There are problems with scaling on 5K2K ultrawides and M4 processors. Here's a long thread: [https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/5k2k-at-120hz-with-mac-mini-m4.2441289](https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/5k2k-at-120hz-with-mac-mini-m4.2441289) I'm fussy about crispt text. Nothing beats a true 200+ PPI monitor at 2:1 scaling. My LG 34" 5k2k is only \*okay\* when set up for 1.5:1 scaling and AFAIK it's the highest PPI ultrawide. If you get a Dell, don't install their software.
No, it hasn't. I tested my LG 34BK95U 5K2K monitor in an Apple Store with the Macbook Air M4 with Tahoe 26.0.1, and 3840x1620 wasn't listed as a possible video resolution. I also tested my monitor with the Macbook Pro M5 (base model), and got the same result. The resolutions offered were 5120x2160, 3008x1269, and 2560x1080 (default), and lower resolutions.
Sure, I wrote out these rough instructions somewhere on that AMA. However, I will try and make them a bit clearer: 4,608 x 1920 is the target and looks perfect to me. To do this, you need to create a virtual display in BetterDisplay and associate it with the Dell, select "auto mirror" as the option (something named liked that, I'm at home so can't check 100% the term). Now under the virtual display (named at the top of the window) ensure you toggle "Use custom resolution list" and add the resolution noted above. The aspect ratio will probably show as 12:5 as well which is fine (the display is actually 24:10 not 21:9 as advertised!) Finally under the "Overview" section (not under a screen but the Overview option at the top of the window) ensure you have toggled under "Additional Settings" the option "Enable resolutions over 8K (4K HiDPI). This was the magic sauce I was missing when trying to make this work. That should now give you a crisp HiDPI resolution with plenty of vertical space.
It's frustrating that nearly every monitor is a trade off, this is the closest one to "perfect" I could find. The blacks are really good but won't be as good as the mini LED backlighting. I do agree the curve could be a bit more aggressive. But overall, for productivity, it's really amazing. The price is already dropping. I actually bought mine with a cheap laptop because by buying a laptop I got 20% off the screen, so overall a laptop and screen was £120 cheaper than just the screen lol. And then I sold the laptop brand new so overall I saved £400 on the ticket price. It still stung, but it was worth it overall.
I'm afraid I don't play games at all :( When I got this I did do an AMA over on the LTT sub-Reddit: [https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/1qhnywy/ama\_dells\_new\_u5226kw\_6k\_ultrawide\_mac\_and\_windows/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/1qhnywy/ama_dells_new_u5226kw_6k_ultrawide_mac_and_windows/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) I think some people on there had some experience and also the LTT review is worth a watch if you didn't see it though of course it's a paid review so not sure how much help it will be.
These are my instructions from my AMA thread, I hope they are clear when you have BetterDisplay in front of you, if not please let me know and I'll try and write them better! \----- 4,608 x 1920 is the target and looks perfect to me. It's an Amazon special: [https://amzn.eu/d/04fTJgoc](https://amzn.eu/d/04fTJgoc) I really like the lumbar support on it. I did find adding a neck pillow helped a lot though as the head rest doesn't sit forward far enough to support my head for my liking. The problem is with these chairs is once you've put them together, if they're not perfect, returning them is too much hassle. So I ordered this: [https://amzn.eu/d/0etpwfAc](https://amzn.eu/d/0etpwfAc) Overall I'm pretty happy with it for the price. One day I'll go nuts and order a Herman Miller chair or something but only if I can go and try it in person first 😅
As I understand it the Samsung has less vertical space, is that right? I think it was on my list of possibles but the vertical space sold me on the Dell. In the last year I've been through an embarrassing number of monitors trying to find "the golden choice", dual screen setups etc. I had a Studio Display which was great until it started making a horrible noise so it went back, then an LG UltraFine 5K which is an excellent display and made me wonder why I bothered with the Studio Display given second hand it was a quarter of the price, also tried an older MSI 5K2K 34" UltraWide which without a curve just didn't quite work for me. Oh and an LG 6K which was OK but the anti glare sheen drove me nuts so I sold that on. Dell released this just in time to save my sanity and even this was a pain getting working with a Mac and it nearly went back (took me hours to figure it out but got it perfect with BetterDisplay even though I can only run 60Hz until Apple get their s\*\*t together). I also have a Pro Display XDR but that's for focussed creative work using one app at a time, whereas the Dell is for everything else.
Ah that's right I remember the pronounced curve was really tempting as I like that cocoon feeling but the Dell is so massive it sort of has the same effect 😅 Apple are so weird with their displays, it's like they can hardly be bothered but when they do release them, they're pretty good. The Studio Display was really really nice but needed to be 32" really. The Pro Display XDR is in a class and price bracket of its own but I never used a screen that made me actually exclaim out loud when I tested it for the first time. If they released a range of glossy screened, nicely made monitors in different sizes I'm sure they'd all find customers. Also if M5 fixes things plus they release the Pros with OLED displays I might have to upgrade...
For some reason your link tells me I can't view the content in my region :( It's a shame you can't demo the Dell in person, the colours and blacks are incredibly impressive for IPS. Also have you seen the BenQ RD280U 3:2 monitor? I had one for a while and it was great for coding, but the Dell just has a tiny bit more vertical space too. Also had an impressive IPS display. That said I'm all for just traditional 4:3 screens. Sometimes they just work better :)
I don't like large ultrawide displays because their PPI is simply too low for macOS you need at least 200. At 40" you can literally see every pixel. I wish I'd never bought my cheap plastic LG 5K ultrawide and just spent the extra $250 for the Apple Studio.
I personally wouldn't. My LG ultrawide is 34" and I can see every pixel, whereas that Dell is even bigger so that comes to only 140 ppi and the way macOS does antialiasing not only will you literally see every pixel but they'll look even larger than mine. However, if you're not a creative making a living as a designer/retoucher etc and the large pixels don't bother you, then go for it. Although if possible I would at least recommended seeing it in person, preferably running off a Mac, so you can play with resolution and see if you can get it where you like it. At 40" you might be able to run it at native res with screen elements/type still being legible. Good luck!
Your 40” display’s pixels DO NOT and CANNOT change size when you “use the right scaling.” It’s the pixels per inch figure that matter, thats permanent. I am literally seeing every pixel right now on my LG 34” 5k2k ultra wide. Still usable to me, just not ideal, but At 40” no matter what scaling you use normal human eyes will easily see pixels at norm viewing distance while using your Mac. I’ve been a pro photo retoucher, designer, and Mac dork for 30 years. These aren’t opinions they’re facts. Facts don’t care about your feelings. I’m starting to feel like I’m arguing with a Trumper.
That’s the one I have.
I have an LG 34” ultrawide 5120x2160 60Hz display with my M3Pro MacBook Pro and it’s awesome. I’ve had it for over 5 years now. Worked great with my old M1, works great now. I’m primarily a photo and video editor.
It’s technically a 5K2K or “ultrawide 4K” true 5K would be 5120x2880 I tried 2 different 1440P displays based on others recommendations and found them horrible with really soft text and generally blurry images. The 5K2K looks like retina to me so I love it. 1440P just doesn’t scale well with Mac.
34" LG 5k2k on for 34,599 hours and still going strong!
I love my 34" LG 5k2k Ultrawide IPS display. The colors are great (I'm a pro photographer) and the display is not curved so no distortion. I also love that it connects to my MacBook Pro with a single Thunderbolt cable that charges the laptop, receives its video feed, and sends USB to they small hub built into the monitor. It's this one: LG 34BK95U-W UltraFine 34" 21:9 5K 2K (5120 x 2160) Nano IPS LED UltraWide Monitor, 600 cd/m² HDR, Thunderbolt 3 / USB Type-C Inputs Black https://a.co/d/78W2Zp8
I j got the 34” 5k2k from lg. rn it’s on sale for like 800 down from 1600 msrp. Fantastic monitor giving me enough space for my college work in finance but also my creative work in photo and video. Tbh I would go for this if you can afford it bc resolution and screen width
What will you be using it for? More work or gaming? I have [this 34” for work and it is amazing.](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1439939-REG/lg_34bk95u_w_34_hdmi_display_port.html) the colors are perfect and the text is crisp. If you want it curved they make [a 40” model.](https://www.bestbuy.com/product/lg-40-ips-led-curved-ultrawide-whud-71hz-monitor-with-hdr-hdmi-displayport-usb-silver-white/JJ8VPZSTX5/sku/10564353?sb_share_source=PDP&ref=app_pdp&loc=pdp_page)
I've been on a 5k2k resolution for 6 years now. LG already had a 5k2k non-oled before. I gamed with a 2060, a 3070Ti and now a 9700XT. All of them more than adequate depending on the game and how much detail you want on the screen. You can always knock down the resolution to another 21:9 ratio. The 5090 is best-in-class and so you'll be happy until a better GPU comes along.
