Hoka Speedgoat 5 mid trail running / hiking boot (goretex) for a recent 3 week pet sit in Sweden. Light and comfortable for long’ish hikes / bike rides in outdoor gear, and bright / colourful / smart enough for wearing with jeans to bars etc. Took nothing else and had no issues. Only travelled with an Osprey Daylite 26 +6 & an 8L Cotopaxi sling so space was at a premium.
Btw I have been a lover of Hoka Speedgoat for several years. I use a GTX mid version & use it for mostly trail running in ❄️ winter time. I use the La Sportiva Bushido outside of winter. * hiking boots vs trail runners https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouverhiking/comments/1ltydv7/hiking_boots_vs_trail_runners/ * What shoes do you swear by? https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouverhiking/comments/o77olh/what_shoes_do_you_swear_by/

Hey OP, I asked a similar question a few years ago and I got the same spiels but I do still think that a high-cut runner isn't a bad idea. I don't think it's completely removing your ankle from the running equation, just giving you extra support. Something like the hoka speedgoat mid seems like a good shoe provided they fit right for you. I've also really wanted to try the Nike Kiger because it's a pretty low stack trail shoe and I think that would feel a lot more stable. Currently I have the Nike zegama and the fit is perfect just feels a bit tall.
It's a tough one, where I live you pretty much need to have both. I often use my speedgoats 5 gtx for short and quick hikes in the forest, without goretex they will be completely soaked. In summer time/dry times I use my speedgoats 5 without goretex. If you are only running with them, don't mind getting wet and they dry for the next time you use them, there is no real reason for goretex.
If you plan on using them on both trail and in town because you only want to deal with one pair, then it's a easy trail running decision. Speedgoats are awesome. I had the 4s, have a regular pair of the 5s and a gtx pair of the 5s. I love them. From the pictures online, it seems like a pretty easy terrain for speedgoats 7 without gtx.

I hope this isn’t a completely pointless post as the specific model - HOKA Speedgoat 5 - isn’t available and I can’t vouch for the 6 but hopefully it’s similar. North of 200lbs, this shoe was a revelation to me, I didn’t realise at the time that trail shoes could be as cushioned. I never had any issues with stability either. I’m not looking forward to replacing them.
