiculous prices Whoops charges for this. Oura is obviously always looking the same and I don’t like that it scratches relatively easily especially if you wear it while lifting. Build quality on the other side is perfectly fine for me. The Apple Watch feels most premium out of the three devices, has the most functions and I trust it‘s data the most in terms of accuracy. In combination with the Bevel App it gives me a lot of insight. Honestly without Bevel I would not get the Apple Watch if your only purpose is health tracking. Apples pre-installed health apps on the watch/phone have all the data but they way it‘s displayed and summarized is awful. I don’t mind paying my 6$ per month for Bevel and I got the Watch not only for health reasons but also to use its other features but keep in mind that Bevel is something you probably need to replace Whoop/Oura with the Apple Watch. If my Oura Ring 3 fails in the future I will probably get a Gen 4 ring. If Apple introduces a Ultra 3/4/5 etc with new useful sensors I can imagine upgrading. If my current watch breaks I would buy it again without a doubt. For Whoop I’m currently on the road to not extend my subscription once it expires. I‘m a bit over half way through my 2 year subscription and since I anyway paid for it I will continue wearing the Whoop daily but as of now I don’t really see a reason to renew it. Hopefully when this time arrives the introduced Whoop 5 or made significant improvements to the software and features. For those interested: Battery life I get with Whoop + Oura is basically the same of around 5 days. The Apple Watch lasts around 4 days (I have Always on off which boost the battery life significantly).

I used a Whoop for a while but went back to an Apple Watch. Whoop has a lot of metrics and I liked that it could go days without a charge, but I like all the other stuff the watch does - like show me the time. 😉 I also didn’t want to wear both. I know that’s an option some choose to go with. Edit to add: I don’t really *need* it for CF. I mostly like to keep an eye on my heart rate, primarily because I find it interesting to watch my perceived exertion vs. where my heart rate is at. I also get a kick out of seeing what the watch says vs. the C2 rower for calories - they usually are very close!

It’s a retention method to get you to test the new features, then convince you that you should “rent” it, yes, it doesn’t belong to you. It's not a problem as long as you're pragmatic. You are made to believe that there is elitism within society. On the other hand, what we cannot take away from them is the pleasant software part, the indications and a well-thought-out UI. On the other hand, those who take the argument, “I don’t want a screen”. Please note, this is just my opinion. But from the first year you have a good watch. At two years of subscription, you gain access to a premium watch such as Garmin with the same metrics, which is yours. Mapping if necessary, etc… For my part, I have a Garmin Tactix 7 AMOLED, if the screen bothers me. I activate screen off mode. I have the WHOOP 4, the MG is coming soon. I only take it to compare metrics.

On the other hand, in the new offers, avoid the One version. You end up with the clamped bracelet. What you won't get with the "One": -Healthspan - Stress monitor - Health monitor. It costs 199 euros per year, for 64 euros more it’s the “Peak” version. The bracelet renamed to “One” loses all its meaning. The Life version is more niche, but the best. The price is crazy, but I take it for its more advanced metrics or rather which is catching up compared to the competition.

Whoop at bicep has worked well for me, you can turn it around to where it won’t get hit. I used a Garmin for a while by flipping it to the inside of wrist but I got a callous on my wrist with the skin being rubbed raw by the kb on the silicon band. Criticism of these is they aren’t as accurate as heart rate straps which is undoubtedly true but I’ve found whoop on bicep has been good enough. Wrist Garmin for me was totally inaccurate, would read 130bps for hard hiit sessions whereas whoop is registering 180+ (and is how I feel)

My best recommendation for tracking muscle strain and recovery (as compared to just cardiac strain & recovery) is Whoop. I used Polar for over 5 years and though I like the brand, their watches have fallen way behind the competition and I left them for Whoop last year. Polar only offers cardiac strain while Whoop offers both muscle and cardiac strain tracking. If you need a device with a screen and GPS, Garmin is the best choice for strength training as they offer muscle mapping and guided workouts.

Whoop tracks a metric called "Strain," which is calculated by your activities and daily living each day. They calculate muscle strain via algorithms, accelerometer and gyroscope. As for determining a value for leg work, I'm unsure of how it is done but I can confirm that the Strain results I see after having done a day of legs/lower body or posterior chain movements, are in line with my upper body days. I feel Whoop is accurate at determining muscle strain and effort and it's been one of my most favorite devices for tracking my workouts, ever. https://www.whoop.com/us/en/thelocker/introducing-strength-trainer-a-new-way-to-quantify-the-impact-of-your-strength-training/

I have 10 months left on a 2Y subscription + $150 invested in 4.0 bands + $40 for a spare charger. I considered 5.0 for the $49 upgrade fee (thought it was going to be free when I signed up) and another $49 for a non-black band. Then realized that's effectively $10/mo more out of pocket for the 14 day battery life... And another year for $240 ($20/mo feels quite steep for these metrics now). I'll stick with the 4.0 (\~3 day battery currently) until my subscription runs out and go over to Apple Watch Ultra. Regrettable.

don't think it is as simple as alternatives. All the devices mentioned are just different . I have Samsung Galaxy Watch ultra ,oura ring and whoop . if I wasn't exercising/pushing as much as I am I would not be using Whoop . Whoop is by far the best for that .Oura ring is by far the best lifestyle tracker with best insights. And it is not close . If I could only choose one device still would choose only my watch . Having the screen +apps +ability to go for a run with just your watch and listen to books /podcasts directly, payments with just your watch ,easiness of activity tracking and heart rate tracking . Could go on and on . Second device I would choose would be oura ring for the quality of data and insight that is far superior to Whoop . Whoop shines when it goes to form .the strap is superior form if you are an active person . Not having it off makes it less burdensome too . I think Strain is superior form of tracking and gives me much better insights when it goes to overtraining and when to push or recover . If you can only buy one device buy a good smartwatch for the versatility .

I had a Whoop for 1y (gone), a AW9 for 1y, and I'm going to get an Oura 4. I'm getting rid of my AW9, but just because I'm getting a AW10 with LTE. Here is my plan: AW10 - Wear it during activites only. I do weightlifting, sauna, and indoors/road cycling. I'm getting the LTE version so that I don't have to carry my phone around in the gym, sauna or in the road. Apart from being able to make and take calls, I'll also be able to pair it with some open earphones and listen to podcasts/audiobooks while exercising. The AW has awesome HR tracking precision, and I can use all the available fitness apps to track workouts. Oura seems to pull all the info from apple health just fine, so I'm not missing anything from not wearing it during activities. Oura - Wear it 24/7, except during activites. I want to get back to mechanical watches, so wearing the AW10 instead is not an option (plus, I get a bad reaction on my skin after a few days with it).

I'll be on the fence to upgrade until I see reports of the accuracy of EKG and blood pressure. Hoping they have tested this better and in larger volume than other features.

Biggest strength of whoop is wearable charging. And discrete non display strap. Wear a bicep band for better accuracy. No one sees it. You can still wear a normal watch. And you never have to take it off to charge and forget to put back on. Subscription model sucks dick.

Quick summary: We all backed them on Kickstarter, $500 for nothing but a promise to maybe get something. One time fee, lifetime of use. In the meantime they switched from a hardware company to a subscription company but left us alone. All was good until 4.0, then they pulled the “just kidding” and started charging us. Less than others (but only after MUCH complaining). The overall consensus from non founding members was “quit your crying, it’s still a good deal”. I must say I’m really enjoying the 5.0 roll-out reaction.

I actually got electric shock from my whoop 4.0 from their laser sensors a couple days ago and it left a burn mark on my wrist…. I have documented photos with timestamps.  Now this? This was why I picked whoop instead of the oura ring. Whoop promised free hardware upgrades while Oura stated you have to buy the hardware. This is blatant lying… I paid for 3 memberships this year for me and two family members. Whoop, this is not how you do business… if you needed the extra money because maybe coding labor and hardware development was more expensive than you guys expected, just be transparent about it. At the end of the day, me and other customers are paying not only for the device and usage but also we want to help pave the way to actually improving this product to be helpful in advancing the technology. If this is to just be more greedy, then you guys are about to lose a lot of current customers

I don’t understand. I was able to exchange my Whoop 4.0 for free and get the 5.0 for free (EU citizen). If I compare this to an Apple product (as everyone does, but I still don’t understand why everyone complains): If I take an Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple tells me that I’ll get the new product for free when a new one comes out, it seems logical to expect to have access to the Apple Watch 10 at no cost. But would that logic still apply if Apple releases the Series 10 and the Ultra at the same time (like Whoop did with the 5.0 and MG)? Based on my contract and subscription, the Apple Watch Ultra wouldn’t be considered part of the new version since it’s a completely new product. Plus, Whoop also specifies that anyone subscribing through their site will get this upgrade for free. (That’s my current case.) Can someone explain to me why nobody is happy?

What I think is misleading is that they ARE providing the upgrade to 5.0 when you renew. BUT... when you actually have to renew is the issue. We are all on different renewal cycles, some have 1 month left, some just started and have 11 months or more left. The person with 1 month left with renew and get a 5.0. But it is not fair to think that 11 month or more person has to wait that long to get their upgrade... so there should be a 3 month cap (max I'd say) until you are sent one automatically. As for the MG tier, I honestly think it should be included in the 5.0 but with a reasonable price increase. Put out only the MG device at $300/year. Also, bring back the damn hydroknit bands! Those are bomb and the big reason I would miss the 4.0.

your best option for strength training is the whoop band as its the only one that is currently producing anything close to a reasonable estimate of muscular strain. Polar offers a really basic measurement - but its very debateable if it actually offers anything. The rest are all cardio strain. So if you are doing is gym, and you are prepared to pay the cost then I would suggest a whoop strap.

I’d say MG is not important. If you’re healthy and have no reason to suspect you need ecg and the like, and a dedicated amateur or semi pro athlete that wants to track and improve performance, I’d skip and just go with the 5. The new stuff seems like more gamification. Which is fine, I get it they need to pull in the numbers, and most standard consumers want bells and whistles. Honestly, you could even just go with the 4.

The whoop is a terrible fitness tracker at best it is a health and wellness device. It is an extremely well marketed cheap inaccurate heart sensor with a well designed app. The only positive things about the Whoop and these are limited to those who appreciate them are the lack of a screen and the ability to charge it while wearing it. Whoop is extremely limiting in that it will only allow you to use it’s own heart rate sensor while other wearables will allow you to connect heart straps, foot pods etc. It shackles you to your phone for activities unless you want it to guess (which it is not very good at) or to go back later and add them which is very inconvenient.

You can use a heart rate strap with any Garmin and get far better heart rate data than you can with whoop. But any newer Garmin is going to work better. Whoop is not accurate when used on the wrist, marginally better on the bicep. It is a cheap subpar heart rate sensor with a pretty app that gives you common sense or completely nonsensical insights. The strain score is a made up metric and based solely on heart rate. You can increase just by shaking your wrist for a few minutes.

r/whoop • From a gym standpoint, is whoop the best? ->

I really wanted it to be great and it isn’t a personal bias it is well know that it is an inaccurate device, if you complain to whoop about inaccuracy on the wrist they will send you a free bicep band because they are well aware of its inaccuarcies. This isn’t something that is new, it is well known. It is a poor fitness tracker and you need a additional dedicated tracker to see any meaningful long term progression for any training. It is a decent sleep tracker that’s about it. I have the 4 and it is very easy to manipulate the strain score. I could easily put the same argument onto you and say you have a bias in favour of Whoop. Just because it seems to work for you does not mean that it is a good device. Just to add to the point that it is not a good fitness tracker you also need your phone and a connection to see any data which useless when out in the backcountry.

They are only insights taken through the night while sleeping, at your most relaxed state, they are not going to be very useful. The Whoop can't take true BP measure measurement, it will be using some algorithm with your heart rate to give you a number.

Ive tried a few and here’s my feedback. Apple watch: it’s a smart watch not a fitness watch. It has improved recently (the latest models should be significantly more accurate than the one I had 4+ years ago) however for me personally it’s the distraction element that I do not like. I do not need another screen. Fitbit; data is ok for a beginner, but definitely not great or accurate for someone training 5-6x a week and combining cardio, sports, weights etc. Whoops: no screen which is a major + for me. Can wear it on wrist, bicep or underwear. Really good measurement of sleep and calculation of sleep/down time based on your daily activity. That helps a lot plan your sleep and have better recovery and as a consequence, perform great in the following day. I am quite curious to try Oura and Garmin (even though I’d hate to go back to screen wearables) maybe i’ll get one of them next year but so far, Whoop is 100% the best Fitness tracker out there imo. In addition, I’ve realized that in all High End resorts that I’ve been in the past 3 years, people wear 2 things: a rolex or a whoop 😂 so as a Henry I guess that’s a good indicator.

Good news is you can program your watch by either (or both) focus's and notifications. The watch isn't the same as whoop. But it gives you all of the same features depending on which subscriptions you have. They are all significantly less than whoop though. I frequently golf and was drawn to whoop years ago and I loved it. I learned a ton on what is good and what is bad for me. I cancelled shortly after the 4.0 drop because I already learned everything there is to know. But I still wanted the data. I just couldn't fathom spending an annual subscription that was as much as the Apple Watch itself when I didn't see Whoop trending in the right direction. Whoop 3.0 was it's peak. Once they started selling eye masks and new bands at a rate of 300% more than it was in the blink of an eye, I was out. I use; Bevel = $50/year Heart Analyzer = $9/one time fee HeartWatch = $6/one time fee AutoSleep = $6/one time fee Heart Analyzer and HeartWatch both offer V02 Max, Bevel will probably offer this in the future. All of the above offer HRV. AutoSleep measures HRV during sleep and upon waking (Breathe app is recommended which is free) The others track HRV through SDNN and RMSSD. Whoop tracks it more often, however you still get multiple readings per day with the other apps and can manually trigger it using the Breathe app. Bevel is the highest cost but also provides you: * Recovery score * Stress score * Energy bank * Sleep score * Sleep recommendations * Strain score * Strength builder * Journal * Lifestyle impact analysis * Training zones * complication/widgets for the watch Autosleep: * Automatic sleep detection * Plethora of sleep metrics and analysis * Sleep bank * Smart alarm

I renewed on the 19th of April, fully expecting to get the new device. You can imagine my shock when, after finding out that not only is Whoop 5.0 barely an upgrade on 4.0, but that I have to pay to get it as well. Here is the email I sent them, feel free to copy if you live in the UK: I am writing to formally raise a complaint regarding misleading advertising in connection with your product and membership model. At the time of my subscription, your website clearly stated that future device upgrades would be included for free as part of the membership. This statement was prominently displayed and was the primary reason I chose to enter into a long-term membership, paying several hundred pounds. Now that Whoop 5.0 has been released, I was surprised and disappointed to learn that an additional fee is being demanded for the upgrade. This contradicts the advertised promise and constitutes a **misleading commercial practice** under the **Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008**. Specifically, Regulation 5 prohibits misleading actions that cause consumers to make transactional decisions they would not otherwise have made. Under UK consumer law, misleading advertising can render a contract voidable, and I would not have subscribed without the clear promise of free hardware upgrades. I therefore request the following: **Primary request:** Please send me the Whoop 5.0 free of charge, as originally promised. Alternatively, if this is not granted, I request: * Immediate cancellation of my membership, and * A full refund of all membership payments made to date. Please provide a binding response within **14 days**. If no satisfactory solution is offered, I will escalate the matter to **Trading Standards** and the **Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)** and consider further legal steps.

I use Whoop and have done for over 18 months. If you want to make lifestyle changes then whoop is the better of the 3. Long battery life (3 days) , charges on your arm, unnoticeable to wear and doesn’t feel like you’ve got a rock strapped to your wrist when you sleep. Will track things outside the gym such as sleep and stress which is probably two important factors as a HENRY. You can also purchase the bicep band, arm sleeve or boxers if you prefer. It has tonnes of data and graphs and fairly certain you can also export data files to do your own analysis on top. If you want someone purely performance based then garmin is better but lacks the above points.

Apple never promised free hardware with subscription. And I used an Apple Watch series 2 for nearly 6 years with no issues. Apple and Whoop are nothing alike. This bold face lie about free hardware with subscription is enough for me to walk away. I just got the Whoop 4.0 one month ago. They’ve fooled me once. Not again though.

Honestly, I’m working on something better. It’s a wearable that tracks both your physical and emotional state. We’re still prototyping, but if you’re interested, I’d love to get your feedback: [limbico.genoma-group.com](https://limbico.genoma-group.com)

You'll get basically all the tracking (Apple will surely have blood pressure monitoring if Whoop does). And if you like the Whoop app's style of Strain, Sleep, journalling etc.. you can get an app like Bevel or Athlytic for a couple of bucks a month. Personally I'll be ditching my Whoop due to this pricing and using my Apple Watch with Bevel.

Hey, i just got one, its actually quite good, tracks well and the app isnt bad. Im not sure about the accuracy of the hrv spo2 and those variables but the step tracking and sleep track well (steps +-150 steps). I previously free trialed whoop, its obviously not as good but gives similar stats and has the screen free design. I do wish the app connected better to apple health, and give updates like strain. Also quick question about the running modes it says it has gps is that true? Overall great buy for cheap, does the job

Do you care if it has a screen? If your answer is no, then maybe look into whoop. I love that I don't have to worry about scratching it because it doesn't have a screen. You also get more options of how to wear it. I wear it with their Bicep Band because I can't stand to actually wear a watch (but obviously they have wrist options too). I love the information it provides and how it records my workouts and sleep. it is not the cheapest option but I really like it.

Free hardware upgrades with a subscription was one of their main sales pitches, why they were better and different than the competition. It doesn't matter if what they did was legal or not they burned bridges with their user base. Not too mention there is Apple incremental and there is then this 4 years in the making essentially no changes other than you can't use your old accessories suckers!

Me too! I'm trying not to think about how much I've paid over the years but Whoop checks all my boxes compared to competitors. I got a Garmin watch to see if it would replace Whoop but I just can't sleep with it at night, the slim firm of Whoop wins there plus their sleep data doesn't seem accurate compared to Whoop. My hands are too small for a bulky Oura ring and I'm an Android user so no apple watch for me. I do admit, if I was in a worse financial situation, Whoop would have to go.

That’s why I left whoop. The sensor quality is awful and the sensor inputs are manipulated heavily with software. My point of reference is I had a polar for years, the old one that came with a watch. It worked the second you started running or lifting. I hate the fact that the sensor needs time to calibrate to get a comparable reading to a polar. The software driven stuff is just nonsense to me, but maybe I am “old school”.

Mine came today. The bracelet feels cheaper, the sides are so thin/weak mine were pushing outwards meaning the pins were showing and nearly out. I removed the device and bent them back in and it’s better. But feels lower quality metal than my 4.0. Also the shiny metal just looks cheaper/obvious than my 4.0 black one. It does feel a fraction smaller/lighter but the old one didn’t bother me…I think they’d have been better keeping the same size/bands and add more tech or just making it thinner. Only had it on for 5 hours BUT battery is still at 100% and seems to connect to the App quicker. My first 4.0 was quick but recent replacement slow as sometimes. I love Whoop, I love how it’s kept me in check and has no screen. I’ll keep paying…until someone else comes along with a no screen, higher quality device.

I'm writing this long review, because I very much like Whoop, but I'm frustrated with it a lot. Lately I've spent a lot of time looking for alternatives, and I could not find literally anything, not a single one. I've got Whoop 5 MG, while my partner has a couple of months to decide before paying for another year. Writing down my thoughts is the best way for me to stop thinking about it and move to another things. **Whoop bashing starts later at "Privacy policy" <- don't worry Reddit, I got you ;)** For now lets start with what I like about Whoop specifically, which makes it irreplaceable for me: # The form factor * I need something small and comfortable, to actually wear 24/7/365. Nothing else comes close. I can put it on a bicep during kick-boxing, and just stuff it into my underwear when playing drums. * I work at a desk, and I hate having anything hard under my wrist while typing. Whoop closes on itself, which I consider one of it's most underappreciated features. * Ring is out of the question, because I train at a gym. * I sometimes wear a nice watch, and it works well with Whoop. # Continuous monitoring Not enough people talk about this, but when for example Quantified Scientist does any of his amazing reviews, he's comparing Whoop against other watches with activity tracking enabled! Companies don't advertise it, but I managed to gather, that outside of activities, Garmin monitors HR every minute and Apple Watch every 3-7 minutes! Garmin with 10-14 day battery can do high resolution monitoring for 36h, Apple Watch 4-6h, Apple Watch Ultra 10-12h. This would not work for me at all. * We're doing a lot of fast hikes and backpacking, this is 12-16 hours of activity per day! Garmin would die on 3rd day, Apple would be useless. * We're doing festivals, this is again, 8-12 hours of high activity a day. * I work at a desk, but I'm active a lot. I walk and bike when I can. I have a home gym and a drum set, I use them when I have time, multiple times a day! Starting and stopping activities would not work for me at all. This is amazing about Whoop: I can add them post factum, but most of the time they add by themselves. # Stress monitor It relates to continuous monitoring. AFAIK the way Whoop does it rely on access to the continuous stream of high resolution data to find changes in HR and HRV. It doesn't work well for me during a day, but it's extremely valuable at night. I actually improved my sleep more thanks to stress monitor, than the standard sleep tracking. It allows me to easily see what parts of the night were problematic. High stress all night? Probably exhausted. High stress only on the beginning? Probably ate to late. # Actionable data I hate to admit this, but I like how Whoop kind of makes the data into a game. I know it's "stupid", but it works for me and that's what matters. # Whoop 5 "MG" The MG features are actually useful to me. I have it for 10 days at this point. * I have a normal blood pressure, but a very slow bad trend. Bad family history as well. I expect MG to help me monitor this, and encourage me to use my pressure calf more often. So far the results it shows are very in-line. * I occasionally do exhausting HIIT-type activities, multiple days in a row, multiple hours, in direct sun. This is not possible to recreate in lab environment. I'll be checking my EKG during those times. Continuous AFIB monitoring sounds beneficial in my case as well. I don't expect to renew the Life tier next time. I expect to learn all I need to learn in a year. **Now lets get into to problems category, let's start slow:** # Privacy policy It's fine, but... Especially after the 5 release, they went on a very thin ice. Privacy policy by itself is meaningless. They can change it on a whim, and not even tell their users like they did with the terms of service. They can sell the company to "Google" or other data abuser tomorrow, and what would we do? I would delete the data immediately and ask for a refund, but I don't expect I'd get it. In practice, this is about trust, and trust points they have lost. Let's get to the recently popular topic: # Subscription model and Whoop 5 release This is plain ridiculous, bait and switch. Top to bottom. * Changing terms of service without notification * Going back trying to erase previous statements from the Internet * Raising the price 50% And they even tried to put their shareholder to gaslight their users. * **No, this has nothing to do with potentially Whoop loosing money by sending users the device, and they won't extend the membership later. This is not how this works! Whoop and accessories are prohibitively expensive. Whoop Peak costs around one Garmin Watch a year, Whoop Life one Apple Watch Ultra a year. Sorry, but we expected you to eat the risk, you were greatly compensated for it.** * I don't care, that developing and manufacturing the MG is expensive. That wasn't the deal! First, Whoop is already expensive. Second, the deal was, we pay this high price, and we get the next improved device in the subscription. No, battery life is not an improvement, it's a minor update. **On the other hand, I get the problem.** Whoop only does the Whoop band and accessories. They don't sell users phones, computers and cloud subscriptions. They don't profit from selling our data as well. Also, the times, when we had 0 interest rates, and investors were throwing money at anything are gone. This is why they had to rise the price, but: antagonizing users was not a good way of doing that. **What should have happened:** * Bare minimum, which would be in any way defendable: everyone should have got Whoop 5 MG in their mail and Whoop Life upgrade automatically. Then rise the price for the renewal. * If they really cared about their users, they should have been grandfathered-in to Whoop 5 MG with Whoop Life for the same price as they were paying so far. **Now onto just bad stuff about Whoop device itself:** # Calorie counting is just broken This is the reason why my partner considers switching to Garmin. For this kind of device nothing is accurate, the trends count! But the trends are broken. The more fit you get, the fewer calories are getting counted. This is very frustrating and demotivating. I have a clue what's going on. Whoop Coach confirms: calorie counting is HR based, but it doesn't correct for VO2Max, which is just stupid. I have high VO2Max, and if I adjust the calorie count by the ratio to an average person in my age, the count immediately starts to make sense. For my partner, undercounting fits proportionally to their recent VO2Max increase. This is easy, and obvious fix. Garmin does it. With this kind of pricing there are no excuses anymore Whoop: get on it. And the fallowing as well: # GPS tracking is broken This was always a broken gimmick, but now when Whoop uses it to estimate VO2Max, it has to be fixed! Every item on this list makes it useless on its own: * Pause doesn't work - it breaks the pacing. * Precision is broken. No way to control GPS resolution. No way to control if it should snap to paths on the map. I run the same routes, the distances or off up to 5%. Google Maps is useless for hiking. * Tracking stops exactly on 30 minute mark. I have to remember to activate the app before. (No Whoop, don't tell me about phone settings, or I'll unplug your disrespectful AI! If you want it to work, you need to implement it as background service. Strava works just fine). * The whole activity will be lost if I stop it when getting into my building and lose internet. It'll not try to save it later, it just drops it. * No support for indoor activities. **Let's be realistic:** this is too much to fix. Whoop should just integrate with dedicated trackers like Strava. Bare minimum, **allow us to import GPX files.** This would be a very small and powerful thing, there are no good excuses why this is not available. # Recovery score is broken And if recovery is broken, then consider this: journal is broken as well! So much wasted time... For some reason, Recovery prioritizes HRV over RHR, which is broken and useless. In extreme cases, when body is completely exhausted, HRV can shoot itself to the sky. Even Whoop Coach knows this! 3 days of 20,5 strain, RHR +10%, but HRV jumps 300% and Recovery is 99%? This is that fancy AI model we're paying for? Once more, what's frustrating: it's easily fixable. # Still no alarm in light sleep phase I understand Whoop device doesn't do any calculations and this would require constant Internet connection. Fine, give me the option then! # Alarm to soft in Whoop 5 MG Haptic engine is really nice now, in Whoop 4 it was annoying, like someone was drilling into my hand. The downside is: it doesn't wake me up, no a chance, I don't even remember it. # Limited export to Apple Health / Google Health Whoop states about some of the data: "These metrics are calculated using WHOOP’s proprietary algorithms and are **only** available within the WHOOP app." Sorry, but this is my data, and I'll do what I want with it. So I have to copy it over manually now. How disrespectful and dumb is it? # Qi charging This is a no-brainer. I love Whoop charger, but how many posts have you seen about people forgetting to pack their chargers on vacation? Doesn't constant 24/7 monitoring take priority here? Please give us some alternative and standard way to charge. It can be slow and inconvenient, it may require getting the device off body, but it'd be better, than loosing weeks of data. I'll go out on a limb and guess, that Whoop didn't reinvent the wheel, and they do actually use Qi standard, they just block other chargers in software. # No 2-factor authentication Com'on! This is sensitive data. This should have been available since Whoop 1! And today, for this price, with a proper U2F support included! # Bad customer service I had only great experience with the sales and subscription side, but technical part is terrible. For the price we pay, I'd expect premium support all over, and not: * Useless AI responses. * Very long delivery times. * Overpriced accessories sold-out all the time. * Antipatterns when unsubscribing. Respectful company should not do this kind of stuff just because it's not illegal - yet! # Summary Whoop is a great device, with a great app. They seat on their niche with no alternatives. No wonder Whoop 5 MG quickly sold out, including accessories. But now they act more and more like a monopoly and fashion product, instead of a health and sport tool. They care more about profits, then their users. I believe, if any other respectable company will cum up with an alternative, Whoop will quickly disappear. I know I actively look for a way out. I recommend getting Whoop only, if you can't find an alternative. But if: * You just care about health and sleep, not much for sports? Consider Oura Ring. * You don't mind bulky thing on your wrist and turning on activities manually? Garmin and Apple are your friends. (Not native speaker here, I didn't want to use AI, I just did my best)

The standard 5.0 appears to be the same except a better battery and now it'll have a feature like Garmin where it tells you your fitness age compared to your real age. But for $120 more a year, we can access the actual 5.0, the mg. 🙄 What is the point of this subscription based model if you don't get to reap the benefits of the new devices. I've dumped so much money into this company and this is what we get in return? They're pissing down our backs and telling us it's raining. I couldn't roll my eyes harder about this. This is likely going to be what pushes me to cancel my membership. Happy 5.0 day! Edit: Seeing a lot of people feel the same as I do. We should review bomb them on Google. I tried Whoop and Apple Watch. In general, I think it might just be around your WOD habits. I find myself more focused on the tasks and technique needed and/or strategy when not using a tracker. Plus, if you use any kind of grips or wrist wraps it’s not efficient to get all that together. My 2 cents: get a WOD tracker app like BTWB and log your reps, weights and workouts. It’s oddly not perfect but, if you want some sort of tracking going that’s good. TLDR: whoop is expensive and will tell you that you are exhausted when you are obviously exhausted (listen to your body). apple watch is expensive and I was sceptical of the durability when using various weight types.

Whoop I think is the best for CrossFit and not just running. The strain Metric is best for lifting workouts. Journaling features really helped me see what types of behaviors have positive and negative effects. The price point is what made me quit using it. It was fine for running also, but you never got miles or steps, just a strain score. I use a FITBIT inspire now. It was the cheapest, lightest, and longest lasting wearable on the market. The steps feature was more useful for me in regards to overall activity outside of the gym. It does sleep, heart rate, and distance well. It even has a "daily readiness" score similar to Whoops recovery score.

Whoop is excellent at what it does, which is all about strain, recovery, sleep, and HRV. It’s not an exercise tracker in the same way as a Garmin (it has no GPS for example, or screen obviously). If you want 24/7 insights from a device you never take off, it’s great, but it’s its own animal. I love mine. Cycling produces a lot of data. I like Strava and especially Intervals.icu to look at that data. What about HR specifically do you want to share?

I have a Whoop band that I really like for tracking activities. It’s not a watch - doesn’t have a face to it at all - but I think it does a good job tracking sleep/activities and horse riding is an option for activity on it. You don’t pay up front for it - it’s a $35/month service fee. So while not a big expense up front, it obviously adds up over time, which is not necessarily for everyone.  I wear a garmin forerunner on my other wrist too. I like that as well, but I have to say I prefer the app and the data provided by the whoop. I basically only use my forerunner for the actual watch face at this point.  Edit: I just checked whoops website and they do offer a $399 up front fee for 2 year membership

I have both an Oura 4.0 and a Whoop 4.0. In short, the Oura is better for all-around health and insights - it's for normal people that want insights on their day-to-day life. The Whoop is superior for athletes that want focused information they can use to inform their day-to-day training. For example, I rely more on Whoop's insights than I do Oura's when I'm on the fence about going for a run on a given day. However, Oura has a much better and more accurate method of tracking CICO and is much more reliable for sleep and naps (according to the gurus on YT). So it boils down to use case, ultimately. I have a marathon coming up in June, after which I will be letting my Whoop membership lapse and sticking with Oura. I'm not a fan of reverse anchor pricing strategies, and I think it's really shitty for companies to do stuff like this (especially since part of the original draw was a model in which you pay a monthly fee, and you get the device included--now they're pivoting into forcing a renewed subscription to get the 5.0 or the MG, which is not the same thing).

Yes! Same— well marathons. I need the insights Whoop provides. I will say however that the most accurate HR monitor I have is my Garmin HRM Pro but I’m not gonna wear that thing all day and night. Plus Whoop has a community, I am a part of a “team” that is very active on chat which motivates and inspires me. I have an Apple Watch which dies too quickly. I also have a Fenix 8 which is clunky as hell.

Same exact numbers on my whoop MG during a 3 mile, slow pace, recovery walk last night. I hit 155 repeatedly, while actual HR ranged 90-105 per Garmin on my other wrist. My lactate threshold LT2 is 156 and I don't hit that until pushing at least 206 watts++ for a good amount of time, and when I do it is heavier breathing exhaustion etc. No possibility of that on a gentle walk. Very disappointed that whoop has not improved their signal processing algorithms at all from 4.0 to MG. Same d problems.

I switched from WHOOP to Garmin. Never looked back. And I'm a data freak. But with WHOOP I felt like a slave to my data, while Garmin is more like a feedback source. Biggest difference for me was with heart rate data. Whoop shows you how much you've spent in a certain threshold. Garmin does that and also shows you exactly how your heart rate changed over time. That way you clearly see how you perform in intervals, marathons, sprints and mixed trainings. I got WHOOP hoping to get my stress under control. I haven't been able to track it there. Meanwhile, in Garmin you get alerts if your heart rate spikes out of the blue. And that's exactly what I was looking for.

This is gonna sound like a non-answer answer, but it depends on what you want. I have a WHOOP and a Garmin Fenix 5X, so I’ll compare! WHOOP is significantly better at tracking my HR, sleep, recovery (most of the time, sometimes it tells me it’s low but doesn’t tell me much past that), and calories burned based on HR. They also added steps and a new feature where you can track weight training, but the feature needs work. It’s not very user friendly right now but that specific aspect of WHOOP is fairly new, I’ve had it for about 3 years. Garmin is good for most of that same stuff. It’s great tracking your HR for runs, but if you’re a CrossFit/HIIT/interval trainer, it’s inaccurate because it doesn’t stay against your skin well during all the movement without being too tight. I’ve counted my pulse at 150-160 while my Garmin is reading it at 74, which throws off your strain and actual calories burned. If cost is also a factor, Garmin is better. A one time $200-$400 is a GOOD Garmin, though you can get into the $700-$800 range, and I’ve had my Garmin for 6 years. WHOOP right now is $230 a year as a subscription. If I had to choose one as purely a fitness tracker, I’d choose WHOOP 100/100 times. The insights it gives you - if used correctly - are awesome.

Honestly, there's a TON of overlap between Whoop and any other tracker you need. It'll have your HR and HRV, recovery scores, and target strain. The ability to broadcast HR to your phone should let you cover runs and bike rides in strava. Look into various Garmin options if you want something that can record multisport events, I think Coros can do those too. But if you just want something for easy workout tracking that records swim laps and ride/run HR + GPS route, a cheap Fitbit would do the trick as well. Personally, I use a Whoop plus a Garmin Fenix. The whoop is overkill, honestly, since Garmin has a "body battery" recovery metric and can tell you how hard to go with the training on any given day. I use the Whoop because I deal with behaviors very similar to exercise bulimia and I need something that literally tells me, "you've worked hard enough today, it is time to stop." If I didn't need that, a Garmin would absolutely be sufficient on its own.

What's the difference between paying $360 for a 12 month membership with a free device and paying $350 for an apple watch with no subscription? I mean... Yeah, you still have a watch at the end of 12 months that has no subscription, but there's always a newer better $350 watch that you'll probably end buying. And your existing watch value plummets once the new one is available. So long as whoop keeps releasing new devices with new features on a regular basis, seems reasonable to me. I just renewed for 12 months (subscription ended this month) and got the MG for free. If you bought an iPhone right before the new iPhone comes out, should apple be obligated to upgrade your phone when the new one is released?

Sleep data is great with the right tools - SleepWatch on AppleWatch is fantastic for seeing deviations from the usual baseline. Giving insights and recommendations and ideal bedtimes. It’s great to see how a good a workout improves sleep metrics whilst alcohol absolutely destroys it. Once you see this it’s hard to ignore. All of that said, AppleWatch now has an onboard app called ‘vitals’ which basically does the above and shows things in a nice simple format. I’ve had a Whoop and felt it best for those who train a lot of cardio and utilise the rest/recovery feature.

I had a normal Apple Watch with Athlytics ~2 years ago to see if I was done w/ Whoop and it just did not cut the mustard. I actually really like Whoop and I’m gonna stick with it because it just works. It’s less finicky, unobtrusive, and it just does almost everything without my input. I don’t need to do any breathing exercises in order to clock my data for a proper score, battery lasts 5 days, etc. That might not be the case anymore, but, I just want my fitness tracker to do one thing. Like many, I didn’t buy the WHOOP for the subscription model and free device. I bought it to keep it simple while getting insights. Maybe I should be upset that I had to pay $75 for their top o’ da line device, but I also kinda don’t give a shit because it fits so seamlessly into my life in a way that nothing else really has. Like you i have the F8 and Whoop. F8 is great for specific activities with granular detail when you record it. Whoop measures Strain all day long without you having to manually record it everything. E.g. a strenuous gardening activity, walking the dog all gets recorded (you have to assign these if it is not auto assigned by Whoop) without me having to consciously press record. F8 can't do that. So in every single day, Whoop records your daily wellness and activity levels. Far more useful information than metrics for a specific activity (F8 is great for training metrics so it has its place). I should add that assigning strain to a specific activity ain't important to me either. A day score is enough to tell me how active i have been. That and sleep data - much easier to understand. The HRV readings are not far off from each other (F8 vs Whoop). Will probably renew.

I found with the whoop it massively reinforced what I already knew and because there was actual data around it made me make changes to my lifestyle which I would otherwise have just rationalized away. Top examples were alcohol or a really salty takeaway/meal late at night, both had horrendous impacts on my sleep, heart rate and HRV, so much so that I had to make the conscious decision to want to impact my body like that rather than just pretend it's not happening. For you to get everything out of it you need to use the journal religiously.

Other than that it does its job really really well. I hate whoop though. It being maybe 3% more accurate with some metrics isn’t enough for me to have to wear the whoop and watch (smart or otherwise). Couple that with the subscription cost. It’s just not worth it for your everyday/local comp person. They’re all trash if you have tattoos on your wrist though. The internal HR monitor struggles there. I use a chest strap or just rotate the watch to the inner part of my wrist.

I've had the MG for a bit over a week, I'm pretty disappointed, the blood pressure readings are just not accurate enough to solely rely on them, so I'm still left using the BP cuff, so it doesn't really give me any advantage since I still need to check my BP manually. The EKG is a nice feature, but I don't have any afib problems so I don't really need to check this frequently, I could just buy a standalone EKG unit for 40$ and theres no need to pay any subscriptions, on top of that the only time where I would want to check for afib would be during exercise since sometimes I experienced weird heartbeats during exercise, but if you are using whoop to record an activity you can't use the EKG feature, and even if you are not recording an activity the ekg doesnt seem to work if your heartbeat is slightly elevated or your hands are mildly sweaty, so another useless feature. On top of that the whoop age thing has just proven to be a gimmick, I've seen people reporting a younger age even though they smoke and drink, this bothers me as it shifts from the usually scientific metrics that whoop has been offering into a meaningless gamification. The reality is that you can estimate your speed of aging with just your vo2max score, and plenty of other bands offer vo2max. At this point I'm looking at switching to the Huawei fit 4 pro since I want to stick to android, I wish there was a screenless option

I just did, I'm not happy with the pricing, but I monitor my BP daily and it's a hassle, to get a good reading you need to average 3 measurements and make sure you take the reading after sitting for a few mins and far from coffee and food intake. I'll be comparing the MG readings with my cuff for a while because I'm very skeptical a band can offer accurate readings, but if it does to me it's worth the price, if it doesn't then I'll be canceling the membership

I have the Morpheus strap. It works great and it is inexpensive. In that past, I used a whoop with the arm band which I loved because it synchs to apple health. I'm hopeful for the day when apple will come up with something besides the watch that synchs to the rings.

I don’t recommend anything tbh. I used a whoop for a bit, but I don’t get the point. You can train on days when you don’t feel 100% and you can rest on days when you do feel 100%. Plus, exercise is a pretty poor mechanism for weight loss, so the calories burned doesn’t really make a difference as my TDEE is my TDEE regardless. So I ended up ditching mine. TL;DR: whoop turned around was fine sorry for the rant

I would agree with you on that. I had Garmin fenixes for years, Garmin Epix pro, Apple Watch Ultra, amazfit trex 3 (current watch) and just got a whoop. Imo for weightlifting nothing beats the Apple Watch (ultra or not doesn’t matter) due to all the different apps available. I was using Hevy and the ability to do a live workout between the watch and the phone at the same time was dope: want to change exercice or do more complex changes during your sessions, you simply edit the workout on the phone. But if you want to do just a 5lbs increment on your lift, you can do it from the watch directly live. Only thing I am eager to test with whoop, which is a important part my decision to do the free trial for a month, is to see muscle strain and how it work in tandem with the cardio based strain. Whoop is the only wearable to do that ( but it seems you can do it with Bevel now)

Haha fair :D You know what they say: fake it until you make it lol Tbf, I need more time with the Whoop, but I did one weightlifting session, and I liked how it calculated muscular strain but I found the strength trainer not as good as say Hevy for managing your workouts. I think it will be manageable as I get use to it.

Drove me crazy, even got a bicep band for the AW and still missed 15 minutes of a workout. I was on Whoop for 18 months and got tired of the subscription, but it was a workout tank, never failed. I love the AW but these minor but majorly disruptive annoyances have got to change. Even with the COROS you have to hold the main button down for 5 secs to disrupt any workout and then you have to hold it down again for 3 secs to finish it. I box and I cannot start and activity on the AW and throw it in a gym bag with a HR strap, I can with the COROS.

When your membership renews, you'll get the 5.0 for free unless you downgrade/upgrade. So you do still get it for free, just not immediately. If you want it immediately, you can renew your membership and get it for free or just pay for the bands. It's still an option to get it for free you just have to wait. People in this sub just love to complain about whoop.

I think people just want to be mad at this point. It is still free, and there are options. People just don't want to wait, and that's okay, I didn't either, so yea, I did pay for the 5.0 yesterday, and I'm excited. This sub is a bunch of crabs in a bucket that's a heck of a lot of money to spend on a product you apparently hate and have hated.

I wear an Apple Watch S9 and I have a soft plastic cover on it. I have done this with my past 3 watches and they always look brand new when I take the cover off. No problems. I also wear a Whoop band, and I did get a small scratch on a part of the metal that connects to the band. Its hardly noticeable, and I did switch the band out to a rubber one from the fabric one they give you. Of course, Whoop doesn't have a screen so it's not really an issue to begin with.

Founding member here. Never "cancelled" a subscription faster than when I received that email 2 years ago. Been following the noise of this new announcement for the laugh and I'm not surprised even a little bit. Whoop(s) has turned into a marketing company. Paying top athletes to represent them and they have to afford it somehow! Apple-like announcement in every way. Recycled tech, software update, ope and you have to pay top dollar for it. FYI been an apple watch ultra user since I cancelled. Charge it for 15 mins every morning when I make breakfast. No regrets.

I had the worst experience with Whoop’s customer service. It feels like their emails are being answered by AI. I returned the device before the trial period ended, yet they still charged my credit card for the annual payment. Despite repeatedly emailing them for a refund, I keep getting irrelevant requests like asking for my date of birth. Think twice before purchasing from Whoop. They sent me a pre-owned device with noticeable scratches on the back, which was extremely disappointing. I regret my decision and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

I have a Whoop and Oura, and neither of those seem ideal for your use case. They don't provide continuous SpO2 readings, just a single daily value for SpO2 (I believe this is averaged overnight but not 100% sure). I take multiple times daily SpO2 readings with a finger pulse oximiter and they don't correlate super great with the wearable readings; the Whoop seems to underreport much more than the Oura. Here's a plot of the last 4 months to compare, with the average of my finger readings during the day in green: [https://imgur.com/a/dOAgBcm](https://imgur.com/a/dOAgBcm)

I think what people are more upset about is the fact that they’ve released a premium version with features we won’t get, which was essentially a broken promised from what was stated when we all signed up. They said if you renew your membership, you’ll get the newest hardware, but now they gave us a, sure, upgraded version, but then made an actual proper upgraded version and put that behind an extra paywall. The 5.0 isn’t really any different than the 4.0, the real upgrade is the MG, and that’s not available unless you want to shell out a decent amount more per year extra. They should have just released the MG and called it the 5.0 and raised the subscription a bit, if they really needed to do that.

I was with whoop for 4 years. Left last year cause I just couldn’t justify the cost since I haven’t been active enough to need more than my Garmin when I do an activity, plus some bad relationships with sleep metrics. That being said, I’ve thought about coming back and Oura seems the way to go depending. I think Oura/Whoop is comparable to the Apple/Garmin situation. Apple is a great smart watch that’s good at fitness. Garmin is a great fitness watch that’s good at smart watch stuff. Whoop is a great tool for heavy athletes, and Oura is a great tool for people who may not be as serious about it.  For me personally, I couldn’t care less about strain atm. I just want to find a way to maximize my Deep and REM sleep on as few hours as possible, and buying a second hand Oura 3 for $100 seems like a better route than Whoop again

I would say Whoop plus a normal watch. Whoop does not even have a screen so it should satisfy the protocol. Alternatively you could get a fitness ring if you do not want to wear two things on your wrist. As far as I know, all Garmin models come with smart watch functions (ie they have a built-in notification capability). I also found this: https://nowatch.com It looks like an analogue watch but appears to offer health functions, yet no notifications etc.

Yea - I decided to jump in now rather than wait, backing that this will come through shortly like it did for competitors. I didn't want to wait and then be even further away from getting black friday discounts as I'll extend then, assuming I'm still happy. It puts my ending date 17 months away if I choose to part ways - Honestly it doen't seem like a huge update, but I'm in it for the no screen and bicep band. In 17 months (or by black friday) I'll recess what the competitors are doing. I don't like seeing this kind of thing removed - Although I'm 7 days away from the 6 month mark so it would be at that super irritating point to miss out Still deciding what I think of all this. I LOVE the bloodwork idea - But that's a long way away for Aus and I'm betting way too expensive. I did copy paste the tests though and will be getting atleast the medicare supported ones done (I was already in the process of major blooodwork, this just picked up a few that werent on my radar)
