The xt6 is a trail running shoes isn't it? If you already have them and it fits, run in those for a bit. Then you can figure out if you want something wider, less drop, different tread etc. Brands fit everyone differently, some people love shoes that give me awful blisters. If you decide you enjoy trail running, then maybe ask this sub what shoes might be best for the types of trail you'll be on and the type of fit you like. Then go try some on, ideally with the help of someone at a store, though I've had mixed experiences with shoe store staff, especially when i was a beginner and didnt know what to ask for.

The best ones are the ones that fit!! I have wide toes and wore Solomon trail runners for a long time. I switched to Merrell Moab hikers a couple of years ago. Both are 13 Wide (EEE).

The downside of trail runners to me (Solomans) was I would sometimes get foot bruises on sharp rocky ground. I switched to hiking shoes (Merrell's) and I feel it's a better compromise between trail runners and boots. Pretty light and more comfortable.

My Solomans had a rock plate (thank you for pointing out my omission), but I feel a big difference with my Murrell Moab's. To each there own, I know trail runners are the favorite, the Moab works better for me (I have dainty feet, I guess).

Both Asics gortex and Salomon gortex Ive found to be the best I've used.   I get probably 2-3000km out of them?   Say 8km a day of sandstone gravel fire trails and rocky escarpments for a year. I  would get 12-18 months out of them.   Sometimes I just wear out heel rubber and foam is still good so I build it back up using Sikaflex or something to go another 6 month lol

I use Solomon trail runners, non-waterproof because my feet overheat easily in the summer. They've seen the presis in the summer without issues, and have decent grip.

What do you want to do? I love my Solomon trail runners but if I'm sliding down shale I'll take the Keens all day long. Both are good brands in my experience.

I have the Catamount 2 and I really like it (ran in them today), but actually prefer the Cascadia. Also, another vote for skipping GTX. You probably don't need it (or want it) for most runs.

Over the years I’ve worn trail runners from Merrill and Salomon, or standard running shoes from Nike and NB. A comfortable fit was the main criteria. Even on wet ground I’d rather have fast drying sneakers than boots.

I have owned 3 pairs of Salomon XT-6’s and I find them to be incredibly comfortable but somewhat lacking in durability. Again I’m on my third pair so for me the pros greatly outweigh the cons but they’re not my go to trail runner. If you’re looking for something else at an even better price point I’d recommend the La Sportiva Bushido II. They’re my favorite pair of trail runners I’ve tried.

I like Oboz boots. I also like my Solomon trail runners. I've done massive days in both, totally depends what you are more comfortable in. I do personally find benefit in some ankle protection and waterproofness. Some folks poopoo that... but I bet they have wet feet.

I did the W earlier this year and used my Salomon goretex trail runners and they were amazing! They were light and comfy. Just bring an extra pair of socks in case it rains and your feet get wet. I also had my tevas to wear at night and walking around camp which was a must to give your feet a breather.

I slaved over this question recently and went with Salomon xt6. More fashionable but also comfortable and fairly durable. So far happy with them.

God I hate the XT6. I wear the X ultra pioneer from years ago. The XT6 is marketed towards gullable 20 year olds who will pay anything to look cool, fair play - genius marketing by Salomon. My shoe is essentially the same thing without the wanky silver paint job and a lot more comfortable.

XT-6 model is based on a trail runner from 2013. The newer models have newer materials, but aren't really for trail running/hiking anymore. I know this because 3 years ago I used a pair as my main hiking shoe and they started having holes in them very quickly and I complained to Salomon. They gave me a credit, but told me that the XT-6 is more of a casual/city shoe and not intended anymore for actual trails. Basically it's a gorpcore shoe for trendy fashion. There are tons of other models from Salomon that will work better. Their website even has a little quiz you can take to help pick shoes. Most major brands have that now.

Most running shoes become ice skates but a lot of trail runners have studs that provide a solid grip. I didn't have any issues with my Solomon trail runners when it was 4° in Colorado last winter. That being said, It would have been a nightmare in my Saucony running shoes.

I was intrigued by Salomon’s as well but the most common knock on them was a narrow foot box. I decided to get them anyway but even after a few weeks I went back to Merrill due to the indeed small foot box.

I have Salomon gore-tek trail runners. I bought these 5 years ago and used them all over Australia and hike regularly with them. If you want a bit of ankle support go for the hiking boots but on the trails around here you will be fine in trail runners. I found the gore-tex to be worthwhile just because the trails can get muddy after winter and you are able to just step thru them. Took them to do the overland trail in Tassie and held up fine as well. Salomon currently have a sale on.

Solomon’s are great. The mud doesn’t pack up op the sole, super waterproof. The tread is ultra durable. $120-$150 but I play 300 days a year and they lasted about 18 months.

I just found this IRONICALLY after wearing my XT6’s out, in what seems to be a little amount of time. So I came to see if other people had the same issues. I have a pair, and I have I fact hiked about 30mi in them, solely on trails. Well my job requires a decent amount of walking and my Brooks were wearing out, so I decided that my Salomon’s were so comfy, I’d just wear them to work. Only down side is…. The small amount of walking on pavement has done 10x’s more damage than any hike…. Mesh near my pinky toes is was going mainly, it’s torn and new holes show up over time. Plus the ball or base of my sole is almost completely gone now. I think I’ve owned them for a year? So I’m not sure if they’re “worth the price” if you plan to wear them daily. That being said, I will be purchasing another pair or two, they’re very comfortable. TLDR: I hiked in my 30mi, but daily wear on pavement, has tore them up considerably faster. I plan on buying another pair, regardless, just gonna wear them less!

I hike in waterproof Salomons (Soles are not stiff and flex just enough with the ground) and wear “loose” wool socks and have no problem in single digits on packed or loose snow. Having air pockets is key. Don’t wear tight socks or have boots that are tight, go a half size up if they fit “just right” with thick socks.

I just ordered a pair from my local running store, only commenting to suggest you try them on first. I'm a 12 in Salomons and a 12 to 12.5 in Hokas, and I had to size up to a 13 in the 001s.

I went through three pairs on two back-to-back Caminos (Portuguese Coastal with my Mom then the Frances). First were a pair to Topo that I wore through the back heel a little after Logrono . Second, a pair of Salomon's that I didn't realize were Gore-Tex until it was too late and I abandoned in Leon. Third were Hoka Speedgoats. Those lasted me till I got to Finistere, but the insoles had been destroyed at that point. I will always have replacement insoles in the future and probably change them out every 150-200 miles. Granted, I'm not a light person...250lbs (115kg or so) with a short stride. The Speedgoats were by far the most comfortable. Also, I opted to go a full size up on the Speedgoats.

I got a pair of XT6s and were wildly uncomfortable. I then got a pair of Keen Jasper Zionics and have been the comfiest shoes I own. A bit chunkier than the XT6s but they’re a good cross between street and functional for off-road etc. I just came back from Korea and did a lot of city/off-road walking, light hikes and they held up well

Yeah an approach shoe will suck and wear out fast during the long miles on the trail and trail runners are too squishy and don't grip well for the ascents, there's not really a great answer for this. I'd say probably something like Solomon XT-6 but they might not be "sensitive" enough for what OP is looking for.

On it right now. I had trail runners (Salomon XT-6) and they gave me the worst blisters of my life. Granted, the shoes were not really broken in but I typically don’t get blisters from any shoes, so I was heartbroken that this happened. Aside from the usual “make sure the shoes are broken in, and that they are at least half a size to a size up”, make sure they are actually cushiony. You’re not on the trails as much as you’re on boardwalk and cobblestones. That’s what killed my feet. Anyway, when I do the Camino again, I’ll probably be wearing some sort of super cushy Hokas, and I will be bringing a pair of Teva sandals as well.

I’m on the Litoral Portuguese right now and brought trail runners (Salomon XT-6). Sized up in them and everything. My feet are a total mess from blisters, whereas in regular life I rarely ever have to break in any shoes. Met lots of people here wearing Teva sandals who absolutely rave about them. So I got some trekking sandals today for myself (Teva-lookalikes). Make sure your shoes are really cushy (mine were not). I don’t know exactly what Camino you’re doing but even on the Litoral/Coastal there are pretty of cobblestones and they just wreck your feet.

I used to rock a pair of GTX trail runners from Solomon during walnut harvest... They stopped making them (boo), and I couldn't find any existing pairs that weren't stupid-overpriced. I went on a deep dive and tried every GTX model from Solomon, hoping for a replacement. They all fit differently. It was infuriating. So, a warning to all: Try all models of a given brand, because you can't rely on equivalent fit. I currently rock a pair of Altra lone peaks in blue for travel shoes, and they're the only shoes I've bought where I did not have to replace the insoles with my Soles. I was blown away.
