My Dyson V7 that I’ve owned for 5 years is pretty great. It was like $300 5 years ago and after spending $100 to replace the battery 1 time it still works phenomenally. If it ever really breaks I’ll absolutely buy another Dyson.

Yes, being cordless and effective for what I need. They have HEPA filters, at least mine does. The no bag is a feature for some of us not a defect. It's all a tradeoff. For some the tradeoff for cordless, no bags, good suction, etal means we vacuum more than we otherwise would. I dont make a mess emptying it vs making a mess swapping bags - cause I overfill it. That's a me thing but it's a consistent me thing and I dont have to worry about it with the Dyson. I never would have thought I'd defend a near $1,000 cordless vacuum but I got one as a gift and will never buy anything different now.

Have an older upright Dyson bag less vacuum, over 15 years old and it’s good. Bought a stick vacuum a couple of years ago for quick cleaning like after kids have demolished snacks, for the car etc and it’s been awful. Barely has any power compared to the proper vacuum, charge doesn’t last long, battery died last year and I had to go in to a store to get it replaced (at charge) then got home and after one use it stopped again. Turns out it was the power adapter/cord that was stuffed, and the back and forth to get them to just post me a new cord was stupid.

Damn, I love you for this. Nerd out my friend! I just bought a Dyson V10 Animal to replace my Dyson V7 that was gifted to me refurbished 3-4 years ago. The tech in the V10 for long hair is AMAZING. No more having to physically cut hair and cat fur off of the brush every month. I tried to fix the V7: replaced the filters and the battery. But it was literally just pushing around debris on the floor. The V10 had a $100 rebate off and I broke, using some Christmas gift money to buy it. I regret nothing, but will take better maintenance care of this one to keep it for life.

We've a Henry pet that does wonders for pet hair on the carpet areas and would definitely get another but the thing just goes and as others have said they hold up to abuse from kids aswell We got a 2nd hand Dyson cordless on cheap a few yrs back - it's grand for a daily clean up on wooden floors - I wouldn't recommend one though if u have pets as it barely does anything on the carpets and I wouldn't go near them at the prices in the shops though.

I have had good luck with Dyson and Shark brands. Both in “pet” models, I’m sorry I don’t know more specific models. I personally don’t notice much of a difference in the performance so I stick with Shark since it’s cheaper and in my opinion the hose and attachments are easier to use.

same here for the Shark Plug in model. the amount of dog hair / ETC it can get out of the carpet vs the Dyson Cordless cannot be compared. For purely hard wood / laminate (or very little rug or carpet) Dyson cordless stick vac is IMO is plenty. Good enough run time, and not heavy or unwieldy.

Call me crazy but my Dyson is still super strong after 4 years. Once the “beater bar” stopped working in mine, called Dyson and they told me to bring it to the Dyson repair place down the street. They gave me a whole new vacuum after 10 mins because they didn’t have a matching color brush head and didn’t want to send me home with a purple and yellow vacuum. When my cordless Dyson stopped working they did the same thing. I’m pretty lucky having an actual Dyson store down the street so I’m sure my experience is better than most, but they have taken care of me.

I wish I'd bought a Shark instead of a Dyson cordless. I have to empty the Dyson after vacuuming a single area rug, and if I use it when it's a tiny bit too full, it regurgitates a bunch of debris. It doesn't have great suction at the best of times, regardless.

The sharks are half the price at least and have nearly equal weight profiles as Dyson. Dyson warranties on cordless are just as garbage as everyone else's. Really need to talk to vacuum specialists that take care of vacuums and do maintenance for years. Not reddit consumers who never clean the filters, brushes, or tracks not to mention reviewing vacuums that have only been around for a few years

I've had my cordless Dyson for 5 years now. I can never go back. You just need to make sure you take it apart and thoroughly clean it every 6-8 months depending on use. The ease of vacuuming with it makes me despise cord vacuums. I can never go back. Imagine trying to water your plants around your entire house with a hose versus a squirt gun that put out like a hose.

I had a cordless Dyson vacuum and I loved it. Someday I might buy another one. The reason I had to get rid of my previous one was not because it broke, but because the filters were no longer available for it on the Dyson website. They sell compatible filters on Amazon, but if you read the reviews, people are saying they are fake and don’t work at all, so I didn’t bother. So my suggestion to you is if you buy a Dyson vacuum, buy maybe four or five filters so that you will be able to use it for years to come. I ended up buying a Hoover vacuum and immediately regretted it because it’s very heavy and tires out my wrist and arm as I use it. Impossible to use on the stairs.

I've always had a great experience with my Dyson. It's one of the Animal vacs, and never fails to tackle my husky hair, and cleaning it out has always been a breeze. Only one part really needs to be replaced, because of an unfortunate tumble down the stairs that broke the latch portion that pops open the bottom of the canister, but I've been opening it manually for a year now. I guess I'm fortunate based on what other reviewers have experienced, but I've certainly got my almost 10 years out of it. I'd love to get a Miele in the future, and really I'm just torture testing this Dyson. It's already survived 7 cross country moves in my truckbed without a tarp, a couple times in the rain. I wouldn't absolutely not do that to a Miele though hahah!

I’m sorry, the cordless Dyson isn’t that great for carpet/rugs so I wouldn’t rank it that high. The attachments are excellent for their specific uses like couch/mattress, the nozzle for corners but I have the old school Dyson Ball vacuum cleaner and it’s sooo much better for rugs. Vacuum’s with cords for the win!

I have three dogs and have bought numerous vacuums trying to find the right fit. The best one for us has been a Samsung Bespoke Jet that has an all in one station. It is cordless and empties itself into a bag. Keeps all the dust and dander down. It is easy to use and I use it almost every day. I also have a Dyson animal but only pull that out about once a month - if even that. I love my Samsung. Wish it had a light on the head unit - but my Dyson doesn’t have a light either. The samsung was pricy but it is by far my favorite.

I had a Dyson "stick" type vacuum. It didn't last nearly as long as the price tag suggested it should. The out of warranty repair cost was 75% of what a new one would cost so I chucked it. I replaced it with a **Hoover ONE PWR** at half the price of the Dyson. I've had it longer than I had the Dyson and it's still working great. It comes with 2 batteries so one lives on the charger, the other on the vacuum. Means I've always got a full charge. The Dyson battery was internal so you can't swap out a battery if it dies on you. I would avoid anything that's not a brand name. Before the Dyson there was a generic Amazon no-name special vacuum that I used once, packed it back up in the box, and sent it back. Absolute junk. Bad suction. Just bad all around. Some of them may be fine but I don't trust the Amazon reviews on the no-name ones. They have a "Fieety" brand stick vacuum for $159 with nearly 1000 reviews averaging 4.6 stars. Is it good? You'd think so. But I still wouldn't take a chance on it. Ironically, the vacuum I bought and have had nothing but good luck with has a very low rating on Amazon (only 3 reviews though), but it doesn't matter as it's no longer available since it's such an old model.

I work in shops, and Dyson cordless vacuums are revered. Need to vacuum up sawdust and aluminum chips and plastic shavings and metal filings? The Dyson will do it. Sharks and similar seem to break in a month or two. The power tool branded vacs are tougher but don’t work as well. The only downside is the batteries, but you can buy a DeWalt or Milwaukee adapter and never worry about it again.

I can't recommend one, but I can say that my Dyson stick vac, besides not sucking well, makes an insanely loud screaming sound, whereas the Miele C3 I just bought to use instead, is much quieter, particularly on the lower settings (where it still creates more suction than the Dyson). Oh and it filters the exhaust air better. Something to consider with a baby..

I have a Dyson cordless (v7 I think bought on sale last year). I have arthritis so hand strength is a bit of an issue and I really like it for this reason - it's light and easy to manoeuvre. We have a large 2 bedroom apartment and can do half of it before the battery dies and needs to be charged - I guess it depends on you whether that's an issue or not. We just work within that limitation, eg do the kitchen, living, bathroom then put it back on the charge, Carry on with other cleaning (bathrooms, kitchen etc) then finish off the vacuuming once it's charged again. It's really not that big a deal, pretty sure you can buy an extra battery though if it is a problem for you. I was also looking at a Miele cordless version at the time which I think had a better battery but was a fair bit more expensive. From what I was looking at at the time the dyson v7 came out on top with a cost versus quality calculation.

My Miele corded vacuum has lasted for over almost 15 years. Some of the attachments look worn down, but they still work very well. I also have a Roomba and a Dyson cordless vacuum, but I don’t feel like it’s a fair comparison, since battery packs degrade over time. I’ve had to replace the battery pack for the Dyson, and my Roomba seems like it runs out of juice noticeably faster than before.

I did not have reddit before buying a dyson but signed up just to warn others. It's a beautiful machine.... that works for a year and then breaks (at least the cordless one) But what makes it worse is for a "premium product" the customer service is up there in the worst I have received. My vacuum broke a month ago (it's only a year old and still under 'warrenty'). \- I have been 30 days without a vacuum (it will probably be 45-60 by the time it's sorted) \- I have spent over 6-8 hours with customer service PS. I reached out on every other channel to give them an opportunity to rectify/ sort this out and they wouldn't do anything about it. Which is why I am here warning everyone else haha I would only every by one again at Costco where you can return it right away. I bought directly from dyson and there is no honor or care for customers when working directly with them .

We have Dyson, Miele and Henry. Dyson cordless is the best for daily convenience but not so good for a deep clean and it's quite high maintenance with all the charging, emptying, filter washing, getting hair off the brushes etc. Miele is solid and the suction is bonkers but I wouldn't use it for building work etc as I want to keep it nice. Henry is the work horse for cleaning the log burner, mud, brick, sick. You can chuck anything at him but he falls over a lot.

I really have liked my dysons. I bought first one in 2008 (I had just got a second husky) and I just got rid of it last year. For the past 8 years, I used to like a shop vac of sorts in my basement (lots of fur). I’ve had one since then, still running well, it’s probably 10 years old. It’s in my new house in the basement for the carpet, and I have Dyson stick for main floor (hard floors).

When we bought a multi level house and had pets and small children around we wanted to "upgrade" as well. Any with a Dyson stick as they seemed to be good. We loved the portability over the old hover and thought it was great. After a few years it started to show the truth. Crumbs would fall back down the tube. Multiple passes over items would still leave them on the ground. We when went as far a getting the old Hoover back out and realized just how much the Dyson missed. That lead me down the rabbit hole of what is actually good. Ended up with Miele, it's remarkable how well it performs.

I love my Dyson v15. I have a long haired cat and often I end up vacuuming after her twice a day. It’s just easier running around with a cordless, and it picks up so much hair. I had a v7 before this one and when I upgraded I vacuumed with the 7 and then the 15 just to see the difference. Couldn’t believe how much extra hair the 15 picked up. I did have an issue with the submarine head but they sent me a new one with no fuss.

Kjøpte Dyson for 4 år siden.

I feel like there aren’t any bifl stick vacs because bags wouldn’t really be practical, and the better manufacturers know that bagless vacs generally don’t clean as well. FWIW, I have a sebo canister vac for intermittent deep cleans — the thing is crazy powerful, and *will* probably last forever — and a Dyson stick that I use for daily pet hair duty. The Dyson is kind of a joke next to the sebo, but the ease of getting it around the house makes it my go-to for quick cleanups. (The batteries do need to be replaced once in awhile.)

I've previously had a Shark Upright and now have a Dyson Stick. I think both are fine. Honestly the biggest thing that made me go with Dyson over Shark for my current vacuum is being able to maintain my vacuum. When looking online and in store it was hard to tell how I would clean the regular floor head myself with the Shark, while the Dyson is incredibly simple. Even the filter on the Dyson is washable, I don't have to replace any disposable parts all the time. If I can't maintain and clean my own cleaning tools they're doomed to be replaced sooner.

> The anti-Dyson sentiment in places like a vacuum sub always feels like sock puppets shooting them down to promote their own brand or people just being opposed to what is popular. This and "enthusiests" in any given segment will be willing to give up convenience and performance. They always miss the entire point of a dyson, which is completely convenience. I don't want to lug around a bagged vacuum, I don't want to have to plug it in, dyson retains the build & performance but makes it cordless and quiet.

Yeah I worked as a vacuum tech for years and sold Miele, Sebo and Dysons, But Mieles were in for repair probably the most. All the service techs including me hated them. Way over priced and a royal pain to work on/get parts. The Dyson cordless that that I’ve owned for six years now has worked flawlessly and still gets 40 minutes on charge easily. And also for all the Dysons I’ve recommended to people through the years have all worked amazing. Dyson blows the competition away when it comes to innovation, and the overall product experience, especially the cordless game. Will never go back from Dyson. I do really like Sebo! Just expensive and hate bags/low portability.

I didn't think so, but I've only used their stick vacuum. It had issues, and when I was in the market for a new vacuum 5-6 years ago I had a couple of friends and also a couple of local vacuum shops recommending I avoid Dyson. I decided to go with a Mielle canister instead. I have two huskies and it does a great job with all surfaces. The canister is very light and not clunky at all to pull around (which was my biggest worry). I'd recommend checking this brand out if you're unsure about Dyson.

The problem is not that the battery runs out during normal use, it's that EVERY SINGLE TIME you use max suction mode, it shortens the life of the battery. The user manual might say to only use max suction mode in short bursts, but it still doesn't change the fact that max suction mode is so bad for the battery that it shouldn't even be an option.

I can say the Miele C1,2, and 3 bags or like $45 for the XL ones and it’s 8 bags or for you, a year supply. though you might only go through 5-6 cause they do compact the dust pretty well. And it comes with 2 pre motor filters and 2 post motor filters. So you get to change it’s primary filter every time you change bags, the pre motor filter which is what keeps the motor clean and running for a long time every 4 bags and the post motor filter which is the the last stand filter for anything that might have made it through every 4 bags. Also air flowing through a MERV 13 filter several times is the equivalent to a hepa filter cause they filter the same .3 micron particles and hepa filters 99% and MERV 13 filters 75-85%. So this would be close if not better than “hospital grade filtration.” And if you must they sell a hepa grade post motor filter as well for most models. So bagged would be great for your needs, and for an extra $45 you get a machine that will last at least twice if not up to four times as long as any baggless vacuum. I also own a Dyson stick for the past 2 years and my dad owns a Dyson animal ball for the past 15 years and they work pretty darn well. Shark might not last as long but the don’t leak dust either and is cheaper from what I’ve seen so its also is a viable option. Best of luck!!

Dyson Animal stick vacuum. Husband took over the vacuuming in retirement, and he loves it more than my Dyson upright with all the tools. Has replaced the rechargeable battery, said it was just pop in, easy. Note: animal and people hair can twist around the beater bar, so watch that and keep it clean. Take the whole thing out of the head. Get the hair hidden in the gaskets. [ I only say thus because I assist at a senior center thrift shop, and someone was donating it. I pointed out that the filter and head needed cleaning and it would work. Thank the goddesses that he challenged me. I told him I would fix it for $25 donation to the center. He went for it. I had it running in 5 minutes. Don't throw away vacuums until you have cleaned it! ]

I've always found them to be hype. Used to have a Dyson corded that I got from my dad second hand. it was good, until I decided to replace it with a Shark corded. The first time I used the shark, you'd have thought I'd never hoovered the carpet, honestly the amount of engrained hair and dust it pulled out was insane in comparison to the Dyson which looked like it was doing a good job, it's not that it didn't pick anything up but I would say the recovery rate was probably 65% in comparison to the shark. I then bought the shark stick handheld and was using that but when I split with my ex it stayed at the house. My new partner has a Dyson V8 and it's crap in comparison, there is stuff I know my shark would of picked up easily and the Dyson struggles. I also have a V7 my dad gave me which I just replaced the battery on as that had got to the point where it would only run for 30seconds before switching off so will see how it is with the new battery but tbh don't hold high hopes.

The v15 is a powerhouse. I use a v7 for my hard floors and low pile carpet. I finish up the carpet with a hoover powerdash pet and I finish up the hard floors with a hoover floor mate deluxe. I use either of my dyson for dusting surfaces, then I come back with a microfiber or swiffer.

I have two cats and a small dog and I really do love my Dyson V7. I have non carpeted floors everywhere in my apartment and while it gets the job done on my rugs I could see if I had entire rooms that were carpeted it could be a bit fussy. But as someone who wants to be able to just whip something out real quick to clean up coffee grounds I spilled or do a once around the house to get things slightly less covered in fur before company comes over I think it’s great.

We have a Dyson Animal and a Shark Canister style vacuum. We prefer the Shark. Suction is just as good as the Dyson and it’s infinitely more user friendly as far as the attachments and hose cleaning goes. Plus smaller head fits more places like under the bed. The Shark is just a better design.

I’ve had three Dyson Animal Stick vacuums that I liked enough to replace (refurbs each time) but I’d never depend on them as my only vacuum. Good for quick pickups. Bought a refurb Shark Rocket (with the plug) for a small cabin and I actually prefer it to the Dyson—especially LED lights on the head.

I also have pets and got a Miele C1 Cat and Dog. The suction is fantastic, but due to the fur tumbleweeds and tracked in dirt, I vacuum every other day or so. For that I find myself reaching for my backup Dyson stick - the canister is just too much of a pain for a quickie rug pass. Miele is the weekly “CLEAN ALL THE THINGS” tool. So if you are a chronic vaccunmer, I’d suggest either getting a Miele (or comparable) stick vac, or if you go canister, get a cheap backup for quickie fur jobs.

I got an older cordless dyson for free and thought i hit the jackpot. charged it and it only ran for 30 seconds. no problem just bought a new battery for $30. ran pretty well until the brush stopped turning 2 months later. cleaned it, completely disassembled it and nothing. my parents had a kenmore bag canister they didn’t want. i kid you not my carpet changed color. i had no idea how much gunk was missed by my dyson. and the canister came with a bunch of different brushes and accessories and different floor settings. i will never use a cordless stick vac again no matter how much people rave about the dyson. they die pretty quickly and aren’t as durable and multipurpose.

Dyson isn't what they used to be. I use one of their sticks at work. It was great initially but I've been watching it literally fall apart over the last few years (first the dust canister kept coming apart, then one of the wheels fell off, then the button that holds the stick in fell off). It gets a little abused, but it's not exactly tossed around. The suction is good. Everything else leaves something to be desired. Your money is probably better spent elsewhere.

4 years for a vacuum is terrible value for money ae. Expectations are so low these days for product longevity. Dyson are supposed to be the most premium vacuum, and it lasts about a year before it starts going down hill. After that you have to buy cheap Chinese battery adapter's to even use them. The filters are impossible to wash, and suction is below average.

There’s no single vac that does it all except for maybe a super heavy super expensive traditional canister like a Miele. For an everyday hard floor vac (and light carpet vac) the best is Levoit on Amazon that's about $200. It's a Dyson-like machine that overcomes a lot of the longtime design issues with Dysons (such as, it can stand up by itself -- what a concept). But we also keep the Dyson around for a more aggressive carpet vac when we need it. We also have a Eureka boss -- powerful and dependable small canister vac. And a monster shop vac in the basement. Dysons are great but they're really expensive and their air filtering system is overly complicated and tends to lose efficiency. If you own a Dyson, watch all the available Youtubes on how to clean it with pressurized air so you can keep it running. Given the competition from newer manufacturers like Levoit, I think it's going to be harder for Dyson to justify selling floor vacs for close to $1000.

My experience with Dyson stick. Worked ok first time. Next time wouldn’t work on high, cleaned it out, washed filter, let it dry 24 hours. Next day, won’t work oh high, barely works on medium, low is worthless. Cleaned again, washed filter, let it dry 24 hours. Next time high won’t work, medium pulses and barely sucks. So basically I vacuum carpet, litter gets pushed around room, when I turn off vacuum everything it has collected falls onto floor and I vacuum it up with a hand held ryobi. In researching Dyson problems, best advice on how to fix a Dyson was to throw it out and get something else. Good luck.

Yes, but you need to remember to always return it to the charger, otherwise it will be dead all the time & frustrating when you want to use it. The nice thing about Dysons, too, is a new battery is extremely affordable, so if the battery dies, you can replace it for under $40. I’ve had my Dyson cordless for 6 years, & I had to replace the battery once. I use mine daily. It’s been one of my favorite household “investments”.

I had a Dyson Animal and hated it. One, the ball makes it difficult to get under furniture. Next, the extension hose is not user friendly and hard to use in tight places. Then, I got tired of emptying the canister every time. Finally, the filters pick up the dander smell and need regular cleaning and replacing. We currently use an Orexk xl. Love it. It use an easy to change bag. I replace it about 1x per month and toss, so no lingering dander smell. Also bought the smaller should vac to use to get under furniture, nooks a cranies. Carry it on the should makes it easy to use.

I think you have had some trauma from older vacuums regarding batteries. Modern vacuums will last double that without losing too much power. It is no different than laptops. Those batteries used to die or be useless in 3-4 years but these days 5-6 is easily achieved, same for phones, and vacuums aren't discharged and recharged nearly as often. To illustrate, my 4 year old Philips vacuum has lost 0 of its charging capabilities. And while I agree that Dyson has good suction, they are reliability nightmares. I had two. I replaced the first after 3 years because it just stopped performing and no amount of cleaning did anything to change that. The second developed the same issues in about 2 years. I managed to convince support to send me a new motor but by then I was so pissed off with the brand (expensive and unreliable are a hateful combo) that I will never buy Dyson again (much of their stuff looks fancy but are outright scams). My Philips 8000 is as mentioned 4 years old and it has lost some of its suction power but will run about 40 minutes on a charge, same as when I bought it. Not super enthusiastic about the suction performance going down in 4 years but it has been better in pretty much every way compared to the Dyson (which refused to hoover up any of the cat litter on the floor eventhough it had much better suction, and it was FAR quieter too). Never again Dyson. Look up Dyson and Scam on Youtube and watch a few vids before you buy anything.

Go to Walmart and buy the Hart $100 stick vacuum. I have had 2 dysons and while they're nice the batteries are trash. I have tried factory and cheap replacements, and not much difference. Bought a cheap Walmart one for the garage and it worked great. Battery lasts forever. It works so well that the Dyson has gone to garage and the hart stays in the house. I've had it for 3 years now, still original battery working just fine. I'd get a year tops out of a Dyson battery. Dyson wins the looks award, but Hart beats it in performance.

I also have a really nice almost new Kirby ($800+ price tag) I picked up for $10 at a garage sale because the people didn’t understand you could replace the belts for a couple dollars. I use the Dyson all the time because it’s so much easier and less mental commitment for my ADHD brain to pick up and use a cordless vacuum whenever I need it. I can vacuum for three seconds and put it back before I get distracted. Easily worth the money because now I actually vacuum as opposed to getting stressed out about the whole process of plugging in, lifting, storing the giant Kirby and not vacuuming at all in the end.

Personal opinion, I ask my clients to provide a solid, efficient working vacuum. All of my clients have one except for one and I bring my company vacuum. They are charged a nominal maintenance fee because it’s time consuming to clean a vacuum and care for it. It’s not good to have a community vacuum and definitely dicey if they aren’t the cleanest people. I’ve got one client who has a severe allergy to pet dander and others who have multiple dogs. Nobody has a shared anything and my clients appreciate that. Personal opinion aside, because I use many vacuums I’ve been fortunate enough to figure out which ones are great and which ones are terrible. A lot of it is just personal preference however, Shark is still the leader for me. They have some pretty great vacuums, equally great attachments and are really easy to maintain and care for. I don’t care for the cordless models but the Shark Rocket corded model is one that I use for clients if they need a vacuum. My own personal vacuum is a Shark Navigator. I just keep going back to it because it’s so good. Dyson is decent but heavy. The Dyson Animal works well but it’s super bulky and difficult to carry up stairs. They make a cordless model that has a great battery life on one - that version is 4 or 5 years old and is FAR better than their newest model that has the green light bar on the head of the vac. Max 45 minutes run time so you’ve got to be real careful about when and how long you use it without having to charge it again. A lot of the cordless models also have the charging stations so you’ll have to buy multiple batteries if you travel with it. If you’re going to invest in a vacuum though, Miele is a terrific brand. Not talked about enough but it’s by far the Porsche of vacuums. It is the lightest vacuum I have ever used. The suction is adjustable, it’s ridiculously quiet and they last forever! It’s a canister vac and can be difficult to get used to BUT…I’ve never used a better vacuum. There are a few cleaners in here who use the Sebo backpack vacuums and I know they ride real hard for them! I’m sure one of them will show up soon 😂 Other frontrunners are Bissell. The Clearview is lightweight, easy to use and has great attachments. Comes in a bagged version as well. Hoover has come back into the game recently and they have a pretty stellar vacuum that is comparable to the Shark Navigator. I avoid water vacuums at all costs. Just not practical. I’m sure this is far too much to now think about but now you know 😎

I've had or have all 3 (well a V7 instead of a V8/V9) Tineco: It cleaned ok but you have to service the pre motor filter after every use. And really flimsy. The battery catch broke on normal use, I returned it after a month or so and got a V15 instead on sale. V8 vs V15: Get the V8 if you are stuck between the two. I've had less issues (maintenance) and it is seemingly the same power when you run it on max mode. Which is what you gotta do with either to effectively clean carpets. Still have the v7 but the handle cracked (DIY repair) & I had to convert it to run on dewalt drill batteries as the factory battery died. But... Like the general consensus around here is going to be, look at Miele, Sebo, or Lindhaus if you really want a machine that will clean your floors. Yes they have bags, but that is a good thing. The cord thing admittedly isn't fun to deal with. The "bags cause suction loss" is nothing but a Dyson marketing ploy. Maybe 20 years ago before bag tech improved. Now they only lose suction when completely full. Trust me (and most on here..) on this, the bags are a ton less maintenance than bagless models, and you aren't exposing yourself to all the dirt and dust when you dump it. You gotta dump the bagless when it gets about half full, or you'll really have fun cleaning the machine out. For instance, my house would take 4-5 dumps per each floor cleaning (1700 sq ft or 160 m2), but get about a month out of a bag doing the whole house (3400 sq ft/ 320m2)

Lots to unpack there, gonna try to keep it short. Miele's have the (or one of the) most expensive bags/filters. If recurring costs are a consideration, look at Sebo and Lindhaus units too. Get the powered brush roller, then wait and see on extra accessories if you actually need them. Bags: Generally speaking a box a bags will last you \~ 1 year Any bagless machine is going to have lots of maintenance, or a very short lifespan... None of them are going to perform well on low/medium settings for carpet. In my limited experience with them, Dyson's don't clog the filters often, but the cyclones can get stinky (pet stink), and they are almost impossible to clean out (gotta disassemble, you'd better be very well versed in technical matters and have the right tools). After my Dyson experiences I would consider either the LG L9, or possibly the Henry Cordless, as it has bags. LG L9 has a removable cyclone assembly for easy cleaning; the Henry you should have minimal maintenance because it has bags. Unless you want to wash filters after every use, stay away from the 'budget' models. Personally I have a Dyson V7 (V8), and a V15. I would strongly suggest the V8 over the V15. Less/easier maintenance, and the V7 has never gotten stinky unlike the much newer V15. Performance wise I can't tell a difference, when in max mode. (the auto detect mode on V15 is admittedly nice) Battery life: Just don't expect you can use any cordless to really clean, quick pickups are where they shine. Performance wise, to come anywhere near close to a good corded unit you need to run it on 'max' mode, which generally equates to \~10min worth of use.

We've had the Dyson V7 since ~2019. The battery gave out so I just picked up one of those Milwaukee battery converters. I can push it pretty far on Max suction on a 4 Ah battery

I have a lower end Miele as my main vacuum and have had it for 10 years and it is like new... however I did supplement with a Dyson cordless for awhile and it went through a battery every year and I had to replace several broken plastic bits on the cannister.... also those make a mess when you try to empty them..... No cordless vacuums are BIFL.... HOWEVER we did get a Samsung Bespoke Jet cordless vac 2 years ago and I love that thing. Pricy for a cordless but it is way better quality than the Dyson and has a charging base that also contains a vacuum/bag that sucks the dirt out of it into a bag... so completely mess-less. It also has two batteries that can be swapped in seconds like a power tool. The second battery mounts to the dock in a second charger. It is also quieter than the Dyson and the Miele.

I found myself purchasing a new vacuum about every 2 years. Then I purchased a Dyson pet , and it was great. Had a 5-year warranty, and promptly lost suction at the 6-year mark. It was the best vacuum for the almost 6 years I had it. Now I have a Shark, an apartment vacuum because it is mostly for bare floors, but the cord is short. Have had it for 2 years now. I would take advice of the professional cleaner - the porta-vac.

You want a bagged vacuum. I've had a Dyson, a Bissell, a Dyson knock off, the LG A9, the Miele Duoflex - all bagless and all very loud. My cats will scatter if I turn them on. My bagged Miele on the other hand... they don't even bother getting up from their naps.

I just asked about how often I’d be buying bags for a sebo with two high shedding large dogs, (similar probably too a gsd and 3 (if long hair cats) I would probably be replacing the bag every week. (Actually more than that because I didn’t tell people I also have 3 cats haha) Someone with a husky commented that they replace the bag 1.5-2 times a month. Calculating that cost for two dogs is another 210 a year in bags (probably more for me) I am taking that into account with  replacing a vacuum that died (Dyson) but it doesn’t have a bag or a Sebo that has a 10 year warranty but I will have probably bought 2-3 dysons in that time period with the amount I’d be spending on bags. I haven’t decided yet 🙃 but thought I’d share the numbers.

For the price, it makes sense to what's usually recommended here. The other I was looking at is 4 times the cost and heavier!  I haven't decided yet, but my trusty old Dyson animal finally died and the repair failed, I really hope OP is steering me in the right direction.  My poor Dyson. New ones are awful compared, the only thing I like about my cordless $500 Dyson is that it doesn't get stuck on rugs. I need the cord back!!!!

I spent about two years dithering and then a month researching and got a Miele C3 to replace my falling-apart and LOUD Dyson Animal. It was a good choice. Quiet and no dust. I did remove all the carpeting in my house, but still need to vacuum up the cat tumbleweed under the bed and sofa, as well as the “welcome” mats inside the house where I leave my outdoor shoes.

I got Dyson and I love it. she does hard and soft floors, she’s light enough for cob webs, car cleaning, you can lower the suck so if you spill crumbs at night it’s quiet. you can get unbranded acsessories so I got alsorts of things to help clean cars, keyboards, I got clips for the tube to hold more nozzles, I got a big bendy tube so stairs is a breeze. the filters are washable, I got a load of unbranded so I can swap them out more often. any breakages you can buy most spare parts online which is super handy also you just twist the end and the rollerbar pops out which makes long hair cleaning so easy. I used to hate sitting on the floor with sicciors cutting hair off the bar. I don’t miss trailing cables or the bulk of the Hoover.

In another life I was a Kirby service tech and I serviced machines on a number of occasions > 40-50 years old. At the time they had parts available for all machines. They ARE expensive (and the sales process leaves a lot to be desired) but are generally built like tanks. If there's a weak point, it's the fan. Even if it is Lexan, hard/heavy enough debris (eg bolts) can shatter the blades. The nice thing about the design is that instead of putting the bag inline with the fan, the bags fill from the top so it's able to maintain airflow. We have one (though it was a gift) but generally use our Dyson cordless day to day.

I made the switch from a bagless upright Dyson and a stick Dyson to a Kenmore Pop N Go canister, based on the advice of this sub. I could not be happier. I have three shed monster Australian Shepherds that have killed several Dysons over the years. I am THRILLED not to have to stop and empty the Dyson every 5 minutes. Changing the bag on the Kenmore is a lot less messy than emptying the bin on the Dyson. I wish I bought a canister 20 years ago. The canister is much easier to use on the stairs. It works miracles on cleaning my blinds, which the Dyson was absolutely useless for. It actually gets my carpets clean, which the Dyson failed to do after about a year. Also, the Kenmore is a hell of a lot quieter than my Dyson.

I love my Dyson. Works well, I’ve had it for 4 years and have done zero maintenance to it. Sleek and easy to use. Mine is cordless and I find I use it more often because it’s easy to just whip out and then put it away. Is it the most powerful vacuum? Probably not, but I don’t need that. I have a cleaning service that comes by biweekly. I’m more about convenience and spot cleaning when needed. They have sales often so definitely keep checking for one so you don’t have to pay full price.
