Lg 40U990-A. Ive made a comment on both devices at another post
Na its just the fan noise of the LG which made it unusuable
I have the LG 40U990A-W. No fan noise for me. I want to buy a second one and daisy chain it to screen nirvana.
Running a MacBook Pro, no discernible fan noise. I was pleasantly surprised after reading the reviews and taking the ‘risk’. Also applied the LG firmware update.
Ok, great question, still have some parts left out though. Is the price of a single 5k2k nano IPS black your budget? How premium is your desk space? Can you go vertical, like having stacked 21:9 or even 32:9 at the top? I am software developer too, I have been fiddling with monitors for last few years. What I find is that, unless you NEED to play FPS, 120hz is generally enough for most games. Under that bracket, there are many options from the office space side. I guess that is why you are looking at that DELL monitor. You have few options here, you can have a single 40" 21:9 to consolidate, but the screen real estate won't be enough, you will need another monitor on top for better reference document look up. 2 monitors is ok, you just need 1 monitor capable of KVM, and the other can just be a display. What I do everyday is manually switch input sources, this is cheapest and easiest option compared dedicated KVM solutions. Or you can go for the new 52 inch VA panel DELL ultrasharp, though it is probably too massive.... If you want great visual upgrades, OLED is out of question due to programming is static content all day everyday, so there is only Miniled realistically, and there aren't alot options right now. So this can still go alot of ways depending on your situation. If you don't mind spending abit more, maybe go for the DELL one, and use your current 27" as the top monitor, and just buy a vertical rack, would be the best option. I would advise the DELL monitor, because most LG options I have tried have some integration issues with different OS. Generally the user experience is trickier than DELL. You just don't get much support for a premium price tag.
For desk space, another solution could be this, https://a.co/d/0906mVg Amazon link. I came from having two Neo G9 57" stacked, the miniled VA looks better than normal backlight IPS screens and OLED. But stick with IPS since the normal VA looks horrid indeed. I ran into the same issue of having too much things to look at, I realise the sweet spot is around 3 areas of which you look at. Ultrawide consolidate 2 areas, so you will need that one screen from laptop or another monitor. Right now, I saw someone who ranked productivity monitors which puts the Dell one you are looking at at rank 1, followed by OLED 45" 5k2k, followed by neo G9 57". So you are pretty much looking at the only option on the market for a none OLED monitor that is not massive. I think these 3 monitors are probably the only options worth considering at the moment. Other options I have looked at, either trades off text clarity, or refresh rate or user experience like OLED. For working off center, my old 57" was not too bad, since I find having 2 32" 16:9 equivalent of space at eye leve, it does make you work off center, but you can go main window in center and reference doc on the left and AI chat on the right. The 40" will have less space, so having coding window with AI chat, and browser window will feel cramped. And it still does make you look off center as well if you keep them side by side like the traditional 50:50 split, I think that problem can only be solved with more screen real estate, or you have to juggle the screens around using virtual desktops. One negative having ultrawide is that screen share becomes a challenge, that's why I advised 27" at the top. It does make reading off the browser easier when you are on your PC. It can also serves as a tv when you are gaming full screen. Oh and Miniled VA looks sharper than IPS at the same PPI, which was very surprising. So if you want to wait, there might be more Miniled options coming. Otherwise the Dell 40" is a solid option at the moment, just abit pricy.
I have the 40U990A. If you have Mac’s go with that one for the thunderbolt 5. Initially I didn’t see much of a difference between my 38, but after some time, it’s definitely an upgrade. The text is much sharper. It’s a good monitor.
FYI eye strain returned and packed the 45 to be sent back. Unpacked the 40u990, except it being white, I have zero problems
That monitor is almost perfect. I really want a new IPS that is around 40" for 90% productivity and the rest gaming (couple of hours a week). The 5ms response time puts me off that when I do play BF6 for example, it will be annoyingly noticeably slow
You mean the LG U990A-W? It's the same panel. Just slight differences in connectivity.
I run that for gaming and the Dell for work. I don't wanna mess with OLED for my all day work monitor.
Also a coder here who recently purchased the GX9. I came from 27 + 34 IPS monitors (both @ 1440P) and while the GX9 indeed blows IPS monitors out of water when it comes to vibrancy and gaming immersion, text clarity is just lacking - my eyes feel so strained looking at fuzzy texts, which never happened with the IPS panels. If you are sensitive like me, you would have to go for the 40U990A, which based on the Dell U4025QW (same panel) would be nowhere near as good in both colors and motion handling (the Dell one is really slow per Rtings). I'm also about to place an order for the 40U990A and return the GX9 after evaluating both side-by-side.
