Agreed! Seeing a clear of O10s on an ultrawide youtube vid back in Stormblood was what convinced me to buy my current monitor [Acer X34P]. Couldn't go back to 16x9 now, the extra width is just too nice!
I’ve recently upgraded from a 34 inch ultrawide - Predator X34P - to a Predator X45. No regrets whatsoever and I also have a relatively small desk space. I can see what people mean about the PPI now I’ve got the monitor, but frankly if you’re sitting at the correct distance you don’t notice it, doubly so in gaming. Now I’ve tried a 45 I don’t think I could go back.
Keeping it for a couple of years? Do you really switch monitors that frequently? It’s fine if you do I just didn’t realize people did that. What do you do with all of the old monitors? I’m still running an Acer Predator X34P with a 5070 Ti and I doubt I’ll change until it dies.
I’m still happy with the Acer so I don’t plan on changing. It’s more important to me that the GPU can actually hit the 100fps of the monitor in games like Doom: The Dark Ages than it is to have HDR or OLED. I may update someday but the Acer will be fine for me until it dies most likely.
I had a 34” ultrawide for 5 years and switched to a 32” 4K OLED a week ago. Don’t get me wrong, I had a blast the past 5 years with it and I loved it, but I’m SO glad I left ultrawide behind. First: 32” 4K at arm’s length is so clear and sharp, it’s like a window into the games. And OLED on top of that is an unreal gaming experience (coming from an already great Predator X34P LCD). It’s the biggest upgrade I’ve ever experienced. And second: the downsides of ultrawide. • Curved: I can’t tell you enough how much curved monitors suck imo. Your brain gets used to it, which of course is fine… but every flat monitor you use after it will look like it’s bent to the back… 😁 no joke. • It’s a pain in the ass to adjust it correctly. Because it’s wider + curved, you need to adjust the monitor height almost perfectly to your eye level. If it’s too low, the taskbar will look bent like a rainbow, and if it’s too high, the upper part will look bent. + The objects in the curved area are displayed bigger. All that together will give you a lot of distortion. Last weeks with my ultrawide I got a lot of headaches because of all this sht. My 16:9 4K I just placed on my desk, adjusted the height one time, and it’s perfect. No problems, no distortion or sht. • There are still many games that won’t support ultrawide. Japanese ones especially, like FromSoft. There are mods like Flawless Widescreen, but it just sucks. And with modded Elden Ring (Nightreign) or Dark Souls, you can’t play online. Death Stranding was a weird one as well. It was like 20:9 aspect, so almost 21:9 but with tiny small bars on the side. Again, mods. Every time I played the game, I had to open the 21:9 fix mod after starting the game. So overall I am so f***ing happy I left 21:9 behind and switched to 16:9. Just playing and enjoying the games without any drawbacks. So I would say: go get 32”. Edit: And about performance concerns: In 4K you can even use DLSS Performance Mode (rendering at 1080p), and it still looks better than native 1440p. DLSS 4 in Quality Mode looks noticeably better than native 4K while rendering at 1440p. So this idea that 4K is too demanding – that belongs firmly in the past, thanks to DLSS 4 😉
Ultrawide slaps. I've still got my 2017 Acer Predator X34 (3440x1440 100Hz IPS) and it's lovely. Feels like you're playing a movie
Something to note there aren't really good 4k UW options.. IMHO the 34/49" (3440x1440/5120x1440) UWs are the sweet spot especially considering what GPU horsepower we have available to us at reasonable prices. DLSS/FSR4 (and FSR3 if you can deal with the artefacts/quality issues) are nearly mandatory at these resolutions to sustain a good frame rate (90-120fps or more) in AAA. Try to understand your personal target frame rate when choosing a monitor as well. I run an Alienware AW3423DWF and Acer X34P (pair of 3440x1440) with a 5800X3D and RTX4080. For most gaming (Dota, Indies) this setup is more than enough. For the big boy games (Cyperpunk, WH40K Darktide, Helldivers2, Wukong, BF6, etc) sometimes I want more GPU. My target for single player is 90+ min, 120+ ideal. With multiplayer being 120+ min, 160 ideal. I typically get that with some graphics options tuning (typically high, with some medium for intensive effects, like volumetric fog and shadows). RT is still a pipedream feature in most titles.. (6080 maybe¿)
