Versatile road-to-trail, but struggles on wet, technical downhills.

I am a fellow widefoot. ordinary speedgoat 6 are too narrow for me, but I tried the wide (W next to the name) version - I love them. really lots of toe space.
tried altra peak 5 wide.. toes have lots of space, bud middle is still too narrow. i am using hoka speedgoat 6 wide and it's perfect. ran 31km today, last 10km in rain and have no blisters. I have them for a year and are worn out (almost no buds left) - that'why I tried altra... but will order SG6 wide again, even if 7 comes out in a few months.
I Like the Hoke Speed Goat 6 Wide
I had same problem with speedgoat 6 wide and Topo mtn racer 3, among other lot of shoes. Mafate speed 4s are a little wider/more volume than the speedgoats if you want to try hoka. I dont run on them more than 3 hours because they still feel narrow to me and cant size up more. Shoes that fit me well and could work for runnable with some technical sections: Asics trabuco 13s: My do it all shoe. From runnable to really technical, the upper gets ripped of easy. Not tall, not too soft but still cuishioned. I have run on them 10+ hours race in very technical high altitude terrain. Asics fujilite: If you are not heavy they could work. I use them for shorter racers and high intensity workouts. Very confortable, but dont have a rockplate and you could feel too much ground if the terrain is rocky. Merrel agility peak 5: Easy running and can handle some technical sections. Dont know if the 6 fits in the same way. Nike Zegama 2: Confortable for easy to moderate terrain. Too soft for really technical stuff in my opinion. Fits nice. Sportiva Akasha 2 and tomir 2: Maybe not the best for the runnable sections, but nice on the technical ones. They are roomy and confortable. I havent tried them but thinking of getting a pair of mount to coast T1 for this years big objetives. They are supposed to be roomy and confortable for long races.
500km is in the "normal" durability range for some shoes. May be the low end, but decent. Depends also in the terrain you run.
what about the fit? Are they still as narrow as the SG6?
Asics trabucos are wide and roomy. The speedgoats 2E are actually very narrow and low volume. Even the mafate speed 4 in normal width are roomier. I tried topo MTN racer 3. They are wide in the forefoot, but narrow in the arch/midfoot. Can't wear them Agility peak 5 is also wide and high volume.
Have a look at Asics line up. Trabuco and trabuco max. They are plenty wide. I tried speedgoats 2E, they are not any wide. Mafate 4s are actually wider, but still not enough for me if I'm going long.
Lowish stack, good grip outsole and not too soft. I have a quite difficult foot and not much shoes fit me well. I use to take for this kind of races trabuco 11 and 13. I would try tomir 2.0, akasha 2, trabuco, mafate speed 4/speedgoat, slab genesis, Topo MTN racer. This year im running 45km +4.000m in high mountain very technical terrain and im thinking to try the mount to coast T1. Last year I did a similar one, 43km +3.700m/-4.000m with the trabuco 13s and quite happy with them, i ended with "fresh" legs.
Same happened to me with the speedgoat 6. First time using it in a very technical rocky 27k race, i did not rolled my ankle (i “only” fell twice and badly during the race lol) but i’ve been dying with plantar fasciitis for two weeks already since the race. It hurts so bad! And I really cannot see how I’m going to go back running without any pain (sorry for kinda hopeless comments rsrs)
To further the discussion of what is the all around “BEST TRAVEL SHOE (closed toe)” here is something to add and discuss: When I was traveling in Brazil in March, I met soooo many European travelers. Most of them were wearing Salomon “trail runners” I believe they were. [Here is a link to the Salomon shoe ](https://www.zappos.com/p/womens-salomon-speedcross-6-mahogany-rose-hushed-violet-iced-aqua/product/9721367/color/1098468) I think the women were wearing. The men were mostly wearing it in Black. I did a lot of hiking in Brazil in my worn out Asics and wish I had a shoe with more tread. I 've been thinking about getting the Salomons but they really do scream "outdoors" and I don't know if they would be "cute" enough to do light walking in say, London or Paris or Rome... Are these SALOMONS really the all around best shoe for walking, trekking, etc in any type of climate? I know H[OKAs (especially Speedgoat 6)](https://www.zappos.com/p/womens-hoka-speedgoat-6-grey-skies-cosmic-grey/product/9920044/color/1108513?zlfid=191&ref=pd_detail-v2-2-c_v2p_p) are discussed often. I ended up giving in and buying a pair last Spring but I notice that the nubs / grip / lugs wear down pretty fast. (They are indeed very very comfortable, but also the colorways are intense and make me definitely stand out as a gringa. haha. ) I think the Salomons might be more durable? Furthermore, I know we all are looking for that UNICORN shoe that won’t look so Doofy when we are out walking and just browsing shopping in cute Italian towns…. but can also do some light hikes. And for those it seems the consensus are: Vessi OnCloud NewBalance [Altra ](https://www.zappos.com/search?term=altra%20shoes%20women)(zero drop) What are your ABSOLUTE go-to one-bag unicorn shoe (closed toe)?? I am going to be in Europe for a little bit, but later Mexico and maybe Brazil too. cheers! Oh, yeah, I forgot to point out an important thing. Bonus if **waterproof**, but I have noticed that mostly it doesn't matter because if shoes get wet with a huge downpour, they're going to get wet . I once bought a pair of Sorels waterproof sneakers and I hate them so much as they were really inflexible and uncomfortable. . I can't return them though. Thanks! EDIT: WOW ! So many valuable insights and responses. Thank you so much! Seems like a lot of you enjoy the Salomon XT6. it is definitely trending. My concern is that it might not feel comfortable as a street shoe for the other 50% of the time I'm walking around with it and not hiking because of the firm tread and the lack of cushion. I'm leaning toward TOPO and the best thing about REI is that I can get that shoe and try it on for a few days.!!
oh that is cool. Are they all white sneakers, or various colors? I feel like all women in the USA wears white sneakers if they are walking around... but that could just be my reverse-culture shock after being in Mexico for the last 10 months...
I hear you. I know everyone is going to have their own opinion. but what I love about Reddit is that I posted this question and now I have 5-10 other shoe brands or shoe models that I can look into as options I never heard about. That's why I really value this community! The recommendations that have popped up often in these comments are : Salomon XT6 Topo Blundstone Merrill Altra Vionic Vessi Anyway, I am enjoying reading everyone's comments! I have a lot of shoes in my shopping cart LOL .... not sure exactly which ones I'll keep , but bought a pair of Topo yesterday and will try in the next week how they feel. I do NOT like the way they look... :/
I got a pair of Topos to try but returning them - they are too frumpy. I don't actually like the Altra Wilds, they just feel a bit weird on the tongue and were irritating the entire 3 miles I wore them. They also do look a bit doofy. I also got these [Salomons ](https://www.zappos.com/p/womens-salomon-genesis-carbon/product/9939399/color/8914)and I'm glad I gave it a trial run of walking 4 miles in them because I got a giant blister on the bottom of my foot. Does that mean they are slightly too big? Either way, not great! (I like the silhoutte of the shoe and the colorway but if they're gonna give me blisters then nope!!). I think I still like the Hokas the best. I haven't gotten the oncloud because they are too expennsive! tldr: still don't have a favorite shoe.
Thanks for the note! I did get a pair of [Genesis by Salomon.](https://www.zappos.com/kratos/p/womens-salomon-genesis-carbon/product/9939399/color/8914) I like the look, but wearing them around for 2 miles I feel like I'm getting a hot spot in the balls of my feet whcih does not seem normal. Maybe it is that the footbed and tread are so hard? How do you like the Salomon Xt6 for walking for 10 miles? That is about what I would do every day.
thanks! I jsut started noticing that REI carries them and I am now curious as many people have mentioend TOPOS in the comments. Seems like a contender!!!! Ok, so you say the TOPOS have way better support than the Altras?
I know i know! haha. And when I wore my oldddd af Asics around in the trails of Northern Brazil for 7 days, they got REALLY WET and I didn't care. They were gross, but they could dry in the sun. I wore wool socks. I think you're right that most of the waterproof shoes don't do a great job and they are more xpesnive anyway. As per my original post, I was not lookiing for a fancy hiking shoe. I was looking for an all-around shoe that can purpose for some trails (I'm pretty good on my feet) and for the city/ shopping etc.
I wanted to like Merrel Moabs but I really do feel like they look clunky and I just can't manage with them as "all around shoe that looks cute" Thanks!
OK thank you so much for this thorough report! I like the way Chelsea boots look but because I am always traveling and trying to keep weight minimal , I would never get them. When you say lightweight, which model is it? Can you share a link? How much do rhey weigh? More than 2 lbs? As for the [Taos winner](https://a.co/d/08u4f3Tt) - I see it is a high top shoe. While I see the nice aesthetics of it, I simply find that it is way too warm to wear high top shoes in most of my travels (mexico, Southeast Asia) . Let me know when you travel with them and walk 10-20,000 steps a day in mild to warm climates. I have a feeling that they could feel quite hot based on the construction of the shoe (leather ankle high). But I could be wrong ! I will look into the Dansko sandals you mentioned Thank you
Thank you for sharing!! Do you feel like \- they have good arch support \- they have good stability \- they are comfortable and good on pavement/ city walking?
this is what i think i am experiencing... that the hard sole of the Salomon is tough on pavement. It's not cushiony/ giving. So when I wear my Hokas, that is the soft bounce I like. Hmmm .. this is a tough call. But yeah, for more adventurous trips, the Salomon could be the perfect match!! (thinking Brazil, Vietnam, Laos, Cape Town, Ethiopia, etc)
hi! I got [Salomon Genesis ](https://www.zappos.com/kratos/p/womens-salomon-genesis-carbon/product/9939399/color/8914?ref=pd_vh)and I walked 3 miles on pavement = a bit oddly painful , like I can feel the pavement? and 3 miles on a trail = excellent. Is it because the sole is so sturdy that it does not have cushion for pavement? What is the MODEL of SALOMON you are using and since you love them so much, can you tell me about the cushion or feel when you walk on pavement with them? thanks!
Thanks , yeah, I have bought these Merrell Moab 3 and gave it a trial run. Went from a trail (excellent support) straight to a dinner and I felt pretty doofy at dinner .. they just really look like an outdoor shoe. I eliminated these from my option
thanks for the idea but i can't do blundstones because they are just so incredibly heavy and just don't work for my travel lifestyle (sometimes I am on the move for 4-5 months and in different climates where i simply do not even touch closed toe shoes or pants beacuse it is too hot)
ooooo, thx i have not heard of these but I just searched them these [Vionic Loafers look really great ](https://www.zappos.com/p/womens-vionic-uptown-rose-violet-suede/product/9901492/color/1126972?utm_source=google&utm_medium=pla_x&utm_campaign=22096058064&utm_term=_o_58017320&utm_content=_g__w__l_CjwKCAjw-dfOBhAjEiwAq0RwIzs6lmE3a117Of4yGouyyM-Hp-170TObu0PJ5XiKAK2-rEhTuQ-hMhoCf0IQAvD_BwE&gclid=CjwKCAjw-dfOBhAjEiwAq0RwIzs6lmE3a117Of4yGouyyM-Hp-170TObu0PJ5XiKAK2-rEhTuQ-hMhoCf0IQAvD_BwE). Can you tell me about the arch support??? Do they have pretty good grip when walking around , like for wet sidewalks?
Thank you for the advice. How long have you worn this shoe? Did you feel it was comfortable out of the box? (I ask because I just wore them at the store and did not enjoy the feel). Do you think tehy do well on all surfaces including wet pavement? or only on trail? Do you feel they have good arch support? Thanks for helping!
