I ran into this last year adding a third screen to my mac setup. Honestly ultrawides are great for productivity with the extra horizontal space for coding windows. For mac compatibility through a dock i'd recommend the Dell U3423WE - it has usb-c power delivery and plays nice with displaylink. The LG 34WN780-B is another solid option that fits well in a triple monitor arrangement without overwhelming your desk.
i went through this last year with my own setup. honestly the size depends a lot on your desk depth - if you're under 30 inches deep, a 34-inch ultrawide is usually the sweet spot. if you've got more room, a 38 or 49 can be amazing but might feel too close. i ended up with the [LG 34WN80C-B](https://metadoraffi-eng.github.io/shopit?search_keywords_with_plus=LG+34WN80C-B) and it's been perfect for productivity. the curve helps with eye strain too after long days. just make sure to measure your space first.
That is a practical setup change, and I’ve been in the cramped-desk lane too. I’d keep your focus on a true ultrawide shape with good text size instead of forcing a 40-inch panel into a 48x30 space. For under $400, [LG 34WN80C 34-Inch Ultrawide Monitor](https://featherab.com/shopit?q=LG+34WN80C+34+Inch+Ultrawide+Monitor) is a strong baseline for split screens and coding tabs. AOC CU34G2X is a good backup if you want a bit more refresh without blowing the budget. On a Mac mini, 3440x1440 at sane scaling usually gives cleaner workspace density than a taller 1080p panel for side-by-side tools. I’d buy one unit first, test ergonomics and distance for a week, and only then confirm whether you still need a larger panel.
that budget is tough for 4k ultrawide over 45 inches - those usually run $1200+. the color issues youre seeing on the lg are probably calibration more than panel quality. grab a spyder or color munki to calibrate your current monitor first. for an upgrade, look at the gigabyte m34wq (34 inch 4k 144hz) around $500 or save for the dell u4025qw. honestly stacking a 34 above your 34 might be neck strain city. i tried two 32s stacked and ended up side by side instead.
For my M2 Mini Pro I use a LG 34WN80C-B UltraWide Monitor 34” 21:9 Curved WQHD (3440 x 1440) IPS Display, USB Type-C (60W PD), sRGB 99% Color Gamut, 3-Side Virtually Borderless Design, Tilt/Height Adjustable Stand - Black. The curve is subtle. It has a low refresh rate, however I do not game very much. For office WFH & casual daily use it has been excellent. No reliability issues so far. The LG settings interface is pretty trashy and I rarely touch it. YMMV. I purchased it in 2020 for $555. Amazon is now selling it for $780, which is about $80 above my price after adjusting for inflation. 🤷♂️
I’m happy i’ve changed my uw ips lg 34wn780-b on this alienware
As far as I’ve seen… I’ve been looking at 34” ultrawides since last year.. ips for ultrawide are being replaced by oled. My first ultrawide - lg 34wn80c-b, got it for 537. A 60hz ips 1800r ultrawide. It was nice but 60hz. Still many options for ips available. My portrait side monitor now. Second ultrawide - m34wq, I wanted higher hz so a 144hz IPs flat monitor at a low low price, much cheaper 380. It is an amazing monitor for the price. I noticed IPs monitor options was much lower during this time. It’s now the secondary top monitor. Third and hopefully last for a long time - aw3423dwf, the price was too good for the time at 700 and a week later went down to 600 and got the difference with a price match. Solid oled monitor and my main. I also checked other options and … notice even less ips options. I’ve been keeping an eye out on ips ultrawides and … they are going eol. The only new ips ultrawide that came out are the 40” 5k2k work monitors. The best priced m34wq went eol very quickly. It’s sad since it is such a low cost but solid ips monitor that would’ve increased ultrawide market share = even better support. IPs is being replaced by oled. That’s what I’m seeing this year. Well, lower end ultrawides are being replaced by dirt cheap Va. On the oled, anti burn in support is much better now. You should still follow good practices to make it even better.
I moved from LG 34WN780-B to LG 40U990A-W. This is a good alternative to Dell. This model does have kvm - i connected macbook pro m1 pro (100hz only) via TB and desktop pc via hdmi+usb c. When i switch inputs on monitor, usb devices reconnect to corresponding device. Now i have single wire to macbook vs earlier i must have power cord, dedicated usb-a hub for webcam and mx master receiver. One downside: i can hear fan noise.
I'm happy using a single LG 34" (3440x1440@60Hz). Enough room for 2 pages of A4 size and then some, or e.g. a PDF and some Ghostty splits. And also nice for movies. I usually use my apps in full screen mode. If I ever need more room there's still the possibility of opening the 16" MBP screen (but that happens rarely).
