I have the predecessor to that monitor (38WN95C-W) and love it. Happy to answer any questions. I keep thinking about upgrading but nothing really beats it in every category. For burn in you may want to have a look at Monitors Unboxed youtube. They have been doing a burn in test with an OLED. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbEgQrigiLc
Very similar usage as you were describing. I'm a Software Engineer, so lots of coding, lots of browsing, watching videos, reddit. Some gaming (nothing competitive). Also long sessions for music production. So various things that all have static UI elements for hours at a time all day long nearly every day. I am in the IPS camp for the same reason you are considering it. But to me the only things this IPS monitor loses out on compared to an OLED is the inky black and local dimming. But I just have lighting behind the monitor (bias lighting) that helps with the blacks and the local dimming is not something I even think about or notice. The 144hz refresh rate and 1ms response time is great for gaming and there is no text fringing you might see on an OLED. The resolution is ok/meh (108ppi). Some day I'd like to upgrade to 5k2k with 140ppi or higher. But there are no IPS out there currently with that resolution that also have as fast a refresh rate and response time. So for now I am happy with what I got. I'm curious what we'll see from CES this year. However I expect it might be another couple years before a true successor to this monitor comes out.
You're not crazy, the way people talk about OLED is very over the top. IPS are certainly useful for productivity. It seems for ***some*** folks OLED can be good for productivity, but it's not universal. Nothing wrong with you, it's just that the tradeoffs are not right for you. That said, there are two 40" 5k2k IPS ultrawides you might want to look at. Both use the same panel from LG * LG 40U990A-W (just released) * Dell U4025QW ([rtings link](https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/u4025qw)) I'm in a similar place where I have a 38" LG ultrawide (looks like same panel as your AW) and I love it. But i'd like to bump up a bit in size and resolution. However the main caveat with the above two monitors is the response time is somewhat poor. This could cause smearing in games. Mostly seems like it would not be super noticeable unless you are into competitive first person shooters. But it's a downside and it's one thing holding me back a bit. My current monitor has a 1ms gtg (advertised, about 5-8ms real). While the above two monitors have an 8ms gtg (advertised, and 15-25ms real world) I am holding out hope things will improve over the next few years but as of now I am in the exact same boat. I'd love an upgrade, but it just seems like every upgrade has at least one area where it would be a downgrade. This 38" LG panel was great in all the right places. It may not have silky blacks, but it's very good in all the places that matter to me. edit: potentially useful video comparison some guy did https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXvANNU8oD8
Bad timing, Samsung Australia just finished an EOFY sale including monitors. I have and like the lg 38wnc monitor. Great for productivity with some extra vertical height (1600px) and good for gaming with up to 144hz. Not oled good but still good. I was very tempted by the lg oled 45 with 5k2k res, but it’s expensive and not sure how it would be for productivity. If I didn’t care about gaming the dell 5k2k 40 inch looks great but it has slow response times, so not useful for gaming.
I currently have a 38WN95C. I think this is about the limit in size for me. It’s a good balance of more real estate / immersion without handicapping myself in games such as league where the map has to be in the corners. If the 39” also has the tandem OLED panel then it’s a no brainer for me.
OLED: Not currently. I did get one of LG's woefully under-rated 38BN95C-W monitors on sale for $850 a while back (3840x1600, 144hz nano IPS). About as close as you will get currently. Not perfect, but i dont ever remember that when i'm playing games on it. The picture is brilliant, and the size/curve is amazing. The adjustable curve model is about the only replacement i'd accept over it now. Tried to like the ultragear 3440x1440 OLED model in the same size but the pixel density was noticeable to me.
Thanks. In that case, yeah 800R for productivity is fine. I’m on Excel all day and it’s not an issue.
Do you not have the 38” 1600p 2300R monitor available? 38WN95C. I have it and love it. A Dual4K super ultra wide would be the only upgrade I could see in the future, once graphics cards can drive that many pixels reliably in games, or the monitor supports dual mode with maybe Dual1440p mode.
Yeah, I have [38” QHD+ Nano IPS Curved UltraWide™ Monitor | 38BN95C-W | LG Business Solutions](https://solutions.lg.com/us/computer-monitors/lg-38bn95c-w). I bought this like 5 years ago, though. There are more and better options now for probably less than I spent on this. I think it was $1,500 in 2021. If I were buying today, I'd probably look at the 5k2k widescreen options or go back to dual monitors. But I do dev work and gaming on one monitor, so I have some different considerations than you. Mine is only 38" wide so the curve doesn't matter so much. It has a small curve but I would be fine with no curve. I would not want an extreme curve like the 49" Samsung displays. I can fit two windows side by side comfortably. Sometimes I wish I had more vertical space for more lines of code to display at once without scrolling.
This monitor has my attention...wishing it have 1800R (or 2300R) curve and it would be instant buy for me. When it comes to 1500R I am not convinced that much...of course it is far batter that 800R but currently I am using 38" (LG38WN95CP) monitor with 2300R curve and it is very ok for me and I don't have feeling that I need more bended panel.
