That's weird. My terraventure 2 lasted 1000+ kilometers, mtn Racer 2 ~900km and also had the mt-5 that also lasted for 700km or so. I currently have the mtn Racer 4 and no issues so far (although they only have 100km)
Topo Athletic Trailventure 2. Above your budget with only a 5mm drop, but a natural toebox and the widest, most comfortable hiking shoes I've ever used (I have very wide feet to be clear). Better than any Altras or other brands I've tried
If you want some that have wide toe box, only mild drop and still have a rock plate for protection against rocky terrain, I recommend Topo Athletic Trailventure 2. Just note that Topo is narrow in the heel and midfoot, although wide in the toebox.
I would give the Topos a try. I've had two pairs of Trailventure 2 (and several pairs of Altras) and have found them to be similar in width to Altras. I think Altra are slightly longer in length especially the Lone Peaks. As mentioned previously by other posters - you really need to try them on. In my experience the Topos are a bit more rigid than the Altras, which I find more reassuring in use. As with all hiking gear decisions, it depends on what fits you best and what makes you feel good on the trail!
Have you tried topo athletic? It sounds like you're describing the terraventure, which I love for the reasons you described
Terraventures have better grip and stability. They are less cushy but have a rock plate so it balances out, unless you need the extra cushion.
Topo Terraventures. But I’d avoid the WP version unless you’re running in snow.
In general, not specific to that shoe. As the other commenter said, they fill with water and don’t drain. They also make your feet hot. I only use them in snow since the warmth is a bonus at that point and snow melt will freeze your feet.
