I would say that it depends on the case. In general, it is better for newborn babies to lie flat, so if you are planning on using your stroller for longer walks, it is better not to use the car seat for that. But if you will be using it primarily to go from your car to the store, that should be fine. But it is also worth checking if the convertible seat is really fully secure for newborns. Yes, they are rated for such and have inserts, but how tightly does it fit newborns and what angle is the baby positioned at? At least here in Germany, the typical advice is that infant carriers are safer than convertible seats for newborns. (But seats vary a lot by region, so this may not apply outside of Europe). As for me, I am in a different position this time (it's my fourth pregnancy), as we now live in a major city and don't own a car. I ended up getting the Nuna Pipa Next infant seat as it is very lightweight and therefore easy to move into a taxi, car-sharing car, or rental car on the rare occasions that we use them. We don't intend to use it with a stroller except perhaps on vacation. I did consider just starting with a convertible seat to save money, but decided against it.
Yeah, I live in a big city and also don't own a car, so I will likely barely use the seat. I bought a Nuna Pipa on sale from Babywalz for €135. I chose it because it has a relatively high weight range and my older kids were big when they were born. It is also doesn't weigh much so it is easy to use for car sharing. It was a model that was already discounted due to the color, I had a €10 gift card, and they were having a 15% off Nuna sale for one weekend only. According to their website, the exact same seat costs €220 at Zwergperten, but the German-speaking parenting internet would still view the decision to purchase the exact seat (**in advance, not after renting a seat first!**) for €85 cheaper as being terribly irresponsible. I mean, clearly the seats become magically less safe when purchased from an unapproved vendor. The proof that this happens is that the Fachhändler say so! And the Fachhändler couldn't possible be motivated by the profit that they make from convincing worried parents that they should buy their seats at inflated prices. They are purely performing a public service! And if it would actually common for infant seats not to fit full-term, normal-sized newborns, no seat on the market would be suitable, as a baby that is shorter/taller/slimmer/chubbier at birth could easily not be so after a couple of months, and then they could need a different seat a month later.
My wife and I use the Nuna Mixx next, the car seat has arms that attach to the two clips every rear seat has. Super simple to secure and remove and put onto the stroller. The normal stroller seat folds flat and coverts into a bassinet which is better than having to have a separate bassinet for the stroller. It’s designed for city use and meant to fold pretty flat when not used.
FTM 2w pp — I got the nuna pipa urban x2 + Demi next bundle and the nuna exec next. It’s pricey but I think it’s worth it. The bundle I got comes with 2 infant car seats that fit right into the travel stroller (single to double stroller as well) and the Demi seat can be used from birth to 50lbs. The travel size stroller is the biggest one they have, it’s one hand fold with bigger wheels and storage than most travel strollers, it also comes with a rider board too. The Demi seat can also recline back almost all the way which is why I decided not to get the bassinet attachment because I was debating on getting that as well. We have two cars as well and I know my family will want to take baby out as it gets warmer (also have a little niece on the way so our kids are gonna be like 2 months apart). Also, plan on ttc baby #2 around 18m pp when I get the okay from my OB. They have a bundle that comes with only one car seat as well. My lease on my car ends soon and once it does we were thinking of getting a bigger more permanent car which is when I’ll install the nuna exec next in there as it’s a convertible car seat that works from infant all the way to booster. I like both the seats because it’s baseless, so traveling with the infant car seat and the stroller has been super easy and convenient.
There’s a bundle that comes with one, I bought the one that comes with 2 because I have a niece on the way that would be 2 months younger than my daughter. With the stroller being able to convert to a double, family outings would be easier plus I plan on having one for my home and most likely will give one to my mom when my baby is old enough to do more outings. Based on past experience with my nephew everyone in my family ended up buying a car seat for their cars because we all took him for outings and it was just easier for them to have their own car seat. So I’m going off past experiences, this is just what I think would work better for my family. The nuna exec was not part of the bundle I bought that separately for when we have a more permanent car to avoid having to buy different car seats later on.
My parents have a Graco for their car and we have a Nuna in my husband’s car! We love both equally! The Nuna is “nicer” and if non-toxic materials are important to you, go with the Nuna. We have the Tavo stroller as well and the seat reclines fully and the footrest folds up to create a bassinet. We have never used a Graco stroller, but love our Nuna stroller! Getting ready for our second and we once again are going to be using the Nuna infant seat and purchasing a Rava when the time comes.
We use Nuna products. My husband works out of town about half the time, so honestly it’s nice that my Nuna collapses with 1 button, and is extremely light (car seat is 4lbs). Since a lot of time it is just me.
The pipa urbn /Nuna Trvl Lx combo is amazing. I have to walk down a flight of stairs and it works well. I like the Trvl LX because can be used from birth with a near flat recline, super early one hand fold, pretty light, and the wheels and frame are very strong handling not the best streets and sidewalks quite well. While I have a car, there have been times when I needed to take an uber and the urbn was perfect. It just plugs right into the latches. It was so much easier than doing a seat belt install each time. And while it is heavier than our pipa rx, it really wasn’t noticeable like I thought it would be. It felt the same with a 23lb baby in it as the RX. And when he was really little it was great.
I own a Nuna system. I'm going to be honest. It's not 2x or 3x as good as a Graco or evenflo system. We extremely overpaid for aspects that mostly other brands now offer. Same as any other luxury anything in any retail market ever. That's just how consumer goods work. $600 shoes are not 10 times as good as $60 shoes either. At the time, we chose it because I wanted the extra lightweight Nuna car seat & I also wanted a lightweight stroller & a bassinet that was usable separately for overnight sleep. (So we did not buy a bassinet) None of these things were priceless though. I certainly could have made a more efficient purchase. We didn't have to 🤷🏼♀️ It wasn't a very complicated decision-making process. The stroller we got absolutely sucked, so I can't even say it was a good decision making process. The car seat and the bassinet were great though, and I couldn't know I would hate the stroller until I used it.
We had the Pipa urbn and looooooved it. So easy and light. Twas a sad day when our daughter outgrew it.
She outgrew it around 11 mos.
