"As far as grip goes, all three are excellent. It's truly amazing how good they are at gripping scree, sand, and unstable terrain."

"Since wearing Hoka Speedgoats, now for years, I have not rolled my ankles once. ... The reason is that the sole is super wide and tapers aggressively from the fabric, outward into a wedge shape."

"I have additionally had issues with the Vibram soles delaminating from THREE SEPARATE PAIRS of Speedgoats now. So they are struggling with some quality control issues with their adhesive. ... I think their adhesive just degrades with time. The shoes were probably manufactured and sat in a warehouse long before they made their way to my feet. Plus I think the design of their sole contributes to the problem."

"they break down incredibly fast ... each time it feels like they last for a shorter number of miles ... For me, they've started breaking down after about 200 miles ... my current pair has holes in the front of the sole ... My other 2 pairs got a hole near the heel part of the sole; rocks would get in and while running they would hit my heel which was quite painful"

"I’d wager the speedgoats’ sole holds up well in the PNW, but they seem to essentially dissolve in hot dry conditions ... The AZT killed my speedgoat soles after a week, it’s really not a great compound for hot/dry/sandy"

"6 blisters me."

"The SG6 is like running on a block of wood compared to SG5"

"Speedgoats use Vibram Megagrip which is one of the best compounds for pure grip on most surfaces but the trade off is that it is not durable for consistent road/pavement abuse. ... You can certainly use it for that, just don’t expect anything approaching the life span of a road or cross training shoe. ... megagrip and the SG6s deeper lugs both being particularly susceptible. ... I’ve put around 120-150k on my current Speedgoat 6’s (very close to 50/50 road and trail miles) and the tread is very noticeably worn down while the upper looks new."

Really depends on what kinds of trails you'll be running, and what kind of milage. I have and like the AP 5 a lot, but use it mostly for muddier and/or steeper terrain on longer runs. It has aggressive lugs, that you don't need for smoother, flater single track. They'll of course work for that, but won't be as fun. Same with the Speedgoat (which I also own) but they're a little more stable, while not a agile. If you're coming from the road and some fast running, something like the Salomon Genesis might work better. Or even the Sense Ride, if you'll be doing mostly shorter runs. The Sense Ride is what I use for "speed" work on the trails, and it's a fun shoe. But it doesn't have deep lugs or a lot of cushioning/stack height, so I don't use it for longer runs.

But the Speedgoat is even clunkier (I have both). And for the stack height, I think the Agility Peak is pretty nimble.

The Speegoat 6 in wide didn't help me any, but going up a half size did. Might be worth trying a pair like that on. But it's still not perfect for me, and I plan to try the Merrell Agility Peak next, because their MTL Long Sky 2 fits me so well, with a generous footbox (but the Long Sky's a much different shoe).

I got the wide fit.Raced in them on a hilly trail yesterday and they were superb. Grippy on all terrain and very comfortable. Just my experience coming from a saucony trail show.

They aren’t great. I loved the 5s but the 6s are dead feeling and hard and the shoe itself feels odd. Disappointed.

I'm on my third pair of Mach 6 (wide) for road runs and I'm looking for something with a similar fit for trail runs. I owned several pairs of the Torrent 2 and loved them, but swear they got narrower when they redesigned them as the Torrent 3 and haven't really found a trail shoe I love since. I recently tried Speedgoat 6 in wide, and I generally like them, but after a 70-minute run with about 2k ft of vert in the Marin Headlands, my pinky toe is kind of busted (even with heel lock lacing). Curiously, I ran up Mt. Tam (\~2500 ft, 3.5 miles) then back down a rather steep trail and didn't have issues. I ran the Double Dipsea (14.5 miles, 4.4k ft vert) in the Saucony Peregrine 13 (wide) and got bad blisters on my heels (even with heel lock lacing). I still wear the shoes for long walks on the weekends and like them -- just didn't seem to do well on all those stairs. I haven't had much luck with Topo or Altras. Any recommendations?

Honestly I don't get the hate. First Speedgoats for me and after about 50 miles the whole shoe has softened and moulded to my foot like a glove. I always go wide in Hoka without a doubt, if makes a world of difference. Great traction, fit and cushion for me. The upper feels durable although not the most breathable upper I've had. Seems like a solid shoe for me which suits my road to trail antics. Haven't tried running anything over half marathon distance in them though, so not sure how they'd do on an ultra.

As someone who runs in Speedgoat 6s, is if you do get them, get the wide version. Even if you think you don't have wide feet. I never used to be a wide in Hokas and then when they changed fitting and style in the year of the Clifton 7, I've had to go wide ever since for them to be comfortable. My only gripe with the SG6 is the lockdown is a bit meh which caused me a bruised toe recently on a long fast descent during a race. They start to feel a bit firm under foot on longer distances to me. I mainly use them for trail training runs and anything upto a trail half marathon.

I tried on some speed goat 6s and I like them. I run in hokas for half’s and marathons so I am a fan of the brand. Have you scrambled in speed goats on class 3? Any issues?

I just started getting into trail running more the past few months from road running. My feet run wide so I got the speedgoats in the wide option. They are top notch so far. (1/2 sized up too for what its worth)

I've had them since September and they are amazing to me. I think the criticism comes from people whose foot doesn't fit correctly. My foot works perfectly with them and they are super comfortable. The sole resists very well after a lot of technical terrain, and even though I have had to use them on some asphalt at times, they continue very well. In general they are worth it, give them a chance and they will surprise you.
